Google developing Game Device Certification program for gaming phones

Gaming smartphones have become quite popular and now have their own small but growing category. The gaming smartphone category can be classified into two. There are the flagships such as the ASUS ROG II, Black Shark 2 Pro, Nubia Red Magic 3S and Razer Phone 2. There are also mid-range gaming smartphones such as the Redmi Note 8 Pro.

There will be more gaming phones as time goes on and Google wants to make sure that these devices are powerful enough and “behave in a predictable way” for game developers. Hence the development of a Game Device Certification program.

The guys at XDA-Developers were able to get a copy of the latest version of Google’s GMS (Google Mobile Suites) Requirements for OEMs and ODMs which lists the requirements smartphone manufacturers must meet before being allowed to install GMS on their devices. It was discovered that the document now has a new section titled “Gaming Device Certification”.

Google Game Device Certification

The document rivals that for a device to have the Gaming Device Certification then it must meet a number of requirements. Below are some of the requirements:

  • Predictable Performance: Devices that are certified need to behave in a predictable way so that developers don’t face occurrences such as throttling, loss of CPU cores, and other unusual system behaviors.
  • Correct and high-performance GPU behavior: Certified devices are required to have modern and up to date high-performance GPUs and display APIs and enable reasonable frame introspection.
  • Memory behavior and requirements: Certified devices must provide access to memory in a predictable way. Games should be able to allocate reasonable amounts of memory and not have their processes unexpectedly killed. Certified Devices must allow a minimum of 2300MB of memory to be allocated before the lowmemorykilller kills the process.
  • Also, the device must support Vulkan 1.1 and pass the newest version of dEQP.

Google seems to have already set up a team that will handle this judging by a job listing a few months ago for a Developer Relations Manager for Android Game Device Certification.

Google Game Device Certification Job listing

The job responsibilities listed include the hiring and managing of the game device certification team, working closely with Android Certification teams, working closely with OEMs and SOC Vendors to drive standardization and define requirements, and working closely with game developers to understand their needs and create tests that validate the requirements.

There is no device at the moment that has received the Game Device Certification since Google has not even officially unveiled the program. It is believed that when Google eventually does announce it, it will also release a continually updated list of certified devices just like it does for Android Enterprise Recommended devices.

Huawei’s 5G products expected to account for 50% of China’s 5G market in 2020

The Chinese authority commenced the issuance of 5G licenses in June this year. Presently, there are up to eleven 5G phones from different OEMs in China. The growth is expected to increase next year as more 5G phones and base stations sprout. China is expected to achieve the record of hosting the world’s largest 5G network. Huawei store logo official featured 03

In all this, the biggest winner will likely be Huawei as the tech giant is expected to corner 50% of the domestic 5G mobile phone share in 2020, according to a report by Chinese website Express Technology. The report reveals that Huawei is actively deploying 5G products, including 5G base stations, communication equipment, smart phones and servers, especially 5G smart phones. It is estimated that 50% of the domestic 5G mobile phone market will be taken by Huawei in 2020.

In addition, the server field is also a major focus of Huawei. Currently, Huawei ranks second in the domestic market with a market share of 17% to 19%. Due to the pressure from the United States, Huawei intends to exclude US manufacturers in the 5G supply chain, focusing on supporting non-US companies . In this process, TSMC and other companies will also benefit. TSMC’s advanced semiconductor process technology will be used by various OEMs on products like 5G procssor including Huawei’s Kirin series as well as on Quaalcomm chips and other products. TSMC has already been forced to speed up its 5nm manufacturing process by 5G demands. In 2020, TSMC’s performance in 5G is expected to account for 13% of its total revenue.

Samsung heir visits India, possibly to discuss 5G development

Samsung Electronics Vice-Chairman Lee Jae-yong arrived in India on Sunday sparking conjectures that the South Korean giant could invest further in the country to broaden its presence in the world’s second-largest smartphone market.

Lee arrived on Sunday and was briefed by Samsung Electronics officials in Mumbai over the company’s mobile business there, according to the sources. It is believed to be Lee’s first visit to India since March.

Industry sources speculated that Lee could hold a meeting with Mukesh Ambani, the chief of India’s leading conglomerate Reliance Industries, during his India visit. Lee is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani this week, reports Yonhap news agency.

Samsung is one of the equipment suppliers for Reliance Jio’s 4G network business. With the Indian telecom firm planning to establish a 5G network in the country, industry observers speculate that the two moguls may consult on the issue if there is a meeting. Chances are, there will be some interesting news to come out of this when it eventually happens.

Outside of 4G networking, the company has also been a big player in the Indian mobile space for a long time. In July last year, Samsung India set up one of the world’s largest mobile manufacturing facilities in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. PM Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in inaugurated the 35-acre Samsung Electronics facility.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro arrives in Singapore, requires an invite to purchase

Folks in Singapore will soon be able to purchase Huawei’s latest flagship Huawei Mate 30 Pro, though there are a surprising slew of caveats involved in the process.

First off, there’re only a limited number of Mate 30 Pros available — only 200 customers will be chosen to be part of an exclusive group who’ll be able to test out and purchase the phone in a private event. And if you do want to be one of the lucky few invited, you’ll have to first register your interest for the Mate 30 Pro on the Huawei website before Oct 16.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro

This variant of the Mate 30 Pro comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. It will be available in Black and Space Silver, at a retail price of S$1298. Huawei said the Mate 30 Pro is an “exclusive model” with limited quantities in the region, and only 200 people will be selected at random to purchase the device at a private event this month.

Anyone who buys a Mate 30 Pro during these events are entitled to a bunch accessories worth S$463. These consist of the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 Combo, a wireless car charger, a phone case and a power bank. The phone will also come with services, such as door-to-door repair pick-up and delivery for a year, two-year warranty, and a free screen replacement within the first three months of purchase.

If you can get past the fact that you won’t be able to use Google apps and services (though the loophole suddenly reopened again), then the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is one of the best devices currently available on the market.

Motorola One Macro leaked real-life images flaunt the design ahead of launch

Motorola seems intent on getting us confused with the naming of its phones that we won’t seem to notice they all look like each other. The Motorola One Action and One Zoom were both launched in quick succession recently. Now, the tech giant is set to launch the Motorola One Macro this week. Ahead of the launch, the real-life images of the One Macro have appeared online via MySmartPrice.

The leaked images confirm the design as contained in the renders that have leaked earlier on. The device packs a waterdrop notch display which reduced the bezel on the top. There is also a considerable amount of bezels at the bottom. The device comes with a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer at the bottom edge flanked by the speaker grille, and the secondary microphone.

The Motorola One Macro utilises a gradient finish on the rear panel which appears to be made of glass. The panel houses a quad-camera setup arranged vertically at the top left corner. Three of the camera sensors and an LED flash are encased in a module while a fourth sensor, likely the macro lens, is located at a separate module at the top. The volume rockers and power button are located at the right edge while the SIM slot is at the left.Motorola One Macro

The power button and the volume rocker are on the right side of the device while the SIM tray is on the left side. The fingerprint sensor here will be a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner embedded underneath the Motorola logo. Again, nothing new here and we will get to see the usual Motorola design language at the back.Motorola One Macro

On the internals, the Moto One Macro is expected to be fuelled by an Helio P60 chipset and it will come preloaded with Android 9 Pie OS. The handset is expected to arrive as an Android One device may pack a large-sized battery of 4,000mAh.
