MediaTek Dimensity 8000 series chip beats Snapdragon 888 in AnTuTu benchmarks

MediaTek is gearing up to launch new processors from its Dimensity 9000 and Dimensity 8000 series of processors. However, prior to any Dimensity powered smartphone’s release, a Dimensity 8000 series chip has been spotted on AnTuTu.

MediaTek

In the known benchmarking platform, the new chipset can be spotted with an impressive score of around 820,000 points. While there are more powerful chipsets, the Dimensity 8000 series is positioned under its top end flagship Dimensity 9000 series. Yet, this chipset managed to outperform Qualcomm’s 2021 flagship processor, the Snapdragon 888 SoC. As of right now, the Snapdragon 888 SoC scores around the 800,000 marks on AnTuTu. Previously, we had even reported on the Dimensity 9000 reportedly beating the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 as well, so it seems that MediaTek’s next gen lineup is quite the contender in the mobile chipset market this year.

Furthermore, Dimensity 8000 powered phones might be a great choice for many, since they would offer great performance and would be relatively cheaper than flagship handsets as well. Notably, the new Dimensity 8000 and Dimensity 9000 chips are also designed to be power efficient without compromising on performance. This year, various brands are expected to feature this chipset, including the likes of Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, and other brands.

MediaTeK Dimensity 9000

Keep in mind that this is still a synthetic benchmark and does not reflect on actual real world performance in areas like gaming. This benchmark was also shared by known tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website), meaning, its not an official test from the brand either and is likely an early benchmark. So stick around for more as we will be providing more updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.

HONOR ranked 2nd in terms of 2021 smartphone shipments in China

Smartphone shipments dropped 11% YoY in Q4 2021 in China but Apple saw some significant growth after the third quarter, thanks to the iPhone 13 series. The Cupertino-based company, as a result, ended on top and reached its highest-ever market share in the country.

HONOR was another success story, managing to more than double its market share compared to 2020 (via Counterpoint). It became China’s second-biggest OEM for the first time following independence from Huawei, driven by its mid-to-high-end products. The company has continued its upward trend in 2022, with sales during the last couple of weeks in January increasing 32% over the first two weeks.

vivo’s shipments dropped 13.8% YoY in Q4 2021 with its market share standing at 16.5%. While it stands third on the above chart, Counterpoint’s previous report that was based on sales positioned the company second. The newer one, on the other hand, is based on shipments.

But even as shipments continued to drop last year, the battle in the premium space intensified thanks to OEMs expanding their premium product portfolios.

Among Androids, the HONOR Magic3 led the segment. The device comes with a really impressive spec sheet and an iconic design.

HONOR also launched its first foldable in the market called the Magic V that competes directly against the OPPO Find N. More Android brands are expected to come up with their own foldable offerings soon and will heat up the competition further.

That said, the premium battle will not be limited to the Chinese smartphone market. HONOR, OPPO, Xiaomi, and vivo will bring their premium offerings to the global arena as well.

The same build will be soon rolled out to random regular users in the coming days as part of the ‘Stable Beta’ (batched) release. If these users don’t find any major issues, the build will see a wider rollout as part of the ‘Stable’ release.

In a nutshell, we can expect every user of Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE to be on the latest version of MIUI and Android within a month if everything goes fine. The update should be also live for other regional variants of the phone apart from EEA.

Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 foldable smartphone to reportedly launch in Q2 2022

Last year, Xiaomi had launched the Mi MIX Fold as the brand’s first foldable smartphone and now the Chinese company is gearing up to launch its successor, which is likely to be dubbed MIX Fold 2.

Ahead of any such official confirmation from the company, there have been few reports in the past few months shedding light on some aspects of the upcoming foldable smartphone and now we have a possible timeline.

Xioami MIX Fold
XIaomi Mi MIX Fold

A new report from Digital Chat Station reveals that the MIX Fold 2 foldable smartphone could get launched in the second quarter of this year (Q2 2022) which means that the device will launch before the end of June 2022.

If the previous reports are to be believed, then the upcoming second-generation MIX Fold smartphone will feature an 8.1-inch display with 2K resolution. It is also said that both the inner and the outer display panels on the device will have support for a high refresh rate.

It is also being claimed that this time, Xiaomi will be using new LTPO display panels on this flagship device, which means that there could be support for adaptive refresh rate as well, similar to what Samsung offers on its premium phones.

The device is most likely to come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and is expected to have a higher capacity battery and support for fast charging as well as wireless charging.

Apart from the MIX Fold 2, Xiaomi could also launch another foldable smartphone named MIX Flip to take on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series.

Samsung confirmed to host its Mobile World Congress event on February 27

Samsung has confirmed that the company will be hosting its next event on 27th February, which coincides with the Mobile World Congress 2022 which is set to kick-off in Barcelona, Spain, and run till 3rd March.

Making the announcement, Samsung revealed that the company will host a fully virtual keynote on 27th February at 1:00 PM ET. The event will be live-streamed by the company on its own website as well as on YouTube.

Samsung MWC 2022 Launch Event

This will mark the company’s first event after the launch of the flagship Galaxy S22 series smartphones a few days ago. However, there’s no information about what the company is planning to launch at the event.

Given that the Galaxy S22 series smartphones as well as the Galaxy Tab S8 lineup have already been launched, there’s a possibility that the company could focus on its foldable smartphones and reveal details about the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold and Flip phones. There’s also a possibility of the South Korean giant announcing new laptops, including premium Chromebooks or Windows 11-powered devices.

A lot has changed for Samsung when it comes to Mobile World Congress. Till 2018, the company announced its flagship Galaxy S-series phones at MWC but then it shifted the launch to its own Galaxy Unpacked events. In 2020, GSMA canceled the MWC event because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and last year, the event was postponed to June but Samsung didn’t attend the event physically.

Spotify acquires two podcast analytics firms Chartable and Podsights

Spotify, one of the leading music streaming platforms has been actively trying to expand its business and is focusing more on podcasts. In line with that, the company has announced that it is acquiring two podcast-related companies — Chartable and Podsights.

The company has revealed financial details related to these acquisitions but it marks the first major acquisition this year in the audio-related business.

Podsights’ team of around 40 full-time employees will join Spotify and the company says that it has no plans to adjust that team at this time. On the other hand, Chartable will be added to Spotify’s Megaphone.

Both the companies — Chartable and Podsights operate in the space of podcast marketing and ad attribution. They allow podcasters and networks to include tags in the shows to track details like who listened to the tracks, if they heard the ad or if they took any action upon hearing the advertisement, etc.

Talking more about the acquisition of Podsight, Spotify says that it will use the technology outside podcasting and bring it to the “full scope of the Spotify platform, including audio ads within music, video ads, and display ads.”

As for the Chartable, Spotify plans to focus more on the podcasters instead of advertisers. It will be integrating its audience insights and its promotional tools, SmartLinks and SmartPromos with Megaphone so podcasters can grow their business.

The development comes at a time when Spotify is facing backlash because of Joe Rogan’s podcast which critics say is spreading misinformation related to COVID-19. It has also led to several artists leaving the platform in protest.

OPPO F21 Pro+ live shot emerge, here’s what to expect

It was reported in December that OPPO is gearing to introduce the OPPO F21, F21, and F21 Pro+ smartphones in India. The F21 and F21 Pro+ is likely to launch between March 17 and March 21, whereas the F21 Pro is expected to debut sometime later. Tipster Abhishek Yadav recently shared a live shot of the OPPO F21 Pro+ to give a glimpse at its design.

The OPPO F21 Pro+ real-life image shows that it will feature a triple camera unit. The bottom edge of the device has a 3.5mm audio jack, a microphone, a USB-C port, and a speaker grille. The appearance of the device is like the OPPO A96 5G that debuted in China recently.

The Dimensity 800U powered OPPO F19 Pro+ 5G was announced in March 2021. The same device was rebranded as the OPPO A95 5G in April 2021. The only noticeable difference between the two phones was that the former supports 50W fast charging, whereas the latter offers 30W fast charging. In July 2021, the company unveiled the OPPO Reno6 Z handset in global markets. The device featured a 32-megapixel front camera and a 64-megapixel triple camera unit. The rest of its specs were identical to the F19 Pro+/A95 5G.

Hence, it is likely that the OPPO F19 Pro+ 5G could be a tweaked version of the OPPO A96 5G. It features a 6.43-inch AMOLED FHD+ display, a 16-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 48-megapixel (main) + 2-megapixel (depth) dual-camera unit. It is equipped with the Snapdragon 695 chipset, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of built-in storage, and a 4,500mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging. The upcoming Reno7 Z is speculated to be similar to the F21 Pro+ and A96 5G.

Design

These three devices do not differ too much in terms of design, but it is pretty evident that the color options and the overall aesthetics of the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G are more detailed and attractive.

Display

The Redmi Note 11 Pro and the Pro 5G come with a wider display sporting a diagonal of 6.67 inches, as well as a higher 120 Hz refresh rate. For the rest, they are almost the same as the other two variants: AMOLED panels with HDR10 and a Full HD+ resolution.

Specs & Software

The 5G variant is the most powerful thanks to the Snapdragon 695 mobile platform, and it is also the only one to support the 5G connectivity. The vanilla version is less impressive due to inferior memory configurations, while the 11S and the 11 Pro sit in the middle with an Helio G96 and up to 8 GB of RAM. All the phones run Android 11 customized by MIUI 13.

Camera

If we exclude the vanilla version sporting an inferior 50 MP main camera, all the phones come with a 108 MP main sensor alongside an 8 MP ultrawide lens.

Battery

The whole series is equipped with 5000 mAh batteries, but the Pro variants provide faster charging speeds thanks to 67W fast charging. Further, the Pro 5G should allow for longer battery life because its chipset is built at 6 nm.

Price

The prices vary depending on the market: in Europe, the prices begin from less than €200/$228 and they go up to €330/$375 for the most expensive configuration of the Pro 5G. If you do not need 5G, it does not make sense to opt for the Pro 5G: you’d better go for the original Note 11 Pro. If you do not even need 67W fast charging, then choose the 11S. The Redmi Note 11 has inferior cameras, so you should think twice before choosing it.

Motorola and Verizon reveal a 5G neckband to power AR/VR headsets

Motorola and Verizon are coming up with a smaller 5G neckband that could create the opening to enable lighter and slimmer AR/VR headset designs going forward. While the trajectory of development of AR/VR headsets has seen a gradual decrease in their sizes, they are still currently quite large. The new design by Motorola and Verizon looks at an innovative approach to the large headset by introducing a 5G neckband that will power such AR/VR headsets or glasses.

The new 5G neckband is the culmination of a joint effort by both Motorola and Verizon and the device is an iPod-like item that can be worn on the neck although it looks quite visible due to its current size. The idea is to free important space in the headset itself, as they will not need to integrate a processor and other components into the headset or glasses, thus freeing up space. The 5G neckband is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset in addition to 5G connectivity support. The 5G support will enable XR processing to be carried out via the cloud.

The new Motorola-Verizon 5G neckband for AR/VR headsets has a 5,000 mAh battery, a touchpad, USB-C support, DisplayPort 1.4 connectivity, an accelerometer, and a gyroscope. These features will ensure the versatility of the device, although there is no word yet about the release date and pricing of the 5G neckband. Both companies are currently working on AR and VR applications and we expect more official details from the duo on the release date for the device and more.
