Earlier this month, iQOO unveiled the iQOO 8 and iQOO 8 Pro flagship phones. While the vanilla has the Snapdragon 888 chip, the Pro features the more powerful the Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset. It appears that the iQOO 8 Pro could be heading soon to the global markets as it has appeared on the Google Play Console and Google Supported Devices list.
Android phones that are released in China do not feature Google apps and services. Hence, they do not need any Google certification. The appearance of the iQOO 8 Pro at Google Play Console is a good hint that its global launch is imminent.

At the end of July, Xiaomi started rolling out the MIUI 12.5 update in China. This update is now finally available for Indian versions of this handset called Redmi 9 Prime and POCO M2. Since neither of them got Android 11 like their international counterparts, the new system update also brings last year’s Android for them.
POCO M2
The Redmi 9 Prime sold in India is a rebranded Redmi 9 available elsewhere. On the other hand, the POCO M2 is also basically a Redmi 9 in different colors. Hence, the two smartphones run near identical software and are receiving the latest update together.
The Android 11-based MIUI 12.5 update for the POCO M2 arrives with build number V12.5.1.0.RJRINXM. Whereas, the same update bears build number V12.5.1.0.RJCINXM for the Redmi 9 Prime. Both the builds also come with August 2021 security patches.
Redmi 9 Prime
The latest software builds for these two handsets are being rolled out in batches. Therefore, they might reach some units earlier than others. In simpler words, the update is not available for every user at the moment. However, it should reach all users in the coming days.
Android 11 is the first-ever major Android update for the POCO M2 and the Redmi 9 Prime. We don’t think that these phones will be updated to Android 12. But on the bright side, they could receive MIUI 13 in the future.

A new Huawei patent has just been spotted, which might be for the next gen flagship Mate 50 smartphone. The patented device sports an ‘Arc screen’ with an under display selfie camera.
According to the LetsGoDigitalreport, the Chinese tech giant had filed a new patent with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). Looking at the patent, the smartphone features a curved display that covers the entire front side of the device along with both of its sides. Notably, the Mate 40 Pro last year featured an 88 degree edge to edge display with side touch functionality. Now, it seems that the company might be working on further iterating on this display technology.
As per the patent, the new futuristic smartphone sports an ‘Arc Display,’ which is its most highlighting feature. Furthermore, the screen also curves and reaches till the rear side of the device while the sides offer various touch based functionality as well since there are no side buttons. These functions include the volume rockers along with message notifications that pop up on the side display. Although some of these features are already present in existing Huawei smartphones, the company places an emphasis on the side display functions even more and would likely include new features as well.
Interestingly, Technizo Concept also made a render based on this patent, which showcases the device in a 3D model. A major aspect of the device is that there is no selfie camera visible on the front, which implies that the brand is likely working on offering an under display camera solution. Keep in mind that this is still just a patent and we have no way of knowing whether this is actually the Mate 50 or just the company’s attempt at covering all bases. So stay tuned for more updates.
If there is one thing about Motorola and its naming convention, it is confusing. In March this year, the company announced the Moto G50 5G which bears the codename “Ibiza”. Right now, another smartphone dubbed Moto G50 (5G) codenamed “Saipan” is reportedly in the works. The smartphone has been spotted on the database of benchmarking outfit GeekBench.
Earlier last week renders of the upcoming G50 (5G) codenamed Saipan had leaked revealing the entire design. The GeekBench appearance gives us an idea of some of the key specifications. According to GeekBench, the Moto G50 5G (Saipan) will run on Android 11 OS and will have 4GB of RAM. We expect other RAM options to be available. The G50 (5G) will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset.
While GeekBench details are usually scanty, earlier rumors tip the G50 5G (Saipan) to feature a 6.5-inch HD+ display and will have a 64GB storage option. The device will pack a 48MP triple camera setup at the rear as well as a 13MP selfie camera housed under the waterdrop notch. The phone will also come with NFC support and has a 3.5mm audio jack.
Moto G50 5G (Saipan) GeekBench
In addition, Brazil’s Anatel listing also shows the G50 5G (Saipan) will cram a decent 4,700 mAh battery under the hood. The phone will also have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and will charge via a USB-C port.
There is no word yet on when the device will launch but we expect Motorola to reveal the launch date soon.
As expected, Realme has today launched its latest entry-level smartphone under its C-series for the Indian market, dubbed Realme C21Y. The phone was first launched in Vietnam last month.
It features a 6.5-inch HD+ display offering a screen resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels and an aspect ratio of 20:9. There’s also a water-drop notch on top of the display for housing the front-facing camera sensor.
Under the hood, the device is powered by a Unisoc T610 octa-core processor which is not something that you usually get in the Indian market. However, Unisoc has partnered with brands like Micromax, Realme, and Motorola to bring devices powered by its processors in the Indian market, so expect more Unisoc-powered phones in the market.
This processor isn’t a major upgrade compared to the MediaTek Helio G35 packed in the Realme C21 but it’s a bit more powerful. The device comes packed with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot that allows you to further expand the storage capacity.
In the camera department, you get a triple-camera setup on the back consisting of a 13-megapixel primary sensor, a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro lens. On the front side, there’s a 5-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.
Connectiivty-wise, it comes with the usual set of features, including 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5, GPS/AGPS/GLONASS/, and MicroUSB. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device also has a fingerprint sensor on the back panel for added security.
The smartphone is running the Android 11 operating system with the Realme UI custom user interface on top. It is powered by a 5,000mAh battery and is claimed by the company to offer all-day usage with a single charge.
The Realme C21Y comes in two color options in the Indian market — Cross Black and Cross Blue. The 3GB RAM with 32GB storage model is priced at ₹8,999 (~$121) while the 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage model costs ₹9,999, about $135. The phone will be available for purchase through Realme.com, Flipkart, and Offline Stores across the country starting from 30th August.
A few days back, Xiaomi announced that it has been India’s largest smartphone brand for the last 4 years. Today, the company says that it is the country’s largest online smartphone brand in the ₹20K-₹45K price segment.
According to a tweet by Xiaomi India, the company is India’s no. 1 online smartphone brand in the ₹20K-₹45K price segment. The image shared by the firm says that the data comes from the June 2021 India Smartphone Monthly Model Tracker by Counterpoint Research.
This means Xiaomi was probably the largest online smartphone brand in the upper mid-range to premium segment in India in the month of June. It might have continued through July but we don’t have data for the same.
The company sells five different smartphone models in the said price segment. These are Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, Mi 11 Lite, Mi 10i, Mi 11X, and Mi 11X Pro. Although the firm does not mention it, we think most of the sales numbers could have come from the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max.
Anyway, it’s still an achievement for a brand, which is associated with cheap affordable devices. Perhaps, this will consider Xiaomi to bring more upper mid-range smartphones to India.
Do you think Xiaomi India can continue this moment going forward? Do let us know in the comment section below.

Fitness trackers were one of the first products behind the popularity of wearable devices. While smartwatches are now taking over, fitness trackers still have the majority of the portion in the market share and Fitbit remains its leader.
After launching the Fitbit Charge 4 last year in March, the company is now gearing up to launch its successor in the market, dubbed Fitbit Charge 5. Ahead of the launch, some details about the upcoming wearable product have leaked online.
From the leaked renders, it looks like Fitbit will be overhauling the design of the Charge 5 fitness tracker. The company is moving away from the rugged look and the upcoming product has adopted curved edges with soft angles and a smoother-looking strap.
Also, instead of the monochrome screen in the past models, the upcoming model will be featuring a color display. Currently, not much is known about the hardware specifications of the Fitbit Charge 5 but it’s revealed to have an optical heart rate sensor and a SpO2 sensor for blood oxygen content.
It could also come with support for GPS to enable location tracking and Fitbit’s favorite EDA for stress measurement. There’s also a possibility of an ECG sensor for monitoring heart rhythm and warn users of potential arrhythmia problems.
The device will also include a premium subscription that offers personalized exercise recommendations and suggests times for resting and recovering with guided meditations and sleep tracking.
The leak also claims that the device will be available for purchase for the price of $179. The launch date is not yet known but going by the leaked images, which show the “23 Oct” date, it’s likely that the Fitbit Charge 5 will be made official on 23rd October.

Last week, it unveiled the Galaxy A52s 5G in the U.K. India is one of the markets that will be receiving the smartphone since its support page had gone live on Samsung India’s website earlier this month. Fresh information shared by a tipster reveals that the India launch of the Galaxy A52s 5G could be close at hand.
In the below-shown tweet, tipster Debayan Roy shared an image of the Galaxy A52s 5G’s poster and claimed that the company has started sending its posters to retail stores in India. The text that can be seen at the bottom-left of the image hints that the device will be heading to India.

The poster shows the Galaxy A52s 5G sporting a centrally aligned punch-hole display. A quad-camera setup can be seen on the backside of the device. The image reveals that the handset will arrive in at least black and white colors in the Indian market.

Last month, we reported that Chinese smartphone brands Vivo and OPPO are working on their own in-house ISP chips. Now, more details about the upcoming chip have surfaced, along with information about the first smartphone packing it.
As per the latest report, Vivo’s first self-developed ISP chip, which is codenamed “Yueying,” could be made official next month, i.e., September 2021. It is also being reported that the upcoming Vivo X70 series could become the first devices to pack this new chip.
Vivo seems to be quite focused on developing its own chips as the company is planning to have a team of around 500-600 members in this department, claimed Hu Baishan, Executive Vice President at Vivo. In September 2019, while acknowledging the company’s plan of making its own chips, he added that Vivo started thinking about it in 2018.
The company is also looking to hire several new team members of the chip division for Research & Development and is willing to pay them handsomely, at least that’s what the report from ITHome indicates.
So far, we are aware of two chip-related trademarks from the company — Vivo SoC and Vivo Chip. The product categories covered by these two trademarks include central processing units, modems, computer chips, printed circuits, and computer storage.
Vivo has also planned to invest a huge amount in the Research & Development of 5G, Artificial Intelligence, and other emerging technologies. Its sister company OPPO is also developing its own chip which is expected to release with the Find X4 smartphone early next year. OPPO‘s chip development team has about 1,000 members.
Another Chinese brand, Xiaomi has already launched its first self-developed ISP chip named Surge C1 and is packed in the company’s first foldable smartphone — Mi MIX Fold which was launched last year.
The development of making their own chips seems like a precautionary move since Chinese companies are now investing more to become self-reliant after China-based tech giant Huawei was put on the “Entity List” by the United States. It effectively banned the company from doing business or procuring components from US-based companies.
Samsung has been doubling down on foldable smartphones and in line with that, the South Korean tech giant recently announced its two new devices — Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3.
The devices have not been on sale yet but are available for pre-orders and it seems that the company has a winner on its hand after the disappointing sales of Galaxy S-series flagship smartphones in the past couple of years.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3
A new report citing industry sources claims that the two newly launched foldable smartphones from Samsung have already crossed the mark of 450,000 units in pre-orders, which started on 17th August and will end today, i.e. 23rd August.
It’s being speculated that the total number of pre-orders could reach 600,000 units and if the unlocked models are also included, then the numbers may even reach 800,000 units. Just to give you perspective, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 had 80,000 units in pre-sale.
The popularity of these new foldable smartphones from Samsung is high among young customers, which isn’t surprising. Based on the numbers from a mobile operator, around 49 percent of Galaxy Z Fold3 books are from customers aged in their 20s and 30s. As for the Galaxy Z Flip3, they account for about 57 percent of the pre-orders.
Samsung has been betting on its foldable smartphone lineup to defend its position as the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer, which is now under a serious threat from Chinese smartphone makers like Xiaomi.
So far, it seems that the strategy of the South Korean giant is working as intended. Samsung is the only major smartphone brand with multiple generations of foldable smartphone models already in the market while most other phone makers are yet to launch their first foldable device.
