Lei Jun compares Xiaomi 12 series against Apple iPhone 13 models

With the Xiaomi 12 series launch being just a couple of hours away, Lei Jun, the Founder and CEO of the company, shared new social media posts online, in which he compared the upcoming flagship model to Apple’s current gen top end iPhone 13 series.

Xiaomi

The executive shared the posts on his official Weibo account (a Chinese microblogging website). He stated that the Xiaomi 12 Pro has a better feel in your hands than the iPhone 12 Pro Max and showcased improvements in battery technology. According to Lei Jun, the Cupertino based company’s iPhone 13 Pro Max sports a 6.7 inch display, with its dimensions being 160.8mm x 78.1mm x 7.65mm and weight being 238 grams. On the other hand, the Chinese tech giant’s 12 Pro arrives with a 6.73 inch display with body measurements of  163.6mm x 74.6mm x 8.16mm and a weight of 205 grams.

In other words, despite having a larger display, the 12 Pro weighs less than the iPhone 13 Pro Max, while its 74.6 mm width also being narrower. Meaning, it is easier to grasp and would offer a better hand feel overall. Furthermore, he also highlighted the display, which is a curved screen that offers a 120Hz refresh rate and houses a punch hole camera over a large notch on the top. Similarly, the founder even pits the base Xiaomi 12 model against the vanilla iPhone 13 model as well, with the former also being narrower than the latter. It also received an A+ rating from DisplayMate.

Xiaomi

The senior official claimed that the brand also put in great efforts for its compact flagship phone. To make the motherboard on the Xiaomi 12 smaller, they made a costly sandwich structure while also developing the thinnest VC cooling plate to ensure proper thermal management. Despite the smaller size, the base 12 model features an increased battery capacity thanks to its new generation of cobalt oxide battery, which also raises the cost of the device. So, our previous report of the new flagship series costing a lot more than the previous generation might have just been confirmed.

Apple iPhone 14 models could come without a physical SIM card slot

A couple of days ago, it was reported that the Apple iPhone 15 Pro series models, which will get launched in the year 2023, could come without a physical nano-SIM card slot and only support dual eSIM cards.

Now, a new report indicates that the switch from physical SIM to eSIM only could happen earlier than expected. It is being claimed that the iPhone 14 series models getting launched in 2022 could lack physical nano-SIM slots.

Apple iPhone 13 All Colors Featured
Apple iPhone 13

According to a report from MacRumors, Apple has advised major network carriers in the United States to prepare for the launch of eSIM-only smartphones by September 2022. They have also accessed a document outlining the timeframe for this initiative, although the document doesn’t specifically mention Apple or the iPhone.

The company is even working on a transition as some U.S. carriers will start offering select iPhone 13 models without a nano-SIM card in the retail box from Q2 2022. The company is already selling iPhone 13 models without a nano-SIM in the box if the product is sold through Apple Store or Apple.com.

We expect the Cupertino-based technology giant to still make iPhone models with physical SIM card slots for the regions where eSIM functionality isn’t available.

Prior to this, there were rumors about Apple planning to remove the Lightning port from the smartphones and if the company also gets rid of the physical SIM card slot, then it would be a step further for a seamless design as well as improve water resistance.

Apple has a track record of taking some bold decisions so there’s a possibility that this information could turn out to be true. We expect to get more information about this in the coming weeks or months.

iPhone 13 is missing noise cancellation for calls due to a glitch

Apple iPhones have come with a noise cancellation feature for phone calls for a while now. The feature reduces ambient noise from the surroundings making for a more crisp and clear voice quality while on a call. However, this feature was never available for iPhone 13 users, and they have been waiting for months for Apple to address this issue.

On December 24, 2021, Reddit user throwawayowl999 complained that the iPhone 13 lacks “a front mic used for noise cancellation. The setting can be found in Accessibility -> Audio/Visual.” Other Redditors pointed out that he was right about the feature missing from the iPhone 13. However, the iPhone 13 does not lack the mic that enables this feature (via 9to5Mac).

The issue is indeed a software glitch, as can be observed in a discussion on the Apple forum from October where user rpwils2 wrote, “I am not able to find the toggle to switch off the noise cancellation feature on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Has this been moved or removed? When I use FaceTime and talk via the speaker my voice cuts out.”

An Apple Community Specialist replied that they need to enable ‘noise cancelation’ on their iPhone and linked an article to help users adjust the audio settings on the iPhone. However, the problem is that iPhone 13 users can’t find this specific feature in their settings menu.

User dagocarlito also replied to this query stating, “The iPhone 13 has ‘never’ had this option with iOS 15 because it’s a glitch. I’ve been speaking with apple support regarding this. It’s a known issue they are working on with no resolution timeline at the moment. This issue also creates problems with echos on CarPlay when talking between iPhone 13’s. It is a major flaw that needs to be resolved asap.”

Even after two months and the iOS 15.2 update, the issue remains unsolved. And apparently, the iOS 15.3 beta also fails to address or alleviate this problem. It remains to be seen how much more time Apple will take before addressing this issue or issuing a fix for it. So stay tuned for more updates on the matter.

iPhone 14 Max may get a 120Hz display thanks to LG

Back in September, rumors of Apple replacing the Mini variant of the iPhone 14 with the bigger screen Max variant first arose. The move reportedly comes due to poor sales of the iPhone 12 Mini compared to its larger screen variants.

More information on this supposed upcoming iPhone 14 Max surfaced earlier this month, suggesting that the phone will likely feature a 60Hz LTPS display due to Samsung being Apple’s sole supplier of 120Hz LTPO. However, recent industry developments suggest that might not be the case anymore.

According to a report by PhoneArena, Apple finally has enough wiggle room to outfit their iPhone 14 Max variants with a 120Hz LTPO screen. The news comes days after LG succeeded in producing 120Hz LTPO display panels and securing a sizable order from Apple for the same. Apple, in the past, has had to source their 120Hz displays exclusively from Samsung, giving the Korean tech giant a monopoly on the matter.

With LG’s entrance into the Apple iPhone display supply chain, Samsung’s monopoly is effectively broken, giving the Cupertino-based company some wiggle room for negotiations.

So what can we expect from the iPhone 14 Max?

According to previous reports, the iPhone 14 Max (not to be confused with iPhone 14 Pro Max) will replace the iPhone 14 Mini and come equipped with a big 6.7-inch 120Hz LTPO display. The display will be the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, the 14 Max will be a cheaper alternative and, therefore, will miss many bells and whistles offered in the more premium variants.

Although the changelog suggests that the latest update fixes the settings interface bug but from the comments below the post it can be observed that people are still facing this issue.

For those unaware, the OnePlus 8 series devices as well as some other devices have been facing issues with the settings UI that has been causing icons and options to misalign. Not a system-breaking bug but isn’t very pretty to look at either.

The company has confirmed that the update is rolling out in phases, which means the update may not be available on your device just yet. However, we can expect OnePlus to roll out the OxygenOS 11.0.10.10 update widely for the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro in the coming weeks.

Some Google Pixel 6 units are facing screen auto rotation issues

Earlier this year, Google launched the Pixel 6 phones with punch-hole AMOLED display, Tensor chipset, and Android 12 OS. Soon after its launch, some users started facing fingerprint scanner issues, followed by network issues, and screen-cracking issues. Now, there’s a new bug reported by netizens where the screen does not automatically rotate.

As reported by AndroidPolice, the screen rotation on some Pixel 6 units do not work. It seems that the phone’s sensors aren’t responding and it is making the phone stuck in portrait mode.

The publication tried troubleshooting one of such units and as expected, the major problem was with the sensors. The gyroscope and accelerometer sensors didn’t return any data to testing apps like Sensor Test. Similarly, the compass sensor was also not working as again, it didn’t show any data. When tried in map apps the apps didn’t show data of the way the phone was pointed to. However, some other sensors like Barometer, Proximity, Magnetometer, Light sensors were found to be working in the unit tested by the publication.

As of now, there’s no clear fix for such units. But, at least a simple reboot may help. We expect the company to respond to such issues and provide a fix as soon as possible.
