Google Pixel Fold Might Have Been Spotted in the Wild

Google has been working on its first ever foldable smartphone from its Pixel series from a while now. But prior to any official announcement, it appears that the Pixel Fold has just been spotted in the wild. So here are all the details.

Google

Just recently, an image had been shared on Reddit. The user who shared this image claimed that the live image of the foldable device is the upcoming Pixel Fold. The Reddit user also added that the foldable smartphone featured a blue color with thin bezels and was being carried by an employee of the Search Engine giant. Out of all the images that were uploaded, only a single one was clear while the rest was blurry.

The supposed Google employee got on board a train in NYC at 14th street which is also where the company’s office is situated. Furthermore, the Redittor added that the camera bump on the back as well as the UI of the device is what made them recognize the Pixel Fold. Interestingly enough, the user added that the person was trying to hide the camera bump. Unfortunately, this was all the discernible information available from this live sighting.

Google

Based on what we know so far, the Pixel Fold will be equipped with the Tensor G2 SoC along with around 12GB of RAM. The device will feature a triple camera setup on the rear, with a 64 megapixel Sony IMX787 sensor, 12 megapixel Sony IMX386 ultra wide angle lens, and a 10 megapixel S5K3J1 telephoto shooter. Meanwhile, the front will house a 9.5 megapixel punch hole selfie camera.

Google One Subscription Now Comes with a VPN for All Plans

A Virtual Private Network, commonly known as VPN, is a powerful tool that allows users to connect to the internet securely and privately. VPN technology uses encryption to scramble data, making it unreadable to anyone who might intercept it. It then routes this encrypted data through a private network of servers located in different parts of the world. This technology provides several advantages to users, including online privacy, improved security, and access to content that may be restricted in their location.

With the increasing number of cyber threats and online privacy concerns, VPNs have become increasingly popular among individuals and organizations alike. Google, one of the biggest tech players in the game previously announced that its Google One Subscription will now come bundled with VPN. This included only the highest tiers of the subscription, until now. As per the latest blog post from the company, the VPN benefit will now extend to all Google One subscription tiers.

Google One VPN

Google One plans already come with increased storage space to ensure your important files and media are safely backed up. To offer even more peace of mind and protection, VPN by Google One is expanding to all plans and will also include access to a dark web report in the U.S., allowing users to better monitor their personal information. The VPN will be available for all Google One subscription tiers, even the $1.99 base plan. This may be a great way to attract those users who were on the cusp of getting into the Google One plan. Users will be able to use Google VPN on Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices.

VPN by Google One is currently available in select countries and regions, including Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States. Eligible Google One members can take advantage of this feature to enhance their online security and privacy.

Apple Puts Spotlight on India with New Sales Management Approach

India is a crucial market in the world due to its large population that surpasses entire continents. Many companies, including like Xiaomi and BBK Group, have established their headquarters (with sub-brands like Realme and Poco) in this Asian country. Apple is also looking to expand its focus on India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market. Here are the details…

Apple Shifts International Sales Strategy to Prioritize India Market

Apple is planning to focus more on India, the second-largest smartphone market in the world. The country will now have its own sales region within the company, giving it more importance. This change is happening because the person in charge of India, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, East Europe, and Africa is retiring, and someone new will be in charge of India alone.

Apple logo like Indian flag

Even though most people in India use Android phones, more and more people are interested in buying Apple products. That’s why the company has started making some iPhone models in India and is investing money to improve production there. Right now, there are no Apple stores in India, but the company is planning to open stores in Mumbai and New Delhi soon. In the meantime, people can buy Apple products online.

India is important to Apple because sales have slowed down in other parts of the world. If Apple can sell more products in India, it can make up for the slower sales in other regions. By focusing more on India, Apple hopes to increase its market share and make more affordable products that people in India can buy. It’s worth noting that Apple’s increased focus on India is not just about sales. The company has also been working with local developers and investing in the Indian app economy.

Custom Apple logo for Indian culture

In 2020, Apple announced the launch of the App Accelerator in Bangalore, which is a center where Indian developers can get help from Apple experts to improve the quality of their apps and make them more successful. This initiative shows that Apple is committed to supporting the growth of the Indian app ecosystem and is willing to invest in the country’s technology talent.

Realme Flip, Realme Fold Officially Teased by Company CEO

Samsung has been ruling the foldable market for a couple of years. However, the South Korean tech giant is soon going to face competition from multiple brands in the foldable segment. OPPO’s Find N2 Flip, which has recently launched in the global market, will take on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series. The Tecno Phantom V Fold and the upcoming OnePlus V Fold (tentative name) is designed to compete with the Galaxy Z Fold series. There is a possibility that Samsung will soon face competition in the Flip as well as Fold categories from Realme.

As can be seen below, Realme CEO Madhav Sheth has asked Realme fans whether they want the Realme Flip or Realme Fold as the next product. This indicates that the company could be planning to release both a vertical and a horizontal foldable device.

In November 2022, Realme China’s Vice President Xu Qi talked about the company’s future plans. He said that the company would launch two GT Neo-branded phones, two number series phones, and one GT series phone each year. He also added that the company is working on an affordable foldable phone.

The Realme Flip and Realme Fold that Sheth mentioned in his tweet do not seem to be the final names. Now that the company’s CEO has teased launching a foldable phone, it appears that it may confirm some more details about it in the future.

In related news, Realme has recently launched the Realme GT 3 240W in the global market. It is a rebranded version of the Realme GT Neo 5 240W, available in China. Besides 240W fast charging, the GT 3 offers a 6.74-inch OLED 1.5K 144Hz display, a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, LPDDR5x RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, 50-megapixel triple cameras, and a 4,600mAh battery.

Android 14 Developer Preview 2 Is Now Available for Pixel Devices

Google has released the Android 14 Developer Preview 2, which is right on schedule according to the company’s outlined plans. While there is still no news about the monthly Pixel update, the developer preview offers several new features, including improved app behaviors, compatibility, privacy, security, and system health.

Android 14 Developer Preview 2 changes

One of the most significant changes in Android 14 DP2 is a major tweak to the Photo Picker, which now requires users to grant access to all images or some images or to deny media permissions entirely. This change offers a significant privacy boost, similar to the experience that iOS users are familiar with.

Google is also continuing to build its new Credential Manager API into Android 14, with support going back to Android 4.4. The latest build includes a refined UI for Google’s account selector, which offers a gateway into a passwordless future.

Another notable change in Android 14 DP2 is improved system performance, with enhancements for memory management and notifications. Google promises fewer non-dismissible notifications and disallows cached apps from running in the background outside of specific lifecycle APIs faster than Android 13. These changes should improve battery life and resource usage.

Android 14 Developer Preview 2 changes

Furthermore, Google is introducing new centralized options for regional preferences, allowing users to set specific temperature units, numbering systems, and the first day of the week, even when traveling outside their home country. This change offers a convenient way for users to tweak their settings throughout the entire OS via multiple APIs, rather than changing individual app settings.

While there are likely to be more changes discovered in the coming days, Android 14 DP2 is now available for installation. However, it is not recommended to run the developer preview on a daily driver, and those with only one smartphone are advised to wait for the beta period next month. Google’s developer website offers factory images and OTA files for those interested in installing the update.

Overall, the Android 14 DP2 offers significant improvements in privacy, security, and system performance, with new features such as a refined UI for Credential Manager API and centralized options for regional preferences. As we wait for the beta period next month, it will be interesting to see what other changes Google has in store for Android 14.

Apple Trumps Over Samsung & Sharp in Smartphone Shipments for Q4 2022

IDC Japan Co., Ltd., an IT research company located in Tokyo, has recently released data on the shipment volume of conventional smartphones in the domestic market for the fourth quarter (October to December) of 2022, as well as for the full year of 2022.

iPhone 15

According to the report, the total shipments of conventional mobile phones and smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2022 decreased by 15.8% year-on-year to 8.6 million units. The shipments of smartphones were 8.5 million units, down 16.0% year-on-year. The decline in shipments is attributed to various factors, including the end of discount campaigns by many distributors and mass retailers, the rise in the price of new products due to global inflation, and the anticipation of a decline in demand.

Apple topped the list of vendors for the quarter with 51.2%, followed by Sharp with 1.2 million units shipped (13.8% share), Samsung with 750,000 units shipped (8.7% share), FCNT with 730,000 units shipped (8.5% share), and Sony with 560,000 units shipped (6.5% share). For the full year of 2022, the shipment volume was 34.3 million units, down 8.1% from the previous year. Apple continued to lead the market with 16.6 million units (48.4% share), followed by Sharp with 3.8 million units (11.1% share), FCNT with 3.5 million units (10.3% share), Samsung with 3.1 million units (9.0% share), and Sony with 2.6 million units (7.5% share).

Although Apple’s shipments decreased by 3.8% from the previous year, the company still managed to ship 16.6 million units, which is considered a good result in recent years. FCNT, Samsung, and Sony saw significant increases in shipments, with FCNT up 34.1% year-on-year and Samsung up 17.7% year-on-year.

In conclusion, the domestic mobile phone market remained at a high level in 2022, despite the various challenges faced by the industry, including global inflation, supply chain disruptions, and soaring material prices. However, the price of smartphones is dropping at an accelerated pace, and manufacturers are keen on discovering new technologies to raise the price of devices.

Here’s How Microsoft Plans to Bring Call of Duty: Warzone to the Nintendo Switch

As per a recent filing to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Microsoft has shed some light on how it plans to bring Call of Duty games to the Nintendo Switch. The tech giant recently signed a binding 10-year agreement with Activision Blizzard to bring Call of Duty games to Nintendo users on par with Xbox players. In its filing, Microsoft presents two key points to support its argument that games like Warzone and Modern Warfare II can be brought to the Switch.

Call of Duty Mobile

Firstly, Microsoft claims that the engine behind Warzone has already been optimized to run on devices with lower performance specifications than the Switch, such as the Xbox One from 2015 and PC GPUs released as far back as 2015. Secondly, Microsoft highlighted Activision’s history of optimizing game performance for available hardware capabilities, citing examples such as Apex Legends, Doom Eternal, and Fortnite which have successfully worked on the Switch.

Sony has been quite vocal in its opposition to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, citing concerns that the tech giant will undermine Call of Duty on PlayStation. While Microsoft has offered Sony a 10-year agreement for Call of Duty, Sony has yet to accept it.

Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard has raised concerns among regulators, and the CMA is set to make a final ruling on the deal by April 26th. Despite opposition from Sony and the FTC in the US, the European Union is expected to approve the merger following Microsoft’s agreement to bring Call of Duty and other games to Nintendo and GeForce Now platforms. With a copious amount of documents and information to review, the CMA will have a lot to consider before making its decision.

Meanwhile, Call of Duty fans can look forward to an upcoming crossover event featuring Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, scheduled for release on March 21st.

Samsung Galaxy M14 5G Appears on Company’s Indian Support Page, Could Launch Soon

Earlier this month, Samsung quietly launched the Galaxy M14 5G smartphone in Ukraine. The device offers decent mid-range specs like an FHD+ LCD notched display, the Exynos 1330 chipset, and a massive 6000mAh battery. Now, it looks like this smartphone will soon make its Indian debut as it has appeared on the official support page.

Samsung

The support page has listed the Galaxy M14 5G, identifiable by the model number SM-146B/DS. This is the same model number with which the device debuted in Ukraine. The same model number was also spotted on BIS listing recently. The support page listing does not reveal anything specs related. However, we have a fair idea of what to expect.

Samsung Galaxy M14 5G specs

The Galaxy M14 5G boasts a 6.6-inch PLS LCD display with an Infinity-V notch design, offering an FHD+ resolution of 1080 x 2408 pixels and a 90Hz refresh rate. It runs on the Android 13 OS with One UI Core 5 preinstalled.

Samsung

Powered by a 2.4GHz octa-core processor, the M14 5G likely uses the Exynos 1330 chipset found in the A14 5G. It has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, with the option to expand storage up to 1TB using an external microSD card.

The phone has a 13-megapixel front-facing camera and a rear camera setup consisting of a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The primary camera can record Full HD videos at 30 fps.

The device features a 6,000mAh battery that supports 25W fast charging, surpassing the A14 5G’s 5,000mAh battery with 15W charging. Additional features include 5G connectivity, dual SIM support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, GPS, a USB-C port, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The M14 5G measures 166.8 x 77.2 x 9.4mm and weighs approximately 206 grams.

Call of Duty May be Ruined for PlayStation if Microsoft Buys Activision, Says Sony

In a recent response to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Sony expressed its ongoing opposition to Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Sony voiced concerns that Microsoft’s takeover could potentially impact the performance and quality of Call of Duty on PlayStation, resulting in fans switching to Xbox. The fear is that Microsoft could intentionally or unintentionally release a version of the game on PlayStation where bugs and errors emerge only on the game’s final level or after later updates, leading to a loss of confidence in PlayStation as a go-to venue to play Call of Duty.

Call of Duty

Sony stated that there would be no viable way for it or the CMA to assess how Microsoft chooses to allocate its resources and the quality/quantity of engineers it devotes to the PlayStation version of Call of Duty to ensure that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) would be treated fairly and equally. However, degrading the quality of Call of Duty on PlayStation would not be the wisest course of action, as it would likely lead to a bigger backlash against Microsoft and Activision than Sony.

Microsoft, on the other hand, noted in its response to the CMA that it has offered to provide Sony with parity on release date, content, features, upgrades, quality, and playability with the Xbox platform. The catch is that Sony must accept Microsoft’s proposed 10-year agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation, and Microsoft would be willing to agree to a third-party assessor to oversee the platform uniformity for the sake of the game.

In addition, Sony’s letter also reiterated its concern that Microsoft would make Call of Duty a Game Pass exclusive, thus away from PlayStation. However, Microsoft refuted this claim, stating that it made zero business sense to take Call of Duty off of PlayStation.

The CMA is set to make a final ruling on the deal by April 26th. Reports suggest that the European Union is set to give the merger the green light following news that Microsoft will bring Call of Duty and other games to Nintendo and GeForce Now platforms.

Spotify’s Redesigned Homescreen Looks Like TikTok, Instagram & YouTube Combined

Spotify has announced a redesigned homescreen that aims to help users discover new content, including video podcasts and other forms of audio. The update features a feed that is more image-heavy and vertical-scrolling, which resembles the layout of social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. The redesign comes as Spotify seeks to position itself as more than just a music app, with CEO Daniel Ek hoping to attract over 50 million “audio creators” to the platform. Spotify has invested heavily in podcasts, audiobooks, and live audio in recent years, and the redesign reflects the company’s broader ambitions.

The homescreen update will showcase autoplaying video podcasts and large photos, providing more information about playlists and podcasts. The app’s top section will still feature album and playlist covers, but users can now tap on “Music” or “Podcasts & Shows” to access a vertically scrolling feed that resembles Instagram Stories, TikTok or YouTube Shorts. The new feature allows users to quickly preview songs and playlists without diving in fully, with each item autoplaying to provide a sense of what it is. The redesign also emphasizes getting users into new things, offering them more opportunities to discover new content.

Spotify’s new design reflects the company’s desire to be the leading audio platform, and the new personalized AI is another example of this ambition. The Smart Shuffle feature, which temporarily adds tracks to existing playlists, is designed to improve the “just for you playlist” idea that Spotify has been working on for years. Additionally, DJ, an AI that spins records and hosts personalized radio shows, is another step in Spotify’s quest to become the preferred audio platform.

Spotify’s redesign shows the company’s determination to be more than just a music app. The update aims to make the app more navigable and provide more opportunities for users to discover new content, including video podcasts and other forms of audio. The design reflects the company’s broader ambitions and desire to be at the forefront of music streaming, providing users with more personalized AI features to enhance their experience.
