vivo V23 Series Launch Date India Leak

According to the industry sources of 91Mobiles, the vivo V23 series will launch in India on January 4, 2022. The specific date is mentioned in a poster shared by the sources.

Some Pixel users still forced to watch Netflix in 540p despite Google promising fix around 8 months ago

Widevine issues are something that every Android OEM appears to be dealing with lately with a few of their devices, and Google is no exception. Multiple Pixel users had earlier complained about being unable to stream content from Netflix in a resolution higher than 540p, which is definitely not ideal for today’s 1080p and even 2K smartphone displays. It seemed that pretty much every device from Pixel 3 and up was affected.

Google in April this year then acknowledged the problem, promising it was working on a fix. However, fast forward eight months later to today and there’s still no sign of a fix. And new complaints keep piling up.

Pixel 3 selfie camera featured

For the uninitiated, problems with video quality on streaming apps like Netflix emerge due to Widevine issues. OEMs typically get their devices L1 certified which allows playing content at 1080p. The Pixel phones were not excluded from this treatment, but for some reason, the Widevine certification dropped to L3 for some users. L3 means that Netflix can play in quality no further than 540p.

Multiple complaints have resultantly popped up and one Redditor has even compiled a list of complaints across the internet (via XDA Developers). While the list obviously contains reports dating back to early 2021, there are also some from as recent as 21 days ago, proving that the problem never really disappeared.

Eight months sure is quite a long time for fixing a bug like this, which makes us wonder if Google has quietly swept the entire thing under the rug. The Google Pixel 3 is also nearing its EOL with software updates – all the more reason to fix the problem as soon as possible.

Anyhow, for now, we recommend those Google Pixel owners affected by the Widevine issue to take the matter up to the official Pixel Phone forums or Twitter to remind Google about it, just in case they’ve forgotten.

Huawei gets patent for technology related to Android applications migration

Chinese tech powerhouse Huawei has made tremendous progress in the development of the HarmonyOS, its homegrown operating system. Huawei also has its app market known as AppGallery where a growing number of both HarmonyOS-based and Android-based applications could be obtained. The Chinese company has now published a new technology related to the migration of Android applications, possibly to HarmonyOS. The patent for the new technology was filed with the China Intellectual Property Office in June 2020 and has now obtained the patent with the number CN113821333A.Huawei app Migration patent

The new technology could be used to export and restore basic resource information and Android applications in the Android operating system. The new application can also generate resource information collections for Android applications. The patent is in the field of operating system technology and can also call the Ashmem and Binder kernel drivers to export the relevant resource information.

The new patent could be indicative of the progress Huawei is making in ultimately making it possible for Android devices to seamlessly migrate to its HarmonyOS. The Huawei AppGallery continues to expand with a wide variety of apps that are also available on Google PlayStore. There has also been a massive growth of developers and apps only found on the AppGallery.

Pete Lau talks about difficulties in delivering ColorOS 12 for older OnePlus phones

Earlier this year, OnePlus switched to ColorOS for its smartphones in China with the launch of the OnePlus 9 series. The brand even merged the codebase of the OxygenOS with that of ColorOS for international markets. Hence, the Android 12 software for the existing as well as the upcoming devices is nothing but ColorOS.

Due to this, the company is facing difficulties in delivering Android 12 on time and without bugs. With the increase in criticism from both home and international markets, Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, has issued a statement on Weibo.

ColorOS 12 Logo Featured A

The brand executive reiterates that it is difficult to deliver ColorOS 12 for the phones that are running HydrogenOS via OTA update. On top of that, the company has to even take care of user data.

Pete confirms that the migration from HydrogenOS to ColorOS will not result in a factory reset. In other words, users will not lose any files and applications on their devices while upgrading.

The brand is working on a seamless migration process. This is why it’s taking more time for the HydrogenOS software team, which has been now merged with the ColorOS team, to deliver Android 12. The merged team is also striving to improve the smoothness of the system.

For now, the ColorOS 12 stable update is available for the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro in China. Even OnePlus 9R users can try the new software via the Open Beta program.

Lastly, Pete teases that ColorOS will become fast and stable in the near future. This new experience will debut on the OnePlus 10 Pro.

Report: Baidu fires over 100 people from gaming unit as China cracks down on gaming

Baidu has apparently laid off more than 100 employees in China, following the recent regulations from the local government that are cracking down on the Chinese video gaming industry.

Baidu Logo

According to a SCMP report, two sources close to the matter have revealed that the Chinese online search engine giant is currently downsizing its video gaming unit to cut down on losses over Beijing’s “anti-gaming” regulations. As per the two sources, the decision was announced to some employees within the gaming unit earlier this week, although, the exact number of staff being laid off is unknown at the moment. Baidu has yet to publicly comment on this news as of right now.

The move by the company also highlights the negative impacts on the gaming industry in China as the government cracks down on video gaming in general. The government has restricted the gaming time for teenagers under the age of 18 to a maximum of three hours per week, while also suspending new gaming licenses since the end of July. During the latest quarter, the tech giant saw a net loss of a notable 16.6 billion Yuan (roughly 2.6 billion US Dollars), after investing around 18.9 billion Yuan (roughly 3 billion US Dollars) as per a recent financial report.

Baidu

As the firm pulls away from gaming, it is now shifting its investment into “hard tech” sectors such as autonomous vehicles and the semiconductor industry. Although, both these segments require years if not decades of investment before turning a profit owing to the technical complexity and rising competition.

Through a blog post in the Huawei Xinsheng online forum (an online community for Huawei users in China), he shared the many milestones that Huawei has achieved in the smartphone market throughout the 10 years since Huawei launched its first flagship, the Huawei Ascend P1, back in January 2012.

Huawei first started development for the Huawei Ascend P1 as early as in the summer of 2011, where Huawei wanted to put out its first competitive flagship smartphone to the market to make a name for itself in the industry. Mr. Wang Yonggang recalled that Huawei called in their research team from Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an to fly over to Shenzhen to help develop the Huawei Ascend P1 together with their Shenzhen team.

After many months of market research and prototypes, they finally launched the Huawei Ascend P1 in January 2012 with a 4.3 AMOLED display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8MP BSI rear camera in a lightweight and 7.6mm unibody, at a flagship price of RMB 2,999(471 USD) at the time.

Although the Huawei Ascend P1 was not a bestseller by any metrics, it was Huawei’s first step to transition away from a B2B (Business to Business) company to a B2C(Business to Consumer) company with its first-ever flagship smartphone for the Chinese public.

Huawei’s next flagship, the Huawei Ascend P2, however, was not released in China and was instead released outside of China in markets such as the European and Japanese markets in 2013. This was due in part that the Huawei Ascend P2 was equipped with 4G which China did not have a proper rollout till 2014, and therefore Huawei decided to release it in the global market instead. The Huawei Ascend P2 was also the first Huawei flagship to be equipped with Huawei’s in-house Kirin SOC.

The next milestone for Huawei was the Huawei Ascend P6 with its show-stopping ID design, as the P6 was the world’s thinnest smartphone at its release, with a thickness of only 6.18mm. Looking back, it was the Huawei flagship that defined the premium design language of Huawei P series flagships for many years to come.

The next big leap was the Huawei P9 with its dual rear camera setup. The Huawei P9 was Huawei’s first phone to collaborate with famous camera imaging company Leica, and the P9’s rear camera was equipped with a normal color lens as well as a monochrome lens. The phone then captures the image with both lenses and uses computational software to provide the best-looking photo for the user.

The next generational leap in photography was with the Huawei P20 Pro with its industry-breaking triple camera setup consisting of a wide lens, a monochrome lens, and a telephoto lens for versatile photography. The Huawei P20 Pro also came with the popular colourway Twilight, which solidified Huawei’s flagship design philosophy in the premium market.

The Huawei P30 series adopted a new type of RYYB colored lens for better images, while the P40 series provided marginal upgrades, such as 10x optical zoom for the series.

The Huawei P50 series was quite a confusing flagship lineup until recently. But Huawei launched the P50 Pocket this week, the company’s first-ever clamshell flagship foldable, which proved that Huawei is bringing forward innovation to its P series flagships once again.
