Samsung’s LPDDR5 uMCP offers flagship experience to low-cost smartphones

Samsung Electronics has announced that it has begun mass producing the latest memory solution, LPDDR5 UFS-based multichip package (uMCP). It integrates the fastest LPDDR5 DRAM with the latest UFS 3.1 NAND flash, delivering flagship-level performance to a much broader range of smartphone users.

Samsung LPDDR5 uMCP

The South Korean giant reveals that this new uMCP can deliver lightning-fast speed and high storage capacity at very low power. This would allow more consumers to immerse themselves in numerous 5G applications that were previously only available on premium flagship models. Such features include advanced photography, graphics-intensive gaming and augmented reality (AR).

The flagship-level capabilities are made possible by a nearly 50 percent improvement in DRAM performance, from 17 gigabytes per second (GB/s) to 25GB/s, and a doubling of NAND flash performance, from 1.5GB/s to 3GB/s, over the previous LPDDR4X-based UFS 2.2 solution.

It also helps in maximizing space-efficiency within a smartphone by integrating DRAM and NAND storage into a single compact package that measures only 11.5mm x 13mm, allowing more space for other features.

With DRAM capacities ranging from 6GB to 12GB and storage options from 128GB to 512GB, the Samsung uMCP can be easily customized to accommodate the diverse needs of 5G smartphones throughout the mid- and high-end segments.

So far, Samsung has successfully completed compatibility testing of the LPDDR5 uMCP with several global smartphone manufacturers and expects the uMCP-equipped devices to hit mainstream markets starting this month.

OPPO Reno6 Z key specifications leaked, hints at global launch of Reno6 series

OPPO reportedly gearing up to bring the Reno6 series of smartphones in global markets. Fresh information reveals that the company could be planning to launch a phone named Reno6 Z in some markets. This handset is expected to arrive as the successor to the Reno5 Z that debuted in April this year. A fresh leak has revealed the key specifications of the Reno6 Z handset.

According to tipster Abhishek Yadav, the Reno6 Z has a regular 60Hz refresh rate supporting display and it is powered by the Dimensity 800U chipset. There is no word on the battery capacity of the Reno6 Z, but the leak claims that it will carry support for 30W charging.

These specifications are also available on the predecessor model. There is a possibility that the Reno6 Z could be coming with improvements in other departments like cameras or battery capacity. It is advisable to digest the leak with a grain of salt until the rumor mill churns out new information on the Reno6 Z.

The OPPO Reno5 Z has a 6.43-inch S-AMOLED display that supports an FHD+ resolution. The Dimensity 800U chipset powers the smartphone with 8 GB of RAM. It has a built-in storage of 128 GB, but it lacks support for a microSD card.

OPPO Reno5 Z
OPPO Reno5 Z

It has a front camera of 16-megapixel, and its rear camera system has a 48-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel superwide lens, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. It is backed by a 4,310mAh battery that supports 30W rapid charging. For security, it has an in-screen fingerprint scanner.

In related news, an OPPO phone with a CPH2247 model number has bagged FCC certification. Initial reports claimed that it is the global version of the Reno6 Pro. However, the FCC listing suggests that China’s Reno6 Pro+ 5G may get rebadged as the Reno6 Pro in global markets. So far, the Reno6 series phones are only available in China. The FCC certification of Reno6 Pro and the new leak of Reno6 Z suggests that the company could be soon bringing the Reno6 lineup to global markets.

Apple Watch Series 7 tipped to feature blood glucose and body temperature sensors

Apple has continued to provide innovation in its Apple Watch series, including the soon-to-be-released model this year. However, subsequent versions of Apple watches could have additional features like blood glucose and body temperature sensors to provide improved health surveillance data for its users. Bloomberg reports that the 2021 Apple Watch model could come with an improved screen setup and thinner display bezels. In addition, there would be an improved ultra-wideband support and less distance between the display and front cover because of the use of an improved lamination technique.

Smart wearables are increasingly becoming health and fitness gadgets, providing data on diverse aspects of our body mechanism and reactions 24 hours a day. Last year, several studies were carried out in the United States and elsewhere, which showed that Apple Watches could identify potential Covid-19 patients several days before symptoms began to manifest. This was accomplished by collecting and real-time analysis of diverse data on body functions that identified some departure from the normal processes. The blood glucose sensor will help to monitor blood sugar levels for diabetic patients in a more effective and less intrusive manner. The temperature sensor is believed to be several years away and could gain the attention of thousands of users in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Apple could also be gearing up for the release of sports-centric models for extreme sports enthusiasts from 2022. There is even talk that a durable sports model that could be called the Explorer, could debut in 2022.

As expected, Apple has neither refuted nor confirmed the rumors surrounding its incoming lineup of Apple Watches. This further feeds into the speculations, although further information will become available from different sources as we move forward.

OPPO Reno6 Pro FCC certified, may debut as a rebranded phone

OPPO announced the OPPO Reno6 5G, Reno6 Pro 5G, and Reno6 Pro+ 5G smartphones in China last month. Speculations are rife that these phones will be hitting the global markets in July. Fresh information reveals that the Reno6 Pro+ has received certification from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. The FCC listing is a good hint that the global launch of the Reno6 series could be approaching near.

In the recent past, an OPPO phone with model number CPH2247 was spotted at certification platforms such as EEC (Europe), TKDN (Indonesia), SIRM (Malaysia), and NBTC (Thailand). The latter revealed that this device may launch with the OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G moniker. Now, the CPH2247 model has received approval from the FCC authority (via).

The FCC listing reveals that the OPPO CPH2247 measures 160.8 x 72.5 x 7.99mm and weighs 188 grams. The phone runs on ColorOS v11.3 and it has a 4,400mAh rated battery (4,500mAh typical value). The listing also reveals that the device carries support for 65W rapid charging.

It can be said based on the NBTC listing that the CPH2247 could be launching as the Reno6 Pro. However, the dimensions of the Reno6 Pro do not match CPH2247’s dimensions.

The Reno6 Pro that debuted in China measures 160 x 73.1 x 7.6mm and weighs 177 grams. On the other side, the Chinese Reno6 Pro+ has 160.8 x 72.5 x 8mm dimensions and weighs 188 grams. Hence, there is a possibility that the Snapdragon 870 powered Reno6 Pro+ could be rebranded as the Reno6 Pro in global markets. Hopefully, newer reports will reveal further details of the CPH2247 handset through which it can be ascertained whether the company really rebadge the Chinese Reno6 Pro+ as Reno6 Pro in global markets.

Honor could join the foldable market soon with the Honor Magic Fold

Former Huawei subsidiary Honor could be getting ready to join the growing list of smartphone producers that have a foldable display smartphone in their product lineup. Samsung, Google, and Oppo are among the leading lights in this segment of the market, and there are indications that Honor could also unveil its own smartphone with a foldable display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Mystic Bronze In Hands Featured
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

According to reports culled from the latest edition of the Display Supply Chain Consultants, Honor is planning to unveil its first foldable smartphone in 2022. The report indicates that the upcoming Honor Magic Fold could rival some of the foldable models already listed for unveiling later this year. Samsung could release two foldable Galaxy smartphones by August 2021.

Honor is leveraging on its new status as an independent entity from Huawei. This means that it could access foldable display technology from suppliers without much restriction. Visionox and BOE are tipped to be the likely suppliers of the foldable display that would adorn the device.

Not much is known about the forthcoming Honor magic fold. Honor has also not made any official statement relating to an impending foldable smartphone. Indeed, much of the news remains speculation, and this includes its projected name of Honor Magic Fold.
However, we expect the rumor to be credible and authentic.

Honor has continued to blossom in the wake of its sale by Huawei in 2020. It will hope to make a strong statement with its entry into the foldable display market already primed for a possible Samsung domination. Samsung is known to be developing several foldable display technologies, going by the number of patents it has already secured. Its display arm is also well-kitted to drive the development of foldable technologies. Samsung Display recently provided some images of some of its foldable displays.

Realme has other cheap 5G phones planned for India after the Narzo 30

The realme Narzo 30 series made its debut back in February. At the event held in India, the manufacturer had announced the Narzo 30A and the Narzo 30 Pro 5G, However, the Narzo 30 itself was missing from the scene. It has now been confirmed that the phone will arrive in India later this month in 4G and 5G variants.

Realme Narzo 30 5G
Realme Narzo 30 5G

The info was revealed in a tweet earlier by the CEO, Madhav Sheth, as well as in an exclusive interview with Techradar, but that wasn’t all. According to the top executive, Realme’s focus is on 5G and the company has deployed about 90% of its R&D resources to 5G so as to bring the technology to people across the globe at the cheapest price possible. This move will result in more affordable 5G devices some of which will launch under the Narzo series.

Although Realme is focusing on 5G devices especially in countries like India where the service is yet to roll out, we can still expect the company to launch 4G models, especially under its C-series. However, by getting its 5G devices in the hands of as many users as possible, it can prepare them for when the service eventually rolls out.

Madhav also revealed that its IoT plan which suffered a setback due to undisclosed issues is back on track. It plans to add more devices to its TechLife ecosystem and has revealed it will launch many AIoT products soon. We may even see some launch alongside the Narzo 30 and Narzo 30 5G this month.

Google may launch a more powerful wireless charger alongside the Pixel 6 series

The Pixel Stand is Google’s wireless charger for compatible Pixel phones. Announced back in 2018, it sure is due for a successor with better technology and it appears we may be getting just that this year when the Pixel 6 series arrives.

Pixel Stand

Details dug up in the code of the recently released Android 12 Beta 2 have pointed at a new wireless charger in development. Found by 9to5Google, the code mention cooling fans in the charger which means that the wireless charger should be able to pump out more than the 10W the first-gen Pixel Stand outputs.

We expect the new wireless charger to have a significantly higher maximum power output but most likely not as close to what we have from Xiaomi, Huawei, OPPO, OnePlus, and Meizu.

The code also reveals the wireless charger is codenamed “Luxuryliner”, and looking at the inspiration for the name, there is a possibility that this may not be a vertical wireless charger.

Just like the Pixel Stand, this new charger should be able to activate some interesting software features on the new Pixel phones once placed on it. The Pixel Stand activated a new UI on the Pixel 3 that displayed the owner’s schedule, traffic info, and latest news. It also automatically turned on Do Not Disturb Mode at night while users who own a Nest Hello Video Doorbell could see who is at the door on the screen of their phone when placed on the charger.

The Pixel Stand had a launch price of $79 and shipped with a USB-C to USB-C cable and an 18W USB PD adapter. Knowing Google, we do not think the next-gen charger will cost any less especially if it is bringing new features and faster charging.

Huawei MatePad 11 vs iPad Air vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE: Specs Comparison

Besides the 2021 versions of the MatePad Pro, Huawei launched another tablet with HarmonyOS 2.0 which is actually more affordable: the MatePad 11 2021. Despite it is cheaper, it still comes with flagship-class specifications. We can not tell the same about the newly-announced Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE, an affordable version of the Galaxy Tab S7 series, but this tablet still has its own advantages. Another affordable tablet with flagship-class specifications is the iPad Air 2020, even though it is a bit older. Which tablet is worth buying now? This comparison will hopefully clear your ideas in regards.

Design

The Apple iPad Air is more elegant and beautiful than its two rivals by Samsung and Huawei because it has a thinner profile, it is lightweight and it has an aluminum body. It also comes with a fingerprint reader, unlike the Huawei MatePad 11 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is comfortable because it has a magnetic slot for the S Pen.

Display

If you need the best display, you should opt for the iPad Air 2020. Its Liquid Retina IPS LCD display has a better color reproduction, it supports a wider color gamut and the True-tone technology which adapts the colors to the environment. The iPad Air also comes with a 4:3 aspect ratio which is great for viewing images and reading. The second place goes to the Huawei MatePad 11 2021 packing an IPS display with the highest refresh rate: 120 Hz. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is inferior with its TFT display coming with a standard 60 Hz refresh rate. All of these tablets have a Quad HD+ resolution.

Hardware/Software

The most advanced performance is provided by the Apple iPad Air 2020: not only it has a stronger Apple A14 Bionic chipset, but it also comes with a well-optimized operating system able to guarantee higher stability and speed. But the Huawei MatePad 11 remains a flagship tablet with its Snapdragon 865 processor, up to 128 GB of internal storage, and 6 GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is just a mid-ranger with its Snapdragon 750G. But there is an important thing to note: iPad Air 2020 does not support 5G, while Huawei MatePad 11 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE do.

Camera

The iPad Air 2020 provides the best camera: we are talking about a 12 MP sensor with a bright f/1.8 focal aperture and 4K video recording up to 60 fps. The selfie camera is great as well with its 7 MP resolution, HDR, and 1080p video recording at 60 fps. The Huawei MatePad 11 comes right after with a 13 MP rear camera paired with an 8 MP front camera, while the camera found on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is a bit disappointing with its 8 MP resolution.

Battery

The most important pro of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is the battery: with its capacity of 10,090 mAh it is a lot bigger than its rivals and it provides a great battery life. Further, it supports a faster 45W charging technology.

Price

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE and Apple iPad Air are priced at about €650/$788 in the global market, while Huawei MatePad 11 starts from €400/$485 in the Chinese market and it is still not available globally. Overall, the iPad Air 2020 looks like a better choice due to its better camera, display, and operating system (at least for those who want to work with their tablet).

Microsoft reveals Windows 10 support will end Oct. 2025, new proof Windows 11 is coming

Microsoft has scheduled June 24 as the date for the unveiling of a new version of Windows. While it didn’t officially reveal what the new version will be called, there are speculations it will launch as Windows 11. Now, an updated support page for Windows 10 lends credence to those speculations.

A support life cycle page for Windows 10 that was recently updated has revealed that support for the operating system will end on October 14, 2025. That is about 3 months after its 10th anniversary. It has been reported that the support page mentions Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro (including Pro Education and Pro for Workstations).

Windows 10 retirement date

This new development has led to the belief that the new version of Windows that will be unveiled next week will definitely not launch as Windows 10. While the name is still unconfirmed, Microsoft is expected to continue the numerical naming scheme, so Windows 11 seems logical.

The new version of Windows should come with changes in the user interface as well as lots of new features, some of which were expected to launch with the now-canceled Windows 10X.

Piaggio One e-scooter series can hit a top speed of 60km/h & 100km range

Italian electric scooter manufacturer Piaggio has unveiled its next-generation electric scooters at the Beijing Motor Show. The Piaggio One series is made up of the Piaggio One, One+, and One Active, each having different battery sizes and ranges.Piaggio One

The new Piaggio One electric scooter series is a follow-up of the company’s Vespa Electrica scooters. The three models in the series are mainly targeted at a more urban and younger audience. Piaggio did reduce the entry cost of these scooters with a lower power design since it is aimed to be used in urban centers.Piaggio One+

Of the three models, the Piaggio One is the entry-level model. It is powered by a 1.2 kW electric motor, with a top speed of just 45 km/h (28 mph). Under the moped laws of most countries, the riders will not need a motorcycle license to use the scooter. It comes with a 48V and 25Ah unit battery with 1.200 Wh capacity, which according to the company can run for 55 km or 34 miles.

On its part, the Piaggio One+ is also powered with a 1.2 kW electric motor with the same top speed as the Piaggio One. However, the battery is bumped up to a 2,300 Wh capacity. With this boost, it can go a distance of about 100 km or 62 miles.Piaggio One

Meanwhile, riders that desire a faster scooter can go for the Piaggio ONE Active. It is powered by a more powerful 2 kW motor, which enables the scooter to reach a top speed of 60 km/h or 36 mph. Although the scooter is equipped with a more powerful motor, the battery is 2,300 Wh capacity, the same as the Piaggio ONE+. Thus, the scooter has a maximum range of 85 km or 53 miles.Piaggio One

The charging time of all the scooters according to Piaggio is six hours, with removable batteries that can be charged remotely. The company has teamed up with a consortium that designs removable batteries, with the intent to have a standard scooter and electric motorcycle batteries, but no new battery design has been disclosed by Piaggio. It is still not clear if the Piaggio ONE series batteries are made with the new standards.

The new Piaggio ONE scooters will first be available in China with a price tag of 17,800 RMB (~$2,785).

Tipster reveals Chinese OEMs are already testing the Snapdragon 888 successor

Earlier this month, a couple of leaks surrounding what is said to be the successor of Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 888 chipset. The chipset codenamed SM8450 is said to be built on a 4nm process and is expected to power next-generation flagship phones.Qualcomm logo

The SM8450 has now appeared in the rumor mill again. Noted Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed that the upcoming 4nm Qualcomm chipset is already being sampled by many of the top Chinese phone manufacturers who may likely release models powered by the next-gen Qualcomm flagship. The tipster also disclosed that the enhancement on the upcoming chipset may be more than on last year’s Snapdragon 865 and SD 865+. Snapdragon 888 successsor

We can’t say how fast that can be for now but the earlier leak tips the chipset to feature Qualcomm’s new ARMv9 chip architecture with Kryo 780 cores. The chipset also features an Adreno 730 GPU, Adreno 665 Video Processing Unit (VPU), and Adreno 1195 Display Processing Unit (DPU). The chipset will also integrate a Spectra 680 ISP for image processing.

Further, the Snapdragon 888 successor will also feature a Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF system. The 5G modem was first announced in February this year and brings superior speed and support for up to 10Gbps speeds on both standalone and non-standalone 5G networks. The upcoming processor also brings a FastConnect 6900 chip that provides support for Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

Qualcomm is expected to announce the Snapdragon 888 successor in the second half of the year.

Beats Studio Buds launched with fewer Apple features but better Android support for $150

Apple has announced its latest pair of TWS earbuds under the Beats brand. The Beats Studio Buds as they are called are vastly different from the 2019 Beats Powerbeats Pro in terms of design and features. They are also significantly cheaper and can be said to even support Android devices better than any of Apple’s other offerings.

Beats Studio Buds featured

The Beats Studio Buds feature a stem-less design, unlike Apple’s AirPods. They also ditch the hook-like design of the Powerbeats Pro which means they are smaller in form factor. Available in Black, Red, and White, and weighing 5 grams each, the earbuds will be easily recognizable by the famous Beats “b” logo in white on each earbud.

According to the product page, the earbuds use a proprietary layered driver with a dual-chamber acoustic design for clear sound and an effective Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) performance.

Like a number of earbuds with ANC, these also have a Transparency Mode that allows you to hear the world around you. It does this with the help of external-facing microphones that pick up the sounds of your surroundings.

Beats Studio Buds features

The Beats Studio Buds don’t feature an Apple chip which is surprising but you still get features such as hands-free Hey Siri, a pairing interface similar to AirPods, and integration in the Control Center.

According to The Verge, the lack of an Apple chip means that you don’t get features such as automatic pairing across Apple devices on your iCloud account, audio sharing, and the ability to automatically switch between the devices in use such as from your iPhone to iPad or Mac. However, you do get support for Apple Music’s new Dolby Atmos spatial audio.

While the earbuds lack features associated with Apple earbuds, it does work pretty well with Android devices. They support Fast pair which means they are linked to your Google Account after the first setup and don’t need to be paired to other devices tied to that Google account. They will also display their battery status as well as that of the case under Bluetooth settings. Another feature is support for Find Device which lets you find the device or check its last known location. The product page says you will also be able to update the firmware with the Beats app for Android.

Beats Studio Buds

The Beats Studio Buds has an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance. The earbuds have on-device controls that allow you to control playback, answer/reject calls, turn on ANC or transparency mode, or call up the assistant.

The earbuds offer a battery life of 8 hours on a single charge that goes up to 24 hours with the case. They also support fast charging – a 5-minute charge will provide up to 1 hour of playback.

The case of the Beats Studio Buds, which weighs 48 grams, charges via a USB-C port (no wireless charging support). It comes with a USB-C to USB-C charging cable and three pairs of ear tips of different sizes.

If you want the new earbuds, they are listed on Amazon US and Best Buy but are not yet available for purchase until June 24. It has also been announced in China for ¥1099 (~$172) and it will be available starting July 2.

Galaxy S21 FE production is still not suspended: Samsung

The media was awash recently with news that Korean tech giant Samsung had halted plans to mass-produce the much-anticipated Galaxy S21 FE due to a chip shortage. Samsung has now responded to the report, stating it has not made a decision on whether to stop production of the Galaxy S21 FE.

In a statement sent to Bloomberg, the company said: “Although we cannot discuss the details of the unreleased products, the so-called suspension of production has not yet been determined.”

The news of Samsung halting product of the expected phone was first carried by Korean blog ETNews and was hinged on the prevailing shortages being encountered in the semiconductor industry. The report also asserted that the Qualcomm processors set aside for the S21 FE had been reassigned to foldable devices scheduled for launch in August. The report has since been deleted, ostensibly due to Samsung’s response.

The Galaxy S21 FE is considered a trimmed-down version of the vanilla Galaxy S21, with no significant reduction in functions and a more affordable price. The new version will take over from the Galaxy S20 FE which was released last year. The FE stands for Fans Edition which is reflected in the premium build and affordable pricing for which the series is known since its inception.

Despite Samsung’s debunking of the report of production being suspended, the company didn’t outrightly affirm that production is still going on. Thus, it may take some time before the actual state of things is known. The Galaxy S20 FE wasn’t announced until September last year and it went on sale in October. We expect the Galaxy S21 FE release schedule to be around that same time.
