Apple iPhone SE 3 to launch next year with upgraded processor and 5G support

A well-known and reliable Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released his forecast related to the Apple iPhone lineup from the next couple of years. In the report, the interesting take is on the smaller iPhone SE.

As per the report, Apple won’t be releasing the next-generation model of the new Apple iPhone SE (2020) this year. Instead, the device will be launched next year.

iPhone SE 2020
Apple iPhone SE 2020

He further goes on to mention that there won’t be much change in terms of design of the smartphone and the display size of 4.7-inch could also remain the same. However, the company will be upgrading the processor and add support for 5G connectivity.

While it is mentioned that the chipset in the device will be upgraded, the report doesn’t reveal which processor will be used. Our speculation is that the device could pack the same chipset used in the upcoming iPhone 14 lineup or the current A14 Bionic.

The delayed launch of iPhone SE 3 doesn’t mean there won’t be a new iPhone SE model this year. As per the reports, the Cupertino-based giant is gearing up to launch iPhone SE Plus later this year.

The upcoming iPhone SE Plus is expected to come with a 6.1-inch display with a cutout on top of the screen. In the camera department, there could be a 12-megapixel dual-camera setup. Under the hood, it will pack A14 processor without 5G support and the device is also said to have support for a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

BOE showcases a 360° foldable display prototype

A couple of days back, we brought you a report that Chinese display maker BOE has edged Samsung Display out of the top spot to become the world’s largest display manufacturer. The brnad’s growth is among other things,, traceable to its high innovativeness. In this light, the display maker has unveiled the world’s first flexible display that folds up to 360 degrees. BOE Display

The display which is already being mass-produced utilises a flexible screen both on the outside and inside. The flexible display by BOE adopts a multi-neutral layer model design, which effectively reduces the stress of flexible “outside fold” and “inside fold”. The display is also able to realize a low crease effect on both the in-fold and out-fold aspects. The display can be folded up to 200,000 times without an hassle.

Currently, BOE has reportedly achieved mass production of R5 200,000-fold outward-folding displays and R3 200,000-fold in-folding displays, and supplies to domestic first-tier smartphone manufacturers. In addition to the flexible outer-folding and flexible in-folding displays that have been mass-produced, BOE has also deployed flexible sliding roll and now, flexible 360° folding technology.

From the official display, BOE’s flexible 360° folding technology breaks through the limitation of the single-direction folding of the display module, and achieves a 360° folding form whereby it can be folded in, left open and folded out completely. We expect the display to be shipped to manufacturers soon so as to find its way into foldable phones in the near future.

US’ SIA chief predicts a rise in chip sales this year despite chip shortage

The seemingly unrelenting global shortage in semiconductors, critical for many manufacturing processes has led to massive discontinuities in the supply chain and has affected many carmakers, leading to the temporary closure of some plants and the accompanying job losses.Samsung

Industry analysts had predicted that the shortages could extend up to the fourth quarter of the year, as the leading chipmakers continue to expand their production capabilities to bridge the gap. However, because of rising demands, the sales outlook globally for chips in 2021 remains quite strong, according to a piece on EE Times by John Neuffer, president and CEO of the US’ Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

“Looking ahead to the long-term, rising demand for personal technology and chip-powered devices will cause the semiconductor market to continue to grow in the years ahead. In addition to personal devices and servers, the long-term applications of semiconductors __ including AI, 5G, autonomous cars, and clean energy __ are quickly gaining steam,” the CEO said. In 2021, sales are expected to rise by 8.4% from a year ago, Neuffer wrote.

A number of governments had made moves to intervene in the chip shortage situation but it is yet to be seen whether such interventions could restore some balance in the semiconductor industry in the short term. Long term, many chipmakers are making investments in new plants to boost capacity.

It is expected that governments should also make investments in this critical component of the tech infrastructure. Last week, US President Joe Biden signed into law, an executive order for a 100-day review of product supply chains, geared towards addressing the chip shortage that has affected the US economy in no small way. This is in addition to a proposed $37 billion budget for the CHIPS for America Act, which is aimed at promoting and incentivizing semiconductor production and research in the US.

The global shortage of chips has been hugely driven by the increasing appetite for personal tech devices, which was further accentuated by the coronavirus pandemic which forced millions across the world to transform their homes to workspaces, with the purchases of personal devices to ensure a seamless work from home. Furthermore, the demand for high-end technology driven by powerful chips needed for 5G and other smart processes is expected to even grow further in 2021.

US drone maker Skydio’s valuation rises amidst Washington’s ban on Chinese drones

Following stringent restrictions by the US government that have essentially blacklisted Chinese drone manufacturers from the US market, US drone makers are now filling the huge void and thereby shore up their worth.

One of the companies that have benefitted tremendously from the Chinese ban is Skydio, and this is further confirmed with its recent valuation of more than a billion dollars. This is a fallout of the freezing of drones from China by several security agencies, as a result of what the US government insists is credible evidence that Chinese drones and their components are covert tools for espionage by the Chinese government.

The military and security segment of the market is most affected by the ban. However, a few Chinese drone makers are still active in the market, although they can only provide consumer-grade devices. Chinese drone giant DJI remains a strong player in the consumer market, although it could have fared better if the restrictions were not in place.

Skydio is expected to supply its high-end military-grade drones to the US Army and other security agencies, as well as several other applications.

However, market analysts are of the view that the consumer segment of the drone market holds huge potential in the next few years. It is seen as the fastest-growing segment of the drone market and holds up to 35 billion dollars in four years. Therefore, pursuing investment along these lines may hold some hope for Chinese drone makers, as they continue to adapt to the seeming unfair regulatory and uncertainty,- driven business climate put in place by the government.

These Chinese firms may just be unfortunate to be caught in the crosshairs of a battle of wits between the Chinese and US government.

Amazfit T-Rex Pro images and specifications leaks; may launch soon

Huami may have a new smartwatch launching soon now that the Chinese New Year holiday is over. While the manufacturer is yet to officially announce that it has a new smartwatch coming soon under its Amazfit or Zepp brands, a new leak has surfaced that hints at the arrival of a new watch. The watch is the Amazfit T-Rex Pro and now we know what it will look like as well as its specs.

Amazfit T-Rex Pro

This is not the first time we have heard of the Amazfit T-Rex Pro. Back in January, a leak revealed that it was among the new smartwatches Huami had planned for release this year. Just about a month after and we get our first look at the watch thanks to an exclusive leak from 91Mobiles.

There are a lot of similarities, both inside and out, between the Amazfit T-Rex Pro and the Amazfit T-Rex that was announced last year. The design looks practically unchanged but you get three new colors. Below are the specifications of the new watch:

  • 1.3-inch AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass protection and oleophobic coating
  • 360 x 360 resolution
  • BioTracker 2 PPG
  • 3-axis acceleration sensor
  • 3-axis gyroscope
  • Geomagnetic sensor
  • Altimeter
  • GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo
  • New operating system based on RTOS
  • Bluetooth 5.0 BLE
  • Support for devices running Android 5.0+ and iOS 10.0
  • 390mAh battery
  • 10 ATM waterproof rating
  • 47.7mm x 47.7mm x 13.5 millimeter; 59.4 grams

As you can see, the screen size and battery capacity are unchanged. However, the Amazfit T-Rex Pro now has the newer BioTracker 2 PPG sensor and a higher waterproof rating. It also supports more navigation satellite systems than the standard model. The leak says the smartwatch will be available in three colors – black, gray, and green. The original launched in five color options including a camouflage version.

There is no info on when the smartwatch will launch but we won’t be surprised if it launches this month.

Redmi monitor with a 27″ IPS display, 1080P resolution & 75Hz refresh rate launched

Xiaomi‘s Redmi brand has got a new product under its sleeves. The product is a display monitor which is the first the company is announcing since the launch of the Redmi 1A in May last year as the brand’s first monitor.Redmi Monitor

The new Redmi monitor packs a 27-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080p. The display carries a price tag of 799 yuan ($123), higher than the 499 yuan (~$77) price tag of the Redmi 1A. The monitor is expected to officially go on sale on March 8 via Xiaomi Mall and Jingdong.Redmi monitor

In terms of appearance, the 27-inch Redmi monitor continues the classic three-micro-edge design, and there is no unnecessary protrusion on the back of the screen. Xiaomi says the thinnest part of the display is only 7.5mm.

In terms of configuration, the display uses a 27-inch screen with an FHD resolution of 1920x1080p. It also supports a maximum refresh rate of 75Hz. Thanks to the IPS technology, the color display is more transparent and pure, and it has a higher light transmittance, and the viewing angle is as high as 178 degrees.

Further, the Redmi display utilizes an aspect ratio of 16:9, a brightness of 300cd/m² (TYP), a contrast ratio of 1000:1 (TYP), and a 100% sRGB wide color gamut.

Not only that, Redmi’s new display comes with a low blue light mode which won’t cause eye fatigue even if you stare at the screen for too long. Thus, it can be used in offices and by games. We doubt if too many gamers will find this monitor interesting considering the low refresh rate.

In addition, the 27-inch Redmi display supports different angle adjustments and uses five-way buttons to switch the machine, up and down, left and right directions. At the same time, it supports HDMI, VGA, and other interfaces.

OnePlus has an announcement scheduled for March 8. That is exactly a week from today. If you think it is a launch event for the OnePlus 9 series, sorry to burst your bubble but it isn’t. However, the announcement is most likely related to the upcoming phones.

The news about the announcement was first posted on Twitter by Pete Lau, the founder and CEO of OnePlus, and the tweet includes an image of the earth taken from the moon as well as a link to a page with the title “moonshot”.

The image is actually a teaser for OnePlus’s partnership with Hasselblad as it was taken with a Hasselblad camera from the Apollo 11 spacecraft. A leak from a few weeks ago had revealed that OnePlus partnered with the camera giant for its new flagship phone, the OnePlus 9 Pro.

Next week’s announcement is expected to shed light on the collaboration between the two companies. It has also been reported that OnePlus will announce the launch date for the OnePlus 9 series next week. The source of the info is Max Jambor who is known for his reliable OnePlus-related leaks.

The OnePlus 9 series will have three phones – a pro model, a standard model, and a more affordable version with a yet-to-be-confirmed official name. The standard and pro models are reported to have a Snapdragon 888 chipset while the third phone will have a less-powerful chipset. All three phones will run Android 11 out of the box.

HUAWEI Nova 5T is getting the EMUI 11 Global Stable update

Recently, Huawei has been rolling out the stable updates of the EMUI 11 Globally for many of its devices. The 2019 P30 series of flagships recently got the update and now is the turn of the Huawei Nova 5T.

Huawei Nova 5T

Courtesy of Huawei Central, the Chinese giant is rolling out a new update to the HUAWEI Nova 5T. This update has the firmware version EMUI 11.0.0.138 and weighs 1.94GB in size. Accordingly, the device gets upgraded to the latest EMUI 11.

Huawei has lived up to the promise of upgrading the devices promptly despite an ongoing tussle with the US. The Nova 5T was supposed to receive it sometime in Q1 2021 and it has finally got the update. If you don’t know, this is the second major EMUI update for the device.

To recall, Huawei launched the Nova 5T back in August 2019. The device came with EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9 Pie. Thanks to the company’s swift action, it got the first major update to EMUI 10 in 2020.

Coming back, this update includes the usual All Scenario Concept of EMUI 11 and brings updates to NotePad & Photo sharing Privacy, Gallery, ringtones, UI animation, multiwindow mode, and more. You can check out over coverage on the EMUI 11 to know about the entire list of features.

The UI is still based on Android 10 and has access to the Huawei Mobile Services(HMS) instead of GMS. Huawei has already announced the plan of updating the flagships to its HarmonyOS and one of the first to get it will be the HUAWEI Mate X2.

Let’s see if the company is generous enough to bring the update to devices like Huawei Nova 5T since it also has a flagship chipset from 2019.

Cases and Screen Protectors are a thing for smartwatches and Here’s Why you Should get One

More than a year ago, my Amazfit Bip Watch fell off the table and landed flat on its face. It was vibrating and it kept shifting to the edge till it eventually fell. When I picked it up, the screen was cracked and a portion of the display was messed up.

In my search for a replacement screen, which I didn’t find, I found that there were screen protectors and cases for the Amazfit Bip. If I had either or both, my watch would most likely have survived that fall. You can be sure the first accessory I bought when my wife gifted me a new smartwatch was a case.

Smartwatch screen protector and case featured

Screen protectors and cases are not only for phones and tablets

Screen protectors and protective cases are accessories associated with mobile phones and tablets. However, following the popularity of smartwatches, these accessories are now being made for wearables.

So should you get a screen protector and or case for your smartwatch?

We think you should for the following reasons:

Much-Needed protection

We know the chances of a watch falling from your wrist is very slim, however, falls are not the only things you are protecting your smartwatch from. A lot of watches don’t have a scratch-resistant screen and some watches have cases that are made from materials that are prone to scratches. The addition of a case and or screen protector provides much-needed protection from these unfortunate occurrences.

Better second-hand value

If you have ever had to buy a used device, one of the factors you pay attention to is the appearance of the device. Used devices for sale are even graded on their appearance, thus, the newer looking a device is, the higher the price it will go for. If you intend to sell your smartwatch in the future, a case and or screen protector is a sensible investment as it will protect your device and help you to get a better offer when you are ready to sell.

Adds style

Just as there are different types of cases for phones, so also do you have a variety of cases for smartwatches. Some cases give a watch that otherwise has a classic design, a sports-like look. While others give a bland-looking smartwatch, a bit of color. These cases are also pretty cheap, so you can pick up multiple colors or designs to match your watch strap and give your smartwatch a new look, whenever you feel like it.

Conclusion

So you see, cases and screen protectors are not only important and necessary accessories for your smartphones but also for your smartwatches.

Do you use a screen protector or case for your smartwatch? Let us know in the comment box below.
