Notably, the acquisition is in line with our previous report regarding Geely having plans to buy stake into the smartphone maker.

Huang had joined the company back in 2004 and has been held various important positions related to the supply chain, overseas business, and others. Despite the acquisition by Xingji times, both parties have agreed to see this as a strategic investment and that Meizu will still operate as an independent brand. Thus, the top management was left untouched and remains stable, while Huang Zhang will also be a strategic consultant for the brands products.

Interestingly, Shen Ziyu the new chairman of Meizu, revealed that the brand will retain and independent team. He further added that the company is also planning on launching a new flagship smartphone next year. Although, no other finer details were shared regarding this matter.

Apple Japan hikes prices of devices by upto 20% due to global inflation and supply shortages

Apple holds 60% of the smartphone market in Japan. However, the brand had to revise the pricing of some of its models. As a result, iPhone models have become significantly more expensive in Japan over the past few days.

Apple M2 Chip Featured
Apple’s M2 chip

Apple Japan has revised the prices for all iPhone models as of Thursday. The depreciation of the Japanese Yen against the US Dollar, which has lost roughly 18% of its value to the dollar in the last three months, is the reason for some models becoming nearly 20% more expensive than before.

For instance, the price of the iPhone 13 Pro has increased from 122,800 yen ($904) for the 128GB storage capacity to 144,800 yen ($1,066). The price of the iPhone SE Gen 3 has increased from 57,800 yen ($425) to 62,800 yen ($462) in the interim. It is common for multinational corporations like Apple to modify prices in a particular market to match with the change in a currency’s strength versus other currencies as the world contends with inflation (and supply shortages) across nations.

Apple Store Tokyo

Apple’s price hike on iPhones comes just before the company is anticipated to unveil its new array of iPhones for the year, which is typically in September. Apple hasn’t changed the pricing of any other items from its Mac or iPad lineups; it has just raised the price of its iPhones so far.

Recently, Apple created a buzz in the global market by announcing the new M2 processor for its upcoming MacBook Air and a report also suggested that the upcoming AirPods Pro 2 will have a USB Type-C charging port.

World’s largest EV battery maker announces a new battery with 620+ miles of range and fast charging

The world’s biggest battery maker CATL has announced that it will start producing a new electric-car battery with 620+miles (1000+ kilometers). The EV battery will enter production in 2023 and has been officially named -The Qilin battery.

CATL factory
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd

The Qilin is deemed 50% more efficient than the battery that is currently used in the Tesla Model S. Against the 620+ miles range of The Qilin, Tesla’s longest-range electric car Tesla Model S only offers a range of 405 miles. In the United States, the longest-range electric car available is the 169,000$ Lucid Air. Lucid Air is a California-based startup and offers an EV that can travel 520 miles per charge.

The Qilin packs a lot of energy into a small space, according to CATL, the largest EV battery producer in the world and a Tesla supplier. This is possible because of breakthroughs in battery chemistry and packaging. According to CATL, the battery has a 255 watt-hour energy density per kilogram and it will be 13% more powerful than the configuration Tesla recently began utilizing for its Model Y SUVs, which is 4680 batteries.

Tesla
Tesla Model S comes with a 405 miles range

If a vehicle is equipped with adequate batteries, it can go great distances. And making sure that batteries don’t take up too much room or weigh too much is the difficult part.

Additionally, CATL also claimed that The Qilin can charge from 10% to 80% in 10 minutes, making it leagues apart from anything that the market has to offer. However, the real statistics will only be determined when the battery is rolled out in the market and the EVs using The Qilin are on the road.

There has been no official word as to which US electric carmakers will be interested in implementing The Qilin into the cars. Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that two Chinese manufacturers of electric cars, Hozon and Li Auto, have so far committed to using the Qilin pack in upcoming models.

Apple’s upcoming AirPods Pro 2 earbuds to reportedly come with a USB-C port

Apple has been working on the next-generation AirPods Pro for a couple of years now and reports indicate that the company is expected to launch the Apple AirPods Pro 2 in the third or fourth quarter of this year.

In the latest development, it is being claimed that the upcoming flagship wireless earbuds from the company will come with a USB Type-C for charging instead of the company’s proprietary Lightning port.

The new report also sheds light on some of the other upgrades that are expected to come with the new Apple AirPods Pro 2. It will reportedly be powered by the new System-in-Package (SIP) for the H1 chip with support for improved adaptive noise cancellation, EQ, Spatial Audio, and Audio Sharing.

The USB Type-C charging case for the earbuds will also come with support for fast charging but exact details are not yet known. There’s also a possibility of some new sensors making their way to the device, such as temperature monitoring and heart rate monitoring.

Earlier, there were reports as well as leaked images related to the second-generation AirPods Pro with a few changes to the design. Now, it is being claimed that the upcoming earbuds won’t come with the so-called stemless design.

The earbuds will come with the skin-detect sensor that was debuted with the recently launched Apple AirPods 3, which provides a more accurate way to discern if the earbuds are actually in a user’s ears or not. It works by detecting water content in the wearer’s skin.

It is also being claimed that the earbuds may support Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) and if that happens, then it would be the first TWS earphones from the Cupertino-based tech giant to support lossless audio.

Tecno has confirmed via a tweet that it would be launching the Spark 8P in India soon. The Tecno Spark 8P was first launched in October last year and it features an impressive specs lineup while retaining the affordable pricing Tecno phones are known for.

The company’s teaser detailed some of the device’s specs and shows undoubtedly that the device will be the same as the model launched last year. The series of teasers show the device will pack a 50MP main camera at the rear in a triple camera setup. The device will also come with 4GB RAM as well as 3GB of virtual RAM bumping the available RAM to 7GB.

For reference, the Tecno Spark 8P packs a 6.6-inch LCD screen with a Full HD+ resolution, an aspect ratio of 20:9, and support for a 90Hz refresh rate. The phone packs a punch-hole design with the opening housing an 8MP selfie camera. Tecno Spark 8P

Under the hood, the Spark 8P features a MediaTek Helio G70 chipset but the Indian variant will be powered by a Helio G85 chipset as per the teaser. The G85 is the same chip used on the Pova 2, the Spark 8 Pro, and a host of other phones that have received good reviews.

Finally, the 5000mAh battery has support for 10W charging on the global variant but India’s variant will come with a cool 18W fast charging support. Last year’s model runs on Android 11 out of the box but there is no word yet if this version will run on Android 12 from the go.

We expect the company to roll out the launch itinerary soon.
