Huawei is Planning to Leap Ahead in the Connectivity Race with 5.5G Networks

While the world is still warming up to 5G technology, Huawei Technologies is already setting sights on the next leap with the introduction of 5.5G networks. Announced in a grand ceremony in Dubai, Huawei partnered with several telecom giants, including China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, as well as du from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Telecommunication Company.

China had almost 2.8 million 5G base stations as of May

So, what’s the fuss about 5.5G? Huawei claims that the new technology offers ten times the speed of current networks, lower latency, and efficient power usage. Imagine playing a VR game or using your smart car without any noticeable lag, and you begin to see why this is a big deal. Not just for individual consumers, these upgrades are expected to be revolutionary for various industries.

Huawei

“The phase of accelerated commercialization for 5.5G is already underway globally,” said Cao Ming, Huawei’s president of wireless solutions. Almost 20 countries are reported to have the spectrum in place for 5.5G, making it evident that this isn’t just a futuristic vision but a technology that’s preparing for mainstream adoption. Cao Ming emphasized the technology’s role in boosting productivity across traditional sectors, signaling a broader digital transformation.

China has been a frontrunner in the 5G race, boasting more than 2.8 million 5G base stations as of May. A significant 52% of China Mobile’s upcoming 5G base station work will rely on Huawei equipment. The introduction of 5.5G technology, also dubbed as “5G-Advanced,” is seen as a stepping stone to the next big thing—6G, which might just be around the corner in the next decade.

The 5.5G network is more than just an incremental upgrade; it represents a paradigm shift in how we think about connectivity and its applications across industries. With its launch, Huawei seems poised to steer the digital future.

Chinese Smartphone Brands Face Regulatory Issues Amid India-China Tensions

While Chinese smartphone brands like Vivo have made inroads in India’s booming mobile market, the companies are facing a rocky terrain due to heightened geopolitical tensions between the two nations.

Last December, Indian customs officials detained almost $15 million worth of Vivo’s smartphones

Vivo recently voiced its commitment to support four of its executives who were arrested in India. This comes on the heels of a series of actions taken by Indian authorities against Chinese tech firms, including Vivo, Xiaomi, and Huawei, mostly on charges of financial irregularities such as money laundering. Vivo was already in hot water last December when Indian customs officials detained nearly $15 million worth of its smartphones at a New Delhi airport, affecting its export plans.

Vivo logo

Notably, Vivo is a significant player in India, holding a 17% market share, which puts it right behind Samsung and ahead of Xiaomi, according to Counterpoint Research. However, their operations are taking a hit due to India’s tightened regulatory environment, shaped in part by ongoing political frictions. After the fatal Himalayan border clashes between India and China in June 2020, India has amped up scrutiny of Chinese tech companies and even banned several apps citing national security concerns.

The Indian government isn’t just stopping at arrests and bans. Earlier this year, they proposed new regulations requiring smartphone makers to allow users to uninstall pre-installed apps and mandating governmental screening for major operating system updates. These developments add another layer of complexity for companies like Vivo operating in India.

Xiaomi is also grappling with its legal issues; the firm is fighting to regain access to $676 million seized last April over allegations of foreign exchange violations.

While Vivo pledges to “exercise all available legal options,” the company and its Chinese peers are undeniably in a challenging situation. They must navigate not just the local market dynamics but also a regulatory minefield that shows no sign of easing up. And as these tensions persist, the stakes are high not just for the companies but also for the Indian consumers who have increasingly relied on Chinese smartphones.

For now, these tech giants have to find a way to operate under the lens of stricter regulatory scrutiny while also maintaining their hard-won market positions in India.

Tesla Model Y and Model 3 Get Off-Road Ready with New Chinese Pu.Labo Lift Kits

Fans seeking an off-road adventure with their Tesla vehicles have been looking for new options. Until recently, Germany’s Delta4x4 had cornered the market with its Tesla Model Y lift kit. However, a new contender from China, Pu.Labo, is challenging that kit, promising even more height and features for the Tesla EV.

This kit offers yet another option for Tesla owners to upgrade their cars

Delta4x4’s offering is pretty straightforward. Priced around $1,000, it provides a lift of up to three inches thanks to a 1.3-inch spacer kit and bigger tires. It’s a modest upgrade aimed at those who want a bit more room to navigate rough terrains.

On the other hand, Pu.Labo is going all out. Made in Shanghai, their $15,000 lift kit (with a promotional price of $12,000) not only lifts the Tesla Model Y or Model 3 by up to five inches, but it also includes redesigned control arms and adjustable coil-over shocks. Plus, it maximizes wheel travel to eight inches. The kit has been tested under various harsh conditions, including mud and sand, confirming its off-road capability.

Tesla

Now, the price difference is noticeable. Delta4x4’s kit is accessible, but Pu.Labo’s cost is in the same ballpark as a used car. Yet, Pu.Labo argues that you get what you pay for, offering a comprehensive set of features that make your Tesla a more robust off-roading machine.

So, what does this competition mean for Tesla owners? Simply put, options. Those who just want a bit of an upgrade can stick with Delta4x4. For the off-road enthusiasts who want to push their Teslas to the limit, Pu.Labo’s kit may well be the right investment.

As Tesla vehicles continue to dominate the electric car market, third-party innovations like these signify that the EV revolution isn’t just about getting from point A to B — it’s also about how much fun you can have along the way.

What are your thoughts? Is Pu.Labo’s steeper price justified for the features it offers? Let us know in the comments below.

Nokia C31 now ships with Freeme OS in China

HMD Global unveiled the Nokia C31 at IFA 2022 which took place in the first week of September. This device is an entry-level smartphone and is limited to 4G connectivity.

It was released in China a month later in October. Now, a year after the handset’s debut in the country, an interesting detail has emerged.

As per the available information, the phone now ships with a different software than it launched with.

Nokia C31

Nokia-branded smartphones from HMD Global boot near-to-stock Android software worldwide, except in China. Because Google is banned in this country, and therefore, the software on phones has evolved differently compared to other markets.

For the unaware, Nokia smartphones in China have tweaked UI elements and personalized services. They do not look like the software that you find on the same handsets elsewhere.

Despite being different, the software on Nokia phones in China is light. But this is not the case anymore, at least on the Nokia C31.

As per @Hikari_Calyx on X (formerly Twitter), the newer units of the Nokia C31 now ship with Freeme OS in China. This software is developed by Shanghai Zhuoyi Technology Co., Ltd, which also goes by Droi.

Feeme OS is a heavy skin on Android like popular Chinese skins, such as MIUI. It nowhere resembles the stock Android, which is one of the key selling points of Nokia handsets.

The Nokia C31 is eligible for 2 years of quarterly security updates. However, the units with Freeme OS are stuck with the October 2022 security patch.

It seems that this particular version of the device may not receive any system update at all. As HMD Global did not promise any Android update for the phone, it will remain on Android 12 forever.

The Nokia C31 is powered by an entry-level Unisoc SC9863A1 chip and costs ¥799 (~$110) in China. At this price, consumers get better options from local brands.

Huawei P70 to feature in-display optical fingerprint sensor, according to supply chain sources

Huawei is making a comeback in the smartphone market with its Mate 60 series, despite previous setbacks caused by U.S. actions. This resurgence is largely attributed to the use of their domestically developed Kirin 9000S chipset with 5G capabilities, showcasing Huawei’s efforts to reduce reliance on U.S. chip suppliers. However, Huawei’s growth prospects could face challenges due to potential U.S. policy changes, such as stricter export controls on essential chipmaking equipment and AI chips.

Huawei Mate 60

Huawei Mate60 component prices saw an increase of 15-30%

Despite facing hurdles, Huawei’s Mate 60 series is experiencing strong sales, further establishing its presence in the smartphone market. However, the surge in demand has led to higher prices for crucial components, particularly the under-screen optical fingerprint modules essential for Mate 60 devices. These component prices have seen an increase of 15-30%. Key providers of these chips for the Mate 60 lineup are Goodix, GigaDevice (Siliwei), and Weier Technology (Jihao Technology).

The Huawei P70, set to be released in 2024, is expected to retain the under-screen optical fingerprint technology used in the Mate 60 series, as per supply chain sources. Additionally, it may feature the Kirin 9000S chipset, which has been previously reported.

Huawei aims to double its smartphone exports in 2024, targeting 60 to 70 million units. To meet the demand, the company is prioritizing the acquisition of optical fingerprint modules, which have seen price increases due to high demand. Huawei appears to be actively building inventory in preparation for a smooth launch and distribution of the P70 flagship.

Huawei has faced challenges in the past month due to consistently high-volume orders from partners, which have strained the availability of crucial components and disrupted production rates. However, Huawei remains committed to its ambitious goal of shipping 60-70 million smartphones in the upcoming year, with the P70 expected to play a central role in the company’s strategy. Additionally, they will also cut ties with Qualcomm and exclusively use its in-house Kirin processors for new models starting in 2024.

The Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro bear model numbers 23127PN0CC and 23116PN5BC, respectively. They were recently certified by 3C and TENAA.

Both of them will arrive with Leica-tuned cameras with three different focal lengths. Just like the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Xiaomi 14 Pro is also rumored to sport a titanium frame and satellite connectivity.

The Mercedes eActros 600 is a great sustainability solution for haulage business. Its 500km range will adequately cover most of the long-distance trips by Mercedes customers. The semi just requires charging infrastructure at the two end-points of its journey, which is great. Furthermore, Mercedes says the eActros can also travel significantly more than 1,000km in a day because the truck can easily be recharged during breaks. The eActros can haul carriages of up to 22 tons

The eActros 600 is the EV version of its ICE model. It delivers durability like its ICE sibling and can reach a total mileage of up to 1.2 million km. Mercedes also says that the battery state of health remains up to 80% after 10 years of usage. The charging capacity of the eActros is 400kW. The electric semi has an 800V electric axle with two electric motors and a peak output of 805hp. Mercedes will offer megawatt charging later for the truck but it comes with 400kW charging capacity.

The Mercedes eActros 600 will be up to 2.5 times more expensive than its diesel sibling but offers more profitability in the long term. The new model could square off decently against the Tesla Semi and the finer optics will emerge after the release of both models.

Recall that a number of companies like JAC had earlier unveiled electric trucks to take on the Tesla Semi but it remains to be seen if a formidable competition to the Semi will emerge anytime soon.
