Ryzen comes to Framework 13-inch laptops with AMD Mainboards

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace. As a result, we’re constantly introduced to new products like computers, phones, and headphones. Moreover, many of us buy these even when we don’t need them. For example, even though I use a MacBook with an M1 chip, I want to buy the M2 MacBook Air, despite not really needing it.

Unfortunately, such purchases can contribute to electronic waste if our existing devices aren’t resold or recycled. Framework, however, is aiming to address this problem by developing modular products, allowing you to enhance the performance of your existing computer. In line with this, the company recently introduced AMD mainboards for their 13-inch laptops.

If you already have a Framework 13 laptop, you can finally upgrade to an AMD mainboard. However, it’s important to note that you will need to purchase new RAM and a new WiFi module. The Framework’s new AMD mainboards come in three configurations:

Base: Ryzen 5 7640U with Radeon 760M iGPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD
Performance: Ryzen 7 7840U with Radeon 7840U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
Ultra: Ryzen 7 7840U with Radeon 7840U, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD

The only difference between the base and performance models is the CPU and RAM. The ultra model has the same CPU and RAM as the performance model, but it also has a larger SSD. The AMD mainboards offer a number of advantages over the Intel mainboards. First, they offer better performance, especially in multi-thread. Second, they have better integrated graphics, which means that you can play some games without having to rely on a dedicated GPU.

However, there are also a few disadvantages to the AMD mainboards. First, they are more expensive than the Intel mainboards. Second, the front two USB-C ports do not support Thunderbolt 4. Therefore, if you’re a user of a 13-inch Framework laptop and are considering switching to AMD, you need to think carefully and decide which option is right for you.

Price & Availability

The Framework 13 laptop with an AMD mainboard is available to order now on the Framework website. The base model starts at $1,049, the performance model starts at $1,469, and the ultra model starts at $1,669. The first seven production batches of the Framework 13 laptop with an AMD mainboard are already sold out, but Framework says that it is working to produce more units. The company expects to ship the first orders in late October. Unfortunately, judging by the price, we can say that protecting the environment and using a modular laptop is not cheap at all for 2023.

Samsung Rumored to End Partnership with AMD for Mobile GPUs

Samsung has been working with AMD to develop mobile GPUs for its Exynos processors for the past three years. The first fruit of this partnership was the Exynos 2200, featuring the Samsung Xclipse GPU. It was powered by AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture and was used on the Galaxy S22 series.

In April 2023, Samsung and AMD announced that they would continue working together to bring high-quality graphics to more smartphones. However, a new rumor suggests that Samsung may be on the verge of ending its partnership with AMD.

According to the rumor, Samsun’s System LSI team is considering developing its own in-house mobile GPUs rather than continuing to rely on AMD. This would allow Samsung to have full control over the design of its graphics processors, which are critical components for mobile gaming and other graphics-intensive applications.

If the leak is true, it means that future Exynos processors could feature a Samsung GPU instead of an AMD architecture. This could have a significant impact on the mobile GPU market, as AMD has been gaining market share in recent years.

Samsung is expected to release its next-generation Exynos 2400 processor in 2024. According to leaks, the Exynos 2400 will still use an improved AMD-based GPU. However, the long-term outlook for the Samsung-AMD partnership remains uncertain.

Samsung may end partnership with AMD for mobile GPUs

Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro Has Worse Battery Life than the Pixel 6, per Google

Despite the outstanding photo quality of the Google Pixel 7 series of smartphones, Google’s flagships have long suffered from complaints of poorer battery life and cellular stability than their competitors like Apple, Xiaomi and OnePlus. And the main culprit has always been assumed to be Google’s power-intensive Tensor chipsets manufactured on Samsung’s foundry.

With the recent release of the Google Pixel 8 series this week, Google fans were curious by whether the new Tensor G3 chipset would bring better battery life to the Pixel lineup. However, based on the small fine print on Google’s “Compare Phones” section on its website, it is revealed that the Google Pixel 8 series not only has the same bad battery life as the Pixel 7 series but is also worse than the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro that were released 2 years ago.

As shown in the official fine print above, the latest Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s battery lasted an average of 31 hours from Google’s own internal testing, which makes both devices on par with the Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro from last year. In addition, when compared to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launched 2 years back, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s battery life is worse because they only last 3 hours shorter than Google’s own Pixel 6 at 34 hours. We compiled a table below to view Google’s claims of average battery life in its Pixel lineup in descending order, alongside the battery capacity of each Pixel smartphone.

For context, external testers like TechDroider on YouTube, have tested the battery life of last year’s Google Pixel 7 Pro against the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, OnePlus 11, Xiaomi 13 Ultra, and Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max. Their results on battery life are as shown in Table 2.

As shown, the Pixel 7 Pro is significantly lagging behind its competitors in the battery life department of the premium smartphone market by around 2 hours in battery life. And the battery life result of 8 hours and 13 mins is much shorter than Google’s official claim of 31 hours on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.

If Google’s claims of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro’s battery are true, then the Pixel 8 series has the same bad battery life of “31 hours” as the Pixel 7 and possibly worse battery life than the Pixel 6 series as well.

Realme UI 5.0 Features

Specifications

Samsung Galaxy Watch Gets New “Sleep Apnea” Feature

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch is already a popular device for tracking health and fitness, and the company is now adding another useful feature to it: sleep apnea detection. This feature will be available in Korea via the Samsung Health Monitor app starting early next year.

For those unaware, sleep apnea is a common yet serious medical condition that causes people to stop breathing while they sleep. It can lead to a number of health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. However, many people with sleep apnea might be unaware of their condition.

Samsung’s new sleep apnea feature will help people identify their symptoms early on. To use the feature, users will need to track their sleep twice within 10 days, each time for more than four hours. The watch will then provide them with an estimate of their Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), which is a measure of the severity of sleep apnea.

If a user has a high AHI score, the watch will recommend that they see a doctor for further evaluation and treatment. Samsung’s new sleep apnea feature is a valuable addition to the Galaxy Watch series and could help millions of people identify and manage their condition.

The new sleep apnea feature joins blood pressure monitoring, electrocardiogram (ECG) detection, and irregular heart rhythm notification as the latest additions to the Samsung Health Monitor app.

That said, Samsung notes that the new sleep apnea feature is only a pre-diagnosis tool and cannot replace diagnosis or treatment by a qualified healthcare professional. However, it can certainly be a useful tool for people who are concerned about their sleep health.

Apple has now released the iOS 17.0.3 patch. As per official notes, it “addresses an issue that may cause iPhone to run warmer than expected.” This update is targeted for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models.

Apart from just addressing the heating problem, Apple also fixed a bug that surfaced last month with the new update. In a statement to MacRumors, Apple has clarified that it was third-party apps that led to the smartphone heating up and the titanium build isn’t a factor. The highly anticipated Google Pixel 8 series was finally announced after months of leaks and rumors. Now, a new teardown video for the Pixel 8 model has surfaced mere hours after its launch. The video offers us a close look at the new flagship device’s internal, so let’s have a look.

The teardown for the Search Engine giant’s Pixel 8 was shared by PBKreviews on YouTube. In the video, the smartphone is disassembled in front of the camera. This also offers a tutorial on how to open up the device. We can see the rear camera sensors once the rear panel is removed, along with the graphite film that helps in dissipating heat. Right underneath this layer is the battery pack, which was a bit tricky to remove due to the adhesives.

Although, the Pixel 8’s camera models were relatively easier to remove. PBKreviews even managed to take out the motherboard of the new smartphone. The YouTuber noted that removing the back panel without damaging the device is difficult. He gave the Pixel 8 a repairability score of 7 out of 10. This score isn’t bad since it means that self repairs are possible, however, it isn’t recommended for inexperienced beginners.

Talking about the device itself, the Pixel 8 is equipped with Google’s Tensor G3 chipset, which is paired with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. It sports a 6.2-inch OLED display that has a Full HD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The rear features a 50-megapixel dual camera setup, while the front houses a 10.5-megapixel selfie shooter. Google has just launched the Pixel Buds Pro in two new color options. The company’s flagship truly wireless earbuds are now available in Blue and Porcelain color variants, joining the four existing options. So let’s have a look.

In other words, the Pixel Buds Pro can be bought in six colors in total. Apart from the new hues, the two new additions are basically the same as the existing Buds Pros. This means that they still cost the same and offer the same specifications as well.

Notably, we had reported on a leak that hinted at the earbuds arriving in these colors back in September. Earlier, we reported that Samsung has started rolling out One UI 6.0 beta 4 for the Galaxy S23 series. This Android 14-based OS included various UI improvements and fixes. But what really caught our attention was that beta 4 arrived with the October security patch. Now, according to a recent report that has surfaced online, Samsung has started releasing the October security update 2023. Read on to learn more about the update.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 have started receiving the October security patch. The update arrives with the build versions F731USQS1AWI3 and F946USQS1AWI3 for Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5, respectively. It is worth noting that these security updates are majorly focused on security that helps keep the device stable and safe. In terms of the security update, the latest patch fixes over two critical vulnerabilities, a dozen high-risk faults, and 12 SVE (Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures).

Furthermore, the patch is currently available in the US for the carrier-locked versions of these smartphones. However, we expect the company to release the patch globally in the future.
