The China Smartphone Market is undergoing changes ever since HUAWEI was banned by the US. At first, the telecom giant’s market share grew due to increased patriotism. However, with no access to crucial suppliers, the company’s share began to drop gradually. Additionally, in order to survive, it had to sell its sub-brand HONOR. Now, the market is helmed by OPPO and vivo but the fastest-growing brand is none other than realme.
According to Counterpoint Research, the China Smartphone Market grew 5% in Q1 2021. However, despite that, the sales of current leading smartphones grew double-digit QoQ due to the fall of HUAWEI and HONOR.
Above all, realme, which only ranked 7th, was the fastest-growing brand in the first quarter of 2021. The company’s sales incremented by a whopping 451% YoY and 82% QoQ.
Senior Analyst Yang Wang of Counterpoint says that realme’s success lies in its effective marketing strategy. The brand’s products are targeted at budget-conscious Gen Z customers, who prefer premium features for social media, photography, and gaming. A better understanding of its customers helped realme to become the fastest brand to hit 50 million shipments last year.
As per Counterpoint, realme’s best-selling phones in China in the last 12 months were its Q2, V3, V5, and V15 series of devices. These handsets are priced between $150 and $250. Due to the success of these as well as similar 5G-ready smartphones, the ASP of the China Smartphone Market could drop below $200 or even $150 in the coming quarters.
Mr. Wang notes that mid and budget segments will be a ‘key battleground’ in the next few quarters. Since realme already sells plenty of devices in this price segment ($100-$500), it has a competitive edge.
As far as top players are concerned, offline-centric OPPO and vivo are battling to claim the crown. Whereas. Online-centric Xiaomi ranks third. Lastly, the performance of all the brands in the rest of 2021 will depend on their supply chain management as the global semiconductor shortage continues to worsen.
Realme is gearing up to launch the Narzo and GT series of smartphones in Europe. The upcoming Narzo 30 5G debuting next week will be the first Narzo branded phone to land in European markets. In addition, the Realme GT 5G flagship will go official in the coming month in Europe.
In March, Realme had confirmed that there are 4G and 5G versions of the Narzo 30. However, the Narzo 30, which was recently announced debuted in Malaysia is a 4G phone. There is no word on the specifications of the Realme Narzo 30 5G. All that is known about this device is that it will be available exclusively through AliExpress from May 25.
The Snapdragon 888 powered Realme GT 5G was made official in China in March. So far, it has not launched in any markets outside China. Now, Realme has confirmed that the device will be making its debut in the European markets in June.
The Realme GT 5G will be also available for purchase through AliExpress. The GT line also includes the Realme GT Neo and the Realme GT Neo Flash Edition, which is likely to debut on May 24 in China. It is unclear whether any of these will be also announced in Europe alongside the GT 5G flagship.
Coming back to the Realme GT 5G, the handset offers a 6.43-inch S-AMOLED FHD+ 120Hz display, up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage, and a 4,500mAh battery with 65W fast charging. It has a 16-megapixel front camera and a 64-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel triple camera system. At present, there is no word on the pricing of the Realme GT 5G and Narzo 30 5G for the European markets.
Recently, Xiaomi confirmed that it will be soon announcing a new smartphone called the Redmi Note 8 2021. It will be introduced to celebrate the 25 million+ global sales of the Redmi Note 8 smartphone, which was announced back in 2019. The Chinese firm has now released a new tweet to reveal the front design of the Note 8 2021.
The tweet reveals that the Redmi Note 8 2021 has a waterdrop notch display on the front. The original Redmi Note 8 flaunted the same display design. The company is yet to reveal the rear appearance of the Note 8 2021. It remains to be seen whether it continues to sport the same rear design as its original version.
It is unclear whether Xiaomi will be announcing the Redmi Note 8 2021 in May or June. However, what appears to be certain is that the company will continue to release more teasers to reveal its other features.
Recent reports have revealed that the Redmi Note 8 2021 that has a model number of M1908C3JGG has already passed Bluetooth SIG and FCC certifications. These certifications revealed that it will come with features like Bluetooth 5.2, MIUI 12.5, and a 4,000mAh battery.
Rumors surrounding it have claimed that it has an LCD panel that carries support for FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The Helio G85 SoC by MediaTek is expected to fuel the smartphone with 4 GB of RAM. The handset could be available in storage options like 64 GB and 128 GB.
The Note 8 2021 is likely to sport 48-megapixel quad rear cameras. The big battery of the phone could be coupled with 22.5W rapid charging. Only a few markets are expected to receive the Note 8 2021, and India does not seem to be one of them.
Last month, Tecno announced the Tecno Spark 7 Pro smartphone for global markets. The Chinese brand has now confirmed that it will be announcing the Spark 7 Pro in India on May 25. Like the Spark 7, the Spark 7 Pro will be available for purchase through Amazon India.
Tecno Spark 7 Pro specifications and features
The Tecno Spark 7 Pro features a punch-hole display of 6.6 inches. The LCD screen supports a 90Hz refresh rate and a Full HD+ resolution. It has a front camera of 8-megapixel for snapping selfies.
The back panel of the Spark 7 Pro has a vertical camera system, which comprises of a 48-megapixel primary snapper, a depth assist lens, and an AI sensor. The phone ships with Android 11 OS, which is overlaid with HiOS 7.5. The Spark 7 Pro is powered by the Helio G80 chipset and up to 6 GB of RAM. The phone offers users up to 128 GB of native storage and a microSD card slot.
It is powered by a 5,000mAh battery that comes with 10W charging support. A fingerprint scanner is available on the rear shell of the device. The connectivity features that are available on the device include dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, microUSB, and a 3.5mm audio jack. It comes in colors like Alps Blue, Spruce Green, and Magnet Black.
The Tecno Spark 7 Pro will be positioned higher than the Tecno Spark 7 that was announced last month in India. Its 2 GB RAM + 32 GB storage and 3 GB RAM + 64 GB storage variants are priced at Rs 6,999 ($100) and Rs 7,999 (~$110), respectively. Probably, the upcoming Pro may carry a starting price of Rs 8,999 (~$123) in the country.
Realme recently released the second generation of its square-shaped smartwatch, which belongs to the first smartwatch series by the brand. We are talking about Realme Watch 2, which comes with several improvements compared to the previous version. A few days ago, a Pro variant came up as well, but the vanilla version comes with a similar price tag to the previous generation. That is the reason why we decided to make a comparison between Realme Watch and Watch 2. Should you opt for the older model in order to save some money or the improvements of the new version are worth the money asked? This comparison will hopefully clear your ideas in regards.

Design and display
The Realme Watch and the Realme Watch 2 have similar designs but not identical. The second generation has narrower bezels around the display without that big Realme logo under the panel, so it looks definitely more beautiful. The disadvantage of the original Realme Watch is its thick bezels which are very noticeable in the dark when you get fewer deep blacks compared with daylight. Both the smartwatches are waterproof with the IP68 certification, but they are not suitable to swim as they are not swimming proof. They are also dust resistant.
Despite they are waterproof, they do not come with a premium build quality as they are made of plastic. The Realme Watch 2 is a bit heavier than the original Realme Watch because it packs a bigger battery. The displays are similar: in each case, you get an IPS panel with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels and a diagonal of 1.4 inches. But with the Realme Watch 2, you get a higher brightness: up to 600 nits against just 380 nits (peak). The square-shaped display makes the usability better if compared to round smartwatches, but naturally, due to this solution, they do not look like a traditional watch.
Software and features
The Realme Watch and the Realme Watch 2 have the same proprietary operating system which packs a lot of features. But with the second generation, you get a lot more sports modes. With the Realme Watch 2, you can track 90 sports modes up from the original Watch’s 14. It also supports sleep tracking smarts, a SpO2 monitor, and a heart-rate monitor, but you can find these features on the previous generation as well.
The smart watches offer music and camera controls, as well as a notification support feature, but you can not use the watch to reply to messages on messaging apps. The watches are able to automatically recognize if the user is walking or running and can be used to control smart home appliances and gadgets compatible with Realme’s app such as Realme Buds Air, air purifier, smart lights, speakers, smart TV, and more.
The devices are able to connect to the smartphone through the Realme Link app with Bluetooth 5.0. With the app, you can sync complete data gathered from the watch and look at them through very detailed stats and graphs. You can also adjust the settings of the devices through the app. Among the other software features, you get meditation, find my phone, phone unlock, reminders, weather, alarms with vibration, call reject, and more.
Battery
The battery is one of the main advantages of the Realme Watch 2 if compared to the original Realme Watch. It has a bigger capacity: 315 mAh vs 160 mAh. Realme doubled the battery capacity while keeping the weight similar and reducing the overall dimensions of the wearable. Thanks to its 315 mAh, the Realme Watch 2 is able to last up to 12 days on a single charge, which is a great battery life for a device with an IPS color display. With the Realme Watch, you get a battery with a 160 mAh capacity which lasts from 7 to 9 days on a single charge (20 days with power saving mode).
Price
The Realme Watch 2 just launched in the Malaysian market with a starting price tag of 299 Malaysian ringgit, which roughly translates into $56. Unfortunately, the smartwatch is still not available in the global market, so we can not tell you its global price for now. With a bit of luck, you can actually find the original Realme Watch with a price tag of about $49 in the global market, including Europe.
The Realme Watch 2 offers more sports modes, a better design, and a bigger battery which provides a way longer battery life. And, given that the price difference is not big, the Realme Watch 2 is definitely a better purchase than its predecessor. If you need more features for activity tracking, then you can opt for the Realme Watch 2 Pro which offers GPS support. The Watch 2 Pro will be available in Malaysia starting from May 29 with a $70 price tag.

Redmi, the sub-brand of Xiaomi has confirmed to launch the Redmi Note 10 5G series in China on May 26. Ahead of these smartphones’ official announcement next week, the company has been teasing their design and specs on Weibo. Let us take a look at all the confirmed features in this article.
First and foremost, we would like to let you know that the teasers shared by Redmi on Weibo seem to be for the top-end model of the Redmi Note 10 5G series. This high-end variant was first said to be called Redmi Note 10 Pro+ 5G. But now, it looks like this phone will go official as Redmi Note 10 Ultra 5G.
However, the company is yet to officially confirm the name of the models. Hence, it is using the term ‘Redmi Note 10 Series’ in all the teasers. But as we mentioned earlier, the specifications teased clearly belong to the expensive version.
With that out of the way, let us go through the confirmed specs. The so-called Redmi Note 10 Ultra 5G is teased to be powered by a flagship chipset. But Redmi is yet to reveal the silicon. Rumors are strife that it will feature a MediaTek Dimensity 1100 SoC.
Further, the device is teased to come with UFS 3.1 storage, which is unheard of in this price segment. Also, the brand says that 8 mainstream games will support 90FPS on this handset, which again sounds amazing for the price.
Lastly, Redmi claims a gaming smartphone-level cooling system in the Redmi Note 10 Ultra 5G. The brand says that the phone will sport a ‘quadruple cooling system’. This means the device will come with VC (Vapor Chamber), graphite, thermal conductive gel, and copper foil to offer a heat dissipation area of 16370mm².
Apart from the above-mentioned specifications, the company has also revealed the design of the alleged Redmi Note 10 Ultra 5G. This handset’s back panel will be similar to that of the Mi 11 Lei Jun Signature Edition and the entire device will weigh 193g.
That said, we expect to learn more about the Redmi Note 10 5G series before its official launch next Wednesday.
The global smartphone market has seen an impressive growth of 37 percent year on year in the first quarter of this year. This had the market bring in over 100 billion US Dollars in terms of revenue.
According to a StrategyAnalyticsreport, the market brought in a high figure with Apple leading the industry. Earlier, we had reported on the iPhone 12 series accounted for the highest sales number and revenue in the entire market. Linda Sui, Senior Director, at Strategy Analytics stated that “Apple and Samsung remain clear front runners in revenue terms but competition among the chasing pack is intense. Vivo surpassed Huawei and nudged up to the third place this quarter, for the first time ever.”
Similarly, Senior Analyst Yiwen Wu also added that “The global smartphone market is remarkable with 25% of revenue coming from super premium devices with wholesale prices above $900. Apple and Samsung dominate these hugely profitable segments. Vivo has seen success and is ranked first in the $400 to $499 wholesale band, while Oppo led in the US$191 to $299 range in Q1 2021. Transsion maintained the leadership in entry tier (US$36 to $99) this quarter.”
While Samsung and Apple dominated the market, Chinese smartphone brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and others also fought over market share. The overall revenue during this period also reached a new record high for this quarter.

Through 5G networking technology, the world is moving towards a more connected world. Now, the latest 5G modem from Qualcomm aims to help boost connectivity in the industrial and agricultural sectors.
The chip making giant recently announced the new 315 5G IoT Modem that aims to connect various machinery and robots and even enable high tech tractors in the fields as well. This new chipset 5G modem was announced earlier this week and is the first chip from the company that aims to link internet connecter devices to the new and faster 5G networking. The new modem is being aimed at industrial and agricultural sectors, and by its extensions, automation, and manufacturing.
Furthermore, the 315 5G Modem also has potential applications in other segments as well, including construction, energy, mining, public venues, and retail. An example being, a stadium owner could simply install the 315 5G IoT to boost connectivity and overall coverage to every person attending. Similarly, tractor manufacturers can also use this modem to enable more precise data collection in the fields.
The 315 arrives as Qualcomm attempts to address the needs of its industrial customers. This modem arrives with a low power processor, which means that machines can run cooler in hot warehouses. Additionally, it also has a smaller size compared to the ones it sells to consumer devices. In other words, it would make it easier for industrial companies to easily switch from 4G chips to the newer 5G modems without having to radically redesign their machines.

Huawei has just recently announced that it will be expanding its partnership with popular social media platform Viber. The announcement arrives as the smartphone maker saw positive consumer reception of the Viber Messenger app on its AppGallery.
At the moment, the messaging app has hundreds of millions of users in about 190 countries and is one of the first major brands to join the Chinese tech giant’s AppGallery. Furthermore, the app is even one of the most popular in the application store. For those unaware, Viber is a popular messaging and calling app that offers support for both audio and video calls and functions similar to another popular messenger, WhatsApp.
The two companies are now further teaming up to deliver deeper engagement with the growing user base. Notably, the success of the app is part of its plans of embracing Huawei’s “Global + Local” strategy. This had the smartphone maker focus on developing relationships with app providers and developers. Derek Yu, Vice President of Huawei CEE & Nordic at Huawei Consumer Business Group stated that “Lots of popular apps offer global services but these are not always in-sync with users’ local needs.”
Anna Znamenskaya, Chief Growth Officer at Rakuten Viber, also added that “We are very pleased to have such an important market player as Huawei as our partner. We are also glad that its users like our app. The data we receive from Viber downloads shows that our efforts are on the right track and our partnership is paying off. We are confident that our cooperation has a great future!”
