Android Smartphones in India Differ From the Rest of the World

Android is the world’s most popular mobile operating system, used by billions of devices made by hundreds of different manufacturers. Although the overall experience remains similar for most users, Google has had to make a series of changes to its Android platform in India following a ruling by the country’s competition watchdog. Here are the details…

India to Receive Unique Android Experience with Optional Google Apps

According to the latest reports, Android smartphones in India will receive a version of Google Mobile Services (GMS) that comes with optional Google apps. The new Indian Mobile Application Distribution Agreement (IMADA) between OEMs and Google will only require the installation of the Google Play Store. Rather than the 11 key Google apps mandated by the standard agreement in other markets. However, Google will offer a “per-app bounty” to smartphone makers who pre-install any of these 11 apps.

Google Mobilem Services (GMS)

The IMADA also differs from other markets in that it doesn’t require smartphone makers to include; Google search bar, Google app folder, or Play Store icon on the main screen. Additionally, the agreement will allow Indian users to choose their default search engine during the setup process. Similar to the provision in Europe, with this option expected to be available from Q2 2023.

The changes will only apply to smartphones sold in India. The introduction of these changes is significant as it shows that Google is willing to make adjustments to its products and services to meet the specific needs of different markets. It’s a positive development that Google is willing to work with regulators and tailor its offerings accordingly.

Android smartphones

The changes is not yet officially confirmed by Google. However, the report is in line with recent developments in India’s tech industry, India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market after China, and companies like Google must work with Indian regulators to stay in the market. However, we will see in the future whether the gap between the Asian country and the US technology giant will open up due to these developments.

South Korea Announces Plans for 6G Network Service Launch in 2028

The deployment of 5G infrastructure is underway wor5G infrastructure works are continuing at full speed almost all over the world. However, the number of people who can use this modern connection technology today is very limited. While 5G is available in a few pilot test areas, it is not yet widely available in many regions. Nevertheless, in developed countries such as South Korea, which is already one of the world’s leading technology hubs, 5G is more widely available. In fact, South Korea has recently announced that it plans to launch its 6G network. Here are the details…

South Korea plans to launch 6G network service in 2028

South Korea has recently announced that it plans to launch its 6G network service in 2028, two years ahead of schedule, as it seeks to secure an early advantage in the future wireless frequencies. The country’s Ministry of Science and ICT announced the K-Network 2030 plan, which aims to develop world-class 6G technologies, innovate software-based next-generation mobile networks, and strengthen the network supply chain.

The advanced plan also aims to encourage local companies to produce materials, parts, and equipment for 6G technology in the country, and to develop an open RAN that is compatible with any mobile device and enables mobile carriers and enterprises to offer flexible services. Additionally, the ministry is conducting a feasibility study for a research and development project on core 6G technologies worth KRW 625.3 billion ($481.7 million).

South Korea’s efforts to lead in the development of 6G technology come as the country seeks to maintain its leading position in the global competition for future network infrastructure. As the demand for higher speeds and lower latency in wireless communications continues to rise, the country is looking to retain its competitive edge following the 5G network race. According to the German analysis firm IPlytics, South Korea accounted for 25.9 percent of the number of 5G patents last year, closely following the market leader China with 26.8 percent.

6G

The advanced plan will also create new opportunities for local companies and researchers to participate in the development of 6G technology. By encouraging the production of materials, parts, and equipment for 6G technology in the country, the government hopes to create new jobs and promote economic growth. The open RAN system will also enable mobile carriers and enterprises to offer flexible services, which could create new business opportunities in the telecommunications sector.

With this move, the country hopes to secure an early lead in the next generation of wireless technology, as well as promote innovation and economic growth.

Sandbox VR and Netflix Bring Squid Game to Real-Life with Immersive VR Experience

Netflix‘s Squid Game, which premiered last year, quickly became one of the most watched series of all time. While fans eagerly await the release of the second season, Netflix is busy leveraging the brand to its fullest potential. The latest partnership involves a Hong Kong-based VR start-up, Sandbox VR, which specializes in providing an immersive gaming experience with cutting-edge equipment and hardware. Here are the details…

Sandbox VR and Netflix Bring Squid Game to Real-Life with Immersive VR Experience

Hong Kong based Sandbox VR has collaborated with numerous entertainment and media companies to create realistic and fully immersive experiences for users. Their Star Trek-themed game, developed in collaboration with CBS, was a hit among sci-fi fans. The company’s newest collaboration with Netflix is based on the dystopian thriller Squid Game, which has gained worldwide attention for its intense gameplay and gripping storyline.

Squid Game

According to CEO and founder Steve Zhao, the company’s content team in Hong Kong has been working on the Squid Game experience for the past five months, and it will be launched later this year at Sandbox VR’s arcades across the globe. Sandbox VR’s expansion plans have been supported by investors such as Adreessen Horowitz, Gobi Partners, and Alibaba Group Holding. The company has 34 locations worldwide and is building 12 new ones.

Despite the setbacks of the pandemic, the company has rebounded and is now focused on increasing its global footprint to 40 locations by the end of 2022. Zhao confirms that the company is already profitable and has no plans to raise new funds at this time. Sandbox VR’s journey has not been without challenges, and the pandemic dealt a severe blow to the company’s business, leading to its US operations filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020.

However, the company has recovered and is now expanding its headcount, with 50 people working on research and development across product, technology, and content. Though the company’s growth in mainland China has been slow, it is making steady progress, and Zhao expects the location in Shanghai to return to normal operations this year. The company’s focus, for now, remains on the US market, where its collaborations with leading entertainment companies have proven to be a winning strategy.

As the virtual reality market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, Sandbox VR is well-positioned to take advantage of this trend. With its unique approach to location-based VR and collaborations with entertainment giants like CBS and Netflix, the company hopes to continue its growth trajectory and offer guests a fully immersive experience that meets their fantasies. With the Squid Game collaboration, Sandbox VR is confident it will attract even more visitors to its VR facilities.

TSMC Pushes Back Opening of European Factory by Two Years

TSMC, one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, has postponed its plans for a new factory in Europe due to the changing supply and demand of automotive semiconductors. Originally set to open earlier, the European factory will now be delayed for at least two years, and it’s not expected to be completed until 2025.

TSMC Pushes Back Opening of European Factory by Two Years

TSMC had been exploring the possibility of establishing a special process fab in Europe focused on automotive technology, based on customer needs and the support of governments in various countries. However, with the current correction of the semiconductor economy, major foundries are now dispatching more production capacity to produce automotive chips, resulting in an improvement of the chip shortage and even a balance between supply and demand.

TSMC

The delay in TSMC’s European factory could mean that European automotive chip customers will continue to stay in TSMC’s Taiwan plant, or even move to new plants in Japan and the United States, which would help TSMC use the production capacity of its overseas plants. Meanwhile, Japanese officials are encouraging TSMC to set up a second fab in Japan, supported by the introduction of extreme ultraviolet light (EUV) machines. This could allow TSMC’s Japanese plant to support more advanced process needs of local and international automotive semiconductor customers.

Industry analysts believe that this shift could be beneficial for TSMC, especially given the fluctuating economic climate and high inflation pressure, which make the cost of setting up factories in Europe much higher than in the United States and Japan.

LineageOS 20 Arrives on the Google Pixel 6, Pixel 7, & More

The LineageOS team has been working hard to bring the latest LineageOS 20 software based on Android 13 to more smartphones. After releasing the first set of official builds for more than 50 devices, including the older Pixel phones, the team has now added support for all of Google’s Tensor-powered phones, including the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series. Here are the details.

LineageOS-20

The latest devices being added to the official roster are the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 6a, and Pixel 6 Pro. This will be the first time Google’s Tensor-powered phones will be able to run the popular custom ROM. Last month, the development team released a new version, bringing full Android 13 support to a sizeable number of devices, including Google phones up to the Pixel 4.

Below you can find the detailed instructions and download links for the newly added phones:

  • Pixel 6 (oriole)- Wiki
  • Pixel 6 Pro (raven)- Wiki
  • Pixel 6a (bluejay)- Wiki
  • Pixel 7 (panther)-Wiki
  • Pixel 7 Pro (cheetah)-Wiki

The new LineageOS 20 brings all the new Android 13 features as well as a revamped camera app, Aperture. The custom ROM is known for its near-stock UI and superior security and privacy features. However, these features may not impress Pixel users as their phones already come with a clean and bloatware-free UI.

You may install the LineageOS 20 on your Pixel 6 or 7 series device if you want to mod it without any restrictions. However, you should know that custom ROMs may void your device’s warranty, and they can even brick your phone if not installed properly. Additionally, some apps may not work properly with custom ROMs.

A 91Mobiles report, citing tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore, claims that Oppo is testing a new affordable smartphone in India with model number CPH2527. However, the unknown device won’t have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor or curved display.

Details about this upcoming device are pretty scarce. We can expect it to arrive as a mid-range or budget model with decent specifications, like a large display, capable cameras, and a long-lasting battery. We should be learning more about the smartphone in the coming days. Meanwhile, let’s go through the specifications of the Oppo Reno 8T.

OPPO Reno8 T 5G specifications

OnePlus Ace 2

Now, a new report has revealed that the OnePlus Ace 2 Dimensity Edition will be launching next month. The leak comes from popular Weibo tipster DCS (via) who also reveals some more details about the upcoming phone.

According to DCS, the Ace 2 Dimensity Edition will have a 6.74-inch AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution, offering 2772 × 1240 pixels, 1450 nits of peak brightness, 100 percent DCI P3 color gamut, 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and an adaptive refresh rate that can go up to 120Hz. The report also mentions that the Ace 2 Dimensity Edition will have a different camera setup which will consist of a 64MP OV64M main camera, an 8MP Sony IMX355 camera, and a 2MP macro camera.

Compared to the 50MP Sony IMX890 primary camera, the 64MP Omnivision sensor is quite a downgrade. Other specifications appear to remain the same. This means that the device will likely have a 5,000mAh battery paired with 100W SuperVOOC fast charging and an Android 13-based ColorOS 13 operating system. The price of this is expected to be lower that the OnePlus Ace 2.
