Google I/O 2021 to be a virtual event, starts May 18

Apple recently announced that it will host a virtual WWDC starting on June 7. Now, Google has cryptically announced that its I/O 2021 will also be virtual and will start from May 18.

Credit: 9to5Google

9to5Google was quick to decode the message on the I/O 2021 announcement. In a tweet, Google has shared the teaser and a link that takes us to an event page. Here, we see a set of puzzles with messages hidden inside the punchcards.

On decoding them, we get a message that Google I/O 2021 will be held virtually i.e, online skipping the usual Shoreline Amphitheater place and it will be free for everyone as well. Similarly, Apple has also said that developers don’t need to pay an entrance fee to attend the WWDC 2021 event.

Further, the message also has the event date and according to the report, Google I/O 2021 will be held from May 18 to May 20, 2021. We can expect announcements regarding the Chrome, Google Assitant, and Android 12 Beta.

Credit: 9to5Google

In 2019, Google used the I/O to announce its first-ever mid-range Pixel 3a/ 3a XL smartphones in May. However, the successor got pushed to October the next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, reports say that the Pixel 5a will be launching on June 11 which, if turns out to be true, will once again skip the launch at the I/O. However, there is a possibility that the ‘Pixel Buds A‘ wireless earbuds could launch at the event but let’s wait for an official confirmation.

Either way, Android and Chrome OS developers should watch out for the event as the company is expected to announce exciting updates regarding its future.

iQOO 7 Legend Indian variant scores 831,000+ on AnTuTu benchmarks

iQOO has already confirmed that it is bringing two iQOO flagship devices by the end of this month in India and one of them would be the iQOO 7 Legend. Today, tech influencer Mukul Sharma has shared the AnTuTu scores of the Indian variant and it crosses 831,000.

BMW Edition iQOO 7

In a tweet, Mukul has posted the AnTuTu benchmarks of the upcoming iQOO 7 Legend India variant(model: I2009) and it scores 831,200 overall. We already know that the iQOO 7 Chinese model appeared on AnTuTu (V2049A) and it scored about 733,519.

It’s also worth noting that the Indian variant is tested on AnTuTu V9.0.1 while the Chinese model appeared on V8.5.2. So you can expect a certain difference in scores accordingly. AnTuTu recently released a best performing flagship report(with V8) in China and the Black Shark 4 held the crown with 765,579 points.

Credit: Mukul Sharma(@stufflistings)

That said, if you consider the V9 version, the score seems to be a pretty big one and it is bound to be considering the device is said to have the latest Snapdragon 888 chipset. Anyway, the iQOO 7 Legend scores 213,884 and 320,226  points in CPU and GPU categories.

Also, the real-life images revealed recently hint that it’s the iQOO 7 Legendary edition from China, and hence, it should have the latest LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.

The iQOO 7 Legend is likely to feature a 6.62-inch AMOLED FHD+ centered punch-hole display with a 120Hz refresh rate, flagship Snapdragon 888 chipset paired with up to 12GB of RAM.

Other expected specs include a triple-camera with a 48MP main lens, 16MP selfie camera, 4,000mAh battery, Android 11 OS, and a price of under ₹40,000($537) in India.

Mobvoi teases the global launch of the TicWatch GTH

Back in January, Mobvoi announced the TicWatch GTH in China, a square-faced smartwatch whose USPs (unique selling points) include body temperature measurement. Today, the official Twitter account has posted a teaser that hints at a global release of the smartwatch.

The TicWatch GTH has a 1.55-inch 360 x 320 HD full-color display that is covered with a piece of 2.5D curved glass that is integrated into the metal frame. On the right of the frame is a circular button on the right. Mobvoi says the scratch-resistant glass has an anti-fingerprint coating and that the quick-release strap is skin-friendly. There are several watch faces available and users can also use their own photos as a watch face.

TicWatch GTH

The smartwatch has four major health indicators that it monitors. They are body temperature, blood oxygen level, heart rate, and breathing rate. Mobvoi claims it monitors these vitals 24 hours a day.

The temperature sensor, which is a feature not commonly found in smartwatches, can detect changes as small as 0.1°C. It can also measure the body temperature in just 5 seconds and in a variety of weather conditions at 10-minute intervals. It will also warn you when your body temperature is “abnormal”. The PPG biological sensor handles the 24-hour blood oxygen level and heart rate continuous detection.

The TicWatch GTH has support for 14 sports modes including yoga, basketball, football, gymnastics, skipping, and rowing. It also supports automatic detection of three sports modes – walking, running, and cycling – thanks to TicMotion. The watch also has a sedentary reminder, sleep tracking, and a breathing coach.

There is a 260mAh battery inside the smartwatch and it will last up to 7 days in typical usage mode and up to 10 days in basic usage mode. Charging is via two pogo pins on the underside and it takes 2 hours to fully charge. The smartwatch is water-resistant up to 50 meters and it connects via Bluetooth 5.0.

The smartwatch is available in a single color variant – Knight Black. It launched for ¥299 (~$46) in China, so we expect it to have a price tag of under $60 when it launches globally next week.

Samsung patents a Galaxy Tablet design with a foldable display

Samsung has patented a lot of designs for mobile devices in the past. Today, LetsGoDigital has spotted an interesting patent that suggests the company may bring a Foldable Galaxy Tablet in the future.

Credit: LetsGoDigital

The said patent has been applied at USPTO(United States Patent and Trademark Office) and it has been granted on February 16, 2021. Under the category ‘Display Device’, the description of the patent hints that Samsung is working on a Galaxy tablet with a flexible display.

Foldable displays have always been breezy for Samsung these days. However, the South Korean giant has come a long way and has even faced a few failed attempts in the process. At present, its Galaxy Z Fold2 is a practically viable foldable device with a 7.6-inch external display and the company is already working on a successor.

Currently, Samsung has tablets in the Galaxy Tab S, A lineup, and considering the foldable displays are costly, it should probably debut under the Tab S-series if Samsung were to launch a Foldable Tablet. Talking about the design of the patent, we see the bezels are minimal except the center portion.

Credit: LetsGoDigital

There is no cover screen and it looks to have an in-folding mechanism. The sensors, LED flash, and selfie shooter is placed at the center of the top. Speaking of which, the display has some sort of recess/notch on both top and bottom.

On the backside, the device doesn’t seem to have any cameras as the report points out. Turning it in portrait mode, we see speakers and a Type-C port for charging on the left. On the opposite side of this, there are the power button and another speaker.

As usual, this might just end up as a patented design and never make it to the markets as a commercial product. But we can expect devices having rollable and slider displays and also a foldable phone with a tri-fold mechanism from Samsung.

OnePlus Pay Trademarked in India, likely to rival Google Pay and PayTM

OnePlus is apparently working on bringing its own digital payment service to India. The company has recently trademarked OnePlus Pay, which will likely rival other online wallet services like Google Pay and PayTM in the region.

The trademark registration was found by Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings) and he shared the news on Twitter. As per the tweet, the Chinese tech giant is planning on soon launching it is in house payment platform in the country, although, it is still unknown when exactly the service will be available. The company had first announced that it was working on a payment service back in 2019 in China. This service works with the pre loaded wallet app, and users would have to set the OnePlus Pay as the default NFC based app.

To use the NFC based system, users can double press the power button to quickly access the digital wallet, which can be linked to the users’ debit cards. In India, the company is likely aiming to partner with Indian banks or international payment gateways like Mastercard or Visa that are widely popular in the region. Similarly, it might also choose to bring support for RuPay credit and debit cards as well for its Indian customers.

OnePlus Pay

OnePlus Pay would also have the company join the list of smartphone manufacturers that have announced their own mobile payment services. Furthermore, the company would also face competition from third party payment apps like Google Pay and PayTM that are based around the UPI system in India. Unfortunately, finer details are unknown regarding the digital wallet, so stay tuned for more updates.
