Apple Takes A Step Back to Comply with Chinese App Store Regulations

Apple has updated its app guidelines in China, conforming to new regulations that demand all apps to be licensed for local users. This move shows Apple’s willingness to adapt to China’s tightening internet restrictions. But how will these changes affect the typical iPhone user in China?

Apple accounted for 1/4th of all Chinese Smartphone Shipments

Previously, Apple’s App Store was a gateway for Chinese users to download and use banned foreign apps, such as Instagram and YouTube, by employing virtual private networks (VPNs). However, the new policy aims to plug this loophole in China’s ‘Great Firewall,’ essentially restricting ordinary citizens from accessing various global platforms.

Apple

What makes this situation more intriguing is Apple’s absence from a recent list of registered “app distribution platforms” published by China’s Cyberspace Administration (CAC). Considering Apple accounted for a fourth of all smartphone shipments in China for the first half of 2023, this omission could signal challenges for the tech giant in maintaining its presence in the country.

Now, let’s break down what this means for Apple and its users. Analysts suggest that despite these hurdles, Apple’s strong brand may help it weather the storm. The company has a diversified product range and its latest iPhone 15 has already proven popular in China. This indicates that while the App Store might face challenges, Apple’s hardware sales could remain strong.

TikTok’s New Hires Raise Eyebrows in Washington Over User Data Security

Two prominent U.S. senators are taking a closer look at TikTok, a social media app known for short videos, after the platform hired high-ranking executives from its parent company, ByteDance, based in China. Senators Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat, and Marsha Blackburn, a Republican, expressed concerns about the app’s U.S. operations and the security of its American users’ data.

TikTok has yet to respond to any queries regarding the matter

The bipartisan duo reached out to the company CEO Shou Zi Chew this Tuesday, questioning the app’s so-called independence from ByteDance. Their inquiry puts the spotlight on whether TikTok is truly autonomous or is more deeply entwined with its parent company than previously assumed.

The senators are concerned that these new hires could possibly signal ByteDance’s continuing influence over the app. This is crucial as TikTok is used by over 150 million Americans and has already faced calls for a nationwide ban from U.S. lawmakers due to potential risks linked to the Chinese government.

TikTok has yet to respond to these queries, but the move adds another layer to the ongoing debates about TikTok’s place in America. The senators have requested a detailed account of what security measures are in place for employees who transfer from ByteDance in China to TikTok in the U.S.

The fresh scrutiny comes as TikTok aims to solidify its place in American digital life. While the platform has proven popular among U.S. users, doubts over data security persist. The senators’ recent actions bring these concerns front and center, signaling that TikTok has more hoops to jump through before it can put regulatory worries to rest.

Nvidia H100 GPU price surges in Japan, putting generative AI devs in a bind

Though many of us recognize Nvidia for its RTX series graphics cards, the company is much more than that. Especially in the field of artificial intelligence, this tech giant can be described as the unsung hero of our current AI era. Numerous AI services, including ChatGPT, utilize Nvidia’s chips, and this fact is drawing increasing attention from users every day.

Recently, some of the company’s chips even went on sale in Japan. However, the prices of Nvidia’s generative AI chips are soaring in Japan, driven by the weak yen and strong demand for the chips. Here are the details…

Nvidia H100 generative AI chip prices skyrocket in Japan

If you’re working on artificial intelligence technology, Nvidia’s H100 GPU is just what you need. This chip is the most powerful GPU available in the market, and it’s highly sought after by companies creating new generative AI products and services. In September 2023, Nvidia’s official sales partner in Japan, GDEP Advance, increased the catalog price of the H100 GPU by 16%. As a result, the H100 GPU is now priced at approximately 5.44 million yen ($36,300) in Japan.

The weak yen is also contributing to the rising cost of Nvidia’s GPUs in Japan. The yen has lost about 20% of its value against the US dollar in the past year. This means that Japanese companies have to pay more yen to buy the same amount of US dollars, which they need to buy Nvidia’s GPUs from the US.

The rising cost of Nvidia’s GPUs is a concern for Japanese companies that are developing generative AI products and services. These companies are already facing high costs for other components, such as data storage and computing power. The rising cost of GPUs is adding to these costs, and it could make it more difficult for Japanese companies to compete in the global generative AI market.

Despite the rising costs, some Japanese companies are still willing to pay more for Nvidia’s GPUs. This is because the H100 GPU is the most powerful GPU on the market, and it is essential for developing the most advanced generative AI applications. It is unclear how long the rising prices of Nvidia’s GPUs will continue in Japan.

CEO Satya Nadella: Microsoft Spent $100 Billion to Prevent Google Monopoly

Competition is one of the best things that has happened for us consumers. Where there’s competition, companies fiercely compete to offer better products or services at a lower cost, and the consumer emerges as the winner. Of course, there are companies that go against this and try to monopolize their market. It seems that Google is one of them.

The Department of Justice’s antitrust trial against Google started on September 12, 2023. The DOJ claims that Google has breached antitrust laws by misusing its stronghold in the search engine sector. Recently, Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella testified against Google in this trial. During his statement, Nadella mentioned that Microsoft invested $100 billion into Bing to challenge Google’s dominance. Here are the details…

Microsoft Says it Spent $100 Billion in Bing to Challenge Google’s Dominance

Google is the world’s most popular search engine. In fact, it’s so integrated into our lives that, for example, when we get a new computer, one of the first things we do is install Google Chrome and set Google as the default browser instead of Bing. However, according to the Department of Justice, the company is trying to establish a monopoly by abusing its dominant position in the market, even in such situations. Recently, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was at this trial.

During his testimony, Nadella mentioned that Microsoft has invested $100 billion in Bing in an attempt to compete with Google and prevent the company from monopolizing the search market. Nadella argued that Google’s dominance in search is harmful to consumers and businesses.

He also said that Google uses its market power to stifle competition and innovation. For example, Nadella cited Google’s practice of paying wireless carriers and smartphone makers to keep Google as the default search engine on their devices. This practice makes it difficult for other search engines, such as Bing, to compete.

adella also argued that Google’s search results are biased in favor of its own products and services. He said that this bias gives Google an unfair advantage over its competitors. Nadella’s testimony is significant because it provides a rare glimpse into Microsoft’s strategy for competing with Google in the search market. It is also notable that Nadella is willing to publicly criticize Google, even though the two companies are major rivals.

It is still too early to say what impact Nadella’s testimony will have on the DOJ’s antitrust case against Google. However, his testimony could help to strengthen the DOJ’s case and increase the chances of Google being found guilty of violating antitrust laws. It is also worth noting that Nadella’s testimony comes at a time when Microsoft is reportedly considering making a major investment in Apple’s search engine. This investment would be seen as a major escalation in Microsoft’s efforts to compete with Google.

Samsung Aims to Bring Modern AAA Games to Your Galaxy Phone with the Cheapest Cloud Gaming Service in the World

Samsung continues to expand its range of products and services. By doing so, the company appeals to a broad user base and ensures its resilience even if things go awry in a particular sector. For instance, the South Korean tech giant recently introduced its new 49-inch G93SC curved OLED 240Hz monitor. However, that’s not the end of the company’s future plans. Reports suggest that Samsung will be launching its game streaming service out of beta this week. Here are the details…

Samsung to Launch Cloud Gaming Service for Galaxy Phones This Week

If you want to play modern AAA games, the solution is pretty straightforward. Simply prepare your budget and purchase a console or PC, and you’ll be able to play your desired game at high settings and enjoy your hobby. However, this can be quite expensive, and it might be hard for you to afford it. So, what’s the alternative? The answer is cloud gaming.

samsung Cloud gaming

Cloud gaming, or game streaming, allows users to play video games hosted on remote servers, streaming them directly to devices like TVs, phones, or computers. This means you don’t have to download or install games on your device, and you can play them even if your device isn’t equipped to run them on its own.

Although it’s still in its early stages, this method is gradually gaining popularity. Services like Nvidia’s GeForce Now, Amazon Luna and Microsoft’s XCloud are increasingly being used by users on a tight budget. For instance, during the pandemic, even though I didn’t have any gaming equipment, I had the opportunity to play high-quality graphic games like Witcher 3 on my 2010-era laptop using GeForce Now.

Now, Samsung is reportedly planning to officially introduce cloud gaming within the Samsung Game Launcher on Galaxy phones at its developer conference on October 5th. Although the performance of smartphones improves with almost every new model, mobile games today still often require relatively “simple” and low graphics. Yet, players want to see games of a quality close to PC/console games on their $1000 devices.

Due to the current business model and revenue strategies, it’s not practical to develop modern games solely for a few top-tier devices. This is where Samsung’s cloud gaming service steps in. The company is trying to bridge the gap by offering a way to play these modern games, making their product more appealing. Samsung has been experimenting with cloud gaming on its Galaxy phones for a while.

They are also reportedly in discussions with major game publishers to introduce their games to the platform. Moreover, Samsung has stated that they will charge a smaller service fee than other cloud gaming providers, potentially making it more enticing for game developers.

Unfortunately, we don’t have much information about the upcoming service beyond what we’ve just mentioned. However, a word of caution for all Galaxy phone users: entering the cloud gaming market will not be easy for Samsung. For instance, the most recent company that ventured into this field with high enthusiasm was Google. They announced a service named Stadia in 2019 and launched it in 2020. Regrettably, due to continuous losses, they shut down Stadia in 2022. Sadly, a similar fate might await Samsung.

TikTok is testing an ad-free $4.99 monthly subscription service in the US

TikTok has started testing a $4.99 monthly subscription plan for users in the US. The subscription service is unique in that it is ad-free. Some new code within the app shows that TikTok is already testing the new service.

Currently, the new TikTok subscription service is pegged at $4.99 per month. This could change in other markets when the service extends beyond the US. There are no details yet on the full product launch of the TikTok subscription service.
TikTok has continued to revolutionize how apps share videos with the short-format videos it entered the market with. In the wake of the TikTok success, many apps like Facebook and YouTube have incorporated short format videos into their ecosystem. The app also provides a bouquet of video editing tools for content creators. Ad-free subscription services are quite common in the industry and TikTok is entering the fray.

Apart from the string of code seen from the app, there had been no official TikTok announcement on the matter. The US testing of the TikTok subscription service could expand to a full service for multiple markets. Also, since it is in the testing phase, final pricing may differ from the current price and may also be market-determined.

TikTok has seen massive growth in ad revenue over the years. It has several revenue-sharing mechanisms for creators, as well as a direct Live Subscription feature. The ad-free user experience can be very exciting but TikTok has to balance the optics to remain competitive in its niche area of short format videos.

Nvidia’s Reign Challenged: Samsung and Tenstorrent’s Game-Changing Partnership

Samsung is one of the world’s leading chip manufacturers, and its 4nm process is one of the most advanced in the industry. Now, the company has announced that it will manufacture chips for AI chip startup Tenstorrent. This is a significant development for Tenstorrent, as it gives the company access to Samsung’s advanced manufacturing capabilities. Here are the details….

Samsung and Tenstorrent Join Forces to Revolutionize AI Chip Market

Tenstorrent is a Canadian startup that designs AI chips. The company’s chips are designed to be highly efficient for training and inference tasks. Tenstorrent is targeting a number of markets with its chips, including data centers, automotive, and healthcare.

Cisco AI chip

The chips that Samsung will manufacture for Tenstorrent are called Quasar chips. Quasar chips are chiplets, which means that they are designed to be combined with other chiplets to create a larger chip. This approach allows Tenstorrent to customize its chips for specific applications.

Samsung’s investment in Tenstorrent and its decision to manufacture Quasar chips is a sign that Samsung is taking the AI chip market seriously. Samsung is also looking to expand its foundry business, and this deal with Tenstorrent could help Samsung to achieve that goal.

The deal between Samsung and the company is also significant because it could help to challenge the dominance of Nvidia in the AI chip market. Nvidia is currently the leading provider of AI chips, but Tenstorrent’s Quasar chips could offer a more efficient and cost-effective alternative.

It is still early days for the partnership between Samsung and Tenstorrent, but it has the potential to be a major force in the AI chip market. By combining Samsung’s manufacturing capabilities with Tenstorrent’s chip design expertise, the two companies could create a new generation of AI chips that are more powerful and efficient than anything that is currently available.
