Vello Titanium e-bike has “unlimited range” & is touted as the world’s lightest

The upsurge in demand and use of electric bikes coincided with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The upswing has, however, continued with a greater focus on urban mobility in a compact and less intrusive manner. The Vello Titanium is the latest e-bike offering from the Austrian company and it is touted as the lightest e-bike yet. It also comes with an unlimited theoretical range.Vello Titanium e-bike

The Vello Bike+ Titanium was showcased during the 2022 London Cycle Show and sports a simple design that masks its potential. It weighs just 9.9kg, while the non-electric version comes at a super-lightweight of 6.6kg. The e-bike is foldable and its Titanium frame weighs about 2kg.

Vello, formed in 2013, says its e-bikes combine micro mobility with connectivity. The manufacturer aims to revolutionize the bicycle industry by offering its customers an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil-based transportation. Their smart e-bikes and pedal-powered bicycles come with a patented folding frame and a battery-integrated hub motor.Vello Titanium e-bike

The foldable Bike+ Titanium seems to have tipped the scales in terms of its super-lightweight design. It can be easily folded and carried upstairs without hassles. Vello says you can fold the bike in under 8 seconds, which is also impressive. With this revolutionary bike, strutting into your e-bike after hopping off public transport can be very fast. The bike has a great form factor due to the integrated hub motor. The bike uses the KERS technology to charge the battery when traveling downhill or braking. This implies that you may not need to charge the battery from mains electricity due to its self-charging capacity. A full charge yields a range of 50km on the Bike+ Titanium.Vello Titanium e-bike

The e-bike can reach a top speed of 25km/h and also navigate through inclines of up to 17%. The slope sensors adjust cadence for optimal performance. An optional Schlumpf Drive gear system with Speed and Mountain Drive settings is also available. The bike has app connectivity support to get information and GPS on the go. It also has an electronic lock, anti-theft technology, and external remote control.

The Vello Titanium e-bike carries a hefty price tag of €4,490 ($4,597) in Europe and comes with several accessories.

Google Chrome will support handwriting-to-text using a stylus on Android 13

Google is expected to debut its first tablet in the coming months. The tablet, that Google showcased at its I/O conference earlier this year is expected to arrive with Android 13 on board. And for that, the company is working on new features to smooth out the Android tablet experience.

Google Pixel Tablet

Android being open source means that these features will also appear in tablets from other brands. Technical editor for Esper Mishaal Rahman has been following a few threads in the Chromium Gerrit that a Samsung engineer started and that seek to implement stylus handwriting-to-text input on Android T, or Android 13, at least on editable, non-password text fields in Chrome and WebViews that are based on Chrome.

It seems that Android 13-powered Samsung devices with an S Pen may already make use of the capability. These devices utilize an internal DirectWriting API, and a commit that makes it possible to input handwriting as text using this API has been merged into Chromium. Samsung is still working on integrating S Pen gestures into the handwriting-to-text mode via the Chromium Gerrit.

The Stylus Writing APIs in Android 13 will be used by the majority of Android devices. Currently, the developer option toggle must be set, and the overarching input method must support the APIs. More information on this feature will likely be revealed through future updates to Gboard and other keyboard apps.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra barely survives JerryRigEverything’s durability tests

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra has gone through the rigors of JerryRigEverything’s durability tests as posted on its YouTube channel. The tests covered the new camera hump of the device which houses its 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor. Host Zach Nelson put the device through the paces with an average performance. Xiaomi 12S Ultra

The 12S Ultra is a successor to the Mi 11 Ultra with improvements across several aspects. While the suspicion before the test was that the new rear camera hump could be a weak link, actual durability tests proved otherwise. The 12S Ultra has a premium exterior design with silicone leather although its Harmon Kardon frame is plastic and prone to razor scratches. The display of the 12S Ultra has Gorilla glass Victus protection but was not tested via Mohs picks. The device did not get a perfect performance as the bending forces had some impact on it.

On the whole, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra remained fully functional all through the tests and passed the test. The Xiaomi flagship fared no worse in the JerryRigEverything bend tests than some of the premium Android smartphones.

Of note, however, is the popping noise and slight crack around the frame during the test. Users of the 12S Ultra are assured that their smartphones will last the course of daily use because it is sufficiently durable.

You can check out our review video of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra under the “Related” section below.

Google Pixel 6a fingerprint scanner suffers from a major security flaw

Google is set to unveil its only Pixel 6 series smartphone in India later this month. However, prior to its July 28 release, the Pixel 6a model is apparently suffering from a major security flaw.

The news arrives from known Indian tech YouTubers GeekyRanjit and Beebom who found the security issue in their videos. The security flaw was also confirmed separately by 91Mobiles as well. As of right now, it is unclear whether the bug is related to the software or hardware. But, the Pixel 6a can basically be unlocked with fingerprints that are not even registered in the device. To put things simply, the in display fingerprint scanner is not functioning as intended, which shows a major security flaw.

In one of these videos, we can see multiple different people being capable of unlocking the Pixel 6a. So if your device gets lost or stolen, any other person can gain access to the smartphone. This is a big issue especially for the Search Engine giant, who is selling a smartphone after a gap of two years. Furthermore, the handset isn’t exactly affordable, with its price tag of 43,999 INR (roughly 550 US Dollars).

Google fires software engineer that claimed that its AI chatbot is self aware

Last week, Google announced that it has just fired a senior software engineer after he began claiming that the company’s AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot was a sentient being (became self aware).

According to a Reuters report, the Search Engine giant had placed software engineer Blake Lemoine on leave last month after he had violated certain company policies. Furthermore, the brand also found that his claims on LaMDA chatbot being sentient was also “wholly unfounded.” A company spokesperson told Reuters that “It’s regrettable that despite lengthy engagement on this topic, Blake still chose to persistently violate clear employment and data security policies that include the need to safeguard product information.”

For those unaware, Google had announced last year that LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) could basically be trained on dialogue that will enable it to learn to talk about essentially anything. The company and many leading scientists have also come forward to dismiss Lemoine’s claims. The LaMDA is simply a complex algorithm designed to generate convincing human language. So unfortunately, it appears that the day that AI take over the world is still a little while away.

PCB designed by Woz that helped Apple secure its first major order up for auction

This week, a significant piece of computer history surfaced in an online auction. A prototype Apple Computer A, allegedly built by none other than Steve Wozniak and once held by Steve Jobs, is up for auction as Lot #5006 on RR Auctions.

If it doesn’t have a distinguished pedigree to interest bidders, there is photographic proof that this is the production prototype for the Apple 1 and that it helped Apple land its first “major” order, the sale of 50 pre-assembled Apple 1s to The Byte Shop in Mountain View, California. Currently, at $278,005, the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) that is up for auction is likely to fetch more than $500,000 at the end of the auction . Notably, the auction ends on August 19.

Apple PCB Steve Woz auction
(SOURCE: RR Auctions)

Steve Jobs didn’t take good care of the PCB when he had it in his possession. It is believed to have been neglected at the Apple Garage for several years after receiving the historic order before Jobs gave it to the present owner about 30 years ago.

The breaks and cracks in the PCB and the fact that some chips and capacitors are missing—likely because they were given to other projects in the garage or PCs in production—show that it was mistreated. In addition, images of the working prototype reveal that the top right corner of the arrangement is missing a number of big orange Sprague Atom capacitors. The CPU is also missing.

Apple PCB Steve Woz
(SOURCE: RR Auctions)

Since this is the Apple 1 prototype, it should have had a MOS 6502 CPU running at 1 MHz, a 40 x 24 character output, and 4 KB of RAM that could be expanded to 8 KB or 48 KB using expansion cards, and 456 KB of storage (tape). But as a prototype, this Apple Computer A was a little more adaptable because, according to the auction information, it could have operated with a socketed Motorola 6800 processor rather than a MOS 6502.

Between this prototype and the first 50 Apple 1 computers that were sold, there are a number of other differences. According to RR Auctions, Woz exclusively soldered this particular model using his distinctive “three-handed” method.

According to the auction advertisement, the first batch of Apple 1 computers only cost $40 or less to make; nevertheless, thanks to the assembly, software, and other value-added services, as well as profit, The Byte Shop was able to sell each one for $666.66. Notably, The Byte Shop was one of the world’s first computer shops and the first one on the globe to sell an Apple computer.

Would fixing it and getting it back in working order be wrong? It is not a very attractive PCB, and its condition is appalling. Nevertheless, it is believed that a collector or business is going to let it be in its current state of deterioration and behind glass for safekeeping. I mean, you have to keep a half-a-million dollar piece of modern history safe, no matter what days it has seen earlier.

It can be seen in the video that the universal card feature in the HarmonyOS 3 has a lot of customization and it supports the combining and stacking of cards. Moreover, it allows the small components of the same size to be combined at the same time, improving efficiency and personalization.

The video suggests that with HarmonyOS 3, users will be able to adjust the size of the desktop folder. This also means that the smart folders will support more sizes. Overall, the new update is expected to bring significant upgrades in terms of layout, security, and operations.

As mentioned, Huawei will launch the latest iteration of its operating system on July 27. The company is also expected to launch Huawei MatePad, MateBook, smart screen, printer, and more on the same date.

Earlier this month, the company started rolling the developer beta version of HarmonyOS 3 to devices including the P50 series, the Mate 40 series, and the MatePad Pro 12.6-inch 2021 model. The update log showed major improvements in interaction design, multi-device interconnection, performance, and user support.
