TCL Technology to supply OLED panels for smartphones to Samsung

Last year, Samsung sold its LCD production line in Suzhou to TCL Technology and the South Korean giant also acquired a stack in the Chinese company. Now, it appears that both the companies are taking their relationship to the next level.

As per the reports, TCL will now be supplying OLED panels for smartphones to Samsung Electronics. This is surprising given that Samsung has so far relied on its own subsidiary for the display panel needs.

The development was first reported by DigiTimes and was later confirmed by another report from China Securities Journal which claims that “TCL China Star will be supplying OLED panels for smartphones to Samsung Electronics.”

This isn’t the first time TCL will be a supplier for Samsung but it marks the first time TCL supplying OLED panels to Samsung for its smartphones. TCL is also providing more than 15 percent of Samsung’s LCD panel requirements for Smart TVs and the South Korean giant is its second-largest customer.

Last week, announcing its financial results for the first half of this year, TCL Technology revealed its operating income at 74.299 billion yuan, which represents an increase of 153.29 percent year-on-year. The company added that its entire OLED shipments in the first half of this year have exceeded that of the last year and its market share also increased, resulting in it taking the fourth position globally.

Design

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 has a more impressive design because it is built with more premium materials. It has a sturdy ceramic back, an aluminum frame, and a front glass protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, as well as the IP53 certification making it dust resistant and splash proof. The ZTE Axon 30 5G is an affordable flagship and the materials are one of its compromises. It has a glass back and a plastic frame, but it is very thin and pretty lightweight, while Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is thicker and heavier. Besides the under-screen camera, these phones feature in-display fingerprint readers for authentication.

Display

The ZTE Axon 30 5G has an amazing display, but it can not compete with the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4. The latest Xiaomi innovative flagship has an AMOLED panel that is able to show up to one billion colors. It has a 120 Hz refresh rate, the HDR10+ certification, and Dolby Vision, as well as an 800 nit brightness. You can see up to one billion colors with the ZTE Axon 30 5G as well and it also comes with a 120 Hz refresh rate, but it does not have the advanced certifications of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4. Both the phones have an in-display fingerprint reader and a Full HD+ resolution.

Specs & Software

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is a way more powerful phone thanks to its stronger chipset and better memory configurations. It is powered by the Snapdragon 888+ mobile platform paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. The ZTE Axon 30 5G is equipped with a Snapdragon 870 SoC, 12 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of native storage in the most expensive configuration. While the Snapdragon 888+ is currently the best Qualcomm chipset, the Snapdragon 870 has a third place. Note that ZTE Axon 30 5G has a micro SD slot, while Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 does not.

Camera

Despite the lower amount of cameras, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is a superior camera phone. It has a 108 MP main camera which supports 8K video recording, OIS and laser autofocus, an 8 MP periscope telephoto sensor with OIS and 5x optical zoom, and a 13 MP ultrawide sensor. While the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is one of the best camera phones of the year, the ZTE Axon 30 5G provides midrange-class camera performance with its 64 MP quad camera.

Battery

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 has a bigger battery with a capacity of 4600 mAh, and it is able to provide a longer battery life on a single charge. It also supports faster wired charging with a power of 120W. Last but not least, it supports fast wireless charging with a max power of 50W. ZTE Axon 30 5G has a smaller battery and it only supports 55W fast charging (wired).

Price

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 debuted in China with a starting price of €660/$777, while ZTE Axon 30 5G carries a starting price tag of about €290/$342. We still do not know whether or not the Mix 4 will hit the global shelves, while ZTE Axon 30 5G will be available globally starting from September 9 for €500. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is the winner of this comparison, but you can save a lot of money with the Axon 30 5G.

Earlier this year, Vivo’s subsidiary iQOO launched the iQOO 7 series featuring flagship specs at an affordable price. Now, just after 8 months of its release, the Chinese phone maker is slated to launch its successor dubbed iQOO 8.

The smartphone arrived in the leaks a few times and it was only recently when iQOO officially started teasing the device. Amidst these leaks, iQOO confirmed the launch of the device for August 17 in China. Today, we’re rounding up all the details we’ve learned so far about the upcoming iQOO 8 series.

iQOO 8 Rumor Roundup: What to Expect?

The iQOO 8 series was first surfaced last month where the company posted a teaser for the phone’s launch. It confirmed the moniker of the smartphone and also enticed all the iQOO fans around the world. Soon after its first leak, the phone was teased at the ChinaJoy 2021 event held late last month.

Display and Design

As of now, it is confirmed that iQOO will launch two devices in the series – the iQOO 8 and iQOO 8 Pro. Both phones will boast similar designs and the overall look is expected to be identical to the predecessor iQOO 7.

According to a teaser, the smartphones will feature a punch-hole display panel that will sport a high 120Hz refresh rate. Now, a freshly leaked image straight from the iQOO has surfaced online which meticulously revealed entire display details.

The iQOO 8 Pro is expected to feature a 6.78-inch Samsung E5 LTPO display panel with a 10-bit color depth. The screen is touted to have support for 2K resolution. On the other hand, the iQOO 8 is expected to feature a smaller 6.56-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 92.76 % screen-to-body ratio.

Cameras on the iQOO 8 series

Moving to the cameras, the smartphone series is expected to feature a triple rear camera system and a single front camera setup. The rear camera system of the Pro model will be led by a 50MP primary lens, a 48MP ultra-wide sensor, and lastly a 16MP telephoto sensor. iQOO teased that the phone will come with Vivo’s VIS five-axis stabilization for videos.

The vanilla iQOO 8 is touted to come with the same triple camera system with a 48MP main sensor, and two 13MP lenses for ultra-wide and portrait shots.

Hardware and Software

iQOO 8 series is rumored to come powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ chipset. Recently, the Pro model appeared on the Geekbench portal where the phone scored a whopping 1118 single-points and 3572 multicore points. It was seen in two configurations – 8GB LPDDR5 RAM + 256GB UFS 3.1 storage variant and 12GB LPDDR5 RAM + 512GB UFS 3.1 storage variant. It will run on Android 11 out of the box.

iQOO 8

The smartphone series just appeared on China’s 3C confirming the phone’s 120W flash charging feature. It is also touted to have a 4,500mAh battery phone with 50W wireless and 10W reverse wireless charging support.

Moreover, the iQOO 8 is expected to have an optical fingerprint scanner, whereas, the Pro model is touted to feature an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

Pricing, color variants, and availability
