Qualcomm is already reportedly working on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 flagship chip

In the wake of the recent release of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset for flagship devices, the rumor is rife that the chipmaker is already working on its next flagship. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 may already be in development according to a Weibo tipster. The chip industry tipster asserts that the possibly accelerated timeline for the new chipset may not be unconnected with the progress made by MediaTek in the field.

The top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor is now gradually being deployed in flagship offerings by some of the popular smartphone manufacturers. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 comes with a lot of improvements and extended capabilities from its predecessors and peers across the chip industry. The Weibo tipster, Mobile Chip Masters has also put a probable release date for the next Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset within the second quarter of 2022. The tipster specifically mentioned May 2022 as the date of release of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

The Snapdragon Gen 2 is expected to outperform the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, as well as MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000, which is also a premium processor. The tipster speculated that Qualcomm is fast-tracking the development of the new chipset as a direct response to the Dimensity 9000, although it could also be a batch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 that was ported to TSMC amidst the global chip crisis.

The leak highlights the intense competition that is going on between chipmakers as they continue to seek products that outclass other competitors as durable, efficient and innovative processors.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp hit hard by phishing attacks, Meta files lawsuit

Lately, phishing attacks have been on the rise and have vastly affected Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp users. In an attempt to stop ongoing phishing attacks, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, filed a federal lawsuit in California court.

Facebook is now Meta

Meta has stated that the attackers were trying to steal the login credentials of various users of its multiple platforms by creating fake login pages that looked like Meta’s social media platforms to obtain Meta’s users’ login credentials. The goal was to deceive the users into entering their credentials, like usernames and passwords.

For those unaware, Phishing attacks are the practice of sending fraudulent communications that appear to come from a trustworthy source. It is usually done through email. The goal is to steal sensitive data like credit card and login information or install malware on the victim’s machine.

Jessica Romero, Meta’s director of platform and litigation, said that “Reports of phishing attacks have been on the rise across the industry, and we are taking this action to uncover the identities of the people behind the attack and stop their harmful conduct.”

Meta made a blog post stating that the phishing scam included more than 39,000 fake websites and masked their identity by using a relay service that redirected the internet traffic to their phishing pages while simultaneously concealing their actual location and identities. The relay service also masked the online hosting providers of the perpetrators.

According to the social media giant, phishing attacks have increased since March 2021, and Meta has suspended thousands of URLs to such phishing sites. Although the culprits are yet to be identified, the lawsuit is another step in its actions to protect people’s safety and privacy. The filed lawsuit by Meta shows the company’s position against those trying to abuse its platforms.

In the blog post, meta reassured that they would continue to fight the phishing attacks that try to deceive its users and share the phishing sites with other platforms so that they can block the attackers as well.

Moto G Stylus 2022 appears in 5K renders revealing key details

Back in June, Motorola announced the Moto G Stylus 5G in the US. It offered Stylus-Pen support and Snapdragon 480 SoC at an affordable price. Coming to the end of this year, the rumours for a new stylus phone dubbed Moto G Stylus 2022 were up in the air. Last time, the phone’s renders were leaked in the Black colour variant and now, the device has appeared in another shade.

According to the renders(courtesy – Prepp), the Motorola Moto G Stylus 2022 edition will come with a flat-screen display. It seems to have a large punch-hole panel with the selfie camera cut-out at the top middle as compared to the predecessor’s left-side camera cut-out. The phone seems to have a side-facing fingerprint scanner which hints that the device may have an LCD screen and not an OLED panel.

It also has the volume rocker above the side fingerprint reader which apparently also doubles up as a power button. Moving to the rear, the device has a triple camera system and rumours reveal that it is a 48MP sensor. We expect the other sensor to be an ultra-wide and a tertiary lens. The phone also has a Motorola brand at the rear.

Previously, the smartphone was touted to come with a 6.81-inch display and have a Snapdragon 480+ 5G chipset. The device is tipped to house either a 4,500mAh or a 5,000mAh battery cell. It is expected to run on Android 12 out of the box.

OnePlus Buds Z2 Indian pricing tipped: Report

Last week, OnePlus launched its latest pair of TWS earphones in European and US markets, the OnePlus Buds Z2. It came as a successor to the popular OnePlus Buds Z which is an affordable TWS earphone from OnePlus. The new Buds Z2 brought some interesting features to the earphones like active noise cancellation and up to 38 hours of battery backup.

Now, according to a report by 91mobiles, the new Buds Z2 might soon arrive in India as popular tipster Yogesh Brar has tipped its pricing in the subcontinent.

OnePlus buds z2

The report states that OnePlus is gearing up to launch the OnePlus Budz2 in India at Rs 4,999($66). This is a bit pricier than the release price of the OnePlus Buds Z in the country but is probably due to the inclusion of premium features like the active noise canceling, 11nm bass-tuned dynamic driver, and up to 38 hours battery backup.

Keeping up with the pattern, the earbuds are launching at a lower price compared to other markets at $66, while the Buds Z2 go for around $99 in the US and €99 in European markets.OnePlus Buds Z2 white

As the TWS earphones have already been released in other markets, we know that they will feature 11mm base-tuned Dynamic Drivers and come with a 3-mic setup for calibrating the Nouse and White reduction. It has Dolby Atmos support and features Bluetooth v5.2.

The Buds Z2 is capable of 40dB Active Noise Cancellation and also features a transparency mode which is useful for listening to music or taking calls while being aware of your surroundings.

OnePlus Buds Z2 comes with a charging case and has a total battery life of 38 hours. It supports OnePlus’s Flash Charge technology that offers up to 5 hours of music playback with just 10 minutes of charging. It can offer up to 7 hours if the ANC feature is turned off.

Although there have been no words from OnePlus on the possible release date of the Buds Z2 TWS earphones, rumors suggest it will launch with the OnePlus 9RT in India which is expected to be released before the end of the year, so stay tuned.

Oppo patents a Smart Ring, will be another accessory like its Smart Glass

As technology becomes more advanced, gadgets become more compact, because we are able to fit more circuits, more transistors into the device than ever before. Humans started with the giant server, then the computer, then the smartphone, then the smartwatch. And now we can make a smart ring that can fit onto your finger?

Well, the concept of the smart ring is exactly new since the current known player in the smart ring business is Motiv with its Motiv Ring, released back in 2017.

But Oppo is looking to revive the industry as the latest reports from China show that Oppo has been granted patents to develop its own Smart Ring.

oppo patent

An insider from China reports that from the QCC Database, they found that Oppo submitted a patent for its own smart ring, and it was approved by Chinese authorities.

oppo smart ring patent 1

The listing in the database notes that the Oppo Smart Ring is an accessory, not an electronic product, and it is supposed to be a fashion addition to smart glasses. Coincidentally, Oppo just released its first-ever smart glass, the Oppo Air Glass last week.

The Oppo Air Glass are a pair of AR(assisted reality) smart eyeglasses released by Oppo. The glass features futuristic styling with a single lens design and weighs less than 30 grams. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC, it features functionalities like weather reminders, schedule reminders, a Health app, and a teleprompter which will benefit users with speeches, presentations, and many more scenarios.

OPPO Air Glass Hands-On

As for other details such as the specs, battery or design of the Oppo Smart Ring, it was not listed within the database. Hopefully, the development of the Oppo Smart Ring is already underway as the concept sounds interesting.

Xiaomi 12 to be Xiaomi’s First Compact Flagship in years, Xiaomi 12 Pro will be its bigger sibling

The compact flagship category has been largely ignored by companies and consumers for the past 3 years, especially on the Android camp. However, tides are changing ever since Apple restarted the compact smartphone trend with its iPhone 12 Mini last year and continued it on with the iPhone 13 Mini in 2021. Xiaomi is looking to compete in the compact flagship category as well, as new promo images confirm the Xiaomi 12 to be the company’s first compact flagship in years since the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE.

xiaomi 12 antutu

Popular benchmarking website, Antutu recently shared the official promo images of the Xiaomi Mi 12 series on its Weibo, stating that the Xiaomi 12 series is coming in two size options, both options are equally deserved to be called a flagship in the smartphone space.

Leaked images of the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro
Leaked images of the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro

Antutu announces in its post that the Xiaomi 12 is the smaller and more compact flagship, however, it does not skimp on the essentials of being a flagship smartphone, it aims to deliver the flagship smartphone experience with excellent one-handed usage. The Xiaomi 12 Pro, on the other hand, is the big brother which aims to provide the ultimate multimedia experience with its bigger screen, bigger battery, and larger sound system.

As revealed earlier this week, the Xiaomi 12 series will be launching on Dec. 28 at 19:30 CST and from what the leaks have gathered so far, there will be three models in the lineup, namely the Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi 12X.

Under the hood, The Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro are to be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, whereas listings reveal the Xiaomi 12X is equipped with the Snapdragon 870. As for the charging speeds, the Xiaomi 12 and 12X are expected to support 67W fast charging, while the Xiaomi 12 Pro may offer 120W rapid charging. Coming to the software, the Xiaomi 12 series will come preinstalled with Android 12 and MIUI 13.

Chinese modder cuts down an LG Wing to make a custom compact smartphone

When it came to smartphones, LG has launched some crazy designs, whether it is the LG G8X ThinQ’s dual-screen or the LG G5’s modular design, so seeing it call it quits was actually tragic.

A similarly quirky design is the LG Wing, the companies last major launch back in September before shutting down its smartphone division for good. The phone recently received the Android 11 update, which could be its last. However, recently an LG Wing user gave the phone a visual update showcasing how it would look without its wing display.

As spotted by Mishaal Rahman and first reported by Android Police, the user took to Bilibili (a Chinese video-sharing platform) to upload a video of him dissecting the LG Wing and putting a display to the only front-facing part of the phone that didn’t have one.

LG Wing mod

The video does not capture the complete modding process but showcases the different stages of the build. The user effectively gets rid of the swerving display along with the bottom display. He then proceeds to assemble the logic board onto the new body, which used to be the support panel for the Wings. However, that’s not the only part that the modder harvested off of the LG Wing, as it can be noticed that the bottom module of this makeshift build appears to be soldered to the main body.

Now comes the main challenge of making the so-called ‘smartphone sandwich’: the assembly of the screen, the logic board, and the battery to the smartphone’s body. Here, the modder decides to go an innovative route and places the battery directly under the display—quite a unique design, also a fire hazard. But we doubt this prototype design will be mass-produced anytime soon.

LG Wing mod_2

The finished product is shown to have a working screen, a pop-up camera module, working side buttons, and a custom LED strip. This build’s general smartphone functionalities are still questionable, but the mod does carry the spirit of LG phone’s crazy unique designs.

TSMC receives approval from Taiwan for its chip plant in Japan

Taiwan has just given TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.) the green light for its plans to set up a new chip plant in Japan. The approval was given Taiwan’s Investment Commission earlier this week.

TSMC Featured

According to TaiwanNews, the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Investment Commission stated that the Taiwanese chipmaker’s plans were approved since the firm’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities is still at least a generation ahead of its Japanese counterparts. In other words, the world’s largest contract chipmaker does not face risks regarding its high end chip process technology being leaked to its rivals.

Notably, the new project has TSMC work together with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) in the form of a joint venture as Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM). The chip site will be situated in the Kumamoto Prefecture and will manufacture the less advanced 22nm and 28nm process based chips that are used in microcontrollers and image sensors. Meaning, the chips being produced will have a wide variety of applications in industries like consumer electronics to even automobiles as well.

TSMC

As of right now, the initial capital expenditure for the new facility is expected to be around 195 billion New Taiwan Dollars or roughly about 7 billion US Dollars. Furthermore, the project has also garnered strong support from the Japanese government, which is also seeking to strengthen its position in semiconductors at the moment. Out of the 7 billion US Dollars, TSMC is set to invest around 2.12 billion US Dollars, while SSS will invest around 500 million US Dollars in the joint venture. The construction of the site is planned to start next year and is expected to be completed sometime in 2024.

Huawei teases P50 Pocket folding phone’s design in a Silver variant

Earlier today (21st December 2021), Huawei shared a new teaser for its upcoming foldable smartphone, the P50 Pocket. The new image poster showcases the device from the side and even reveals a new color variant as well.

Huawei

The brand shared the new teaser poster on its official Weibo account (a Chinese microblogging website). In the social media post, the company mentions that today marks the “winter solstice,” which means that it is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. While this term might not seem relevant to upcoming smartphone, the Chinese tech giant could be hinting at the name of the new color variant of the P50 Pocket that it showcased in the image poster.

Looking at the teaser, we can observe the side profile of the P50 Pocket, which is in a Silver color variant. Previously, we had reported on the P50 Pocke was spotted on Harper’s Bazaar, a known fashion magazine, with Chinese actress Guan Xiaotong endorsing the smartphone in a Gold color variant. In other words, it is confirmed that the P50 Pocket will be available in at least a Silver and Gold variant, with the former possibly being called something akin to Winter (if not downright calling it the Winter Solstice). Notably, the grooves on the Silver version’s rear panel also appear to be different from the Gold version.

Huawei P50 Pocket images

Talking about the specs of the highly anticipated smartphone, it features a 6.8 inch primary display that folds inward like a clamshell while the external panel is a 1 inch circular panel that is housed below the camera module on the back. Under the hood, the device is expected to be powered by a 4,100mAh battery pack that might support 66W fast charging. It will also run the Kirin 9000 chipset, which will reportedly not feature 5G support. The Huawei P50 Pocket is set to be unveiled on December 23, so stick around as we will be covering the launch event.

According to The Guardian, the surprising incident took place back in September. Yiran Sherry, 33, and her husband were dropping their son to school on the Tesla when her water broke. But unfortunately, the family got stuck in traffic as the mother was going into labor. So, they realized that reaching the hospital might not be a possibility now. Thus, her husband (Keating Sherry, 34) put the vehicle on autopilot and set the destination for the hospital that was 20 minutes away.

Following this, he began attending to his wife. By the time the family reached the hospital, the mother has successfully and safely give birth to her daughter while hospital nurses cut the baby’s umbilical cord over the car’s front seat. The nurses even started calling her child the “Tesla baby.” Notably, the couple had even considered naming their child Tess, in tribute to the EV brand that possibly saved them in a crucial time, but decided on Maeve Lily.

Keating Sherry also expressed gratitude towards the brand saying “Thank you genius Tesla engineers for your brilliant design of autopilot.” While the Elon Musk owned automobile company had been facing a lot of negative PR in recent months, this arrives as a silver lining to the controversial autopilot system. Unfortunately, the EV maker has yet to respond to any queries for a comment as of right now.
