OnePlus reveals that second OnePlus Nord 2 Blast case was fake

Earlier this month, a Twitter user named Ankur Sharma shared images of his burnt OnePlus Nord 2 smartphone. Soon after the tweet, OnePlus was kind enough to respond to the user by helping him with the further doings. The Chinese manufacturer also revealed that the blast was caused solely due to external factors and there weren’t any manufacturing defects.

Just Yesterday, another Twitter user named Shubham Srivastava shared that his father’s OnePlus Nord 2 unit exploded. But, thankfully, it didn’t cause any harm. Now, OnePlus has officially confirmed that the second incident reported by Srivastava was fake.

Second OnePlus Nord 2 Blast case(tweet deleted)

OnePlus shared a statement regarding the second blase case.

“Earlier today, we were notified on Twitter about an alleged blast case for the OnePlus Nord 2. We always take such claims very seriously and immediately look into each one to first verify the legitimacy of the claim. During our conversation with this individual, we were able to confirm that this alleged case was false and in no way involved any OnePlus product. All OnePlus products undergo thorough quality and safety tests to ensure that they are up to leading industry standards and are safe to use”, stated OnePlus.

In continuation, “We also follow strict internal processes to ensure the health and safety of our users, while also protecting the reputation of our brand. We urge the public to exercise restraint in judging unverified allegations such as this.”

Although the second incident was fake, the first blast case still remains to be true. Also, it is worth noting that several other phones from big brands have been subject to such blasts. Either due to battery issues or due to some manufacturing defects.

Amazon and GoPro file lawsuit against Chinese sellers over counterfeit products

Knockoffs are a huge problem plaguing online marketplaces like Amazon and to tackle such issues, the online retail giant had created a Counterfeit Crimes Unit in June last year. Now, the unit seems to have taken its first action.

Amazon and GoPro have sued seven Chinese nationals and a couple of businesses for distributing hard-to-detect knockoffs of its “Handler” floating camera handgrip and “3-way” tripod grip that uses GoPro’s own logo.

GoPro Hero9 Featured

The lawsuit was filed in April this year and has just been unsealed because a parallel investigation against the same sellers is ongoing in China. The lawsuit claims that some of the buyers were fooled by the fake products but it doesn’t reveal the number of people who actually bought these fake products.

As for taking action, Amazon says that it blocked the seller accounts of these defendants after counterfeits were brought to the company’s attention. The company also added that it sent samples of the products to GoPro to help the investigation.

Kebharu Smith, Director of Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit said, “When counterfeiters attempt to sell in our store, they not only violate the intellectual property rights of companies like GoPro, they also mislead consumers and harm Amazon’s reputation as a place to buy authentic goods.”

Amazon contends that the problem of counterfeit products on its platform isn’t widespread. It says that in 2020, less than 0.01 percent of all products sold on its marketplace were the subject of a counterfeit complaint from customers. But Amazon doesn’t reveal how many products it has on its storefront, so it’s impossible to tell how large “0.01%” might be.

The company is talking about counterfeit complaints filed by the customers so the number of such products on the platform could be much more given that not everyone can tell apart the fake goods and not everyone who finds out decides to complain about it.

Honor Magic 3 will be the first smartphone to feature IMAX Enhanced!

Honor is scheduled to have an extended launch of several products on August 12. This has seen the release of several official teasers and specs sheet for some of these devices, as the company ups the tempo leading to the event. We expect to see more of these teasers and new details ahead of the scheduled August 12 event.

The Honor Magic 3 is one of the devices primed for launch on August 12, and Honor has released an announcement via Weibo that it is partnering with proprietary camera solutions provider IMAX Corporation in conjunction with DTS.

The partnership is to offer superior video and audio experiences for smartphones via IMAX Enhanced. The new arrangement will see the Honor Magic 3 having the IMAX Enhanced audio and video experience. IMAX Enhanced brings the IMAX capabilities to consumers via TVs and projectors previously. It supports 4K HDR videos with DTS audio on HDR10+ displays. Honor says the Magic 3 will be the first smartphone to have the IMAX Enhanced feature offering an expanded aspect ratio and immersive sound.

The Weibo page also showed a circular camera set up looking like a film reel. This could indicate the circular cam design for the Honor Magic 3. The Honor Magic 3 is powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ chipset, which could provide an indication of an increasing partnership between Honor and chipmaker Qualcomm.

Speculation surrounding the price of the Honor Magic 3 indicates that it could be sold at 4,000 Yuan (~$616), although we expect official pricing information and global availability details before the launch event proper. We also expect the unveiling of a few more devices from the Magic 3 series on August 12.

HP Chromebase is a Chrome OS AiO with a rotating display

There are not a lot of All-in-Ones (AiO) powered by Chrome OS but if you are on the lookout for one, especially for your home, then the new HP Chromebase should be on your radar.

HP Chromebase

The specifications of the HP Chromebase are not bad but the highlight of the computer is its 21.5-inch 1080p IPS touchscreen that can rotate 90º clockwise into a portrait position. The mechanism is so smooth that it can be flipped with just a finger and a little push from the top right corner as seen in a hands-on video by Chrome Unboxed.

You might be wondering why you need your screen in portrait mode, but it turns out that this mode is best for Android apps running on Chrome OS. It is also a more efficient use of the screen when scrolling through a web page or viewing a document as a lot more content fits on the screen compared to when in landscape mode.

The display of the HP Chromebase is attached to a cone-shaped fabric-covered aluminum base that is home to the internals as well as two B&O 5W speakers, two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, and an audio jack. The computer has a starting price of $599 and comes with a Pentium Gold processor for the base model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The pricier models have a 10th Gen Core i3 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage.

There is a 5MP webcam and a shutter at the top allows you to not only cover the camera but also mute the microphone. It also has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. HP ships the Chromebase with a matching white keyboard and mouse and a 90W power adapter.

PUBG is free-to-play for a week; officially changes name to PUBG: Battlegrounds

The popular Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, widely known as PUBG, is going free-to-play for a week. Not just that, the game is also receiving a name change. While the reason behind this has not been revealed by the company, it is being speculated the company is doing this to gauge player interest for turning this into a completely free-to-play game.

The free-to-play week has now been commenced, starting on August 10, and is going to run until August 16. This also coincides with Kpop mega-group Blackpink’s crossover content launching in the game, with decals on the airship and buildings.

PUBG Featured

Krafton, the studio that makes the PUBG game is even giving players some rewards for trying the game out during this promotion. As for the name change, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds will be known as “PUBG: Battlegrounds” going forward, which means the full name of the game is now officially Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds: Battlegrounds.

During this free-play week, rewards can be collected normally and the company has confirmed that mission progress and gameplay statistics will be recorded and put toward achievement progress if players wind up buying the full game.

It’s noteworthy that the promotion is only available on Steam, which means console players will not have access to it. Last month, PUBG got bigger with the launch of a new Taego map which is around 18km by 18km. This is the biggest map in the game for a fair few years, and giving players a vast new area to explore.

Xiaomi gifts all 184K Mi 1 first-time buyers a ¥1999 (~$308) voucher

At the Xiaomi event today, the CEO, Lei Jun, announced that it will be refunding all the first-time buyers of its very first smartphone, the Mi 1, announced 10 years ago.

The manufacturer revealed that it had sold 184,600 units of the smartphone which had a launch price of ¥1999 (~$308). The total revenue generated from the sales was over ¥370 million and that money has helped Xiaomi attain its present-day status as the second-largest phone brand in the world.

Xiaomi Mi 1 refund

As a way to show its appreciation to these early adopters who put their trust in the company, Xiaomi says it is refunding the cost of the phone. However, since refunding each buyer will be too much of a hassle, it has converted the refund into a voucher of the same amount. The voucher can be used towards the purchase of any item on the Xiaomi online store.

The Mi 1 was announced in August 2011. The phone had a 4-inch LCD display, 1GB of RAM, a Snapdragon S3 dual-core processor, a single 8MP rear camera, a 2MP front-facing camera, and a plastic body.

Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro vs iPad Pro 11 2021: Specs Comparison

Xiaomi is finally back in the tablet market with two new devices: the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 and the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro. They are both high-end tablets and perfect rivals for the latest iPad Pro released by Apple, but they come at a more affordable price. Despite that, they pack a great hardware department and a stunning specs sheet: is that enough to beat the latest iPads or you can get more from Apple devices? This comparison will highlight the differences between the specifications of the iPad Pro 11 2021 and the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro.

BATTERY 8600 mAh, fast charging 67W 7538 mAh, fast charging 18W
ADDITIONAL FEATURES Dual SIM slot, optional 5G, pen support LTE, 5G, Pen support, eSIM

Design

The Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro is a very thin and lightweight device with a thickness of just 6.8 mm and a weight of just 515 grams. But the iPad Pro M1 is even thinner and lighter! It weighs just 470 grams and it is 5.9 mm thin: one of the thinnest tablets out there. The devices have a very similar screen-to-body ratio. The iPad Pro M1 wins the design comparison simply because it has a sleeker design. The tablets support both a pen and a physical keyboard you can attach through magnetic connectors. The Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro supports a nano SIM in the 5G variant, while the iPad Pro has both nano SIM and eSIM support.

Display

Apple iPad Pro M1 and Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro are equipped with stunning displays. They have a diagonal of 11 inches, the HDR10 certification, the Dolby Vision standard, a Quad HD+ resolution, and even a 120 Hz refresh rate, as well as a very high brightness. On the other hand, they both come with IPS panels instead of those brilliant AMOLED displays you can usually find on flagship smartphones. But you should not worry so much about it because these tablets have excellent IPS panels. On the iPad Pro, you can authenticate through 3D facial recognition by using Face ID, while you can only rely on the old password if you get the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro.

Specs & Software

Apple iPad Pro M1 and Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro are equipped with flagship-class hardware. The iPad Pro M1 has the same processor as the latest iMacs: the custom Apple M1 with an octa-core architecture, paired with up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 2 TB of native storage. The Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro has the Snapdragon 870 mobile platform paired with up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Despite they are both flagships, the iPad Pro M1 is able to offer higher performance thanks to its superior hardware department. Further, the iPad Pro M1 has a more advanced operating system for tablets: iPadOS, which is able to maximize the user experience in multi-tasking.

Camera

Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro and Apple iPad Pro M1 are two of the best tablets in terms of camera performance. Overall, the iPad Pro M1 is superior with its 12 MP main sensor including OIS, a 10 MP ultrawide camera, and a TOF 3D LiDAR scanner for AR appliances. But the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro is still a great camera tablet with its 50 MP main camera (only available in the 5G variant) and a 5 MP ultrawide sensor.

Battery

The battery capacities of these two tablets do not differ too much: 7538 mAh for the iPad Pro M1 and 8600 mAh for the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro. Despite the iPad Pro M1 has a smaller capacity, the battery life should not be so far due to the great optimization of iPadOS. But the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro has a much faster charging technology with a power of 65W instead of the 18W found on its rival.

Price

Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro debuted in the Chinese market with a €330/$387 starting price, while iPad Pro M1 starts from €780/$915. The iPad Pro M1 wins the comparison as it is a much better tablet than the latest Xiaomi flagship, but its price is more than twice superior to the Mi Pad 5 Pro. That is why the Xiaomi tablet offers a way higher value for money.

OnePlus teases a dual-screen phone to be announced tomorrow but don’t get too excited

Back in 2019, Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, said that there are no plans for a foldable phone anytime soon. A year later, the founder revealed in an interview that existing technology isn’t good enough for foldable phones. Based on the standpoint of the manufacturer, we do not expect a Galaxy Z Fold rival from them anytime soon. However, it appears OnePlus has a surprise for us tomorrow according to a teaser it posted earlier today.

The official OnePlus USA Instagram and Twitter account both shared a short clip of a phone and a date that is for tomorrow, August 11 (yeah, the U.S. goes with MM/DD/YY). The dual-screen device reminds us of LG’s Dual Screen case which when attached to select devices such as the LG V60, gave it a second screen. Does it mean OnePlus plans to announce a dual-screen accessory for its existing phone(s) or a dual-screen phone tomorrow? We are not sure but a trusted source says we shouldn’t be excited.

Young leaker, Ishan Agarwal, who has leaked multiple OnePlus devices in the past has said that the teaser is just two OnePlus 9 Pro phones put together. So it is safe to assume that this isn’t necessarily a new product.

There is a possibility OnePlus is teasing a special promotion, which makes sense considering that every Wednesday is OnePlus Day, its weekly deals day. So this may be a BOGO (Buy One, Get One Free) promo for the OnePlus 9 Pro but with a special teaser to get people talking. The timing is perfect too since Samsung is announcing the Galaxy Z Fold3 tomorrow.

Xiaomi Sound with UWB is the brand’s first high-end smart speaker priced at ¥499 (~$77)

Xiaomi, Tuesday evening, held a highly-anticipated launch event in China where it unveiled the premium Xiaomi Mix 4 smartphone alongside the Mi Pad 5 series, the Xiaomi CyberDog, and its second-generation OLED TV. Xiaomi also announced what it called its first high-end smart speaker. The gadget bears the moniker Xiaomi Sound and despite the appellation as a high-end speaker, it arrives with a fairly decent price tag of 499 yuan (~$77).Xiaomi Sound

Also, one would have expected a bulky speaker but the Xiaomi Sound features a compact body and surprisingly, the internal configuration is designed to output a powerful sound. The speaker is also embedded with Harman AudioEFX which allows the speaker to transform into a powerhouse of deep and rich low-frequency sound without damaging the hardware. This re-enforces the claim that it is indeed a high end product.Xiaomi Sound

The speaker features built-in neodymium iron boron powerful magnets with dual suspension passive radiators. Xiaomi claims it can achieve 90dB shock sound pressure and 70Hz full bass. At the same time, it adopts 360° omnidirectional sound output, a top-mounted sound guide cone design, and is the Hi-Res (high-resolution) certification.Xiaomi Sound

Xiaomi Sound is available in two colors of silver and black, and the metal quality is sufficient. Lei Jun touts it to be the most beautiful and high-end smart speaker that the brand has launched in 10 years.XIaomi SOund

Furthermore, Xiaomi Sound also supports the calculation of audio functions, 330 calculations per second, to achieve dynamic tuning. At the same time, it deploys algorithm to regulate the sound quality and volume at night time to suit the ambience.Xiaomi Sound

Another interesting feature is that the speaker supports two interconnections, combined stereo, and even 8 interconnections. That means you can link up to eight different speakers together which can then be placed at different locations to achieve a robust sound experience. Apart from Bluetooth connectivity, the smart speaker also supports Ultra-Wide-Band (UWB) connectivity.

Xiaomi is yet to reveal the availability details. We also expect the company to launch this product outside China at some point.

Xiaomi unveils MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition and MIUI for Pad

At the Mi MIX 4 launch event, Xiaomi not only announced a bunch of hardware but also software. The company unveiled MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition and MIUI for Pad. Let’s take a look at what they have to offer.

MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition

As the name suggests, MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition brings improvements for MIUI 12.5, which itself is a polished version of MIUI 12. In fact, Xiaomi is yet to deliver MIUI 12.5 to eligible devices worldwide but we already have a newer version of the software.

Xiaomi says that MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition comes with fixes for 160 system header problems and 224 system application problems. The latest version of MIUI also brings all-around optimizations for the bottom framework to the top-most application layer.

MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition Logo Featured

According to the company, the new version of its mobile operating system is a result of progress achieved by the engineers in optimizing the MIUI system in the last six months. This means the MIUI Pioneer Group might not have played a key role in the development as it was established recently.

In a nutshell, MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition does not introduce new features. Instead, it comes with four optimizations, namely Liquid Storage, Atomic Memory, Focus Calculation, and Intelligent Balance.

  • Liquid Storage

    • A self-developed solution for optimizing storage mechanism. Helps in retaining read and write performance over a long period of time.
  • Atomic Memory

    • A self-developed solution for optimizing memory management mechanism. Improves the performance of holding applications in memory.
  • Focus Calculation

    • A self-developed solution for optimizing processor scheduling. Helps is reducing CPU usage and power consumption.
  • Intelligent Balance

    • This solution intelligently allocates hardware performance as well as power consumption, and seeks a balance between the two.

MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition stable update will be rolled out to the first batch of the following 12 devices from August 13 in China.

  • Mi MIX 4
  • Mi 11 Ultra
  • Mi 11 Pro
  • Mi 11
  • Mi 10 Ultra
  • Mi 10 Pro
  • Mi 10S
  • Mi 10
  • Redmi K40
  • Redmi K40 Pro
  • Redmi K30S Ultra
  • Redmi K30 Pro

Xiaomi says that a detailed rollout plan for all the eligible devices will be shared shortly on Mi Community. Unfortunately, it’s not known whether this version of  MIUI will make its way to global markets at the moment.

MIUI for Pad

Xiaomi launched Mi Pad 5 and Mi Pad 5 Pro alongside the Mi MIX 4. These are the company’s first-ever tablets in the last three years. Apart from bringing high-end hardware for affordable price tags, they also debut a new version of MIUI called MIUI for Pad.

MIUI for Pad Logo Featured

MIUI for Pad is basically a redesigned MIUI 12.5 for tablets. It is a known fact that many Android applications don’t support full screen yet. However, Xiaomi claims that its version of Android offers a full-screen app experience along with split-screen mode.

However, it is worth noting that the company also mentions that only 300+ mainstream applications are well-optimized for MIUI for Pad. Hence, it has set a target to adapt 2000 applications by the end of this year.

Xiaomi requests app developers to join the Xiaomi Open Platform to improve the state of the Android tablet app ecosystem. Since multiple smartphone OEMs are expected to release Android tablets in the coming months, we might finally see an improvement in this regard.

Last but not least, the company did not reveal anything about the new Mi Security app for tablets, which it teased recently.
