Motorola One Macro leaked real-life images flaunt the design ahead of launch

Motorola seems intent on getting us confused with the naming of its phones that we won’t seem to notice they all look like each other. The Motorola One Action and One Zoom were both launched in quick succession recently. Now, the tech giant is set to launch the Motorola One Macro this week. Ahead of the launch, the real-life images of the One Macro have appeared online via MySmartPrice.

The leaked images confirm the design as contained in the renders that have leaked earlier on. The device packs a waterdrop notch display which reduced the bezel on the top. There is also a considerable amount of bezels at the bottom. The device comes with a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer at the bottom edge flanked by the speaker grille, and the secondary microphone.

The Motorola One Macro utilises a gradient finish on the rear panel which appears to be made of glass. The panel houses a quad-camera setup arranged vertically at the top left corner. Three of the camera sensors and an LED flash are encased in a module while a fourth sensor, likely the macro lens, is located at a separate module at the top. The volume rockers and power button are located at the right edge while the SIM slot is at the left.Motorola One Macro

The power button and the volume rocker are on the right side of the device while the SIM tray is on the left side. The fingerprint sensor here will be a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner embedded underneath the Motorola logo. Again, nothing new here and we will get to see the usual Motorola design language at the back.Motorola One Macro

On the internals, the Moto One Macro is expected to be fuelled by an Helio P60 chipset and it will come preloaded with Android 9 Pie OS. The handset is expected to arrive as an Android One device may pack a large-sized battery of 4,000mAh.

Live photos of Smartisan phone with quad rear cameras leaks

Smartisan has an event scheduled for October 31 where it is expected to announce a new smartphone made in collaboration with ByteDance. ByteDance is the company behind TikTok, the popular video-sharing platform.

Up until today, there has been no info regarding the device’s design or specs but thanks to a new leak we have what is our first look at the upcoming phone.

A photo was shared on Weibo earlier today by the leaker @Digital Chat Station and has been confirmed by Smartisan’s Luo Yonghao to be the phone co-developed by the two Chinese companies. The photo shows the phone with a quad-camera setup – three sensors arranged vertically while the fourth sensor and LED flash flanks them on the right. The camera setup is positioned on the left just like that of the iPhone 11 and Pixel 4. However, rather than a square housing, this is rectangular.

Smartisan Quad Camera phone

The picture also shows the bottom part of the phone where the manufacturer’s name and familiar red logo is visible. This confirms that the phone will have Smartisan’s branding and not ByteDance’.

There is no info on the camera configuration or the other specs of the phone. However, there are speculations it is not a flagship phone. So do not expect a Snapdragon 855 or Snapdragon 855+ processor inside.

The launch is still more than 3 weeks away and we believe more details will surface before it is unveiled. Nevertheless, it is good to see Smartisan is back in business following reports of financial troubles late last year. All its previous phones are still not available for purchase on its online store and may remain that way even after the launch of a new smartphone.

After the launch of Galaxy Note 10 lineup, Korean electronics giant, Samsung is done launching flagship smartphones for the current year. However, this means we can now direct our attention towards the Galaxy S11 which will succeed the Galaxy S10. Even though the said handset is not coming before early next year, we do have a little more specific details about its launch, thanks to a report published by Sammobile.samsung galaxy s10 plus

According to the source, the Galaxy S11 will be unveiled in the third week of February which is corresponding to the launch date of its predecessor. As observed with prior launch cycles, the highly anticipated flagship will be announced at an event in San Francisco. To be a little more specific, the Galaxy S11 lineup could debut on the 18th of February, 2020.

Launching the devices at this date will allow Samsung to grasp undivided attention of news and media ahead of the MWC 2020 which is scheduled to take place between 24th and 27th February.

While the launch of the Galaxy S11 lineup is still a couple of months away, reports and leaks about them have already started surfacing. The new smartphones are claimed to be the first smartphones to run on One UI 2.1 which will be based on Android 10.Samsung galaxy S10 series

Besides, they are also reported to have a faster fingerprint scanner, improved camera setup which includes 5X optical zoom sensor and 108 MP primary sensor. To top it all, they will be kitted with better chipsets possibly Exynos 9825 and Snapdragon 865 (expected to launch in December 2019).

While the claims seem legit, we will have to wait until more information is revealed via official sources.

Huawei HiCar lets you control your car with your smartphone

The latest and greatest feature out of the Huawei labs is the brand new Huawei HiCar. The name first appeared last August, where Huawei claimed they were developing a new feature that would essentially allow a user to control their car via smartphone. While at the time there were no specifics, the feature is now almost here and we’ve got more detail on just what exactly it does.

There are several features that Huawei HiCar makes available to the user. For starters, you can basically control most autonomous functions of your car from the app. This applies to things like air conditioning, windows, wipers and car locks. On top of that, it can also user the car’s cameras to take pictures or videos, which could be useful in a lot of ways. There’s also an option to share those pictures and videos, which isn’t as useful but still interesting.

When the smartphone and the car connect, the central control screen on the car will display the options available on special cards, such as those dedicated to planning reminders, navigating to a destination, playing music, answering calls and to the voice assistant functions. This central hub allows you to make changes easily and quickly. If you’re curious, the answer is no, you cannot drive your car with you smartphone.

This feature will be coming to the Mate 30 line of devices first, which is to be expected. According to Huawei however, only flagship devices from the company will be getting the feature from this point on, which essentially means just the Mate and P-series devices. It’s not very surprising, though we would’ve liked to see this feature on some of the cheaper devices as well.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro update brings camera and video optimizations

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is one of the more impressive devices available as of right now, and the company’s been consistently pushing out updates since its launch. The latest update brings new camera optimizations, as well as a few important fixes to things like dark mode and super slow motion video.

The update brings a few more touches to EMUI 10, with more lock screen styles now being available. The dark mode also got fixes, which means it now applies to more applications on the device. There’s a new AOD display feature which is essentially a screenscaver, and there’s even a fix for the Bluetooth compatibility as it seems the Huawei Mate 30 Pro was having trouble connecting with some cars.

Between this update and the news that the LZPlay workaround still works, things are looking up for Huawei Mate 30 Pro users. Huawei‘s future hinges on the success of this device, so it makes sense that the company would want to properly support the device to retain customers and avoid problems.

Earlier this week, the smartphones were put on sale in Malaysia and now they have made their way to Romania. Huawei’s slow roll out of the Huawei Mate 30 series has been allowed them to slowly adjust to all the problems they’ve been facing successfully. This has been one of the most interesting years for the company, and we’re eager to see what’s next.

Samsung might merge Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Note lineup suggests new patent

Until 2019, Samsung has had two lineups of high-end smartphones which include the ‘Galaxy S’ and ‘Galaxy Note’, however, with the introduction of the Galaxy Fold, it now has three. While the early generations of Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices had considerably different screen size, with the latest generation of smartphones that difference has reduced drastically.

For refernce, the Galaxy S10 has a 6.1 inch dipslay, on the other hand, the Galaxy Note 10 has a 6.3 inch display and this negligible difference might not be enough to justify having two entirely different lineups. Having said that, these lineups do have one feature that can easily draw a distinguishing line which is the ‘S-Pen’ found on Galaxy Note smartphones.

According to a freshly granted patent, Samsung is developing another foldable smartphone, but unlike the Galaxy Fold, this device is compatible with S-Pen and will support air gestures.

Both aspects i.e neglible difference between Galaxy Note and Galaxy S devices, and the newly patented foldable phone with S-Pen supports suggests Samsung might be “looking forward to unify the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Note lineup”.

Talking more about the Samsung smartphone from the patent, it has a clamshell like design which is dissimilar to the Galaxy Fold. Clearly, Samsung is not aimig towards making a smartphone-tablet hybrid, instead, the concept behind it seems similar to the foldable Moto Razr which is reproted to launch before the end of 2019.

Besides, the hinge of this Samsung smartphone can open upto an estimed angle of 270 degrees. In contrast, the Galaxy Fold was limited to just 180 degrees.

The patent also exhibits an interesting feature of the device that is being able to move icons or content from one half of the screen to the other without having to maintian a  continuous drag with stylus  or finger. Instead, the screen of such a device will be equipped with a special layer that can sense the tip of the stylus or finger without having to physically touch it. Therefore users can first select an icon by tapping on it and then they can move the stylus or finger in mid air (staying close enough so it can stay registered) to the other half even when in a folded state. The illustration shared below will make it easier to understand.

It is well known that Samsung Galaxy Fold’s display is made out of soft plastic and it can be easily scratched. Accordingly, Samsung will have to first overcome this hurdle in order to make a commercially available foldable smartphone that supports S-Pen.

While the launch of this device still seems distant, Samsung is expected to showcase its second generation of foldable handsets at the MWC 2020 event which is scheduled for 24th and 27th February.

All in all, nothing has been set in the stone and we would recommend taking this handset with a grain of salt until future developments.

We will keep you updated, so stay tuned.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro Google Apps workaround is reportedly still working fine

Huawei launched the next-generation Mate 30 series flagship smartphones last month in China, making them the first set of devices from the Chinese giant to come without support for Google apps and services because of the ban on the company from the United States.

But there was a workaround available which enabled users to install Google apps and services on the Mate 30 series phones. However, a report published last week raised concerns related to the security issues by using the workaround and soon after that, LZ Play app, which was the workaround for installing Google services was shut down.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro featured 02
Huawei Mate 30 Pro

Now, in the latest development, it is being reported that the Google Mobile Services on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro can still be installed easily and successfully. It claims that all the applications got installed and worked immediately and are continuing to work perfectly without any issues.

The report also addressed concerned about Google Pay service not working. It claimed that the issue is related to EMUI, the custom user interface from Huawei. It adds that Google Pay conflicts have been reported on other Huawei devices as well, including those phones which are running full Google Mobile services.

However, the report has not mentioned that it’s the same workaround which has been shut down. If so, it has not mentioned how they got access to the LZPlay given that the website LZPlay.net is still down.

Till now, Huawei Mate 30 series smartphones were limited to China only and thus, there was no issue about the absence of Google Play services on the devices. However, the company has not started rolling out devices to other markets, starting with Malaysia. Access to Google services outside China is crucial and most Android users rely on its apps and services for various day-to-day tasks.

In the absence of support from Google, Huawei is pushing developers to work for its own app store which is called Huawei App Gallery. The company is also ready to pump in over $1 billion to establish its app store. In remains to be seen if this new experiment from Huawei becomes successful because many companies have tried to make their own app ecosystem and have failed.

Redmi 8 to come with USB-C port, fast charge and more

The Redmi 8 launches on Wednesday, October 9, in India. The mid-range phone will succeed the Redmi 7 which was announced back in March. Ahead of the launch, Redmi India and the MD of Xiaomi India have revealed some details about the phone.

Teasers released over the weekend reveal that the phone will come with a big battery capacity which we know to be 5000mAh thanks to a TENAA listing. Along with a big battery is fast charging. While the teaser doesn’t specify, we know it is 18W Fast Charge, thanks to its sibling, the Redmi 8A, which has support for 18W fast charge and also packs a 5000mAh battery.

The Redmi 7 has a 4000mAh battery and only supports up to 10W for charging. So Redmi’s decision to not only increase the battery capacity but also to include a fast charging technology is a good one. The same can be said for the Realme 5 which also has a 5000mAh battery but can’t charge faster than 10W.

Another big upgrade the Redmi 8 will be getting is the switch to a USB Type-C connector from its predecessor’s MicroUSB port.

With the Redmi 8A and Redmi 8 getting USB Type-C ports too, we don’t expect any Xiaomi or Redmi phone released in the future to have a MicroUSB port. Maybe just the successor to the Redmi Go, if there is one.

An event page for the Redmi 8 confirms the phone will have dual rear cameras, a display with a waterdrop notch and “ultimate screen protection” which we think is just marketing for Gorilla Glass 5. It will also have a new design called “Aura Mirror” with a reflective finish and will be available in green. The page also mentions the Redmi 8 will have splash resistance.

The Redmi 8 will run Android 9 Pie out of the box, be powered by an octa-core processor, and be available in 2GB, 3GB, and 4GB RAM variants.

HTC stopped innovating on smartphones, admits new CEO Yves Maitres

HTC short for High Tech Computer Corporation was once a leader in the smartphone industry. However, due to fierce competition, mainly from Chinese OEMs, it has lost a significant part of its market share over the last several years.

When questioned about the reason behind HTC’s downfall, its newly appointed CEO, Yves Maitres said that his “company stopped innovating on smartphones” on the stage of TechCrunch Disrupt which was held earlier this month.

HTC’s senior official took the stage right after a one on one conversation with OnePlus’ co-founder Carl Pei. Apparently, the contrast of the two companies could not be more widely separated. On one hand, OnePlus which was founded about six years ago has managed to capitalise a worthwhile market share and reputation.

HTC teaserOn the other hand, HTC has been striving to stay afloat during that time. In the Q2 of 2019, it posted a fifth consecutive quarterly loss. Moreover, last year it had laid off around a quarter of its staff. Talking about its market share, in the year 2011, HTC had a market share of about 11 percent whereas in the current time period its name remains hidden in the “other” section in most reports.

Coming back to the statement made by the newly appointed CEO of HTC, who has been looking at his company’s performance from the outside until now, praised other smartphone OEMs including Apple, Samsung and Huawei who have invested heavily in the development of their hardware. On the contrary, HTC has been allocating resources towards the development of VR (virtual reality) technologies.HTC VIVE Pro Eye

Even though his company has made significant breakthroughs in the field of VR, HTC’s timing is not right, as the adoption of that technology has been slower than expected acknowledged the senior official.

He further added HTC is gearing to make a strong comeback in the smartphone market. This time the company will bank on 5G compatible smartphones and target “countries with higher GDP”.

While HTC is not expecting an immediate turnaround, the success will be greatly influenced by the adoption of 5G. He said that the year 2020 will be the starting point of 5G and considering network deployment usually takes about 2 years. 5G, which is also regarded as the next-gen of telecom should have significant coverage by 2023 and HTC believes their turning point will be 2025 or even earlier.

To wrap things up, HTC does seem ambitious but only time will tell whether the company manages to turn the tables or not.

So, stay tuned for future updates.

Sony Xperia 8 launched with 21:9 display, SD630 and 12MP dual cameras in Japan

Sony has announced a new smartphone called the Sony Xperia 8 in Japan. In terms of appearance, the handset resembles the Sony Xperia 10 mid-range smartphone that was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 tech trade show in February. When it comes to specifications, the smartphone is slightly inferior to the Xperia 10.

Sony Xperia 8 Specifications and Features

The Xperia 8 that comes with IPX5/X8 water and IPX6 dust resistant body measures 158 x 59 x 8.1 and it weighs 170 grams. The front and rear sides of the phone are protected by Gorilla Glass 6 panels. The 6.0-inch IPS LCD Triluminous display that offers full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels and a tall aspect ratio of 21:9 is available on the device. The Android 9 Pie OS customized with Xperia UI runs on the device. Sony claims that the handset can easily fit in the palm of the user and its tall display allows users to seamlessly view two apps through split-screen mode. The Side Sense bar can be accessed by double-tapping on the edge of the display to access frequently used apps and settings.

Sony Xperia 8

The rear shell of the phone has a horizontal dual camera setup that features an f/1.8 aperture 12-megapixel main lens and an f/2.4 aperture 8-megapixel depth sensor. The dual cameras offer features like 2x optical zoom, 13 types of scene recognition, 4K video recording with EIS and 120fps slow-motion video shooting. The front-facing f/2.0 aperture 8-megapixel camera can shoot beautified shots through the portrait selfie feature.

The Snapdragon 630 SoC along with 4 GB of RAM powers the Sony Xperia 8 smartphone. It offers with an internal storage of 64 GB. The company claims that the 2,760mAh battery of the Xperia 8 will not deteriorate even after 2 years of use. The other features of the Sony Xperia 8 include Google Assistant support, side-mounted fingerpint reader, microSD card slot, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB-C, 3.5mm audio jack, LDAC, Hi-Res audio and DSEE HX Digital Sound Enhancement Engine.

Sony Xperia Price and Availability

The pricing of the Xperia 8 is 54,000 Yen (~$505). However, the smartphone is scheduled to hit the Japanese market through Y! Mobile by late October. It can be bought in colors like Black, White, Orange and Blue. There is no word on the availability of the smartphone outside of Japan.

Samsung Zero Bezel QLED TV gets trademarked; set to launch at CES 2020

Samsung, one of the leading brands in the Smart TVs market, is all set to launch a new lineup of devices featuring bezel-less design. If the reports are to be believed, then the company will launch a new lineup of Smart TVs under “Zero Bezel” branding at CES 2020.

Earlier this month, on 2nd October, Samsung Electronics registered a trademark with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) for the brand name ‘Zero Bezel’. The application was submitted by intermediary Abril Abogados from Madrid, Spain which has often acted in the name of Samsung.

Samsung Zero Bezel Trademark

The application from the company is categorized as Class 9, with the description that includes ‘televisions; computer screens; LED displays; digital signage display panels’.

As the name itself suggests, the ‘Zero Bezel’ is hinting at the bezel-less design of the Smart TVs coming from the company. While there’s a trend for thinner bezels smartphones, the trend now seems to have moved on to other devices as well.

Currently, Samsung’s QLED TVs comes with very thin bezels around the screen. For instance, the Q7F 4k Smart QLED TV from Samsung is described to have a “bezel-less design” so the “Zero Bezel” should be a step forward in terms of design.

However, looking at the trademark application, it seems that the Zero Bezel branding is not limited to Smart TVs and could include a broad range of devices, including QLED gaming monitors. Currently, the company is offering a 49-inch QLED gaming monitor having 32:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio, featuring very narrow bezels.

The Zero Bezel lineup of products will certainly be a step forward in terms of design from the South Korean giant. While it remains to be seen which product category will get this new design first — TVs or Gaming Monitors, it’s for sure that the time for bezel-less displays is not limited to smartphones.

As per the reports, the first Samsung Zero Bezel QLED TV will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 which will take place in Las Vegas, USA from 7th January 2020 to 10th January 2020.

Google is just days away from unveiling its next-generation flagship smartphones — Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. The launch event is scheduled to take place on 15th October, where the company is also expected to launch a few other products.

Ahead of the phone’s launch, most of its specifications and features have already been leaked. Now, camera samples of the smartphone have also surfaced online, which are claimed to be the ones that Google will use to promote the upcoming devices.

The selfie shot taken from the phone’s front-facing camera seems to be the sample for portrait mode. While the images look impressive, the resolution of 4.5-megapixels which is significantly lower than the Pixel 3’s 8-megapixel snapper.

The portrait effect using the phone’s back camera is also very impressive and especially the edge detection seems to be working perfectly. The phone will come with an additional camera sensor on the back, and the samples show how it impacts the camera output.

Google’s Night Sight has been impressive since its inception and the camera sample of the same feature on Pixel 4 seems to be hinting towards continuing that legacy. The images taken using the Night Sight mode provides bold colors and much less noise and grains compared to the competition.
