China Sees Sharp Fall in Semiconductor Imports: US Sanctions Taking a Toll on the Industry

China saw a sharp fall in its semiconductor imports in the first two months of 2023. According to the data published by the Chinese customs department, the country’s chip imports fell by 27% in January and February 2023. It is unsurprising that imports have declined, considering that China experienced a 15% decrease in semiconductor imports last year, the first drop of this magnitude in two decades.

According to data published by the General Administration of customs, China imported 67.6 billion Integrated Circuits (IC) in the last two months which is 26.5% less than the imports for the same period in the previous year.  The total value of imports also fell from $68.8 billion to $47.8 billion, which is a 30.5 % fall. Even though the global chip prices are falling, China is not able to take the advantage of the competitive pricing as it is facing major restrictions on trade from the US.

The ongoing US-China Trade War:

Last year the US banned the sale of advanced chips used for artificial intelligence and cloud computing to China. The Biden administration not only banned the sale of chips but also the sale of semiconductor technology, manufacturing equipment, and personnel. The US has not only banned its companies from exporting semiconductors and related technology to China but also roped in allies like Japan, Netherlands, Taiwan, and South Korea to stop their companies from exporting semiconductors to China.

The sanctions and curbs have limited China’s options for import as major semiconductor companies like Nvidia, ASML, Tokyo Electronics, and more are now barred from selling their advanced technology and products to China. To make matters worse, Washington is now planning to limit the use of semiconductors manufactured within China by foreign companies that use US technology. This means companies like Samsung and SK Hynix which have their fabrication units in China may not be allowed to manufacture and sell chips made in China.

Effects of US sanctions on the Chinese Semiconductor Industry:

The US-China trade war started in 2018 when then-president Donald Trump imposed sanctions and tariffs on exports to China in order to stop alleged unfair trade practices and intellectual property thefts.

The US has already added Chinese tech giants Huawei and ZTE to the infamous entity list.  The list has more than 639 Chinese or China-related businesses and individuals on the trade blacklist. Companies on the entity list are banned from receiving  US-origin goods, services, and technology.

China’s biggest chipmaker SMIC is also on the entity list. This has hindered the expansion plans of SMIC as the mass production at SMIC Jingcheng is postponed by a couple of quarters due to a delay in getting bottleneck equipment from foreign companies.

China is the world’s largest semiconductor market and accounts for almost one-third of global sales. The semiconductor industry plays a vital role in the country’s technology sector and accounts for almost 30% of the GDP.  However, the country is not self-sufficient in this field, as it is heavily dependent on foreign nations for advanced technology and equipment.

Though the semiconductor imports have declined in 2023, other manufacturing industries have revived and grown in the last two months after China withdrew its zero-covid policy in December 2023.

Facebook Is Finally Integrating Messenger Back into the App

Facebook just announced earlier today (9th March 2023) that it will be utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance user experience and create more opportunities for its creators. But apart from this, a major new change is that it is finally bringing back Messenger back into its original application.

The social media giant had recently announced that it had hit the 2 billion daily active user milestone and that it was planning on releasing new ‘Creative Expression’ tools for Facebook users to create 90 second reels. While all of this gives more options to the creators, the news that I personally look forward to is the reintegration of the Messenger app into Facebook. For those unaware, the tech giant had spun off its messaging inbox section into a dedicated app on the side years ago.

Facebook

This decision had a fair share of criticism. But now, Facebook is planning on making the experience more intuitive by letting users access their Messenger inbox within the app. Based on official notes, more than 140 billion messages are sent across the Facebook’s apps every day. The number of people sharing Reels has also cross the 1 billion mark on Instagram DMs and are also growing rapidly on Facebook.

Thus, the company is testing the ability for people to access their Messenger inbox within the app and plans to expand this testing phase. In other words, the social media platform is planning on offering more ways to integrate the messaging features in the platform to make it easier for users to connect and share with one another.

DuckDuckGo Introduces ChatGPT-Powered Search Tool, DuckAssist

ChatGPT taking internet by storm, as the artificial intelligence is being used in many different services. Recently, it was integrated into Bing and other Microsoft services, which brought great success to the company and caused a rise in the search engine’s popularity. Now, DuckDuckGo, another search engine, is following suit by releasing its own ChatGPT-powered search tool, DuckAssist. Here are the details…

DuckAssist: DuckDuckGo’s New ChatGPT Based AI Search Feature

DuckDuckGo has released a new tool called DuckAssist. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology called ChatGPT to give users quick and accurate answers to their search queries. The answers are gathered from websites like Wikipedia and presented in a way that looks similar to regular search results.

DuckDuckGo DuckAssist

First of all, we must warn that DuckAssist isn’t a chatbot, so users don’t need to talk to it. Instead, it shows users an automatic answer when it recognizes a question it can answer. This feature will be especially useful for straightforward questions like “What is a search engine index?” and others that have simple, factual answers. The ChatGPT-powered tool is currently in beta and is free to use on the DuckDuckGo app and browser extension.

DuckDuckGo is committed to keeping users’ data private, and DuckAssist is no exception. It won’t collect any personal information or require users to log in. The company also plans to keep users’ search and browsing history anonymous when sharing data with its partners, OpenAI and Anthropic, who helped develop the ChatGPT technology.

If DuckAssist proves to be popular, DuckDuckGo plans to roll it out to everyone using the search tool on its website. Users can also provide feedback on the AI-generated answers anonymously, which will help the company improve the tool.

Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 to Launch as an Underclocked SD8+ Gen 1 Later This Month

Qualcomm is set to release a new SoC, the SM7475 CPU, that will power the upcoming sub-premium smartphones. Lu Weibing, Xiaomi Group Vice President and General Manager of the Redmi brand, recently teased the new processor but did not provide many details. However, Digital Chat Station has revealed more information about the new SoC, including the possibility that it will arrive as an underclocked Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

Digital Chat Station claims that the CPU configuration will be identical, however, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 will have lower clock speeds and an Adreno 725 GPU running at 580 MHz, compared to the Adreno 730 running at an 800 MHz base clock found in the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Despite the lower clock speeds, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 is expected to outperform MediaTek’s Dimensity 8200. Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 will be manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm fabrication node.

According to Digital Chat Station, multiple smartphone brands are lined up to launch their smartphones with the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 chipset, and we could see the launch of the first smartphone powered by the SM7475 chipset by the end of this month.

WHYLAB, a well-known tech influencer, has shared on Weibo that the upcoming Redmi Note 12 Turbo smartphone could be powered by this SoC. The device is expected to launch globally as the POCO F5.

Xiaomi, Realme, OPPO, Vivo, and other smartphone makers are expected to adopt the new chipset. Qualcomm and Xiaomi are both known for their innovation and partnership in the smartphone business, and the new products from both companies are expected to provide higher performance, efficiency, and connectivity for users looking for high-end gadgets at low rates.

PS5 Finally Gets Discord Voice Chat Integration in the Latest Update Alongside Other Features

Gaming on the Sony PS5 has become an increasingly attractive option for many people. However, while the console offers great performance, its native PlayStation Party communication app has left much to be desired for multiplayer gamers.

Thankfully, Sony has now released an update that incorporates Discord voice chat integration into the PS5 console, alongside other features. This update will give PS5 gamers access to a range of new features, including the ability to join voice chats, send messages, share memes, and access various servers and communities.

Perhaps the most exciting feature is that PS5 players will now be able to use voice chat with their PC friends when playing crossplay games. Additionally, Discord has implemented voice chat cards, similar to an inbuilt invite system, which allows for easy game joining. The Friends Who Play tile also enables users to see which of their friends are online and currently playing a game. Moreover, gamers can share their screen or request a screen share from a friend’s profile, making it possible to stream and watch games live for their friends.

Other than that, PS5’s recent update also has many other features including VRR support for 1440p when playing games that support VRR. However, to take advantage of this feature, gamers will need a VRR-compatible HDMI 2.1 display.

Sony PlayStation 5

The Age of Apple: The iPhone Isn’t Capturing the Attention of Users Over 40

Apple has a lot of influence over consumers, especially in the US. We already know which Apple products are popular, but it’s not always clear which age groups are driving this popularity. That’s where the latest survey from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) comes in. The survey aimed to find out which age groups are using which Apple products. The results show that the iPhone is mostly used by younger people. Here are the details…

Who Uses Apple Products? Survey Reveals Age Profile of Users

According to CIRP reports, iPhone is mostly used by younger people. 22% of iPhone users are aged 18-24, while the 25-34 and 35-44 age groups make up 27% and 23% of the iPhone user base, respectively. The iPad and the iPhone have a similar age split, but the Mac is even more popular among younger users.

Apple iPhone 12

The 25-34 age group has the most users across all three devices, with 27% of iPhone users, 28% of iPad users, and 31% of Mac users falling into this age group. This suggests that while young people play a big role in Apple’s success, they’re not the only ones. Almost 70% of all Apple users are under 45 years old. This confirms what past reports have hinted at, namely that young Americans are a big reason why Apple is so popular. There aren’t many iPhone, iPad, and Mac users above the age of 45.

This suggests that Apple’s current consumer base is mostly made up of younger generations. However, this may change in the future as Apple continues to inspire a loyal following. It’s clear that younger people are driving Apple’s success, but there are still plenty of older users too. Only time will tell if this distribution will change over the years.

Apple 5G Modem Will Be Made on TSMC’s 3nm Process

TSMC has been a major supplier of Apple for its proprietary chipsets. And now, the company is apparently planning on having its new 5G model being built on TSMC’s 3nm process as as well. So here are all the details.

For those unaware, the Cupertino based giant has been placing orders for its chips that power its PCs and mobile devices with the world’s largest contract chipmaker for sometime now. TSMC’s latest advancement in semiconductor manufacturing has allowed it to build chips on 3nm process nodes. The smaller the processor nodes the more powerful and energy efficient are the chips that are built using this process.

Apple

So for its next generation of chips, Apple will likely account for a large portion of TSMC’s 3nm process capacity in 2023. One part of its orders would likely be for its in house 5G modem that is built using the latest semiconductor technology from TSMC. The same process is expected to also power its next gen A series and M series processors. According to a Commercial Times report, the supply chain sources have revealed that risk production of the Apple 5G modem will begin in the second half of this year.

Risk production is basically the stage where the foundry builds chips and works out any issues to raise the yields. Following this phase, the volume production begins where wafer output usually rises slowly in the first half of next year. In other words, it appears that the iPhone maker will have to rely on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 5G modem chips for at least this year.

Google has been working on its first ever foldable smartphone from its Pixel series from a while now. But prior to any official announcement, it appears that the Pixel Fold has just been spotted in the wild. So here are all the details.

Google

Just recently, an image had been shared on Reddit. The user who shared this image claimed that the live image of the foldable device is the upcoming Pixel Fold. The Reddit user also added that the foldable smartphone featured a blue color with thin bezels and was being carried by an employee of the Search Engine giant. Out of all the images that were uploaded, only a single one was clear while the rest was blurry.

The supposed Google employee got on board a train in NYC at 14th street which is also where the company’s office is situated. Furthermore, the Redittor added that the camera bump on the back as well as the UI of the device is what made them recognize the Pixel Fold. Interestingly enough, the user added that the person was trying to hide the camera bump. Unfortunately, this was all the discernible information available from this live sighting.
