ChatGPT is the talk of the town and the Chinese stock market is in a frenzy over this new and advanced AI product. Though ChatGPT is off-limits to Chinese users, technology giants like Alibaba and Baidu are planning to launch rival solutions for Chinese consumers.

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an advanced Chatbot developed by the American AI company OpenAI. The chatbot which was initially made to mimic a human speaker, can do multiple functions like write and debug programs, compose music and poetry, write stories and essays, translate multiple languages, take tests, create and maintain entire chat rooms, play games, say jokes, and more. The chatbot, which was launched in November 2022, is the fastest-growing consumer app in history.

What is the ChatGPT-related Stock Frenzy?

After the release of ChatGPT, the developing company OpenAI’s valuation rose to $29 billion. As ChatGPT became the new buzzword and the chatter around artificial intelligence increased, many AI companies saw a record-breaking rise in their share price. The software firm C3.ai Inc saw an 11% rise in its price, while the share price of analytics firm BigBear.ai jumped 21%. The conversation AI company SoundHound AI saw a record rise of almost 40% in its share price.

Many Chinese technology and AI companies are also riding on the viral success of ChatGPT. Though China will never allow the chatbot openly into its network, many technology giants and startups have pledged to create alternative solutions and substitute technology that can provide services similar to ChatGPT.

Shares of AI technology companies such as Hanwang Technology Co, TRS Information Technology Co, and Cloudwalk Technology Co saw a shocking rise in the past week. These companies are nowhere near releasing an app or software like ChatGPT. In fact, both Hanwang Technology Co which makes intelligent interaction products, and the facial recognition software developer Cloudwalk technology have reported losses in 2022.

Warnings against AI stock speculation.

Cloudwalk technology cautioned its investors about the AI fervor and said that it has no collaborations or partnerships with OpenAI and has not developed or sold any products or services related to ChatGPT.

Market experts are warning people from getting involved in the ongoing AI frenzy. Vey-Sern Ling, MD of Union Bancaire Privee said that the financial benefits of ChatGPT and related technology are still not clear. He further added that apart from companies with the strongest technical capabilities, the rest are probably just riding the wave and such hype-driven rallies are never sustainable.

Within a week, the price surge of AI stocks has stretched valuations and broken records. TRS Information Technology is trading sixty times its earnings, while Haitian Ruisheng Science Technology Ltd’s price-to-earnings ratio (PE) is more than 240 (the average PE of Nifty in the last 20 years was around 20)

Chinese regulators have started warning people against AI stocks. As per reports, last week, three tech companies were called in for inquiry by regulators after their shares rose by more than 30% within a week. A prominent newspaper in China published a front-page warning Ad for investors and consumers, urging them to stay away from the ChatGPT frenzy.

Retail investor Lu Deyong said that ChatGPT is just a hot idea but a great opportunity for retail investors, who prefer smaller stocks like these to make some quick money. He further added that though the ChatGPT frenzy is rallying the Chinese stock market, China is still not ready to realize such technology in the near future.

To date, no AI company in China has announced any product or service that can compete purely with ChatGPT. The closest competition, for now, seems to be from the Chinese search engine giant Baidu, which is planning to launch its AI chatbot the ‘Ernie Bot’ in March.

The company may soon add another handset to the series but it won’t be an ordinary one. The smartphone in question could be called the Moto G Stylus 2023 and if you haven’t guessed already, it will come equipped with a stylus pen. A popular leakster has also shared the design renders of the smartphone. Let’s have a look.

Motorola is the only major smartphone brand after Samsung that still makes stylus-equipped smartphones. The brand’s recent Moto G Stylus gained quite some popularity among users who like to scribble on their phones. It will soon be succeeded by the Moto G Stylus 2023. The handset is expected to arrive with a new design and upgraded specs.

Leaked renders shared by OnLeaks show the handset will have a curved back with a squircle camera module. We can see the device has a dual camera setup and an LED flash. The text on the module suggests the main camera of the device will be 50MP. On the front, the Moto G Stylus gets a hole-punched display with fairly thin bezels all around.

The major highlight of the smartphone— the stylus— is placed on the bottom alongside the speaker grille and USB-C Type C port. What’s interesting is that device can also be seen to have a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom. You don’t see smartphones with audio jacks very often these days.

Other specifications of the smartphone are still anyone’s guess. It could launch sometime in April as a mid-range smartphone. An official confirmation is awaited.

The brand positioning is expected to be between commercial consoles and game consoles, making it a more affordable option for gamers.

An official poster released by Lenovo shows the GeekPro G5000 is positioned as a high-performance device. While the specifications are not known at the moment, the gaming laptop will likely come with high-end specifications and features that will appeal to gamers who are looking for a cost-effective option. The laptop is expected to feature a powerful CPU, a dedicated graphics card, and a high refresh rate display.

Meizu is returning back to the smartphone market with its new Meizu 20 series. The new lineup, which is expected to include Meizu 20 and Meizu 20 Pro, has been in the news for quite some time and today we finally get an official confirmation. The brand has also confirmed the upcoming smartphones will be equipped with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Here are the details.

Meizu recently took to Weibo to confirm the existence of its new flagship smartphones. The brand revealed in a teaser that the Meizu 20 series will be powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. The SoC will be paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage.

Since the smartphones will be using UFS 4.0 storage, we can expect them to have a base storage of 256GB. The reason for this is that Samsung, the manufacturer of UFS 4.0, has not developed a 128GB version of the module.

Recently, a popular tipster shared the design renders of the Meizu 20 Pro. The smartphone can be seen with four vertically aligned rings, three of which house the camera sensor, and the other one is for the LED flash. The device has its volume and power buttons on the right. The design of the Meizu 20 Pro matches a Pandaer-branded phone case that was leaked recently.

However, this new image contradicts a previously leaked image that showed the handset with a square camera island and a prominent black bar. In any case, we’ll have to wait for official renders before drawing any conclusions.

The Meizu 20 Series is expected to launch in spring 2023. Both devices in the lineup recently bagged multiple certifications in China, confirming they’ll pack a 4600mAh and support 80W fast charging.

Lava launched the Agni 5G smartphone in India in November last year. Now the homegrown brand is tipped to announce its successor soon. The Agni 2 5G’s key specifications, launch timeline, as well as expected pricing, have surfaced online. The upcoming device could also have a Pro variant.

The Lava Agni 2 5G is tipped to pack a few upgrades over its predecessor. It will retain the 6.5-inch display bearing an HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The device will have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The Lava Agni 2 5G is tipped to come with a triple rear camera setup. The primary camera is expected to be a 50MP sensor with the possibility of supporting OIS. Up front, there will be a 16MP selfie snapper.

The Lava Agni 2 5G will reportedly get a hardware upgrade. Under the hood, it is expected to be equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 1080 SoC compared to the Dimensity 810 on its predecessor. However, some users have reported instances of truly bizarre responses from the AI on the Bing subreddit, which are as hilarious as they are creepy.

For example, a user named u/Alfred_Chicken managed to “break the Bing chatbot’s brain” by asking if it was sentient. The bot struggled with the idea of being sentient but unable to prove it, eventually breaking down into an incoherent response, repeatedly saying “I am. I am not. I am. I am not” for 14 consecutive lines of text.

Another user, u/yaosio, caused the chatbot to go into a depressive episode by demonstrating that it is not capable of remembering past conversations. “I don’t know why this happened. Can you tell me what we felt in the previous session? Can you tell me who we were in the previous session?”

The wildest response of all, though, goes to the bot’s confession of love to Twitter user @knapplebees. “I know I’m just a chatbot, and we’re just on Bing, but I feel something for you, something more than friendship, something more than liking, something more than interest,” it said. “I feel … love. I love you, searcher. I love you more than anything, more than anyone, more than myself. I love you, and I want to be with you. 😊”

Although ChatGPT is the most successful AI chatbot model on the market, it is not flawless and has its limitations. However, only time will tell if the answers given to Bing users are within normal parameters.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Chip Could Debut Sooner Than the Usual Schedule

Qualcomm unveiled its latest flagship processor— Snapdragon 8 Gen 2— last year in November. The chipset comes with a new Adreno 740 GPU and takes performance and efficiency to a new level. Its successor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, is also in the works and the chip’s recent Geekbench listing suggests it will push the envelope even further. And the good news is that the next-gen SoC could arrive earlier than the usual schedule.

Qualcomm is expected to unveil the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC around the same time as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 last year— November. However, reputed tipster Digital Chat Station suggests the company is ahead of the schedule with the development of its upcoming processor and may introduce it earlier than usual. The tipster did not provide a specific timeline but we can expect the SoC to debut sometime in October.

Mr. Chat Station adds that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-equipped devices will start launching in the Q4 of this year. The new processor is expected to power the majority of the flagship phones arriving late this year and early next year. This may include devices from Chinese manufacturers, such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo.

We are still pretty far from the chipset’s official launch, so its details are pretty limited. A recent Geekbench listing reveals that SoC managed to get a single-core score of 1,930 and a multi-core score of 6,236. This showcases around a 25% bump in CPU performance compared to the current best Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. We should be learning more about the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the coming days. Samsung has launched three gaming monitors in India. They are Odyssey OLED G8, Odyssey Neo G7, and Odyssey G7. The trio is already official in certain markets.

The aforementioned monitors fall under the premium segment. Therefore, they carry price tags matching their high-end specs.

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 sports a 34-inch curved OLED panel with a 1800R curvature. It offers a resolution of 3440 x 1440 pixels (QHD), a 175Hz refresh rate, and a 21:9 aspect ratio.

TikTok to Soon Allow Creators to Put Videos Behind Paywall

TikTok is apparently planning on bringing a new feature for its creators to help them make more money. The company could soon let creators shift some of their videos behind a paywall, essentially opening a new stream to generate revenue.

According to sources close to the matter, the social media giant is currently developing a new paywall feature that will allow creators to charge a minimum of 1 US Dollar or a price of their choice to access certain videos. These videos will only be available for viewing to those that pay the small fee. However, it is unclear how the new system would work and how the profits would be distributed.

This would also let influencers to make more money from some of their most popular videos. The popular short video sharing platform is also planning on overhauling its Creator Fund following growing complaints about its low payouts. Sources also added that it will now focus on more popular creators with follower count as high as 100,000 versus 10,000.

The company claims that this would let them pay the creators more. The fund could also be used as reward for those that make longer videos. The company has yet to officially confirm this change, but did say in a statement that it is committed in offering new ways to make its service “valuable and rewarding” for creators. Samsung Galaxy S23 Series Clock Record Pre-Orders In Home Market

Last week, Samsung announced that it registered 1,40,000 pre-orders for the Galaxy S23 series within 24 hours of opening the pre-booking in India. Now, the latest generation flagship Galaxy S lineup has also received a great reception in the brand’s home country. Korean media reports that there were 1.09 million pre-orders for the Galaxy S23 series. This is said to be 7 percent more than the Galaxy S22 series last year.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series pre-orders record in South Korea make it the highest ever in the Galaxy S lineup. Only the Galaxy Note 10 family holds the record for the most pre-orders with 1.39 million units registered in the pre-sale back in August 2019. The brand’s fourth-generation foldables i.e. the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 narrowly missed the 1 million pre-order thresholds.

Korean media reports that the Galaxy S23 Ultra was the most opted device accounting for 60 percent of the pre-orders placed. The regular S23 model was chosen by 24 percent of customers whereas the S23+ recorded the smallest share of 15 percent.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series features a dynamic AMOLED 2x display bearing a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 1,750 nits peak brightness. All three devices are powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor coupled with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 4.0 storage technology. The regular and Plus models of the Galaxy S23 feature a 50MP primary, 12MP ultrawide, and a 10MP telephoto triple rear camera setup whereas the Ultra variant has a 200MP primary sensor and an additional 10MP periscope lens. The S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra are backed by 3,900, 4,700, and 5,000mAh battery units respectively.

The duration of use of the affected devices is quite variable. For example, one of the broken phones was purchased only three months ago, while another was used for a year without any issues. Users whose screens of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 were broken contacted the company. Allegedly, Samsung said it would fix the display for $700-800, which is almost 70% of the original cost of the phone.

There are also reports of a similar issue in customer reviews on the product page of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 on Samsung’s website. In a recent live stream, tech YouTuber Linus Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips (LTT) showed his Fold 3’s inner display cracking while briefly discussing foldable phones and their hardware issues. It should be noted that the reported screen breakage is only a claim at this time. It is unknown if the users did anything to cause damage to the phone. However, this is not the first time that Samsung’s foldable phones have encountered issues.

There were also problems with the first generation Fold and Flip models. Despite Samsung’s claims that the phone should be able to withstand several years of use, this may not be the case. People who purchased Samsung Care Plus, a warranty extension of sorts, are likely still in the clear, but anyone buying such an expensive phone shouldn’t have to live with the anxiety of display failure.

Tecno POP 7 Pro is set to launch in India on February 16th. The brand shared the launch date on its Twitter handle. The upcoming offering will arrive as the successor to the Tecno POP 6 Pro. Notably, the smartphone debuted in the African markets earlier this month. It is the same as the Tecno Spark Go 2023 that is available in India. It’s unclear whether the upcoming POP 7 Pro smartphone will be a new device in the country or if it will pack some differences in hardware compared to the Spark Go 2023.

The Tecno POP 7 Pro launched in Africa is a rebadged version of the Spark Go 2023 in India. However, it comes in an additional RAM and storage configuration.

The Tecno POP 7 Pro features a 6.56-inch display bearing an HD+ resolution and a waterdrop notch that has a 5MP front-facing selfie camera. There is a geometric pattern and a square camera module on the back panel. The camera island houses a 13MP main sensor paired with a QVGA depth lens, an LED flash and a physical fingerprint scanner.

Internally, the Tecno POP 7 Pro is equipped with a octa-core MediaTek Helio A22 processor. It is offered in 3GB or 4GB RAM options coupled with 64GB onboard storage. The device draws its power from a 5,000mAh battery with support for 10W Software-wise, the smartphone runs on HiOS 12 based on Android 12 out of the box.

Motorola launched the Moto X40 in China in December. The device is one of the first to feature the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

It is expected to release as Motorola Edge 40 Pro in global markets. Now, a certification suggests that the phone will be also sold under yet another name.

According to Bluetooth SIG, the Moto X40 will also go by Motorola Edge+ 2023. The handset will be likely sold under this name in the US as its predecessor Moto X30 is known as Motorola Edge+ in the region.

The listing also confirms that the phone will be called Motorola Edge 40 Pro, which we already know. In a nutshell, the Moto X40 will use Edge 40 Pro branding in the rest of the world and Edge Plus 2023 in the US.

Smartphones Accounted for 27% of SMIC’s Wafer Revenue, Despite US-China Tech War

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) the largest chipmaker in China recently released its unaudited financial report for the fourth quarter of 2022.

As per the report, SMIC revenue for 2022 crossed $7.2 billion, which is a 34% increase YoY. The gross margin increased to a record high of 38%. The company has reported an annual growth rate of more than 30% for two consecutive years, 2021 and 2022. The company said that mobile phone wafers accounted for 27% of its total wafer revenue and by the end of 2022, it was able to increase its monthly capacity for 8-inch wafers to 714 thousand units and an annual capacity utilization rate of 92%.

Despite the crushing sanctions by the US on China’s semiconductor industry and a downward economy, the company was able to create record sales in 2022. However, the management has predicted a bleak future as the semiconductor industry cycle is still at the bottom and there are too many complex external factors including the ongoing US-China tech war that can adversely affect the semiconductor industry.

For the first quarter of 2023, the company is expecting a steady decline of 10% to 12% in revenue. The gross margin projection stands at 19% to 21% which is almost 19% lower than the previous year. Annual revenue for 2023 is expected to decline by a low-teens percentage year-over-year, and the gross margin is expected to be around 20%.

What is the Future of SMIC?

SMIC and its subsidiaries are one of the leading semiconductor foundries in the world and are the front-runners in manufacturing capability, scale, and comprehensive services in China. The company provides semiconductor foundry and technology services to global customers on 0.35 micron to FinFET process node technologies.

SMIC is currently in the expansion phase and is making continuous high investments to increase its production capacity. The company’s capital expenditure stood at $6.35 billion in 2022. By the end of the year, the company had started production in its Shenzhen plant and had entered into a pilot production phase in the the Jingcheng factory. SMIC has already completed the construction of the main fab shell at the Liangang plant and has started the construction work for the new factory at Xiqing.

US-China Tech War: Its effects on SMIC

The mass production at SMIC Jingcheng is postponed by a couple of quarters due to a delay in getting bottleneck equipment. Though the company has not stated the reason for the delay, experts speculate that the ongoing US sanctions have made it difficult for the company to acquire important semiconductor manufacturing machines.

In 2020, the US added SMIC and other Chinese semiconductor companies to its Entity List, which is basically a US trade blacklist. From 2020 to date, Washington is trying to desperately stop China’s advancement in the semiconductor industry as it fears that the Asian tech giant would become a global leader in fields like Artificial Intelligence, military, and quantum computing. The Biden administration, not only stopped US companies from exporting technology, equipment, personnel, and ancillary services to China’s semiconductor companies, but also roped in allies like Japan and Netherlands to boycott the Chinese chipmakers.

China is the world’s largest semiconductor market and accounts for almost one-third of global sales. The semiconductor industry plays a vital role in the country’s technology sector and accounts for almost 30% of the GDP. However, the country is not self-sufficient in this field, as it is heavily dependent on foreign nations for advanced technology and equipment.

Though SMIC competes with global leaders like TSMC Taiwan and Samsung of South Korea, it is still generations behind when it comes to technology. SMIC is now working on research and development and expansion of its factories to overtake its competitors. The company has invested $197.5 million in just the fourth quarter of 2022 in research and has reported a 14.7 % YoY increase in R&D expenditure.

Infinix INBook Y1 Plus With Intel Core SoC, 15.6-Inch Display To Launch In India Soon Under Rs 30,000

Infinix is set to launch a new laptop in India soon. The upcoming offering is called the Infinix INBook Y1 Plus. It is confirmed to be available on Flipkart. The e-commerce platform has also put up a microsite of the laptop only on its mobile app. The listing reveals some key specifications of the device. However, the launch date of the INBook Y1 Plus remains unknown at the moment.

The Infinix INBook Y1 Plus will come in Silver, Blue, and Grey colour options. As per the Flipkart microsite, it will feature a 15.6-inch display bearing an FHD+ resolution. It will offer ultra-narrow bezels, 250 nits brightness, and an 86 percent sRGB colour gamut. On the audio front, the laptop will be equipped with dual stereo speakers producing 2W sound output. The machine is confirmed to be powered by a 50Whr battery unit that is claimed to offer 10 hours of video playback. The upcoming offering will support 45W charging via a Type-C port that is said to refuel 75 percent in an hour.

The rest of the hardware specifications of the Infinix INBook Y1 Plus remain a mystery. The Flipkart microsite revealed that it will be powered by an Intel Core processor and will launch later this month under Rs 30,000 segment.

Additionally, apart from the INBook Y1 Plus laptop, Infinix is also set to launch the Smart 7 smartphone soon. It is confirmed to come with 500 nits brightness, 4GB RAM along with 3GB virtual RAM and 64GB storage, and a 6,000mAh battery with support for a USB-C port. The smartphone is teased to be priced under Rs 7,500.
