Xiaomi see impressive growth in Q3 2020, while Huawei faces a notable decline

With the holiday season being right around the corner, a new report regarding the state of the global smartphone market has revealed some interesting details. Despite the initial impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, Xiaomi has seen impressive growth year on year in Q3 2020, while Huawei has faced a sizeable decline during the same period.

Xiaomi Logo Co-founder Lei Jun

According to a Gartner report, the overall smartphone market saw a decline of 5.7 percent year on year from back in 2019. This brought total smartphone shipments down to 366 million units, although, it is still a recovery from the first half of this year. The primary reason for the initial slump was the COVID-19 outbreak, but its impacts can still be left in the third quarter. The report revealed that Samsung still lead the market followed by Huawei, but Apple was overtaken by Xiaomi for the third spot.

The South Korean tech giant saw a negligible growth of 2.2 percent in this quarter over 2019 but the most notable jump in numbers was from Xiaomi, with a 34.9 percent increase in handset shipments. Xiaomi shipped over 44 million units in this quarter over 32 million from back in 2019. Another Chinese OEM, Oppo, rounded the top 5 smartphone manufacturers also a minimal decline of 2.3 percent.

Xiaomi

The decline in Huawei was rather expected considering its current situation with the US government. The company faced reinforced sanctions a couple of months prior, which caused a disrupt in its supply chain. As per Anshul Gupta, senior research director at Gartner, “For the first time this year, smartphone sales to end users in three of the top five markets i.e., India, Indonesia and Brazil increased, growing 9.3%, 8.5% and 3.3%, respectively.” He further added that “Consumers are limiting their discretionary spend even as some lockdown conditions have started to improve.”

[Updated: Official Clarification] Huawei Mate 40 series to be the first receive to HarmonyOS beta update

Update: Earlier today we had reported on the date of the coming HarmonyOS update but the company has clarified that HOS will be available on Dec 16th for developers to use, as confirmed at the HDC event. So, it won’t be rolling out to specific models in December.

HarmonyOS, the proprietary operating system from Huawei, is finally arriving on smartphones. Its beta version will be available from 16th December 2020 and the Mate 40 series will be the first to receive the upgrade.

Huawei

The news arrived after Mai Yumin, Vice President of Huawei’s software department, made the announcement that the beta for HarmonyOS (or HongMeng OS in China) will be arriving on smartphones on December 16, as per a MyDrivers report. The executive also added that the flagship Mate 40 series will be the first priority for the update. For those unaware, the company is also planning on gradually replacing the Android platform with HarmonyOS.

Although, support for Android applications is also possible, but would depend on the new OS. Another official had also previously stated that more than 90 percent of Huawei handset models that are currently available on the market will be updated to HarmonyOS, but it remains to be seen if that would actually be the case in the near future.

Huawei

At the moment, the new OS from the Chinese tech giant has seen in many other products apart from smartphones. This includes certain iterations in automobiles and IoT (internet of things) products. Huawei had built the new system with seamless cross platform connectivity in mind. There is not a lot of information to go on currently, so stay tuned for more updates regarding the coming update.

Both devices are feature phones but the Nokia 8000 4G comes with a cool design which still doesn’t remove the fact that it is a feature phone. Nokia didn’t disclose details on the availability but a Russian blog has now revealed that the new Nokia feature phones are currently up for pre-order in Russia. Nokia 8000 4G

The Nokia 8000 4G carries a price tag of RUB 7,500 (€83.2) in Russia while the Nokia 6300 4G comes in at RUB 5,000 (€55.5).  The two models run on KaiOS which brings several functionalities that you wouldn’t find in other non-KaiOS-powered phones like WhatsApp, Google’s Maps and Assistant. Apple iPhone 12 Pro teardown reveals majority of South Korean parts

Apple has been trying to reduce its dependence on China as much as possible. While the company’s contract manufacturers are expanding production in other countries, such as India, the tech giant’s list of suppliers is also changing.

In a recent teardown of the newly launched iPhone 12 Pro, it is found that components made by South Korean companies account for almost 27 percent of the phone’s value. This indicates a significant increase of 9.1 percent points compared to last year.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Teardown

It’s noteworthy that the share of South Korean-made components is more than the total combined share of parts made in the United States. The report reveals that the cost of a high-end iPhone 12 Pro is $406 and components from South Korea and the United States account for 26.8 percent and 21.9 percent by value, respectively.

This is mainly because of the company’s decision to adopt OLED screen panels for the new iPhone models, which are supplied by Samsung Display and LG Display, both from South Korea and leaders in the category.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Components Share

Apart from the OLED panels, Samsung is also supplying memory chips to Apple for the iPhone 12 models. Another key supplier for the company is Japan-based Sony that provides three camera lenses, priced around $5.4 or $7.4 each.

Coming to the battery, it is reported that the phone’s battery capacity has been cut by 10 percent, likely to make space for additional parts as the iPhone now comes with support for 5G connectivity. The battery cells are supplied by Amperex Technology Ltd. (ATL), which is a Hong Kong-based subsidiary of Japan’s TDK.

Chinese-made components accounted for less than 5 percent of the total by value. This could be because of the rising trade tensions amid the US-China trade war. Because of that, Apple is trying to move out production to other regions.

Britain telcos could face hefty fine for using suppliers like Huawei

The UK government has introduced The Telecommunications (Security) Bill which, it claims will boost the security standards of the country’s telecom networks. It is aimed at forcing companies to remove equipment from high-risk vendors.

As a part of this new law, reported by Reuters, telecom companies in Britain could be fined up to 10 percent of the company’s turnover or 100,000 pounds (approximately $133,140) per day if they contravene the ban on using equipment made by suppliers like Huawei.

Huawei Logo

Commenting on this, Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “This groundbreaking bill will give the UK one of the toughest telecoms security regimes in the world and allow us to take the action necessary to protect our networks.”

In response to this bill, Huawei Vice President Victor Zhang said that the “decision is politically motivated and not based on a fair evaluation of the risks. It does not serve anyone’s best interests as it would move Britain into the digital slow lane and put at risk the Government’s leveling up agenda.”

The development comes just days after Huawei’s Vice President Victor Zhang had urged UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to reconsider the decision to ban Huawei from the 5G network development and said that it will worsen England’s north-south divide.

For those who are unaware, the United Kingdom banned Huawei, the world’s leading telecom equipment manufacturer, from taking part in the country’s 5G infrastructure development, bowing down to the pressure from the United States.

It has also asked all the telecom companies in the UK to get rid of Huawei’s equipment from their infrastructure by 2027. This is because there are concerns that Huawei’s equipment could be used by China for spying. However, Huawei has denied all such allegations related to its security.

[UPDATED]Apple iPad Pro with Mini LED and OLED displays to launch next year

UPDATE: Apple leaker (0-0-0) and DSC’s Ross Young say that OLEDs for iPad Pro is not happening in 2021. It may happen in 2022.

Original story below..

Apple has been making significant changes to its devices and after the Mac lineup, the next in line is the iPad Pro series. While the suggested changes in the upcoming iPad Pro isn’t as drastic as we saw on Mac devices, they are quite interesting.

The Cupertino-based giant has been rumored to be working on a Mini LED display which the company is expected to adopt for most of its devices. Now, it is being said that the first device to have a Mini LED display panel is the iPad Pro.

Apple iPad Pro 2020
Apple iPad Pro 2020

As per the report, the iPad Pro featuring a Mini LED display panel will get unveiled in the first half of 2021. Not just that, it is said that the company is also working on an OLED panel for the iPad Pro, which will be unveiled in the second half of next year.

It is also being reported that Apple will be sourcing OLED panels from Samsung Display and LG Display. Both these companies are also providing OLED panels to Apple for the iPhone 12 models launched last month.

EDITOR’S PICK: Panasonic launches its first transparent commercial OLED displays, 55-inch panels made by LG

The report goes on to add that Apple will actively start using Mini LED panels for the iPad lineup next year and will then gradually start using the same screen type for MacBook as well as the iMac lineup. But there is no specific timeline available for the development.

Previous reports have indicated that the tech giant is likely to source Mini LED panels from Epistar. There are also reports that the company could also get similar panels from China-based San’an Optoelectronics, which could enter Apple’s supply chain by 2022 after beginning production and getting certified by mid-2021.

Mini-LED seems like a transitional technology for the upcoming micro-LED on which the Cupertino-based giant has been working for a few years now. Apple reportedly started working on it back in 2018 at a manufacturing facility in California. However, it is said that we won’t see micro-LED displays on a smartphone until 2023 at the earliest.

Xiaomi’s new 55W fast charger receives 3C certification

A new Xiaomi charger with up to 55W fast charging support has received approval from the 3C authority of China. It appears that Xiaomi’s high-end phones arriving next year will come equipped with this new charger.

The new charger that has surfaced at 3C has an MDY-12-EQ model number. The chargers support charging rates such as 5V/2A, 9V/3A, 20V/2.5A, and 11V/5A. The leakster who spotted the 3C listing has claimed that the upcoming mid-to-high-end phones from Xiaomi will feature the 55W fast charger. Even Redmi phones arriving next year will feature the new rapid charger.

Xiaomi 55W fast charger 3C certified

In February, Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro 5G smartphones. The vanilla model came with a 30W charger, whereas the Pro model came with a 50W charger. The Xiaomi Mi 10T series flagships that debuted in the second half of the year came with 33W fast charge support. The Mi 10 Ultra arrived with 120W superfast charging support.

There is a possibility that the newly spotted 55W fast charger could be first seen with the Xiaomi Mi 11 series. Rumors have it that Mi 11 series may go official as early as January 2021. It is expected to debut as China’s first phone powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 875 chipset.

Redmi is expected to unleash the Redmi K40 Pro flagship in Q1 2021. It will be succeeding the Redmi K30 Pro that came with 33W fast charging support. There is a possibility that the K40 Pro may accompany a 50W or 55W fast charger. Hopefully, the rumor mill will soon spill the charging capabilities of the upcoming Xiaomi and Redmi flagships.

Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro might get Android 11 as news of internal testing surfaces

The Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro both launched last year with Android 9 Pie out of the box. For a few months now, the two phones have begun receiving the MIUI 12 update which brings with it Android 10. Technically, this should be their last Android OS upgrade but new reports say that they may actually get an Android 11 update.

The info comes from a screenshot of a conversation shared by Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd), an Indian leaker. The conversation is from an unofficial Xiaomi & MIUI news Telegram group, and it says that Xiaomi has begun Android 11 internal tests for the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Seeing as it is not an official statement, we advise our readers to take it with a pinch of salt. So, until more details surface, and from an official source, don’t get your hopes up.

The possibility of Xiaomi (or Redmi) releasing Android 11 for the two phones seems low as Redmi Note phones usually get one Android OS upgrade but at least two MIUI upgrades. This means that Android 10 should be the only OS upgrade the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro will get but the image above says otherwise.

If it turns out to be true, we don’t expect the updates to arrive until much later next year. Xiaomi has several phones that are scheduled to get Android 11 as their first OS upgrade, so these devices will get priority over the Redmi Note 8 series.

If it turns out that the phones will not get Android 11, you can be rest assured that they will get MIUI 13 which should have some of the new features that Android 11 brings.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a 6.53-inch FHD+ screen, an Helio G90T processor, 64MP quad rear cameras, a 20MP selfie camera, and a 4500mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. The standard Redmi Note 8 has a smaller 6.3-inch FHD+ screen, a Snapdragon 665 processor, 48MP quad rear cameras, a 13MP selfie camera, and a 4000mAh battery that also supports 18W fast charging.
