BMW Set to Unveil New Electric 5-Series Sedan, Will Go on Sale in October

The 2023 BMW Annual Meeting was an exciting event for BMW enthusiasts, as the automobile manufacturer revealed some exciting news about their latest car models. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the brand’s first pure electric 5 Series sedan, the BMW i5, which is set to launch in October.

BMW

This launch is a significant milestone for BMW, as the 5 Series has been a flagship model for the company for over 50 years, with more than 10 million units produced since its launch in 1972. However, the new BMW i5 is not just an updated version of its predecessor but a fully electrified model that will give the brand a “truly unique selling point,” according to Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

During the meeting, Zipse also announced the inclusion of pure electric performance models from BMW M GmbH in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan lineup. This move is part of the brand’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup, and the i5 will be the first of many new models to come.

The i5 sedan will be produced at the Dingolfing plant in southern Bavaria, BMW’s largest manufacturing facility in Europe, with production set to begin in the coming months. Despite no pricing announcement, BMW hinted that it plans to introduce a “low-priced electric car” to its lineup, which will undoubtedly attract more consumers to the brand.

The new 5 Series will feature iDrive 8.5, a curved display similar to that of BMW’s iX electric SUV, and new digital services, making it more dynamic and comfortable than ever. Additionally, BMW confirmed that the i5 sedan will have a high-performance M version and a wagon version, following the success of the electric BMW i450, which became the best-selling BMW M model in 2022.

Apart from the i5, BMW also revealed that the upcoming redesigned X2 will have an all-electric version called the iX2, joining the new iX1, which will be unveiled later this year. The flexible powertrain architecture of the new 5 Series Sedan will allow it to offer pure electric and plug-in hybrid models, as well as a 48V mild hybrid system.

Xiaomi’s Misjudgment of Indian Consumers Leads to Changing of Strategy

Xiaomi, is changing its strategy in India after Samsung overtook it to become the top seller of mobile phones in the world’s second-biggest market. Xiaomi’s focus on selling smartphones priced under Rs. 10,000 has not worked as Indian consumers are willing to pay more for better-looking models with richer features. Meanwhile, Samsung launched products that met those aspirations and offered innovative financing schemes that made them affordable to most. So what will be Xiaomi’s new strategy? Here are the details…

Xiaomi Struggles in India as Samsung Overtakes as Market Leader

According to Counterpoint, Samsung had a 20% market share in the last quarter of 2022 compared to Xiaomi’s 18%. This loosening of Xiaomi’s grip on the market is a lesson for companies that fail to cater to changing consumer preferences in a fast-growing economy with rising disposable incomes.

Xiaomi Smartphones

Xiaomi’s portfolio of budget phones was out of step with the premiumisation trend that is sweeping India, leading to a strategic shift to focus on premium smartphones. In January, it launched the Redmi Note 12 whose top-end variant is priced above Rs. 30,000, and more recently the Xiaomi 13 Pro at Rs. 79,999 – its highest-priced phone in India. The shift has already paid dividends, with the Redmi Note 12 clocking sales of $61 million within two weeks of its launch.

Samsung’s success in India has been aided by a scheme run with its financing partners that offers “convenient and assured” loans, helping generate $1 billion in device sales last year. The growth in premium segment phones was much higher in small towns than in big cities, and almost half the consumers who opted for its financing scheme were first-time loan seekers.

Xiaomi has also tapped partnerships to offer loans, calling them a key growth driver for sales of phones priced above Rs. 15,000. The company will also open more stores beyond its current network of 20,000 retail partners and boost local procurement of mobile phone parts, likely reducing costs.

Some industry analysts believe the new strategy could help the Chinese company return to solid growth in India. Xiaomi has historically enjoyed a strong brand equity, a robust online and offline channel presence, and can make a comeback with a potentially strong premium and value-for-money product mix. The lesson for companies like Xiaomi is that they need to be responsive to changing consumer tastes and preferences to succeed in fast-growing markets like India.

LinkedIn Integrates OpenAI to Enhance Its Users’ Profiles

LinkedIn, the popular career-oriented social media platform is taking a new approach to help its users with AI-powered “writing suggestions” and job descriptions. The company is aiming to make it easier for users to complete the “about” and “headline” sections of their profiles, which can often be challenging to fill out. LinkedIn is using OpenAI models to power the “enhance” tool, which LinkedIn Premium subscribers can use to generate descriptions based on their experience.

LinkedIn

The tool aims to preserve the user’s “unique voice and style” by drawing on their job experience and skills, as well as LinkedIn’s own insights into what makes a good profile. The AI-generated descriptions are a great starting point for users, but the company recommends that users review and edit the text for accuracy.

LinkedIn is also testing AI-written job descriptions, where hiring managers only need to fill out the job title, company name, and a few other basic details. LinkedIn will then generate a detailed draft of a relevant job description. These tools are designed to save users time, allowing them to offload some of the more tedious writing tasks associated with LinkedIn.

These writing tools are not LinkedIn’s first foray into generative AI. The company has also introduced “collaborative articles,” which combine AI-written text with contributions from individual LinkedIn experts. In addition, the company is adding new online courses focused on generative AI-related topics.

Overall, LinkedIn’s approach to AI is focused on enhancing the user experience by making it easier to create a compelling profile and job description. The tools are not meant to replace human input but rather to provide a starting point for users to build upon.

Kia’s Stylish New EV9 Electric SUV is Feature-Packed & Resembles Older Range Rovers

Kia’s forthcoming EV9 SUV is causing quite a stir ahead of its official debut next month. The automaker has released images of the interior and exterior, giving us a glimpse of what consumers can expect. However, Kia is keeping some key details under wraps until the unveiling.

The EV9 is a mid-size SUV with three rows of seats, making it one of the first EVs in its category to do so. The exterior design language is characterized by highly pronounced geometric wheel arches and triangular fender structures, resulting in a boxy yet aerodynamic profile. The rear quarter panel windows are reminiscent of the EV6, but the overall design draws inspiration from older Range Rovers.

The interior of the EV9 is a departure from the concept, with Kia opting for two 12.3-inch screens for the gauge cluster and infotainment system. The reduction in physical buttons is a welcome change, with touch-sensitive dash controls added instead. The interior materials, including mesh, contribute to the spaciousness of the cabin. One unique feature of the EV9 is the swivelling captain’s chairs in the middle row, allowing passengers to face the rear seats. The EV9 will be available in 6- and 7-passenger configurations.

Kia EV9

Despite the lack of information about the powertrain and battery size, the EV9 is expected to be a strong competitor in the mid-size SUV category. Kia’s use of the EV6’s E-GMP platform suggests that the EV9 will have impressive performance and range.

Although Kia has not disclosed the price, it is expected to be more expensive than the EV6, which starts at around $45,000. However, Kia has a reputation for producing affordable vehicles in their respective categories, so it’s likely that the EV9 will be competitively priced. Overall, the EV9 is an exciting addition to the EV market, and Kia’s decision to release images of the interior and exterior ahead of the official debut has generated a lot of buzz.

Nothing has recently announced its first software update for its Phone (1) since the Android 13-based 1.5.3 OS.

Nothing Phone 1

The update is small but significant, coming in at 91.79MB and includes a few exciting features. The update includes support for the upcoming Ear (2) wireless buds, set to be launched on March 22 at 10 am ET. The update also boasts a new memory management algorithm that reduces app start times by 35% and lowers CPU strain, which should prolong the Phone (1)’s battery life.

Nothing has also made improvements to the system stability and offered smoother animations for the pop-up view, a better fingerprint transition from the lock screen to the AOD (Always-on display), and new wallpapers. Additionally, the update includes bug fixes, including an issue with the Glyph backlighting, which will now appear when receiving calls from WhatsApp. However, some users have reported issues with notifications not appearing when pulling down the bar. Nothing has big plans for the future, including the release of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Nothing Phone (2) in the U.S.

TikTok is Being Forced Out of ByteDance’s Hands by the US Government

TikTok is a social media app that allows users to create and share short videos set to music or other audio. The app quickly became a global phenomenon, with over 1 billion active users worldwide. TikTok’s algorithm recommends videos to users based on their interests, making it a popular platform for discovering new content and trends. The app has also been the subject of controversy over privacy and security concerns, but it remains a popular platform for users of all ages to express themselves creatively and connect with others around the world. However, the said controversy is heightened in the US, with TikTok facing dire consequences in the near future.

TikTok

The Biden administration is intensifying its efforts to force ByteDance to sell TikTok, just days before the app’s CEO is scheduled to testify in front of Congress. The United States government has reportedly “demanded” that ByteDance sell TikTok, a significant blow to the company, which has spent more than two years negotiating its future in the US with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). CFIUS has told TikTok that it wants ByteDance to sell its stake in the company, or the app could face a national ban.

This move follows the introduction of bills in both the House and Senate that would make it easier for government officials to ban TikTok and other services deemed to be a national security threat. Although TikTok has previously stated that divesting from ByteDance would not address the government’s concerns about data security, Bloomberg has reported that TikTok executives are considering the possibility of separating from ByteDance if the CFIUS talks were to fail. This latest threat of a total ban on TikTok is sure to increase pressure on the company and its CEO, Shou Zi Chew, who is set to appear before Congress for the first time next week.

Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Gaming Console to Reportedly Launch in Late 2024

Sony PlayStation 5, the current gaming console from the company, was released sometime back, and now the device is finally available for purchase without any issues, unlike earlier when it was difficult to get hands on the device.

Now, it appears that the Japanese company is looking to upgrade the gaming console by launching a mid-generation dubbed as Sony PlayStation 5 Pro or PS5 Pro.

Sony PlayStation 5

According to the report from Insider Gaming, Sony will launch a PlayStation 5 with a detachable disc drive later this year as the company plans to cut down the cost of the current-generation gaming console.

Further, the report goes on to add that the company is also planning yet another model in the lineup, a Pro version of the current gaming console, which is expected to get launched in the latter part of 2024. It is also implied that Sony isn’t planning to launch the PlayStation 6 before 2028.

While there have been reports about new models of the PS5 gaming console that the company could launch in the coming months, Sony hasn’t officially confirmed anything. The company is planning to showcase something major at E3 2023, so there’s a possibility that the detachable disc drive version of the PlayStation 5 could get confirmed there.
