Honor just took part in the IFA 2022 and announced its new Dual Flagship strategy including the launch of new traditional phones and new foldable phones in the old continent. Besides the new Honor 70, the brand announced the new Honor Pad 8 for the European market. A few days before, OPPO launched its first tablet in the old continent: the OPPO Pad Air. These two devices belong to the same range and they pack similar specifications. But which one is the best? There is no better way to understand it than an article like this. This is a comparison between the main specifications of the OPPO Pad Air and the Honor Pad 8 which will highlight the main differences between these two great tablets for the affordable segment.
The design of the OPPO Pad Air is definitely more curated. It has a rear side made of two pieces with a very refined texture including the metal. It is more compact than the Honor Pad 8 and it is even lighter, but there is not much difference between the batteries of these two devices. The OPPO Pad Air is the winner of the design comparison. It has a very high screen to body ratio with the display taking more than 80 percent of the front panel. It is just 6.9 mm thin and it sports a single camera on the rear side. Unfortunately, there is no fingerprint reader, but this makes the design cleaner. Its overall dimensions are 245.1 x 154.8 x 6.9 mm and it weighs 440 grams. The Honor Pad 8 has a full aluminum unibody design and a very high screen to body ratio, but it is less impressive than its rival in terms of design, and it is even bigger and heavier.
Display
The displays of these two tablets are more or less at the same level in terms of image quality. They are IPS LCD panels able to show up to one billion colors with a Full HD+ resolution of 1200 x 2000 pixels. We are not talking about high-end displays as they are not even OLED panels, but they still have a great color reproduction and they are pretty good panels if we consider that these devices are tablets. In this price range, it is not easy to find better displays. But what really differs between these two panels is the size: the Honor Pad 8 has a bigger 12-inch panel, while the OPPO Pad Air stops at just 10.36 inches. This makes the Honor better for productivity, studying, and advanced users. Further, the Honor Pad 8 should provide a superior audio experience because it is equipped with eight speakers instead of just four speakers like the OPPO tablet.
Specs & Software
The OPPO Pad Air and the Honor Pad 8 are fueled by the same mobile platform: the Snapdragon 680 chipset by Qualcomm built with a 6 nm production process. It is a midrange SoC with an octa-core architecture composed of four Kryo 265 Gold custom cores running at a max frequency of 2.4 GHz, four Kryo 265 Silver custom cores running at 1.9 GHz, and an Adreno 610 GPU. It is a sufficient processor for every usage and it is paired with up to 6 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. In terms of performance, it is essentially a draw. There is just one important difference: the internal storage of the OPPO tablet is expandable with a micro SD, while the Honor Pad 8 does not seem to have a micro SD slot. Last but not least, the OPPO Pad Air seems to have better software: we are talking about the ColorOS for Pad based on Android 12: a version of the ColorOS user interface designed specifically for tablets.
Camera
Again, if you are looking for a better camera, you should opt for the OPPO Pad Air. On the rear side, it sports a great 8 MP shooter with an f/2.0 focal aperture: definitely better than the disappointing 5 MP shooter of the Honor Pad 8. The front cameras are more or less at the same level, with 5 MP resolutions. These are not great tablets to shoot photos, but they are sufficient for emergency shots.
The Honor Pad 8 is a bigger tablet and it also comes with a bigger battery, but the difference between the battery capacities is just marginal: 7250 mAh against 7100 mAh. However, this should be enough to let the Honor tablet last more on a single charge. Further, the Honor Pad 8 is the only one to support reverse charging and it charges quicker thanks to a faster 22.5W charging technology.
Price
The starting price of the OPPO Pad Air for the European market is €300/$300 for the base variant with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of native storage, while you need €330/$330 to purchase the base variant of the Honor Pad 8 packing the same memory configuration. I personally prefer the OPPO because of its micro SD slot, better design, more compact dimensions, great software, and better camera, but the Honor Pad 8 has a bigger battery and a bigger display. Which one would you pick?
Apple will hold its big traditional event on September 7 at the Steve Jobs Theater on its Apple Park Campus, and that’s when we expect the Apple iPhone 14 and a bunch of other devices to launch. The standard iPhone 14 could remain nearly identical to the iPhone 13. Even so, we expect some improvements over the current models.
As we wait for official confirmation and more details on the iPhone 14, here’s a quick roundup of everything we know so far.
iPhone 14 Design
Reports indicate that Apple will be widening the gap between Pro and standard models with the upcoming iPhone 14 series. The company may reserve the new processor, design, and cameras for the pro lineup.
iPhone 14 Series prototypes
The standard iPhone 14 is expected to look very similar to its predecessor, with the same notch and similar camera bump. However, the iPhone 14 Pro models are rumored to get a new look this year. They’re said to lose the unsightly notch for a pair of pill+hole cutouts.
A new leak suggests the Pro models could also feature a single capsule-shaped hole instead of two cutouts. Moreover, the gap between the selfie camera and Face ID module will reportedly be used as a privacy indicator for the cameras and microphone.
iPhone 14 lineup display panels
Getting back to the iPhone 14, it is expected to carry a shorter and thinner notch than the iPhone 13. On the back, the handset will have two rear cameras aligned diagonally. It will likely have flat edges and an aluminum frame.
iPhone 14 Specs & Features
iPhone 14 will have the same 6.1-inch display as the previous year’s iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max. It could feature an OLED panel, along with True Tone, Haptic Touch, and HDR support. It is also reported that the standard iPhone 14 model will come with Apple’s ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate, however, it may not be adaptive.
If we talk about the processor, iPhone 14 will retain the last year’s A15 chip. This is definitely disappointing since a new chipset is one of the biggest upgrades Apple brings with each new model. However, the Pro models are expected to be powered by a new A16 Bionic chip.
The chipset will likely be paired with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of storage. Even though the iPhone 14 will be powered by a year-old chip, it will still be more powerful than most phones on the market.
If we talk about the battery, the iPhone 14 is expected to receive a slight improvement in terms of battery size. We can expect the handset to offer at least 19 hours of battery on a single charge. It will likely carry the same 20W charging support.
iPhone 14 Cameras
Various leaks and rumors suggest iPhone 14 will not be getting any major camera upgrades. It will likely retain the same dual rear camera setup that was seen on the iPhone 13 models. Moreover, the handset may get the same 12-megapixel sensors.
However, Apple may improve the camera and processing of the device with the help of some changes in the software. It may receive some camera improvements with the IOS 16 as well.
Representative image
While on the front, the device is reported to receive upgraded cameras for better selfies and video calls. All in all, the camera department of the iPhone 14 will be almost similar to the last year’s model.
However, the iPhone 14 Pro models will be receiving some serious camera improvements this year. Apple is reportedly working on a 48-megapixel camera that can capture more detailed and high-quality photos with better control of light.
iPhone 14 Expected Price
There have been rumors that the iPhone 14 Pro models will see around a $100 increase in price. However, it’s unknown if the standard models will see a price hike or not. iPhone 13 was launched at a price of $799 and rumors suggest the iPhone 14 will bear the same price tag.
The 256GB variant of the smartphone may go up to $899. The price seems fair since the device is not carrying any significant upgrades over its predecessor.
After almost 2 years since the reveal of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro back in November 2020, Huawei is due to finally lift the curtains of its next-generation of Huawei Mate 50 series of flagship smartphones next week September 6th 2022 (Tuesday) on a physical launch event in China.
Source: Huawei China
Huawei had not shared much about the design or specific highlighting features of the upcoming Huawei Mate 50 series of smartphones in its official teasers this year. However, leaks and rumours have given us a general idea of what to expect from the Huawei Mate 50 flagships in 2022.
In this roundup article, we will share the number of members in the Huawei Mate 50 family, the features, and the specifications that are expected to be launched on these devices.
Huawei Mate 50 Series Feature Highlights
The Huawei Mate 50 family will consist of 4 devices: the standard Huawei Mate 50, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro, the Huawei Mate 50E, and the Huawei Mate 50 RS.
Huawei Mate 50 Concept
In its official teasers this week, Huawei has revealed that the Huawei Mate 50 series will feature industry-breaking smartphone battery life never before seen in the industry before, boldly claiming that you can even use your phone to make calls when the battery is dead. Rumours also point to the Huawei Mate 50 series featuring satellite communication technology that allows for cellular calls and messages in very remote areas where there is no cellular 3G, 4G or 5G coverage.
As for the cameras, after the end of the partnership with German camera maker brand Leica, the Huawei Mate 50 flagships will now instead feature a camera setup co-engineered with XMAGE, the newly launched camera brand that wants to integrate its camera expertise into smartphone photography. In addition, Huawei has officially teased as well that physically variable apertures are coming to the Huawei Mate 50 family as well, providing better colour reproduction in both daylight and nighttime shots.
Under the hood, all 4 devices will feature 4G-only Qualcomm Snapdragon smartphone SoCs running the show, due to the US sanctions prohibiting Huawei from utilising 5G SoCs from Qualcomm. And the Huawei Mate 50 series of smartphones are the first Huawei smartphones to launch with HarmonyOS 3.0 out of the box.
Huawei Mate 50 Specifications
The cheapest among the family is the Huawei Mate 50E, which is equipped with Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 778G SoC that has only support for 4G network connectivity. The design of the Huawei Mate 50E is expected to be a glass and aluminium chassis, with flat aluminium sides and glass on the front and back.
The device will sport a flat 1.5K AMOLED screen that has a resolution of 2800*1225, a punch hole located in the centre top of the display along with support for a 90Hz refresh rate. The rear camera setup will be a standard triple camera setup consisting of a standard wide-angle main, ultra wide-angle and telephoto lens.
The Huawei Mate 50E is said to support wireless charging + 66W fast wired charging, and a 4400mAh battery.
Meanwhile, the standard Huawei Mate 50, Huawei Mate 50 Pro and Huawei Mate 50 RS (Porsche Edition) will feature the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC found in other competing Android flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Realme GT 2 Pro, Vivo X80 Pro and the OnePlus 10 Pro. However, one big difference is that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the Huawei Mate 50 smartphones are not 5G-capable, meaning that they only support 4G connectivity or older. And all models are said to have support for wireless charging and up to 66W fast wired charging.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
But some rumours do point to the standard Huawei Mate 50 featuring last year’s Snapdragon 888 4G instead, which could be true considering the latter’s better power efficiency.
The Huawei Mate 50 is said to feature a curved 1.5K 90Hz AMOLED display with a punch-hole cutout in the centre, whilst the more premium Huawei Mate 50 Pro and Mate 50 RS will feature a curved 1.5K 120Hz AMOLED and could see the return of the notch. The notch is said to make way for Huawei’s next-generation of face recognition technology that allows users to quickly and securely access their smartphone with contactless biometric authentication.
As for the cameras, all of the higher-end Huawei Mate 50 flagships are rumoured to feature the flagship Sony IMX766 sensor with an aperture of f/1.5 and a max resolution of 50 MP. The highest-end camera setup on the Huawei Mate 50 series also points to a Sony IMX688 ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 5 times periscope OV64B telephoto zoom lens for versatility.
For more details such as the design, pricing and colour options of the Huawei Mate 50 series, stay tuned to our coverage of the Huawei Mate 50 series launch event next Tuesday, September 6th!

OPPO might soon bring a new A series smartphone, dubbed the OPPO A17, to the global as well as Indian market. The device was recently spotted on GCF and BIS India databases. Now it has made an appearance on the US FCC website, hinting at an imminent launch. OPPO A17 is expected to be the successor to the OPPO A16, which was launched back in September 2021 with a 6.52-inch HD+ display, Helio G35, and a 5,000mAh battery.

The device is also confirmed to run Android 12 out of the box. It will likely have ColorOS 12 skin on the top. The listing suggests the OPPO A17 will support 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz WiFi.
OPPO A16
Details about the OPPO A17 are still pretty short. More information regarding its specifications and features will likely emerge soon. Meanwhile, let’s check out the specs of the OPPO A16 to get a better idea of what to expect from its successor.
OPPO A16 Specifications
OPPO A16 features a 6.52 inches LCD panel that offers an HD+ resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, it is powered by the MediaTek Helio G35 processor paired with 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 64G of built-in storage. It also has a dedicated microSD card slot.
As far as the cameras are concerned, the device has a triple rear camera setup on the back consisting of a 13-megapixel main camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth assist sensor. It has a 16-megapixel shooter on the front for selfies and video calls. It is backed by a 5,000mAh battery, which supports 10W charging.
Recently Honor 70 made its international debut, and we were pretty lucky to quickly get our hands on the global model. Since we reviewed the Magic 4 Pro, a pretty decent premium model, we were looking forward to the Honor 70, marketed as an upper mid-range device. So we reviewed the phone in the first instance.
The phone we have is the Mirrored-black color model, which best emphasizes the premium feel of this phone. And to be honest, the black model doesn’t look like one of those mid-range models with compromised built quality. It inherits some of the classic design features of the high-end Honor series, such as the curved screen, the more palm-fitting frame design, and the very integrated feel from the front to the back.
Another pleasant surprise is that it is lightweight. It doesn’t have a large camera module like the Magic 4 Pro, which in turn allows the phone to keep its weight down to 181g. However, this doesn’t mean that we didn’t have fun with its cameras. On the contrary, its camera performance still could be the reason you buy this phone.
The dual-circle design of the camera setup is reserved on the new Honor 70. What’s slightly different from its predecessor is that the circles are not joined on an elevated island. But it doesn’t change the fact the camera module has a significant bump. I didn’t particularly like the design, but it did stick with me right away.
And the glossy glass cover easily collects fingerprints. But the good news is that it can hide these fingerprints from your view at certain angles. So, it won’t be as annoying as the other glossy models.
Unlike the curved bezels on both sides, the top and bottom are flat. There’s only a microphone on the top. And the bottom sim-card slot is available to load dual sim cards with a 5G network. There’s only one speaker at the bottom and no headphone jack available. And we couldn’t find an official description of its waterproofness, so maybe it’s better to keep it away from water. For a promised IP rating, you can check out the Magic 4 Pro, which supports IP68 waterproof rating.

120Hz Oled display
The front face is covered with a 6.67-inch 120Hz edge-curved OLED display. The FHD+ display looks great with wonderful colors and has a smooth visual experience with fast response. We can hardly even tell the difference between it and some premium models through the naked eye, but it’s still not a screen supplied by Samsung. It’s quite surprising that other suppliers have caught up with the Samsung display, no matter its panel colors or functions.
From the app DRM Info, we learned that the phone is compatible with Widevine L1 level, so there’s no problem watching HDR content on platforms like Netflix. In addition, the display also supports 1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, which is probably the best eye-protection solution available for OLED screens.
Performance & Gaming
The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 788G+ chipset. The chipset has pretty good power efficiency and good heating control due to TSMC’s 6nm processing, though its peak performance doesn’t compare to the Snapdragon 870 chip. From the benchmark results, we can see that Honor’s tuning of the chip is not bad, and there’s roughly a 10-22% performance gap between them.
The main difference comes from their graphic computing, but according to the gaming results we got here, the gap is not that significant. Whether in PUBG Mobile or Genshin impact, the Honor 70 could release the full potential of the chip.
For PUBG Mobile, the gaming experience is almost the same as what we had on most flagship models, while For accessing the smoothest gaming experience in heavy games like GenShin Impact, We would not suggest playing under the highest graphics.
But a surprise is that the Honor 70 has the best heat control among all the phones we tested. Even when running the Extreme test in 3Dmark, it maintains excellent performance stability with no throttling.
Software & GMS
As for software, Honor’s global model has all the Google services ready for global users. And they’re over 40 system languages supported on the phone. Plus the 120Hz display performs very close to Huawei phones in terms of system stability and smoothness. There’s no notification-missing issue that we had on Vivo models. And it also has good management of multiple apps running in the background, and I barely experienced the issues of apps being forcibly shut down.
So it performs very close to Huawei software in terms of system stability and smoothness. And coupled with the free Google services and apps, I think the global version of Honor’s Magic UI is almost the best Android-based software I have ever experienced.
CAMERAS
The Honor 70 is equipped with 3 rear cameras and a 32MP selfie camera. The triple setup includes a 54MP main camera, a 50MP wide-angle lens, and another depth sensor.
IMX800 Sensor
The main camera is driven by the debut IMX800 sensor, which has a fairly large size featuring 54MP resolution even when compared with those special camera phones.
Combined with the Honor Image Engine, the great camera hardware offers decent light capture and is able to reproduce rich details with good purity, especially for the shadow part. But sometimes when shooting high-contrast scenarios, the dark areas of the images might be too bright to give a proper contrast, but the good news is that it always has good exposure for the overall image without losing details.

The wide-angle lens is not as aggressive as the main camera’s overexposure, and it also reserved pretty decent detail with its 50MP sensor.
However, like the other wide-angle lenses, it sometimes also suffers from fringing issues.

For night shooting, the large sensor gives great power to the main camera. Even in extreme low light conditions, it could reproduce rich dark details and significantly improve the overall brightness. Although the wide-angle lens is less stable than the main lens, there are still great optimizations that the image engine brought to the wide-angle samples. But due to the lack of OIS, if using the night mode, there’s still a risk of getting blurred images caused by hand-shaking.

Solo Cut Mode
And there’s a creative feature for video shooting, which is called the Solo Cut. It enables real-time focus-tracking for selected portraits and creates dual clips at the same time: one is about the whole picture you shoot, and the other one is the solo clip that is generated by the figure-tracking mode.
As we mentioned, there’s a single loudspeaker available on the Honor 70, but it doesn’t sound as bad as I thought.
Battery & charging
The lightweight phone amazingly features a 4800mAh large battery with 66W fast charging, which took us 45mins to finish the charging test. And supported by the large battery, it’s pretty easy for the phone to last for the whole-day use.
Conclusion
It’s good to see the midrange model inherited some of the great features of the flagship Magic 4 Pro. The complete software experience and the premium design would easily make it stand out in its price segment. What’s even more surprising is that it dares to use a flagship-level camera sensor here and another 50MP wide-angle camera. That said, it’s definitely not perfect as it has quite obvious drawbacks, such as the single speaker used here and the less powerful chipset.
