OnePlus confirms that the Made In India OnePlus 8 series will arrive by May end

OnePlus is finally set on launching its OnePlus 8 series in India, but this time, the latest series has been made in India (Noida factory) and will available by the end of May, according to a company official.

The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro were launched back in April 2020. However, the actual availability of the smartphone was a bit unknown in the Indian market, due to the uncertain mandatory lockdown period that had been employed by the local government because of the Coronavirus pandemic. However, the lockdown period is now expected to be relaxed to a certain degree, so an imminent launch was rumored.

But now, Vikas Agarwal, General Manager of OnePlus India, has stated that the initial reception the latest flagship series has been very positive in the country and “We are expecting it to transition into robust sales in the coming months. The OnePlus 8 series will be available in the Indian market by May end.” According to the senior official, the company’s Noida factory has resumed operations, “in line with safety regulations laid out by the government.”

Furthermore, OnePlus has also restarted its doorstep repair services, which are also in compliance with the government specified health standards and guidelines. As of right now, the customer service centers across 18 cities are now running again. The OnePlus 8 series has been positively received across the globe. Although, it remains to be seen how well it performs in India, especially after the noticeable price hike over previous generations.

Huawei Mate 40 Concept Render reveals a 5 camera setup and overflow display

The Huawei Mate 40 was recently spotted in a new leaked concept render. The new device will be the Chinese tech giant’s latest flagship, with the design showcasing a  camera setup alongside a curved edge display.

Huawei

Looking at the concept render, the Huawei Mate 40 features a penta camera setup on the rear in a circular module. This ring camera system is similar to the one sported on the Mate 30 series and is also in line with various design leaks that we had previously covered. Moving to the front, a full screen body can be observed with no punch hole or popup selfie camera being visible. This may imply that the Mate 40 will be the first Huawei smartphone to feature an under display camera.

Another interesting aspect regarding the leaked concept render is the display. The Mate 40 in the images sports a large curved edge display on the front, which features an indiscernible notch and chin. The display rounds the sides of the device and is curved around the edges. A USB Type C port is also housed in the bottom, flanked by a lone speaker grill, and a SIM card slot.

Huawei

Unfortunately, this concept render is still just a leak, and can very likely be false in more ways than one. Huawei has yet to provide any official details regarding its upcoming premium flagship, so take this report with a grain of salt. But stay tuned, as more information is expected to arrive in the coming few weeks.

Huawei P40 Pro Review: The BEST 2020 Camera Phone

For many, Huawei is currently a troubled smartphone company. The brand has been targeted by the US as well as other countries since 2019. In fact, Huawei is currently banned from using technology or components from any US companies, including software from Google.

This caused some trouble for the world’s second-largest smartphone maker. But it’s not as bad as you think.

Huawei P40 Pro (5)

If you look at the figures, Huawei was the only major Chinese smartphone brand to grow in sales in the first quarter of 2020 in China, though Chinese smartphone sales dropped by an unprecedented 22% during the same period due to Covid-19 outbreak. Amazingly Huawei saw a 6% rise to 28.7 million phones, capturing a 39% share of total smartphone sales.

So it’s clear that Huawei wants to fight back and its latest smartphone, the Huawei P40 Pro is going to be a strong weapon in this fight. So, let’s take a deeper look at the Huawei P40 Pro and what it brings to the table. The phone has several USPs to take on the big players in the market and is currently the best camera smartphone on DxOMark.

Huawei P40 Pro Display

Huawei P40 Pro (3)

The display of the P40 Pro looks amazing right from the start. Huawei designers redesigned the curved edges for maximum display coverage. They call it the Quad-curve overflow display. But if we look at it closely, although it does reach a wonderful visual experience, the hole-punch of the dual cameras still leads to an imperfection that we have to accept. Without the hole, the display would have been perfect to look at.

selfie camera

That said, having two selfie shooters upfront does have its advantages. The selfie cameras have an excellent aperture of f/2.2 and support auto-focus even in 4K video. So, if you are looking for a smart vlogging device with great selfie cameras, the quality of the front cameras should offset the slight imperfection in its looks for most people.

Another feature of the front cameras is that it supports facial ID IR unlock which is very secure.

Huawei P40 Pro (4)

As for the display quality, the P40 Pro features a 6.58-inch OLED display with a 2640 x 1200 resolution, which is close to the 2K resolution and much better than 1080P smartphones. Compared to the last model of the P30 Pro, the clarity and color accuracy is also improved a lot. But pay attention here, the most accurate color mode is the standard color mode. Under the standard mode, the average delta E is only 1.0 and the P3 gamut coverage reaches 99%. In addition, the P40 Pro display has a 90Hz refresh rate. Working with the Kirin 990 Soc, so far, the P40 Pro is one of the most fluid Android phones I’ve tested.

Coming to its back cover, Huawei updated the phone with a new industrial design including the technology of Anti-glazing glass and a new arrangement of the quad-cameras. The P40 Pro in our hand is not the silver version with anti-glazing glass, but I love the silver version which I tried out at the Huawei store in China. The silver variant has such a comfortable touch feeling and amazing reflection effect under all lighting scenarios. It felt like and looked like the Rear material of the OnePlus 8 Pro, which is also using the anti-glazing glass technology.

So I prefer that silver model over this Deep Sea Blue color. That said, the Blue color model that I have will satisfy most users who are looking for a dark shade.

Huawei P40 Pro Hardware

The Huawei P40 Pro runs on Huawei’s latest Soc, the Kirin 990 5G. Though the Kirin 990 may not be able to defeat the Snapdragon 865 in most benchmark apps, it is hard to sense the gap between these two chips in daily use. And thanks to the optimization of the hardware and software, the P40 Pro is able to make full use of the 90Hz display in some games.

For example, in PUBG Mobile china version, it supports the 90fps mode and in our gaming test, it did run an average framerate of 89.5 without obvious jank problem.

And then we moved to the 3D mark tests to check out its GPU performance. The results showed that the P40 Pro can defeat 98% of all the tested phones. From the tests we did, the P40 Pro did match our expectations for a 2020 flagship. Although it’s not a gaming phone, Huawei still designed a gaming phone case for the P40 Pro. With the case on, you will have two more shoulder buttons to have a more comfortable gaming operation. Even so, the gaming experience isn’t going to be the USP of the P40 Pro. Because the best part of the Huawei P40 Pro is its cameras.

You can check out our detailed gaming performance test in the review video added at the start of the article.

Huawei P40 Pro Cameras

The most important selling point of the P40 Pro is still the cameras. And this time the camera setup is a bit aggressive. This means the phone features a large-sized lens, a larger CMOS sensor for the primary camera, and feature-rich camera arrangement. All of these changes have made it become one of our most anticipated camera phones in 2020.

Huawei P40 Pro (1)

First is the 50MP customized main camera with a 1/1.28 inches sensor, matching with the RYYB CFA, allowing 40% light to be absorbed by the sensor. The new sensor can provide not just better sensitivity but also better light capture, which means it is capable of handling even poor lighting conditions. And we will show how good it performs with the camera samples added in this review.

But it’s not just the primary camera, the 40MP ultra-wide cine-camera is another important upgrade. It is designed not just for wide-angle photography but also for movie filming. Like the primary camera, it can also shoot up to 4K 60fps video to simulate the production of a cine camera.

camera preview

And then, to cover a wider range of focus, the P40 Pro is equipped with one more 12MP 5-time optical telephoto camera, which uses the RYYB periscope structure and OIS anti-shaking technology. So, these three cameras actually try to simulate a practical zoom camera. If we consider more practical camera movement, the OIS anti-shaking of the telephoto camera and the primary camera helps a lot when panning or tilting, but due to the lack of smooth switching between cameras, camera zooming on the P40 Pro doesn’t achieve the same result as professional cameras can do.

If you want to take some zooming shots, just make sure that the zooming range stays from 0.8 to 8.5 times, or it stays over 8.5 times. Because you will notice the change in resolution when you switch between these zoom ranges.

And the last camera is a ToF camera, which assists the other cameras to calculate depth information. It will help improve focusing speed and optimize the bokeh effect.

Let’s look at some samples.

Well, I have to say the P40 Pro is definitely the best phone for photography. Not just because it has the best primary camera, but also the best secondary cameras. Huawei has given us the best results they’ve developed. The white balance is much more accurate than the last few generations of Huawei flagships. And thanks to the larger sensor, all the samples shot by the main camera were able to produce amazing exposure latitude. For example, in these few samples, the exposure took good care of both brightness and shadow areas and especially saved great detail of shadows.

Saturation has always been the strength of Huawei phones. That’s no exception for the P40 Pro. The 40MP wide-angle cine camera also did a good job as the main camera. The wide-angle image quality was even better than some other flagships’ main camera. Generally, on most smartphones, shooting a wide-angle photo would give me a sense of isolation due to the hardware gap between a primary camera and a wide-angle camera. Usually, it was revealed as different resolutions, diverse applicable camera settings, different image colors, and the shooting experience gap. But on the P40 Pro, this feeling was almost gone. You don’t have to think of the best settings for the wide-angle camera, and the image quality was also wonderful. It’s just like a second primary camera with a wider view.

And the 5x optical telephoto camera was far more practical than the P30 Pro. With the help of the OIS anti-shaking, it’s pretty easy to hold it in hands and shoot perfect long-focus photos with stable preview. Another highlight of the camera performance is night mode. This time Huawei upgraded their night-scene solution. In the last few Huawei flagships, maybe you would see amazing brightness improvement when turn on the night mode. The new solution made it become much smarter. The higher brightness has been done in the normal mode. If we turn on the night mode, the Ai will help us balance the exposure of the whole image and make sure there is no color deviation problem which was an issue with the P30 Pro.

Thanks to the ToF camera, Huawei’s aperture mode is more accurate for distance detection. Under the aperture mode, we were able to adjust the bokeh effect after the shooting, which gives us a second chance to get what exactly we want.

In addition, Huawei also provided some interesting filters including 3 Leica filters and several other emotional filters. You can use these filters to change the mood of your shots, giving you greater creative freedom.

About its filming capability – check out our review video above to see the video sample.

You can get all the original camera samples from here.

Note that I have one complaint about the device. When we shoot photos on the P40 Pro, the preview image was not as good as what the phone can really produce. It’s less clear and less detailed. It’s not a big problem, but sometimes the inconsistency would affect my confidence to press the shutter button. And eventually, I found that my worries were unnecessary. The phone managed to capture crisp images even if they didn’t look too good in the preview window.

Huawei P40 Pro Battery Life

About the battery and charging, the P40 Pro is also at the flagship level. 25-min charging with the included 40W charger can bring back 50% power, and it took only 1-hour to get it full-charged. And it also supports up to 27W wireless charging.

Huawei P40 Pro Battery
Huawei P40 Pro Battery

As for software, Huawei’s AppGallery has a number of Google app alternatives like Here Maps. But there still might be some apps missing which can be downloaded via alternate apps stores like Amazon app store and even APK Pure. Using these three apps stores together, we could use most of the popular apps found on the Play store.

So that’s the end of our Huawei P40 Pro review. There’s no doubt that the P40 Pro is the best camera phone that we’ve seen so far in 2020, and shooting photos on the P40 Pro is both easy and satisfying. The phone has everything you need from a 2020 flagship and if you are okay with using Google App alternatives, we would definitely recommend this device to everyone who’s looking for a powerful camera smartphone.

Motorola Edge Plus will receive at least two Android OS updates (Android 12)

Motorola returned to making flagship smartphones with the recently launched Motorola Edge Plus. The handset ships with Android 10 out of the box. The company now promises at least two Android OS updates (up to Android 12) for the device.

Motorola Edge+

Android updates and Motorola are not heard of together in recent years. The company is poor in updating its devices regularly and on time. But it was not like this a few years back. The OEM used to be one of the first brands to roll out security patches and Android OS updates.

Hopefully, it will return to its old glorious days with the new initiative. The Motorola Edge Plus starts at $999, which is definitely not cheap. The company must provide at least two Android platform updates to this handset like any other brand. So it is definitely not worth bragging about.

Anyway, this is just a promise (marketing stunt) and the company has to yet prove it. Motorola is known for leaving out Moto G4 Plus for Android Oreo although it was promised at the launch. After criticism, it did release the update but maintained the phone was supposed to receive the update.

On the other hand, we have another premium device from the brand called Motorola Razr, which just received its Android 10 update. Being the world’s first clamshell foldable smartphone costing $1499, it should have launched with the latest software in the first place.

Unlike the Edge Plus, the Razr will be receiving one more major update and that would be Android 11 whose public beta is expected to be announced on June 3.

Apple encourages Chinese supplier to rival Foxconn by raising investment

Apple has recently advised one of its known Chinese suppliers to boost its investment. The Cupertino giant has apparently asked Luxshare-ICT, an assembler of its AirPods, to invest in metal cases for its iPhones and MacBooks. This move is aimed to create another alternative against its longtime existing Taiwanese supplier, Foxconn.

Apple

Luxshare-ICT is a Chinese technology based company, that in recent times has seen fast growth thanks to its aggressive strategies. The firm is currently in talks with Catcher Technology, which is the second largest supplier of metal enclosures in the world. This move will likely help it broaden its horizons with the orders it can undertake, like the metallic iPhone and MacBook casings.

If the agreement goes through, Luxshare will be able to produce high-quality cover for smartphones and also gain access to knowledge of assembling iPhones. This would essentially bring it close to Foxconn and make it a direct competitor in the same field. As of right now, Foxconn is one of the largest suppliers within the electronics products supply chain. Thus, Luxshare’s added investment can enable to gain some footings in Apple’s product lineup assembly.

Foxconn is also Apple’s largest supplier and has worked with the company ever since the first iPhone launched back in 2007, accounting for more than 50 percent of all iPhone production since. However, it seems that the American company now wishes to reduce its reliance on the supplier and look into other producers as well. According to a source, “Apple is encouraging Luxshare to invest. The reason is to hire a competitive Chinese assembler to counterbalance the Taiwanese assemblers. The more Apple has qualified suppliers, the more bargaining power it will have.” Taiwanese companies have dominated the electronic contract manufacturing sector for decades.”

DJI Mavic Air 2 suffers from a serious issue with its 8K Hyperlapse feature

The DJI Mavic Air 2 is the company’s latest unmanned drone in the more affordable Mavic Air series. It was recently announced with one of its highlighting features being the 8K hyperlapse capture. But unfortunately, it seems like the Mavic Air 2 currently suffers from some serious issues during the 8K hyperlapse mode.

For those unaware, the hyperlapse feature was first introduced for the Mavic 2 series of drones and allowed users to take a series of images while the drone is flying. These images are then combined into a time lapse videos with motion, with all of the processing being handled by the drone itself. This results in a few very picturesque and interesting captures.

In the Mavic Air 2, the drone is capable of hyperlapse in 8K through its 48 megapixel camera. Although, it suffers from a few major issues, including a large amount of shake is visible in the captured video, which is only found in the 8K footage and not in 1080p. Furthermore, DJI hasn’t offered hyperlapse in 4K for some unknown reason along with a prolonged 6 second gap in between 8K shots, in comparison to just 2 seconds on 1080p video capture.

DJI Mavic Air 2

The issues don’t end there, as the 8K hyperlapse can sometimes get corrupted. The reason for this is the method of capture, as the DJI Mavic Air 2 uses four 12 megapixel photos stitched together from its 48 megapixel camera. This sometimes results in a few video editing softwares not being able to detect or display up to 2 of the 4 stitched images, with Adobe Premiere Pro being the only program running the footage as intended.

Meizu 17 Pro 120Hz refresh rate update is live with DC dimming, HDR playback, and more

A couple of days back, Meizu announced the arrival of 120Hz refresh rate for Meizu 17 Pro via OTA update. Now, it is finally here along with some other additional features. However, the update is only available for media review units for now. In fact, the update is titled as ‘Media Review Device System Update’.

Meizu 120Hz Refresh Rate Update

The first major update for Meizu 17 Pro comes with build number Flyme 8.1.1.0A and weighs 803.84MB in size. The update not only bumps up the screen refresh rate but also brings DC Dimming and more.

Here’s a summary of the update that is being rolled out to media review units of Meizu 17 Pro in China.

  • Adds 120Hz refresh rate option, in addition to 90Hz
  • Adds DC Dimming feature
  • Adds easy access to the 129° ultra-wide camera
  • Adds HDR video playback
  • Adds fast charging while screen turned on

It is interesting why Meizu did not mention anything about 120Hz refresh at the launch. Anyway, it is now available along wit DC Dimming, which should have been present out of the box.

Another notable addition is an option in the camera app to directly switch to the ultra-wide lens. For the unaware, the Flyme camera app uses a swipe mechanism to switch between different cameras, which is not an ideal solution for all users.

Meizu 17 Pro 120Hz OTA Update Media Review Device

The update also brings HDR playback support and fast charging when the display is turned on. The former feature is expected to be available by default but Meizu is just rolling it out now.

As for the latter, the Meizu 17 Pro has probably become the first-ever smartphone from the company to support fast charging while the screen is active. None of the prior devices from the brand support it, however, the previous generation flagships might get this feature via OTA update in the future.

Anyway, as mentioned in the beginning, this update is exclusive to media review units. It will be rolled out to regular retail units soon.

Huawei Kirin 1000 SoC manufactured using 5nm process to launch this year

Huawei Kirin 990 5G is the current flagship chipset in the market which is powering the high-end smartphones coming from Huawei and Honor. Now, the company is working on its successor and some key details about the upcoming chipsets have surfaced online.

A new leak from the investment plan of TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) confirms that the upcoming flagship chipset from Huawei is named Kirin 1000. It is also revealed that the chipset will be manufactured by TSMC using its 5nm process.

Huawei Kirin 1000 SoC Leak

It is said that this flagship processor will be powering the Huawei Mate 40 series of smartphones which are set to get launched in the second half of this year. While the exact launch date is not yet known, the phones are expected to go official in September.

Further, it has also been leaked that the next year’s flagship chipset is named Kirin 1100 and is expected to be based on 5NM+ technology, which is an improved version of the 5NM. There’s no certainty about the launch plans for Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 1100 but it should be launched along with Mate 50 series next year.

Huawei Kirin Processor

The Huawei Kirin 1000 will feature ARM Cortex-A77 cores instead of the Cortex-A76 cores present in the Kirin 990. The A77 brings a 20 percent improvement in performance and with the switch to a smaller node size, that improvement in performance should be higher. The company had began trial production of this processor last year.

Last month, the Chinese giant launched Huawei Kirin 985 chipset which is positioned between the flagship Kirin 990 and mid-range Kirin 820 chipset, and will be aimed at device priced under 3000 Yuan.

It comes with an integrated 5G modem alongside the new Mali-G77 GPU. It has dual-core NPU which has been specifically designed for improvements on “processing power, communication capabilities, thermal and structural design.” The processor has reportedly crossed the 380,000 mark on AnTuTu benchmark ratings.
