ASUS ROG Phone 5 premium gaming smartphone fails durability test

ASUS launched its fourth-generation gaming smartphone — ASUS ROG Phone 5 series earlier this month. The lineup includes three devices — ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro, and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate.

Now, YouTube channel JerryRigEverything conducted a durability test of the ASUS ROG Phone 5 but to the surprise of many, the device failed the test. A premium high-end gaming smartphone, which is made for rough usage, should have better durability.

When Jerry tried to bend the smartphone, without applying the full force, the phone’s vibratory went haywire and the bottom of the display started facing issues. A little more bend on the front made the display stopped working. When the phone was bent on the back, the glass-coated back panel cracked and the phone was dead.

However, the phone survived a few other tests, including the scratch test and the heat test. But it ultimately failed the durability test given that the smartphone was dead after performing the bend test on the device.

The ASUS ROG Phone 5 series come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The standard and Pro model max at 16GB RAM and 512GB internal storage, while the Ultimate version comes with a whopping 18GB RAM, similar to the RedMagic 6 Pro Special Edition.

On the front, the phones in the lineup come with a 6.78-inch FHD+ Samsung Super AMOLED Display (E4) with up to 144Hz refresh rate, 24.3ms touch latency, 300Hz touch sampling rate, and an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

As for the optics, the devices feature a triple camera setup on the back consisting of a 64MP Sony IMX686 primary sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide unit, and a 5MP macro shooter. There is also a 24MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

The devices run the latest Android 11 operating system out-of-the-box with both ZenUI and ROG UI on top. The phones are powered by a dual-3000mAh (6,000mAh) battery with support for 65W fast charging and Qualcomm Quick Charge 5.0.

Volvo to halt car production in China and US in March due to chip shortage

Volvo Cars will temporarily be halting or adjusting its production in China and the US. The primary reason for this move is due to the company being affected by the chip shortage issue that has affected various industries across the globe.

Volvo

According to a YahooNews report, the automobile maker made the announcement of adjusting or halting production earlier this week for China and the United States. As per the official statement, “We expect the situation to become critical during the second quarter and have therefore decided to take measures to minimize the impact on production while working daily to improve the situation. Volvo Cars will temporarily stop or adjust production in some of its car factories (in the United States and China) during the month of March.”

The company further added that it has yet to be affected or lose volumes due to the global chip shortage. Although, it said that there was a “big risk,” which could hit during the first quarter of this year. Notably, the shortages in semiconductors has affected the automobile industry, with various car makers competing with the consumer electronic industry for chip supplies.

Volvo

Previously, we had reported on the impact the chip supply issue would have on the automobile industry. Similarly, Germany has also urged Taiwan for help over its own automobile production issues owing to semiconductor shortages. The issue is expected to persist this year, so stay tuned for more updates.

iQOO 7 and Neo5 spotted at BIS, Likely to launch soon in India

Recent reports have claimed that iQOO is gearing up to launch new iQOO phones in India. One of them seems to be the iQOO 7 flagship phone that debuted in China in January. A screenshot shared by tipster Abhishek Yadav reveals the alleged iQOO 7 and iQOO Neo5 smartphones have received approval from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The BIS screenshot shared by the tipster shows that I2009 and I2011 are the model numbers of the upcoming iQOO smartphones for India. The I2009 was previously spotted with Snapdragon 888, mobile platform, 12 GB of RAM, and Android 11 OS at Geekbench in February. It is speculated that this model may break cover in India as the iQOO 7.

The iQOO I2011 model number has been spotted for the first time. A similar model number I2012 with specs like Snapdragon 870, 8 GB of RAM, and Android 11 OS was spotted at Geekbench last month. At that time, it was speculated that this device could be the Indian variant of the iQOO Neo5.

The I1927 and I1928 model numbers belong to the 4G and 5G variants of last year’s iQOO 3. Hence, there is a possibility that I2012, as well as I2011 model numbers, could be associated with the Neo5. With BIS certifications in tow, it appears that iQOO will soon announce new iQOO phones in India.

In related news, iQOO is reportedly planning to launch a mid-range Z-series phone and an entry-level U-series smartphone in China. These devices are likely to debut as iQOO Z3 and iQOO U3x by the end of this month. The Z3 may feature a 144Hz display, Snapdragon 768G, and 48-megapixel triple cameras, whereas the iQOO U3x could be a rebadged version of the Snapdragon 480 powered Vivo Y31s 5G.

Apple Mac based malware risks surged in 2020, but Windows still worse affected

The development of malware and other harmful softwares have risen for the Apple Macs last year. A new report has suggested the growth of Mac based malware risks, although the figure is still nowhere near as high as the number for Windows.

Apple

According to a AtlasVPN report (Via AppleInsider), security researchers at the AV-TEST GmbH found 674,273 new samples of malwares for macOS in 2020. On the other hand, the researchers found just 56,556 samples in 2019 and 92,570 in 2018. In other words, the group found a more than ten fold rise in malware samples for the platform. Furthermore, the data also proves that a lot more unique malware samples were identified, suggesting that malware developers are turning their attention towards Mac.

Notably, the 674,273 samples detected last year is also much higher than a total of 219,257 samples that were found by AV-TEST GmbH between 2012 and 2019. While the report does imply that harmful software and their development are growing, the number is still quite small when compared to Windows. AV-TEST GmbH found that 91.05 million samples were made for the Microsoft platform. This marks a new record high and an increase from 89.07 million samples in 2019.

Apple

Looking at these numbers, it implies that Windows based malware developers created an average of 249,452 new threats everyday. Meanwhile, Mac based malware creators only made about 1,847 new threats per day. As per AtlasVPN, macOS had become a target for attackers because of an increase in its market share in the overall PC market.

Motorola Moto G100 Europe price leaked ahead of launch

Motorola has officially confirmed to launch the Moto G100 on March 25. This smartphone will be the first Moto G series device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 series SoC. Ahead of its announcement, the handset’s price for Europe has been revealed by a retailer.

Motorola Edge S Review 01
Motorola Edge S (aka Motorola Moto G100)

The upcoming Moto G100 is a rebranded Motorola Edge S that launched in China in late January. Hence, we know everything about his phone. We even published our review of this smartphone earlier this month.

Now, before the global launch of Moto G100, a retailer from Europe has exposed the price of this handset on its website. A Spanish retailer called ParatuPc has currently listed the 8GB + 128GB variant of the phone in Blue color at €479.77.

The listing does not mention the official name of the device. Instead, it uses its model number XT2125. It was first spotted by Binay Konwar of Dealntech.

For comparison, the same 8GB + 128GB variant of Motorola Edge S costs only ¥2399 (€308) in China. In other words, the Moto G100 will cost around €172 more in Europe.

Anyway, it is worth noting that smartphones are usually expensive in Europe when compared to the rest of the world. On the other hand, handsets are mostly the cheapest in China. Hence, the vast difference in price is not surprising.

Samsung Galaxy A52 ships with a 15W charger despite supporting 25W fast charging

Yesterday, Samsung launched the Galaxy A52 and the Galaxy A72 mid-range smartphones at the company’s second Unpacked event of 2021. Both of these handsets support 25W fast charging. However, one of them ships with a 15W charger.

Samsung Galaxy A52 Awesome Violet Featured
Samsung Galaxy A52 Awesome Violet

The newly unveiled Galaxy A52 is backed by a 4,500mAh battery with support for 25W fast charging. For comparison, last year’s Galaxy A51 has a slightly smaller 4,000mAh battery and it is capped at 15W fast charging.

But unfortunately, just like the older Galaxy A51, the brand-new Galaxy A52 also ships with a popular Samsung 15W Adaptive Fast Charging adapter. Hence, if users want to make use of the phone’s maximum charging potential, they will have to buy the 25W charger separately.

On the other hand, the more expensive Galaxy A72 comes with a 25W charger instead. So buyers of this smartphone no need to worry about investing in a fast charger.

That said, Samsung is at least shipping these handsets with a charger, unlike the company’s flagship Galaxy S21 series.

Anyway, the Galaxy A52 despite featuring non-impressive specs for the price when compared to devices from Chinese OEMs, it does offer other important features. For instance, it is probably the only phone in the segment to come with IP67 certification, three Android updates, and four years of security updates.

Meizu 18 series to get 2K+120Hz mode via OTA update

Meizu has shown that certain features which some manufacturers may term hardware limitations can be enabled via a software update. For example, last year’s Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro got their refresh rate upgraded from 90Hz to 120Hz via a software update. Now, Meizu is about to pull a similar stunt with the Meizu 18 series.

The Meizu 18 and Meizu 18 Pro both have 2K displays with a 120Hz refresh rate but unfortunately, you can’t set the resolution to the highest  (QHD+: 3200 x 1440) and also have the refresh set to 120Hz. That changes with an OTA update that Meizu is working on.

Meizu 18 series 2K+120Hz mode

According to Meizu’s head of marketing, Wan Zhiqiang, its engineers have been working overtime on getting the feature available and they have finally cracked it. He even shared screenshots of the display set to maximum resolution and also the refresh rate set to 120Hz to prove that they have got it working. The poster above shows that the feature will be activated for all users via an OTA update which should roll out soon.

Meizu 18 series 2K+120Hz mode

The Meizu 18 and Meizu 18 Pro launched early this month. The former has a 6.2-inch S-AMOLED display while the former has a 6.7-inch S-AMOLED display. Both screens have four curves, a 240Hz touch sampling rate, a punch hole for the selfie camera, and are HDR10+ certified.

Inside the two phones is the Snapdragon 888 processor with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. Apart from screen size, the two phones also differ in the camera department. You get a 32MP front-facing camera on the standard model along with a 64MP+16MP+8MP triple camera on the back while the pro model has a 44MP selfie camera and quad-rear cameras that consist of a  50MP main camera, a 32MP ultrawide angle camera, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a TOF camera.

Apple Maps now directs users to the nearest COVID-19 vaccination center across the US

Apple is collaborating with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Vaccine finder to provide information on the nearest COVID-19 vaccination center across the United States. The information on your nearest vaccination facility is location-based and can be accessed via Apple Maps on various Apple devices.Apple Maps

This new feature is obviously a response to the current scenario of extensive vaccinations against the dreaded COVID-19 across the world. The US has been heavily hit by the pandemic and is gradually making solid progress to stem the tide of new infections by massive vaccination programs in thousands of facilities spread across the length and breadth of the country.

The initial partnership between Apple and VaccineFinder is for about 20,000 vaccination facilities, with their comprehensive location data and several other relevant information provided upon activating the feature in Apple Maps. On the Apple Maps search bar, the search query: COVID-19 vaccines, done in the Find Nearby menu will provide the closest centers where users can easily be vaccinated. The same operation can be achieved when using Apple’s smart assistant Siri.

The VaccineFinder service collects real-time information on the availability of vaccines at a variety of facilities including hospitals, pharmacies, and other centers in the US. In addition, the facilities can directly submit relevant information on various aspects of the pandemic, which will become visible on Apple Maps. At the height of the pandemic last year, Apple began providing information on testing centers for the Covid-19 in a number of countries in Europe and Asia, as well as in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States.Apple Maps

It is not known what plans are afoot to scale up the VaccineFinder partnership to cover many other countries outside the United States, as this would provide a massive boost in vaccination numbers as most countries continue to grapple with the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

Apple has continued to make its contributions in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic on various fronts. It has produced short news podcasts on COVID-19 and this is called Siri Audio Briefs. And recently, a slew of studies conducted using Apple smartwatches showed that these smart wearables could predict the onset of the disease up to 10 days before symptoms are visible.

Leaked Samsung 2021 product mini-roadmap reveals some upcoming products

Tipster Evan Blass has provided some tips on the possible lineup of gadgets slated for release by tech giant Samsung from April to August 2021. This is coming on the heels of the launch today of the much expected Galaxy A-series comprising the Galaxy A32, A52, and A72 together with their 5G versions during Samsung’s Unpacked event.Samsung Galaxy A72 Awesome White Violet Blue Black Featured

The leaked timeline rightly shows the Galaxy A- series models would launch on March 17. It also shows that several other Unpacked events have been lined up for the coming months to highlight a variety of products from the company.

The timeline equally suggests that in April 2021, another Unpacked event will signpost the unveiling of a number of computing devices including the Galaxy Chromebook and the Galaxy Book laptop PCs. It is projected that this event will hold specifically on 14 April, although tentatively.Samsung

The next event would not come up until June 2021, as attention would shift to Samsung’s Android offerings. A more affordable version of the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite is expected to go official. This is expected to follow the recent trend of Samsung producing a less expensive version of its high-end Android devices so as to still retain a segment of the smartphone market as it relates to Android smartphones. No tentative date was fixed for the June event.

In July, the Galaxy A22 will make its entry into the market, together with its 5G version. The A22 is seen as a successor of the S21 lineup. According to Bass, the Galaxy A82 5G will also be unveiled in July 2021. The Galaxy A82 5G is predicted to come with a dual-use camera module. No date was predicted for the unveiling in July.

Usually for Samsung, August is a very busy month of activities and an Unpacked event for the Galaxy S21 FE is predicted to hold on 19 August. So, as usual, we should be expecting the release of new Galaxy Note devices signposting the August event.

Unfolding events will determine whether the leak is authentic or just mere speculation taken too far. But so far, the Galaxy A32, A52, and A72 are launched as scheduled os, this might just be an authentic leak. We should also add that the tipster has got a high level of credibility.

OnePlus Store app gets a version for Canada and the United States

Last year, OnePlus released the OnePlus Store app for India. The app was another way for users to purchase OnePlus products alongside the official website/online store. Now, folks in Canada and the United States are getting their own version.

Unlike some apps that allow you to switch regions within the app itself, OnePlus has decided to go with a separate app for this new region. We guess there is a reason why they decided to go with this method rather than adding new regions within the existing app.

OnePlus Store App US and Canada

The app will not only provide you with your favorite products but also provide access to offers such as weekly deals; quick support and diagnostic tools; and member-only benefits. You will also get notifications for deals and discounts on items. The app also has a feature called OnePlus Club which is a sort of reward program where you earn experience points that unlock exclusive benefits.

The OnePlus Store in United States & Canada app as it is officially called is 27MB in size and is compatible with devices running Android 6.0 and up. While you can download it now from the Play Store, OnePlus revealed to XDA Developers that there will be an official launch on March 18.
