Design

There cannot be any more interesting device than iPhone, at least according to the trends. With the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple got rid of the notch for the first time, and replaced it with the Dynamic Island: basically, a pill shaped punch hole placed at the center of the upper part of the screen. It not only contains the hardware sensors for the front camera and the 3D facial recognition, but it can also act as a sort of secondary screen to display basic information. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a glass back and a stainless steel frame, and it is protected by IP68 certification making it waterproof (up to 6 meters of depth) and dustproof. It offers better water resistance if compared to the IP68 certification of Vivo X90 Pro Plus which can go underwater just up to 1.5 meters deep without damage. However, the Vivo is still a beautiful device, it comes in a leather variant and impressive colors, as well as a curved screen with very narrow bezels.

Display

On the paper, the Vivo X90 Pro Plus has a more impressive display. It is an AMOLED display showing up to one billion colors with a diagonal of 6.78 inches, a Quad HD+ resolution of 1440 x 3200 pixels, a 120 Hz refresh (it is adaptive from 1 to 120 Hz thanks to the LTPO 4 technology), Dolby Vision support, HDR10+ certification, and an in-display fingerprint reader, as well as a peak brightness of 1,800 nits. However, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is at the same level thanks to its outstanding color reproduction. The iPhone has a Super Retina XDR OLED display with a diagonal of 6.7 inches, a resolution of 1290 x 2796 pixels, a 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10 certification, Dolby Vision support, and a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. It does not rely on a fingerprint reader for authentication, but it has the safer Face ID technology for 3D facial recognition.

Specs & Software

The iPhone 14 Pro Max and the Vivo X90 Pro Plus are equipped with the best hardware departments you can expect from a phone in the actual market. But the iPhone 14 Pro Max provides better performance thanks to the better optimization offered by the iOS operating system. With the iPhone, you get an hexa-core Apple A16 Bionic chipset running at a max frequency of 3.46 GHz, alongside 6 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of native storage. The Vivo X90 Pro Plus is powered by the octa-core Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform running at a max frequency of 3.2 GHz and paired with 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of native storage. It runs Android 13 out of the box, customized by either Origin OS or Funtouch OS depending on the region.

Camera

The camera setup of the Vivo X90 Pro Plus is a lot better than the one found on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. It includes a 50.3 MP main camera with laser autofocus and OIS, a 64 MP periscope sensor with 3.5x optical zoom, a 50 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom for portraits, and a 48 MP ultrawide camera, all with OIS. With the iPhone, you get a 48 + 12 + 12 MP triple camera.

Battery

The battery of the Vivo is bigger, but the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a longer battery life thanks to the iOS optimization. On the other hand, the X90 Pro+ charges quicker thanks to 80W fast charging and 50W wireless charging.

Price

You need at least $950/€900 in order to purchase the Vivo X90 Pro Plus in China, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts from $1,100/€1,043. Which one would you pick?

Huawei Tops China’s Wearable Wristband Market in Q3 2022; Xiaomi in Second Place

Market research firm Canalys recently released its research data containing the quarterly report of the wearable wristband market in China for the third quarter of the current year. The report shows that embattled Chinese tech giant Huawei continues to dominate the domestic market despite losing ground overseas. The tech giant controlled a market share of 24% to lead the pack. However, Huawei’s market share is shown to represent a 27% drop in its YoY performance.

Xiaomi has been a strong player in the smart wearable market since the launch of the extremely popular Mi Band models, especially the revolutionary Band 2. Xiaomi trailed Huawei closely with a 22% share of the market which is a positive 6% growth YoY.

In third place is a new entrant known as XTC which cornered a 10% share of the market while US tech giant and global wearable market leader Apple came in at fourth place with a 9% share of the market. Interestingly, Apple’s market share represents a massive 53% surge in its sales compared to last year. This huge growth may be due to the release of new products this quarter.

Finally, OPPO completes the top 5 ranking with a 4% market share, representing a 12% annual growth.

Canalys also released a ranking of the global wearable wristband market showing that a total of 49 million smart wearables were shipped globally in Q3 2022. This represents a year-on-year increase of 3.4%. The report showed a consistent pattern of growth of smartwatches and a decline in smart band sales.

Apple leads the global wearable market with a 20% market share followed by Samsung, Xiaomi, Indian manufacturer Noise, and Huawei. It is impressive to see Huawei make the cut in the global market considering the US government’s sanctions against the company.

Samsung Partners With Zigbang To Unveil a Unique UWB-based Smart Door Lock

Korean tech giant and global market leader Samsung has teamed up with Zigbang to unveil a smart door lock with an Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) chip. The Zigbang SHP-R80 UWB Digital Key Door Lock is the world’s first UWB-based smart door lock which can be unlocked without touching the connected smartphone. The smart door lock is the culmination of a collaboration between Samsung and Zigbang.

Samsung Zigbang SHP-R80 UWB Digital Key Door Lock

The smart door lock senses a digital home key in your Samsung wallet on your phone, so you don’t need to tap your phone against the lock or open an app. Ultra Wide Band technology uses radio waves like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for short-distance communications. However, a high-frequency band ensures that precise distance measurements and correct sensing of the direction of the signal are achieved. The UWB technology also provides better protection from hacking due to its short range. The UWB functionality is enabled through a digital home key added to your Samsung Wallet on your smartphone.

Thanks to the Zigbang app, the smart lock with UWB can notify members of your household of the identity of the person unlocking the door. If you lost your phone, you can disable the digital home key using the Find My Mobile tool. If this is not done, then an intruder could use the digital home key to enter your house.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 and Galaxy S22 Ultra Plus support UWB functionality and will be compatible with the smart door lock. Both smartphones can use Samsung Pay to unlock the Zigbang smart lock. The Zigbang SHP-R80 UWB Digital Key Door Lock will debut in South Korea although its price is not known yet. The Zigbang smart door lock could also subsequently ship to other markets.

According to the most recent information, Samsung is no longer interested in purchasing the OLED panels provided by the BOE. According to reports, the agreement made between the two businesses will be cancelled beginning in 2023.

According to a list TheElec acquired, Samsung has taken BOE off its official supplier list, meaning the corporation won’t be purchasing any goods from the Chinese manufacturer. This is a result of recent BOE problems with royalty payments. According to reports, the South Korean company asked BOE to pay royalties for utilising Samsung’s name in its marketing, but BOE refused. Samsung has since stopped purchasing as many display panels from BOE.

Samsung

The panels supplied by the BOE were used by Samsung in their smartphones and other products. Now, the official list of suppliers posted by the brand has revealed that BOE is no more the part of suppliers for display. Just because of the changes in the deal between BOE and Samsung, the brand will now opt for purchasing the displays from CSOT and LG display. We are awaiting more official information regarding this move by Samsung.

Due to the geopolitical instability surrounding China, many businesses, including Apple and Samsung, are lowering their reliance on Chinese suppliers. According to recent reports, Apple no longer purchases NAND chips from the Chinese government-funded company YMTC. Instead, the business will purchase NAND chips from SK Hynix and Samsung. Another example is the most recent contract between Samsung and BOE.

PC Shipments Drops in the US Markets During the Third Quarter; Claims Canalys Report

Canalys has published its report for the PC shipment in the US market during Q3 of 2022. The report claims that the PC shipments in the market fell sharply by 12.1% in the third quarter over year-on-year growth. The report further reveals that laptops, in particular, have been around a 12% decline in the market and the desktop market, on the other hand, has seen a small 1% rise in the number of shipments. Dell, HP, Apple, Lenovo and Acer were among the top manufacturers.

Surprisingly, only Apple and Acer have witnessed some shipment growth. The remaining brands on the list have all seen a significant drop in their market share. More conservative business expenditures, along with weaker demand from the consumer and education sectors, were the main causes of the significant decline in laptop shipment volume. Although the consumer and education sectors are two of the product’s biggest clients, their demand in the third quarter was not actually sufficient.

Even though the third quarter was extremely difficult for PC suppliers, the fourth quarter’s prospects aren’t any better. The American holiday season should boost sales a little, but generally, Canalys predicts that the market will continue to decline. People are reducing back on their purchases of technology devices as a result of rising prices. The claims seem to be a little disappointing for the manufacturers present in the US markets.

PC shipments

According to the analyst, things will start to improve in 2023. It predicts that demand from the educational sector will begin to slowly increase in the following year, with the bulk of equipment upgrades taking place in 2024. There’s a long way to go until that. From a macroeconomic standpoint, the Federal Reserve is continuing to raise interest rates, which could result in additional job losses and increase loan costs, further reducing disposable income. The length of the recovery period will determine when consumer demand for PCs will start to increase.

According to Brian Lynch, a Canalys Research Analyst, “the U.S. PC market was already in a protracted phase of recession as both consumer and educational demand suffered with inflation and saturation.” The business sector, which was once robust, has now started to dwindle and posted its first year-over-year loss in 2022.
