Canada, the only member of the “Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network” that has not banned Huawei’s 5G equipment in their country, recently announced that it plans to ban Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp’s 5G tech from the country.
For those unaware, the Five Eyes is an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
According to a Reuters report, Canada’s Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said, “We intend to exclude Huawei and ZTE from our 5G networks.” He added, “Providers who already have this equipment installed will be required to cease its use and remove it under the plans we’re announcing today.”
According to the recently announced plans, companies will be required to remove their 5G gear by June 2024 and will not receive any reimbursements for the gear. On the other hand, companies using Huawei or ZTE’s 4G equipment have a window till the end of 2027 to remove it.
China has expressed opposition to this decision, with the country’s foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin, stating, “We will take all necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate interests of Chinese firms.” A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy has accused Canada of working with the United States to suppress Chinese companies.
Alykhan Velshi, vice president of corporate affairs for Huawei in Canada, said in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp that the company is still waiting to hear “what sort of national security threats they think Huawei poses”. He added that Huawei still has 1,500 employees in Canada, mostly in research and development, and sold products like mobile phones, and would continue to do so.
Huawei Canada has also released an official statement on the matter, stating the following.
Huawei Canada is disappointed by the Canadian government’s decision. This is an unfortunate political decision that has nothing to do with cyber security or any of the technologies in question.
Over the past 13 years, Huawei Canada has devoted itself to helping Canadian carriers build out their wireless networks and provide quality services for the Canadian people. Huawei equipment, including both hardware and software, has been routinely and closely scrutinized by the government and its security agencies according to stringent quality standards. There have been zero security incidents caused by Huawei equipment throughout this entire period. We are proud of our security record in Canada.
Banning Huawei’s equipment and services will lead to significant economic loss in Canada and drive up the cost of communications for Canadian consumers. Unfortunately, this decision is beyond our control as a business. However, we will do everything in our capacity to protect the legitimate rights and interests of our customers, partners, and ourselves. We thank all of our Canadian partners, customers, and consumers for their ongoing support, and look forward to contributing to future network rollout in Canada when conditions permit.
The ban was widely expected and was delayed due to diplomatic tensions between China and Canada after the arrest of Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou in Canada on a U.S warrant.
To recall, Canada first announced its plans to review Huawei equipment on the grounds of national security back in September 2018. Later that year, Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada leading to long-running diplomatic tensions between the two nations that ended with Meng Wanzhou’s release in September last year.

Xiaomi exec shared on the Chinese micro-blogging website Weibo that Redmi Note 11T Pro+ has achieved an A+ certification from DisplayMate. It is the first LCD phone to receive this authoritative screen certification.
Lu Weibing, Partner at Xiaomi Group, President of Xiaomi China and International, and General Manager of the Redmi brand took to Weibo to announce that Redmi Note 11T Pro Plus has passed DisplayMate A+ screen certification and it is in fact the first LCD smartphone to do so. Weibing also revealed that Redmi Note 11T Pro Plus has also broken 14 other display records.
For the unversed, DisplayMate tests and evaluates various types of displays to determine what makes a display good or bad. Getting an A+ rating from DisplayMate is considered a big deal in the smartphone industry.
According to Lu Weibing, the smartphone features a 6.6-inch customized LCD panel with a 144Hz refresh rate. It has a customized 20.5:9 screen ratio that offers immersive and crisp picture quality. The display panel of the smartphone also has full DC dimming meaning it can replace quick flashes on your display with constant illumination.
In addition to that, the display also offers eye protection with the help of an anti-blue light filter. The LCD on Note 11T Pro + is highly adjustable and comes with Ambient color temperature sensing along with Dolby Vision certification.
As per Weibing, the smartphone will take the LCD display to a new level and will “revive the LCD glory”. The upcoming device has been nicknamed “little performance King Kong” which shows that folks at Xiaomi are really confident about the smartphone.
Other notable features of the smartphone are Dimensity 8100 processor, 5000mAh battery, and 120W fast charging. YouTube has just added another new feature on its popular video streaming platform. This feature is arriving on both the mobile application as well as the web player and highlights the most replayed part of the video a user is watching.
Looking at this feature, one can observe a gray graph that will appear on top of the video bar itself. As per official notes, “If the graph is high, then that part of the video has been replayed often. You can use the graph to quickly find and watch those moments.” While this isn’t exactly a ground breaking revolutionary feature, it still is a quality of life change, which helps highlights the most interesting part in the video.
This can be especially useful when watching some long videos that have a length crossing 15 minutes in total. It even helps in cases where the video did not have dedicated timestamps as well. It basically let users find the most interesting section of the video at a single glance rather than having to scrub through the entire preview. Notably, the ‘Most Replayed’ was previously only an experimental feature that was exclusive to YouTube Premium users.
But now, it is available to the entire userbase and can be found on both a browser or the company’s official iOS and Android applications as well. YouTube also announced that the new feature arrives alongside a number of other changes that seeks to make longer videos easier to navigate.

The shipments of Apple iPhones have apparently risen by a notable amount in the first quarter of this year. This growth was observed in the company’s most important region, which is North America.
According to a Canalysreport, the Cupertino based giant’s shipments for iPhones were up by nearly 20 percent. In other words, the brand shipped a total of 20 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2022, compared to 17 million units during the same period last year. Furthermore, the company’s market share also hit a whopping 51 percent in the North American market, up from 45 percent in 2021. For those unaware, the North American region has always been a major market for Apple.
The iPhone maker was the number one smartphone brand in NA, followed by Samsung Electronics, which came in second after shipping 10.5 million handsets in Q1 2022. Meanwhile, Lenovo arrived third with 4 million smartphone shipped, while TCL and Google rounded up the top five list with ever fewer shipments. Out of the five companies, Apple, Google, and Lenovo saw a rise in market share during this quarter, while Samsung and various other smaller brands did not see a similar trend.
The report adds that Apple’s growth was thanks to the popularity of the iPhone 13 series, which had launched back in September 2022. Interestingly, the new 5G enabled iPhone SE had also helped boost the sales for the company during this quarter. In total, the North American region saw a total of 39 million smartphone shipments in Q1 2022, which was up by 3.7 percent over Q1 2021. Canalys believes that the region will “maintain healthy supply levels” despite ongoing supply constraints and shortages.
