The Future of Huawei Under Threat as US Considers Export Ban

Huawei is losing ground in the smartphone market. The company lost access to Google services due to the US embargo and subsequently abandoned Android, opting to use its own operating system called HarmonyOS. However, this plan has caused the company to struggle in markets outside of China. Although Huawei is searching for solutions in alternative areas, it seems that the USA will continue to pose a challenge for the Chinese tech giant with ban threat. Here are the details….

US government warns of total export ban for Huawei

Huawei has been aggressively pivoting away from smartphone business towards cloud technology and other business solutions. However, this strategy is now facing a new threat with the U.S. export ban being extended to all products from the company. The U.S. Commerce Department first imposed export controls against Huawei in 2019 citing national security risks. This decision has banned the export of semiconductors produced with U.S. technology in 2020.

This move drastically impacted Huawei’s mobile operations, cutting off its access to high-performance semiconductors needed for smartphones. Consequently, Huawei’s annual revenue peaked in 2020 and began to decline, with the consumer products segment, including smartphones, contributing to more than half of total sales. As a result, Huawei focused its resources on business products and broadened its cloud service offerings.

It organized business-to-business units into internal “corps” and recruited experts from various sectors to develop digitization solutions for corporate clients. This reorganization has allowed Huawei to halt the drop in revenue, with sales appearing to have stood at 636.9 billion yuan ($92.1 billion) last year, largely unchanged from 2021.

However, the U.S. is preparing to impose another round of sanctions that could block all exports to Huawei. The Commerce Department has added Huawei to the Entity List, allowing it to import off-the-shelf products on a case-by-case basis. The Biden administration is also considering a rule that would prohibit exports to companies in third countries that supply Huawei, potentially canceling permits granted to U.S. companies Intel and Qualcomm to sell certain products to Huawei.

If new sanctions are imposed, they would hit Huawei’s non-smartphone consumer devices such as televisions, personal computers, and smartwatches. While the impact on cloud and other services is expected to be more limited, new sanctions could severely disrupt the maintenance of base stations, which accounted for over 40% of the group revenue in 2021.

Despite the challenges, Huawei remains the global leader in base stations, holding a 30% market share, and has partnered with telecoms worldwide in providing 5G services. Huawei’s organizational revamp has allowed the company to stay afloat, but the future remains uncertain as the U.S. tightens its grip on the company.

Neuralink Human Trials Request for Brain Implant Denied by FDA: Report

Elon Musk‘s Neuralink has apparently been denied human trials for its brain implants by the FDA. The company has been working in the field of brain computer interface but was denied the trials back in 2022. So here are all the details.

According to a new report, former and current employees of the startup have revealed that “The agency’s major safety concerns involved the device’s lithium battery; the potential for the implant’s tiny wires to migrate to other areas of the brain; and questions over whether and how the device can be removed without damaging brain tissue.” The FDA has expressed concerns regarding the battery system and its novel transdermal charging capabilities.

Neuralink

The issue is related to the device’s chance of failing after being implanted. The new report added that the agency is looking for reassurances that the battery is “very unlikely to fail”. In other words, the FDA would only approve of the trials once Neuralink proves safety of the implant since the discharge of electrical current or heat energy from a ruptured pack can possibly lead to burning of the surrounding tissue.

The FDA also stated that there were potential risks if the device would be needed to be removed for upgrades or replacements since the small size of the electrical leads that extend into the patient’s brain. One Starlink employee stated that “He can’t appreciate that this is not a car. This is a person’s brain. This is not a toy.”

The Potential of 6G Sensing Technology Unveiled at MWC 2023

Recently, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, telecommunication companies showcased their latest technologies and innovations, which will shape the future of telecommunications. One of the most noteworthy innovations is 6G, the next generation of mobile networks. It promises to revolutionize the way we interact with the digital world. At the MWC 2023, Nokia demonstrated how sensing technology will be used in 6G. Here are the details…

Nokia Demonstrates 6G Sensing Technology for Personalized Interaction and Safety

Nokia demonstrated 6G’s potential to “sense” the human body. By using radio waves, the sixth-generation mobile antenna will be able to detect people, objects, or animals. In the demonstration that you can watch below, Nokia presented a digital piano that uses 6G sensing to identify the person’s location and adjust the sound accordingly. As you can see, the technology manages to locate the woman in the video without using any camera or lens.

The second demonstration showed how 6G sensing technology can be used to ensure pedestrian safety. A vehicle equipped with 6G sensing technology can detect if a pedestrian is in close proximity and will not be allowed to move until the pedestrian is out of range. Both of these examples highlight the potential applications of 6G sensing technology in the future and the possibilities that lie ahead for the telecommunications industry. Both examples are operating at 27 GHz. Considering the current frequency rates, this is an incredibly high value.

Nokia 6G

Nokia is also taking 6G to the moon, installing the first-ever mobile telephone network on the lunar surface. This network will allow for communication and data transfer in remote and technically demanding places on Earth, such as inside mines, on oil rigs, and near wind farms.

Huawei Exec Shares Camera Samples of P60 Pro’s Periscope Lens

The Huawei P60 series of flagship smartphones is expected to launch soon. However, prior to its release, there have been a number of rumors and reports surfacing regarding these high end devices. Now, the latest info arrives from an executive, who has apparently shared some camera samples.

Huawei

For those unaware, the P series from the Chinese tech giant typically focuses on offering a great photography experience along with top notch hardware. Thus, its camera is undoubtedly its highlighting aspect. According to known tipster Digital Chat Station, the top end P60 Pro model will feature the RYYB color matrix on its periscope lens. For those unaware, a periscope lens is folded up in a smartphone’s body to allow for improved optical zoom without losing image quality.

A regular camera sensor usually comes with an RGB color matrix (consisting of one red, two green, and one blue) while the RYYB color matrix replaces the two green pixels for yellow pixels. This was first employed by Huawei on its P30 Pro model for an improved method of taking in light. However, the RYYB matrix sensor was skipped in the P50 Pro, but Digital Chat Station claims that the sensor will return on this year’s model, which will reportedly feature a 64 megapixel OmniVision OMB 64B periscope sensor.

Huawei

At the same time, He Gang, Head of Huawei Smart Devices, has shared new camera samples from an unannounced Huawei smartphone. These are believed to be taken from the P60 Pro model and are also images taken from the periscope lens. In the social media post, the executive just states that the “New Phone Takes Great Photos.”

Huawei Disguised Its Chips With Tape and Coolers at MWC 2023

Huawei, a leading manufacturer of servers and communication equipment, is facing significant challenges when it comes to procuring the chips necessary for its products. While it may be difficult to obtain these components, the company is not without options. Huawei is facing a significant amount of difficulty stepping around US Sanctions, but the company is still making do. However, it does not wish to disclose the sources of its chip supply. In an attempt to maintain the confidentiality of its suppliers, Huawei has taken measures to conceal the identity of the chips it uses in its products.

At the Mobile World Congress 2023 in Barcelona, Huawei unveiled its latest server motherboards, which featured all chips covered with disguising tape and coolers. This move is a clear indication of the company’s reluctance to reveal the sources of its chips. The reason for this is that virtually all chips available in the market today are designed using electronic design automation tools that are developed in the U.S. and produced on equipment containing technologies created in America. As a result, suppliers of these chips need to obtain appropriate licenses from the U.S. Department of Commerce to sell them to Huawei or its subsidiaries. However, obtaining these licenses can be a challenging process for the company.

To overcome this obstacle, Huawei may resort to purchasing chips on the gray market or using other means to obtain hardware from its developers. By keeping its chip suppliers under wraps, Huawei hopes to safeguard its trade secrets and maintain a competitive edge. This is evident from the images published on Twitter by Jay Goldberg, which depict Huawei concealing the markings on some of its chips.

Despite the limitations imposed by the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China, Huawei remains a major player in the server and communication equipment markets. The company continues to sell its products in China and other countries, but it needs chips to build these devices. While the loss of access to advanced semiconductor production outside of China has hampered its chip development, Huawei is reportedly collaborating with China-based SMIC to build a fab capable of producing the chips and system-in-packages it needs to manufacture its products. By taking such measures, Huawei is demonstrating its commitment to overcoming the challenges it faces and maintaining its position as a leading player in the tech industry.

To begin with, a Tecno phone with model number CK8n has appeared in the database of the Bluetooth SIG. The listing confirms that the device will be called the Tecno Camon 20 Pro 5G when it arrives on the market. The listing also reveals support for Bluetooth 5.3.

The FCC has approved the exact same device. The listing reveals that the device measures 163 x 76 x 8mm, which indicates that it may house a smaller display than the Camon 19 Pro 5G. The reason behind it is that the Camon 19 Pro 5G measures 166.7 x 74.3 x 8.6mm and houses a 6.8-inch display.

The FCC documents further reveal that the Camon 20 Pro 5G will have 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of built-in storage. It further reveals that the device will house a 5,000mAh battery (4,900mAh typical value) and offer 33W fast charging. These specifications are also available on the predecessor model. There is a possibility that the device may come equipped with a MediaTek chipset.

The Camon 20 Pro 5G’s schematic, available in the FCC documents, shows that it could be equipped with a triple camera unit. The right edge of the device has volume buttons and a power key.

In related news, the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) certified the Camon 20 Premier 5G in January. Hence, it appears that the lineup may include at least three models, such as Camon 20, 20 Premier 5G, and Camon 20 Pro 5G.
