Xiaomi exec suggests the Mix 4 UD camera won’t give a spectacular selfie experience

The selfie camera has been hugely popular among smartphone users. Several other accessories like the selfie stick, have been developed in combination with the selfie cam for an enhanced photo and video recording experience. However, smartphone camera technology is a fast-evolving field that has thrown up under-display cameras as the new direction for front cameras. A few devices in the market have this new technology, and the Xiaomi Mix 4, just released this week, is one of such.Xiaomi Mix 4

A Weibo post by a Xiaomi Executive has thrown more light on the Mix 4’s selfie camera. Senior Vice President at Xiaomi, William Lu, in the Weibo post, highlighted the strong points of the Mix 4, which sports an under-display front camera module, to be the full-screen display. Lu says that the Mix 4 lacks a punch hole, stressing that phones with punch holes offer more satisfaction for selfie enthusiasts. The Mix 4, on the other hand, offers a bigger screen and a more immersive display experience.

In other words, if you are a selfie enthusiast, the MIX 4 may not be for you. Recall that the ZTE Axon 20 was the first smartphone to feature a UD camera technology. The device really didn’t offer an impressive selfie experience but the Axon 30 released this year came with some improvement in that aspect. Since the Mix 4 is Xiaomi’s first attempt at UD camera technology, we expect some improvements un subsequent smartphones. .

The camera technology deployed in Mix 4 is called Camera Under Panel (CUP), and it offers a full screen for front shots. The under-display technology is still in a state of rapid development, and we are bound to see further innovations in this regard. Several OEMs are actively developing their own versions (some with patents) of the under-display camera setup.

Samsung increases the trade-in limit to 4 devices for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3

Samsung trade-ins, especially for the US have been great. In the trade-in offer, buyers get an option to trade their existing smartphone for a brand new Galaxy device in return for some credits. These credits get deducted on your purchase making the new device even more affordable. So far, Samsung has allowed a single or two devices for the trade-in. Now, after the launch of the new Galaxy foldables, Samsung has bumped the limit to 4 devices.

Now, you can shelve off 4 devices for a brand new Galaxy Z Fold 3 or a Galaxy Z Flip 3. This is a great offer for those looking to clear the clutter of old smartphones. It is worth noting that the 4 devices limit is only for the new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 and it is currently available while you pre-order the phones.

Samsung increases the trade-in limit to 4 devices for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3

Although you’ll be trading in up to 4 devices at once, there’s a maximum limit set by Samsung. For the Galaxy Z Fold 3, users can avail of up to $800 trade-in value, while those pre-ordering the Z Flip 3 can avail of up to $650 trade-in value. Not just smartphones, buyers can also trade a tablet or a smartwatch while pre-ordering.

Honor Magic 3 series will receive two Android OS updates, confirms Honor CEO

Yesterday, Honor announced the much-awaited Honor Magic 3 series of flagship phones such as Magic 3, Magic 3 Pro, and Magic 3 Pro+. It was widely reported that the Magic 3 models will receive only one major OS update. Fresh information reveals that Honor CEO George Zhao has confirmed to Android Authority that these phones will receive at least two Android OS upgrades.

The Magic 3 series will come preinstalled with Android 11 OS and Magic UI 5.0. It will also offer Google Mobile Services, which will give access to Play Store and other Google apps. The company is yet to reveal the global availability of the Magic 3 series.

Honor Magic 3 Pro+

Several reports had claimed that the Magic 3 series will come equipped with an under-display selfie camera. However, none of the Magic 3 models have the next-generation selfie camera tech. After the Magic 3 launch event, Zhao claimed that light transmittance during selfies and video calls is the biggest challenge with the under-screen camera technology. In its research, the company found that many image effects are unacceptable in some blacklight situations. Hence, it decided to not include the under-display camera on the Magic 3 series after a thorough evaluation.

In related news, Zhao said that Honor has resumed business in more than 50 countries across the world and the company will focus on recovering its business in the overseas market this year. The Honor 50 series that debuted a few months back in China will be available in more than 3 countries, and it will be launching more products in the global markets in the future. He also confirmed that the Honor phones arriving in the overseas markets will feature Google Mobile Services.

Honor offline sales account for over 70% of company’s total sales: CEO George Zhao

At its recent launch event, the China-based Honor, which became an independent brand splitting from Huawei earlier this year, launched its new devices, including the Honor Magic 3 series flagship smartphones and Honor Tab V7 Pro.

Just after the launch event, in an interview, George Zhao, CEO of Honor, revealed that the offline sales for the company accounted for more than 70 percent of its overall sale. This is quite an interesting development given that Honor mostly positions its devices in the mid-range segment and it was the leading company for online sales in China.

Honor Store

Given that majority of the company’s sales are now through offline stores, George Zhao says that Honor will now be speeding up the work of expanding the brand’s footprints in the offline market.

During its peak, Honor-branded smartphones accounted for about 16.7 percent of the market share in China. However, it fell to about 3 percent in the first quarter of 2021, just as the company split from Huawei.

However, the company has now returned to the top three list of smartphone manufacturers in its home country China, with a market share of 14.6 percent. Not just China, Honor has also resumed business operations in about 50 countries around the world and is now focusing on recovering the lost market share.

Zhao acknowledges that the overseas market share of Honor has dropped to almost zero but the company is now hoping for a V-shaped recovery. The company has launched promising new devices and with more products in the pipeline, there’s a possibility that Honor could bring back the days of glory that it once witnessed, before the United States imposed sanctions on Huawei. We’ll just have to wait and watch.

iQOO 8 series will feature a 120W flash charging, while the Pro gets 50W wireless & 10W reverse charging

A raft of details has been released relating to the iQOO 8 series which will be launched on August 17. According to a recent teaser poster released by Vivo, all the models in the iQOO 8 series will come with support for a 120W ultra-fast flash charging, which is a first by the company. In addition, the flagship iQOO 8 Pro will have 50W wireless flash charging and 10W reverse charging, another first for the company.iQOO 8 Pro

A new render released today has also provided further illumination on the iQOO 8 Pro’s beautiful white and BMW-themed sports design. The render also showed the under-display rear camera setup. Some pricing information is also available for the iQOO 8 Pro, as its price has been put at 5,299 yuan (~$818), although several key details are still lacking for the device.

iQOO debuted 120W flash charging in 2020 for its flagship iQOO 5 Pro, while this was absent in the lower models of the series. Therefore, the decision to extend 120W flash charging to all the models in the 2021 8 Series lineup is impressive. Further charging functionality is given to the 8 Pro, with 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging. The reverse wireless charging functionality makes it possible to use the iQOO 8 Pro to charge some devices under certain conditions.

The iQOO 8 Pro will come with a Snapdragon 888+ processor and a 2K resolution screen. It is still unclear at this time whether there is a global rollout for the device to other countries. Some of the fine details will become known as we inch closer to the August 17 launch date for the iQOO 8 series.

How the S Pen Fold Edition differs from the S Pen Pro

Following the launch of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the first Galaxy S phone to have S Pen support, earlier this year, Samsung revealed its plans to bring the S Pen to more Galaxy devices. It delivered on that promise this week when it launched the Galaxy Z Fold3 with S Pen support, and just like the S21 Ultra, this too has support for two types of S Pens.

S Pen Fold Edition vs S Pen Pro featured
S Pen Fold Edition (L) and S Pen Pro (R)

There is the S Pen Fold Edition and the S Pen Pro which was revealed earlier this year but just launched this week. If you are wondering how the two styluses differ, then you are at the right place.

S Pen Fold Edition

The S Pen Fold Edition is designed to work only with the Galaxy Z Fold3. This is because of its nib that has been specially designed to work with the foldable display of the phone.

S Pen Fold Edition

The stylus has a slim 1.5mm pen tip and a built-in spring that takes the impact when you press it against the display. It has 4096 pressure levels and also has support for Air Command. The S Pen Fold Edition doesn’t have Bluetooth, so there is no need to pair it with the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G. This also means that you can’t use it as a remote for the phone. It also doesn’t have a battery, thus doesn’t need to be charged.

The S Pen Fold Edition weighs 6.7 grams and measures 132.1 mm in length and 7.7mm in diameter.

S Pen Pro

The S Pen Pro works with most Samsung devices (phones, tablets, and computers) that have support for the S Pen including the new Galaxy Z Fold3. It is not only longer and thicker at 173.64 millimeters and 9.5 millimeters respectively but also weighs more than double the S Pen Fold Edition at 13.8 grams.

It has Bluetooth for connecting to not just one device but multiple devices with support for seamless switching between devices. Owners will even be able to copy, cut, and paste across devices (phone to tablet to PC) provided they are logged in to the same Samsung account, on the same Wi-Fi network, and have Bluetooth and Continue turned on.

Another key feature it has is that if you misplace the S Pen Pro, you will be able to find it by checking its location using the SmartThings app.

Last but not least is the price tag. The S Pen Pro is priced at $99.99, double the $49.99 price of the S Pen Fold Edition.

Apple reportedly in talks with Korean partners for the Apple car

The rumors about an Apple car in the making have been on for some time, although there had not been any definitive statement or even a tipster’s leak that indicates that the famed Apple car is ready to move out of the drawing board. Apple has however continued to expand its fleet of self-driving electric vehicles under testing in California. The news emanating from South Korea is that Apple has had some discussions with its business partners and possible producers of EV components in Korea.Apple

The news was highlighted in the Korea Times and specifically mentioned that Apple had talks outside the iPhone engagements it has had in recent times with some of its partners in Korea. Some of the companies mentioned in the talks were LG Electronics, SK Innovation, and Hanwa. Note that SK Innovation is the EV-battery-making arm of the SK Group.

Samsung has also had talks previously with several automakers, and it is believed that further talks took place with Hyundai/Kia, Nissan, and a few other automakers. No public statement is however available to ascertain whether indeed talks were held, as none of the companies mentioned have put out any statement debunking or affirming the claim.

It would be really interesting to see Apple come up with its own car. Little is also known about the purpose of the electric vehicle development by Apple. We cannot say whether the car is for commercial production or something else. If indeed Apple is pursuing the development of electric vehicles, there are no timelines or milestones available for the project. We do not know whether we are close to the eventual launch of the Apple car.

Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro vs Honor Tab V7 Pro: Specs Comparison

This is the year of flagship tablets. Due to the pandemic, a lot of people chose to buy a new tablet in order to survive the lockdown while still having entertainment, study or work with the maximum comfort. That is why several companies released flagship tablets in the Android market. Even Xiaomi came back to the tablet market: the Chinese giant released the Mi Pad 5 and the Mi Pad 5 Pro with flagship-class specifications. Right after, Honor released the Tab V7 Pro, another flagship tablet with specifications for power users.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES Dual SIM slot, optional LTE and 5G, pen support 5G, pen support, keyboard support

Design

Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro and Honor Tab V7 Pro brought a great design to the market. They come with an plastic body and a  very high screen to body ratio thanks to narrow bezels around the display. You can use them as laptops thanks to the support of a keyboard and advanced multi-tasking features such as split-screen, multi-window, and more. They both support a stylus, as well as a nano-SIM which brings 5G support. Note that there is also a variant of the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 with WiFi only.

Display

The most advanced display belongs to the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro. The tablet is equipped with an IPS panel showing up to one billion colors. It has a Quad HD+ resolution of 1600 x 2560 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz, the HDR10 certification, and Dolby Vision. The Honor Tab V7 Pro has a Quad HD+ resolution as well, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a great contrast, but it comes with 16M colors only. Note that Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro has a slightly wider display with a diagonal of 11.5 inches.

Specs & Software

The Honor Tab V7 Pro is the first tablet powered by the MediaTek Kompanio 1300T mobile platform, paired with up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of native storage. Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro has the same memory configuration in the most advanced variant, but it is powered by a stronger Snapdragon 870 chipset. The Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro is able to provide higher performance if you consider that Kompanio 1300T is less powerful than Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1200 is inferior to the Snapdragon 870 as well. The tablets run Android 11 out of the box, customized by MIUI and Magic UI, respectively.

Camera

The most advanced variant of the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro sports a dual camera setup with a 50 MP main sensor and an ultrawide 5 MP camera. But if you choose lower-end variants of the tablet, you get a 13 + 5 MP dual camera. There is a big difference between these versions because the 50 MP camera is way better than a 13 MP one. In each configuration, Honor Tab V7 Pro has a dual camera including a 13 MP main sensor and a 2 MP macro camera.

Battery

The Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro is equipped with a battery coming with a capacity of 8600 mAh and it supports 67W fast charging: the fastest charging technology in the Android market. With the Honor Tab V7 Pro, you get a 7250 mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging. The Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro should provide a longer battery life due to its bigger battery.

Price

The Honor Tab V7 Pro comes in three configurations: the base variant with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage costs €342/$401 in China,  the 8/128 GB version costs $432, and the 8/256 GB version costs $571. Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro has a starting price tag of €330/$387. Which tablet is the best at the end of the day? In my honest opinion, the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro is superior. It has a great display showing up to one billion colors, a faster charging technology, a better chipset, and even a much better camera if you choose the most expensive configuration. The Honor Tab V7 Pro is still an amazing choice, especially because it has a very high value for money.

India to get a special Chromecast with Google TV

The Chromecast with Google TV streaming dongle was announced last year. The device is sold in multiple countries, but if you live in India, you can’t get your hands on one as Google didn’t launch it there. And it appears it has no plans to do so. However, a new leak has revealed that India will be getting a special Chromecast With Google TV.

Chromecast with Google TV

The info was revealed by the YouTuber Ustav Techie on Twitter earlier today. According to him, Google is bringing three new products to India. First, he mentions the Google Nest is coming this year but doesn’t specify which Nest product. However, we found out that the Google India store already lists the new Nest Cam (Battery) as coming soon. So this might be the product he is referring to.

Next on the list is the Pixel Buds. Google already discontinued the Pixel Buds, so this is most likely the $99 Pixel Buds A announced in June.

Last is the special Chromecast with Google TV made for India. There are no details about this device and what makes it different from the model released last year. However, there seems to be some truth to the statement considering that a new Google streaming device was recently approved by the FCC.

The leaker also mentioned that Google is still undecided about the Pixel 6 coming to India but mentions in the replies that the Pixel 5a will not be launched in the country.

We expect more details about the launch and features of these new devices will surface in the weeks leading up to their launch, so keep your eyes peeled.

Honor Watch GS 3 unveiled: boasts an 8-channel PPG sensor for better heart rate measurement

Honor has a new smartwatch but you can’t get your hands on it now because it is sort of not official yet. The new smartwatch is called the Honor Watch GS 3 (there wasn’t a GS 2) and Honor only briefly talked about its new heart rate sensor at its launch event today.

Honor Watch GS 3 featured

The highlight of the Honor Watch GS 3 is its 8-channel PPG sensor which also uses an AI algorithm and AI Engine to accurately measure heart rate. As shown in the image below, the heart rate module includes an 8-channel PPG module, a heart rate AI Engine, a frequency tracking algorithm, and an AI heart rate algorithm. Honor says they all work together to capture your heart rate data faster and more accurately.

There is no comparison, so we can’t say how well this compares to other heart rate sensors. We hope more details will be revealed in the near future.

The Honor Watch GS 3 itself has a round dial attached to a metal case. It has two physical buttons and uses quick-release straps. It will be available in three variants – there is Voyager which has a silver case and blue leather straps, Streamer Classic with a golden case and brown leather straps, and Racing Edition with a gray case and black rubber straps.

We do not know when the watch will be properly launched but we still expect it to arrive this year.

HONOR Magic3, Magic3 Pro, Magic3 Pro+ launched: Specs, Price, & Availability

HONOR has officially launched the HONOR Magic3 series as scheduled. These new devices are the company’s first flagship smartphone lineup after being sold off by HUAWEI. The series includes a total of three models, namely HONOR Magic3, HONOR Magic3 Pro, and HONOR Magic3 Pro+ (aka HONOR Magic 3 Zhen Edition). Let’s take a look at what these HUAWEI Mate40 series lookalike phones have to offer.

HONOR Magic3, Magic3 Pro, Magic3 Pro+ Specifications and Features

All three smartphones sport a 6.76-inch 10-bit 89°curved OLED display with a resolution of 2772 × 1344 pixels (FHD+), 1.07 billion colors, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, 120Hz refresh rate, and a pill-shaped cutout for front-facing cameras.

Their design is similar to that of the HUAWEI Mate40 series with a circular camera ring. In fact, the HONOR Magic3 Pro+ reminds us off PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate40 RS.

The vanilla model is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB/256GB storage. Whereas, the two Pro models feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ chipset and it is coupled with 8GB/12GB RAM and 128GB/256GB/512GB storage.

The standard HONOR Magic3 comes in four colors (Golden Hour, Blue Hour, Black, White), while the Pro comes in three (Golden Hour, Black, White), and the Pro Plus in only two color options (White, Black). The colors with ‘Hour’ in their names feature a leather finish, whereas the Pro Plus has a ceramic back and the remaining have a glass back.

These phones run Magic UI 5.0 based on Android 11. In global markets, they will ship with GMS (Google Mobile Services). Hence, buyers need not worry about the availability of apps and services.

Talking about cameras, all three phones feature a 13MP front-facing camera. Additionally, the Pro and the Pro Plus also come with a 3D camera for a face authentication system.

Here is how much the Honor Magic Floating Keyboard Case and Magic-Pencil 2 costs

Honor announced a new flagship tablet today. Called the Honor Tab V7 Pro, it is the first device to be powered by the MediaTek Kompanio 1300T chipset. Alongside the tablet, Honor also announced two accessories for the tablet – the Honor Magic Floating Keyboard Case and the Magic-Pencil 2 stylus. Here are their features and price tags:

Honor Magic Floating Keyboard Case featured

Honor Magic Floating Keyboard Case

The Honor Magic Floating Keyboard Case might as well be the best of keyboard cases from a Chinese manufacturer, at least compared to that of Xiaomi’s Mi Pad 5 series and that of the Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 but it is also the most expensive of the three.

The keyboard case has a floating design like that of the iPad Pro’s Magic Keyboard. When attached, the tablet can be adjusted between 90º and 120°. Unlike the Mi Pad 5’s keyboard case, there is a trackpad and it supports gestures. Users will be able to switch between open apps and windows, enter multi-tasking mode, and return to the desktop all with a three-finger gesture.

Another interesting feature of the keyboard case is a garage for the Magic-Pencil 2. This garage not only stores the stylus but also charges it. Other features of the keyboard case include a 1.3mm key travel and a dedicated microphone button for voice-to-text dictation in multiple languages including English.

The Honor Magic Floating Keyboard Case is priced at ¥799 (~$123) which is significantly higher than the ¥499 (~$77) Lenovo charges for its own keyboard case and the ¥399 (~$62) price tag of the Mi Pad 5’s own keyboard case.

Honor Magic-Pencil 2

Honor Magic-Pencil 2

The Honor Magic-Pencil 2 is the companion stylus for the Honor Tab V7 Pro tablet. It has a cylindrical design with a replaceable nib and comes in black. It costs ¥499 (~$77), making it more expensive than the ¥299 (~$47) Xiaoxin Active Capacitive Pen and the ¥349 (~$54) Mi Pad Stylus.

The stylus has 4096-levels of pressure sensitivity, 8ms latency, and a battery life that goes up to 15 hours. Users will be able to charge it by placing it on top of the Honor V7 Pro or inside the garage of the keyboard case. A full charge takes 1 hour. Honor also says that the Magic-Pencil 2 can be connected to up to four Honor V7 Pro tablets at the same time.

The Honor Magic-Pencil 2 is also compatible with the Honor V6 tablet.
