POCO India has an event on Sep. 30, new C-series phone expected

Have a hard time catching up with the long list of products that have launched this month? There are still more lined up including a new product from POCO that is scheduled to launch next week.

The POCO India Twitter account revealed today that it has an announcement set for September 30 at noon. From the poster, the new product is expected to be a new phone under its C-series.

The last POCO C-series smartphone announced by the Xiaomi-owned company is the POCO C3. It launched in October of 2020 which means it is almost a year old. Considering the refresh time between devices, it is a surprise that a successor wasn’t announced sooner.

The POCO C3 was a success in India, selling more than 2 million units in its first 9 months. That isn’t bad for a phone that launched for roughly $100. We want to believe the successor will also have a super affordable price tag.

The C3 launched with very similar specs to the Redmi 9C. The key differences between the two phones are a smaller screen and the lack of a fingerprint scanner on the Redmi 9C. There are speculations that its successor may be similar to a Redmi phone. However, considering there isn’t a Redmi 10C yet, we may see the roles get reversed with POCO launching the phone first and then Redmi relaunching it under its own brand in another market.

OnePlus once again details ColorOS 12 update plan for its devices

Last week, OPPO unveiled ColorOS 12 based on Android 12 in China. The company even disclosed the list of OPPO and OnePlus smartphones that will be updated to the latest version of its mobile operating system. A few days later, OnePlus once again clarifies the ColorOS 12 update schedule for its devices.

ColorOS 12 Logo Featured A

Liu Fengshuo, the COO of OnePlus who also happens to be the head of the company’s R&D department, has shared further details about the Android 12-based ColorOS 12 update for OnePlus phones.

According to the executive, the brand will follow the timeline that was shared at the end of the ColorOS 12 announcement. As per that plan, the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro will receive the public beta update in October, while the remaining eligible devices will get access in the first half of 2022.

The exec details that the OnePlus 9R will get the beta update in January 2022 itself. He also says that users will be notified at the end of each month regarding the update schedule for the upcoming month.

For those unaware, OPPO has a habit of sharing the ColorOS update plan every month. Hence, it’s not surprising to learn that it will continue to do so for the next iteration of its operating system.

OnePlus-9R-green
OnePlus 9R

Lastly, he clarifies that although the OnePlus 7/7T and OnePlus 8/8T series of handsets will receive the update later than the OnePlus 9R, the firm will complete the public beta rollout by the end of H1 2022. The reason behind the delay is that these smartphones will be migrated from HydrogenOS to ColorOS.

Additionally, OnePlus Community Manager Jian Lan Shuai has revealed that users who installed ColorOS Early Access update on OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus 8T will not be receiving an OTA update to ColorOS 12. In order to receive the new update, they will have to switch back to HydrogenOS.

Having said that, since we are months away from the stipulated update timeline for the older OnePlus phones, we expect the brand to let out more details in the coming days.

5G smartphone shipments rise in emerging markets as competition heats up

5G smartphone shipments in Q2 2021 rose 6.5% QoQ in emerging markets, even as the total shipments in such regions dropped by 5% in the same time frame, as per the latest data from Counterpoint Market Monitor Service.

The enthusiasm generated by Apple‘s first 5G-capable device, the iPhone 12, as well as the introduction of 5G models in the budget segments by OEMs such as OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Realme, can be linked to the increase in 5G shipments. In addition, emerging economies, particularly Southeast Asia and the Middle East, are catching up in terms of 5G infrastructure, which is driving up demand for low-cost 5G phones (via: Counterpoint).

5g-smartphone-shipments

Increasing Share of 5G in Shipments

Smartphone OEMs, particularly in emerging markets, are now prioritizing 5G products in their portfolios. Take Realme for example, whose 5G share in its emerging market smartphone shipments went up from 8.8% in Q1 to 15.9% in Q2. The brand has seen the most substantial growth among the competition with a 135% YoY global shipment increase to 15 million in Q2 2021.

smartphone-shipment-annual-growth

smartphone-oem-shipment-changes

The OEM now ranks sixth for the first time. Realme’s global scene is quite positive as well where its 5G device shipments have risen by 37.0% in Q2, up from an increase of 22.7% in Q1.

5G Battle Heating up in Emerging Markets

5G smartphones are turning standard in the developed markets, particularly in countries like the US. However, the same cannot be said about emerging markets where 4G smartphones continue to be sold, particularly in the more wallet-friendly end of the spectrum. This means that such markets have the maximum potential for growth.

The Indian market serves as a great example for this case and has seen 75.5% QoQ growth in 5G device shipments. It will likely continue to demonstrate similar growth rates until the rest of the year and beyond.

Countries in Southeast Asia will also likely see a 5G shipment increase in the second half of 2021. But the real difference will be made in 2022 when 5G will go live commercially.

With more and more affordable 5G offerings hitting the market, the involved OEMs should witness a considerable jump in their market shares. No OEM would like to miss out on this wave and we should hence be seeing the decline of 4G-only phones.

Vivo patents smartphone with detachable dual sided pop up camera

Vivo is apparently working on a new unique new smartphone. The company has patented a device that features a detachable pop up camera mechanism that houses camera sensors on the front and back.

Vivo

According to LetsGoDigital, the Chinese smartphone maker filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) that was published earlier this month. The patent describes a smartphone with a pop up camera mechanism on the top right corner. While pop up camera usually house a camera module for taking selfies, this version also houses dual cameras on the rear that function as the primary rear sensors. While this is already a notable aspect, the most highlighting part about the patent is the fact that the entire pop up module can be detached.

Once removed from the main body, the camera system can now be used independently and the users can even position the camera system in different manners thanks to a hinge mechanism built into the detachable pop up module. Furthermore, the cameras can even capture different field of views since it has a camera on either side. Notably, the company’s patent also details this detachable module, which houses a battery that enables it to function separately.

Vivo

While users can detach the camera to use it independently, it can still communicate with the parent smartphone as it houses a Wi-Fi module as well. In other words, a possible application could be that the user detaches the module and places it at an angle to take a picture. The preview could be displayed on the smartphone’s display while also offering support for different functions like night node. Unfortunately, this is still just a patent and we have no way of confirming if the company is actually working on such a device.

HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 with 144Hz display to launch on September 26

HONOR has scheduled a launch event in China for September 26. The brand has been gradually revealing the devices that will be announced at this conference for the past few days. Today, the company has confirmed that a new version of HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 will be debuting at this event.

HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 Teaser

According to the latest teaser by the HONOR Life Weibo account, the brand will be launching a new HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 model on September 26. As per the post, this laptop will sport a 144Hz refresh rate display. Further, despite featuring thin bezels, the webcam will be still housed inside the top bezel.

Unfortunately, nothing else is known about this notebook. We can expect it to arrive with processor upgrades and other features, in addition to the confirmed high refresh rate display.

Most importantly, this is the first time HONOR is calling its Pro laptop with its display size. For those unaware, the Pro notebooks from HONOR have always had a 16.1-inch display. This suggests that the company may release smaller Pro variants in the future.

Having said that, other than this computer, HONOR has also confirmed to unveil HONOR V7 tablet, HONOR MagicBook V 14 laptop, and HONOR Vision X2 smart TV at the upcoming HONOR Life launch event on September 26 in China.

Latest 10-inch+ OLED panel shipment numbers points towards their increasing usage in devices

According to UBI Research, the shipment of 10-inch OLED panels used in tablets, notebooks, monitors, and TVs reached 10.29 million units during the first half of 2021.

This was due to high sales of gadgets that use OLED panels, the analyst firm said (via: THE ELEC). The panels accumulated $2.95 billion during the first half of 2021, which is around 2.4 times the sales figure of $1.221 billion recorded the same time a year ago.

Further, UBI Research said that Samsung was turning its rigid A2 OLED line from a smartphone panel manufacturing line to the one that manufactures IT OLED panels. This will be done by running the A2 line at 40,000 to 50,000 Gen 6 (1500x1850mm) substrates per month in production capacity, starting in the second half of the year.

Near the end of the year, Samsung Display is also scheduled to start producing OLED screens for Apple’s iPad. This will allow the IT OLED market to have explosive growth in 2022, UBI Research noted. For this, Samsung Display has been accelerating its spending plan for a Gen 8.5 (2200x2500mm) IT OLED line.

Apple iPad 10.2 (2021)
Apple iPad 10.2 (2021)

Samsung isn’t the only one accelerating its OLED manufacturing capabilities though, as it is joined by LG Display that recently finalized a plan to build a Gen 6 IT OLED line at Paju.

Notably, 3.4 million units out of the total OLED shipment during the first half of the year were for TVs. This figure could increase during the second half of the year with the upcoming Black Friday.

Still, the shipment of OLED panels smaller than 10-inches stands astronomically higher at 333.5 million units, according to the research firm. Of course, this is due to the fact that smartphones continue to be one of the most popular devices that make use of OLED panels.

The revenue generated from >10-inch OLED panels shipment during the fast half of 2021 stands at $20.5 billion, which is an increase of 62% from sales of $12.7 billion during the same period of time last year.

Xiaomi CIVI design officially revealed, features curved display & AG glass

Xiaomi has confirmed to launch a new smartphone series called Xiaomi CIVI in China on September 27. As we are only a few days from the announcement, the company has now begun to tease this device. Today, the firm has shared a video and posters revealing the design of the phone. At the same time, a popular leaker has even shared the live images.

Xiaomi CIVI Featured A

According to the official teasers by Xiaomi, the upcoming Xiaomi CIVI will likely compete against the vivo S and the OPPO Reno series of smartphones in China. Just like the handsets from the competition, this one will be also focused on design and camera.

From the video and poster, we can see that the phone has a triangular triple camera array. This camera placement design was popularized by vivo with the launch of the vivo X50 series. Now, even other OEMs like Meizu with its Meizu 18x and Xiaomi have started using this design.

Further, the handset has a curved display and an AG Glass back, which appears to be identical to OPPO Reno Glow design on the OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G. But unlike OPPO, Xiaomi uses a metal frame instead of a plastic frame. Also, the color combination is unique with a gold-colored frame and a blue gradient rear finish.

Talking about placements, the power and volume keys sit on the right side, while the left side has nothing. The bottom of the device includes a USB Type-C port, a speaker grille, a primary microphone hole, and a SIM card slot. Lastly, the top houses a secondary microphone hole, an IR blaster, another speaker grille, and Dolby Atmos branding.

Xiaomi is yet to reveal the features of Xiaomi CIVI yet. However, the firm and Digital Chat Station have confirmed that this smartphone measures 6.98mm in thickness and weighs 166g.

Having said that, we expect the company to drop more teasers revealing the features of this phone every day until the day of the launch on September 27.

Interestingly, the numbers are just the pre-orders received by the third-party e-commerce platforms and don’t include the pre-orders that Apple received directly on its own online store in China. Also, out of those five million pre-orders last Friday, about three million were through JD.com alone.

Some customers were also facing problems when trying to access Apple’s official website in China as the website wasn’t getting loaded properly. Some also started trending hashtags on Weibo relating to Apple’s website being down.

Although the company had planned to start shipping the pre-ordered devices from 24th September, that is no longer the case. With the high demand for new iPhone models, Apple has now shifted the delivery date for new orders from late September to late October.

The newly launched iPhone 13 series is considered to be one of the weakest updates from the technology giant but it’ll still perform quite well, especially in the Chinese market where there’s a gap in the high-end segment after Huawei Technologies is virtually absent from the market because of US-imposed sanctions.

The high demand is also attributed to the lower pricing of the newer models. Apple has priced the iPhone 13 series lower than the iPhone 12 lineup. Prices for the new models in China start at 5,199 yuan (~$804) for the iPhone 13 Mini, 5,999 yuan for the iPhone 13, and 7,999 yuan for the iPhone 13 Pro. This makes the devices about 300 to 800 yuan cheaper than their predecessors.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra to reportedly come with built-in S Pen stylus

Samsung usually launches two flagship smartphone lineups — the Galaxy S-series in the first half of the year and the Galaxy Note series in the second half. However, this time, the company confirmed that it is not launching a Note-series device.

One of the bigger differentiators for the Galaxy Note series has been its S Pen support but that is no longer exclusive as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra also supports S Pen. And now, details about its successor have surfaced online, revealing some interesting things.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Leak

Tipster Ice Universe claims that the Galaxy Note series is gone for good and the upcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra will take its place. It is being said that the phone will look quite similar to the Galaxy Note20 U and will come with a built-in S Pen.

Further, the report adds that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will come with a 19.3:9 aspect ratio display and will be powered by a 5,000mAh battery and is likely to have support for 65W fast charging technology.

Rumors indicate that the phone will have a 6.81-inch LTPO QHD+ screen with 120Hz refresh rate support. Under the hood, the device will be powered by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 chipset. However, in the select markets, the device will also come powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 2200 chipset with AMD mRDNA GPU.

In the camera department, as per the leak, there will be a 108-megapixel primary camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens. It is also expected to have a pair of 10-megapixel telephoto lenses, with one of them being a periscope lens offering 10x optical zoom.

The launch of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup is just a few months away and we expect to know more about the smartphones in the coming weeks and months.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 gets features from Galaxy Z Series with One UI 3.1 update

Even though One UI 3.1.1 is exclusive to the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3, Samsung has decided to backport some features with One UI 3.1 to other devices in its portfolio. Samsung Galaxy S21 series has already received some new features from One UI 3.1.1 and now, it’s time for the Galaxy Tab S7 series to get it.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE

With the new One UI 3.1 build that Samsung has already begun to roll out, Galaxy Tab S7 series tablets will get access to the new Labs feature that was earlier exclusive to One UI 3.1.1 on the Galaxy Z 3 foldable series. The Labs section brings support of multi-window for apps that don’t natively support it, along with a new persistent taskbar that would further enhance productivity.

The multi-window feature makes all the apps open in either pop-up view or split-screen, making it a delight to multitask on the tab. Additionally, with the persistent taskbar, users can now have their favorite apps pinned to it that’d allow them to switch apps without having to go back to the app drawer.

Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+ owners will get the new update that goes by the firmware version T87xXXU2BUC6 and is being rolled out in multiple regions. Galaxy Tab S7 FE isn’t far behind and is also getting the new build with version T73xXXU1AUH6. Users can head to their update centers to find the notification of the new firmware update and in case they don’t see any, fret not, it shouldn’t take long.
