Xiaomi’s RedmiBook 14 may launch in Europe soon as it gets EEC certification

Although the Redmi brand is a separate brand now, we really can’t completely extricate it from Xiaomi which is the parent company. Xiaomi seems to be gearing up for the launch of the affordable RedmiBook 14 laptop in Europe. We say so because the RedmiBook has just gotten certified by the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).

The certification page was revealed by emerging tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore on Twitter. In detail, the official website of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) has listed among its certified devices the new RedmiBook under a license number KZ000000223.RedmiBook 14

The website didn’t reveal any detail of the laptop but it sure confirms that Xiaomi might be finalizing plans for the launch of the RedmiBook 14 in Europe and that could also mean the global market. This should be cheering news for those who might be interested to get the laptop but don’t want to take the risk and heavy price involved in shipping from China.

Xiaomi’s Redmi launched its first notebook PC dubbed RedmiBook 14 on May 28. At the time, the notebook was announced with Intel Core i5 and Core i7. The RedmiBook14 later got an Intel Core i3 version that is priced at 3,199 yuan (~$465).

As a reminder, theRedmiBook features a 14-inch full HD screen, which explains the number 14 attached to the moniker. The display comes with narrow 5.75mm bezels and a solid 81.2% screen to body ratio. The screen equally comes with an anti-glare matte coating to ensure good display visibility in the daytime. The notebook PC is relatively lightweight at 1.5Kgs and comes with a 19mm full-sized keyboard. Unlike the new MacBooks, the RedmiBook boasts a number of ports like HDMI, 2 x USB 3.0, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB 2.0 port. The notebook comes with an efficient cooling system and boasts a long 10 hours of battery life. It supports ultra-low power standby as well as Xiaomi’s Smart Unlock 2.0, wherein you can unlock the RedmiBook 14 in just 1.2 seconds with your Mi Band 3 or the latest Band 4. Other features include DTS surround sound and genuine Microsoft Office Home and Student editions.

Microsoft Wireless Charger gets certified at FCC; raises questions

Microsoft’s New York event begins in less than 6 hours. The event will be an avenue for the Redmond-based company to show us what it has been working on for the past 12 months. While we already know some of the products that will be unveiled, there are others we don’t know yet and it appears one of them will support wireless charging seeing as a Microsoft Wireless Charger has just been certified by the FCC.

The wireless charger has the model number 1915 and a power supply rating of 5Vdc, 200mA. It has a maximum power output of 300mW and has an NFC FPC loop antenna. The description also mentions it has a USB to type-C cable and measures 162.9 x 17 x 9.9 mm.

Microsoft Surface Wireless Charger

WinCentral reports that the charger runs in three modes: Charging with 10% load, Charging with 50% load, and Charging with full load. They also reported that the wireless charger isn’t designed for the Surface Pen as it supports Notebook charging.

We don’t know which of Microsoft’s new notebooks will actually support wireless charging but we have a feeling it may be the dual-screen Surface device it is set to unveil later today that supports it. We tried checking the Wireless Power Consortium site but didn’t find any Microsoft device on their database.

Google could launch Pixel Buds 2 along with the Pixel 4 series on October 15

In the year 2017, along with the Pixel 2 series smartphones, Google had also launched its Pixel Buds wireless earphones, for a price of $159. Now, it seems that the company is all set to introduce its second-generation Pixel Buds.

As per the report, the Google Pixel Buds 2 are expected to get launched on 15th October at the Made by Google 2019 event. The event has already been confirmed by the company where it is expected to launch the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL flagship smartphones as well as Pixelbook 2, Nest Mini, among others.

Google Pixel Buds

However, nothing much is known about the upcoming Pixel Buds 2 wireless earphones. It remains a mystery whether the next-gen wireless earphones from Google will have a cable running between them like the original model or if they will be fully wireless, similar to the Apple AirPods. Our bet is on the fully wireless design, given that most manufacturers are now launching TWS earphones and not the wired ones.

We also expect the earphones to come with support for Google Assistant, similar to the original model, allowing users to play and control music, get directions or make a phone call — all through simple voice commands.

The Pixel Buds, which were launched a couple of years ago, were priced at $159 and offered in three color options — Just Black, Clearly White and Kinda Blue. While details about the upcoming Pixel Buds 2 is not yet known, we expect the them to be priced similarly. To know for sure, we’ll have to wait a couple of weeks for the event to take place.

Sony is developing a 3D holographic display that will be compatible with PlayStation

In the year 2017, Sony applied for a patent for a ‘holographic display screen’  at USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) which has now been granted. As the name suggests, the patent refers to a display that can project 3D lifelike objects.

Surprisingly, users of Sony’s holographic display don’t need to wear any 3D glasses which is unlike most other 3D solutions that are currently available. Not only can such glasses restrict the movement of the user, but they might even feel uncomfortable when used for longer periods of time.Sony 3D display patent

To project 3D images, Sony’s display from the patent uses a light emitter and numerous micro mirrors that can tilt or change direction rapidly. The light source can be modulated electonically which creates different images for the left and right eye thus the desired 3D effect is achieved.

Besides, the display is equipped with hardware that can track the user’s eye and facial movement. It can also determine the number of users looking at it. Additional components including camera and light sensor are used to calculate the distance between the viewer and the screen.

Different illustrations suggest that the sensors can be placed at different locations. For example, they can be concealed under the bezels or even under the display itself. Therefore, Sony can create a completely bezel-less display which will provide for an immersive experience.

In addition to projecting 3D holographic content, it could also function as a conventional screen that displays 2D content. Even though it is not confirmed, one user might be able to watch the content in 2D while another watches it in 3D.Sony 3D display compatible with PlayStation

Noteworthy, the display will be compatible with Sony’s PlayStation console which will open up a whole new world of possibilities for both gamers and game developers. Not only that, but the patent also talks about Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s Switch. Hence, the display might not be limited to just Sony’s gaming console.

As of now, it is not confirmed whether Sony plans to make this display commercially available. In case the company does plan to launch such a display, it is expected to carry a steep price tag. Another noteworthy feature of the display is the fact that it is modular in nature and multiple displays can be connected together to form an ever-larger display.

Taking into consideration, the patent was filed two years ago Sony could actually have a finalised product ready by now. Besides, the company has many years of experience in this field. In the year 2009, it showcased a prototype of a 360-degree holographic display whose video is shared below.

Although nothing has been set in stone, we believe Sony will bring out this technology that too sooner rather than later.

Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL renders leaked ahead of official launch

Google is bracing for the launch of its latest flagship smartphones which will be unveiled on the 15th of October. The upcoming devices will be called the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL and they will succeed the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL from the year 2018.

As observed with several other handsets, renders of both the upcoming Pixel handsets have been leaked ahead of their official launch. While this is not the first time their design details have been leaked, as real-life images of the alleged Pixel 4 XL already made rounds on the internet last week.

Pixel 4XL
Pixel 4XL

With that being said, the latest render set is shared by a known tipster who goes by the username ‘EvLeaks’ on Twitter. Therefore, it is highly likely that this is, in fact, the finalised design for the upcoming Pixel 4 duo.

In comparison to their predecessors, the design of both the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL is significantly different. The front of the two smartphones have a high screen-to-body ratio display with a considerable forehead. The rear panel of the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL is made out of glass and it houses a dual-camera setup which is placed in a square module that slightly protrudes from the surface. For the first time, Google has opted to equip its Pixel smartphones with more than one rear camera. Therefore, consumers are hyped about their photo and video capturing capabilities.

Although both the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL look identical, going by the name scheming, the XL variant will have a larger display and an overall larger form factor.

While the source has not revealed any features or specifications of the Pixel 4 duo, they can be obtained from prior leaks and are listed below.

Huawei Mate 30 Google apps and services workaround is no longer working

Huawei launched its flagship Mate 30 series smartphones a couple of weeks ago, making it the first batch of devices to come without support for Google apps and services since the United States put the Chinese giant on the “Entity List”, essentially banning the company.

Although the phone comes without Google’s support for apps and services, there was a workaround that enabled users to keep using Google services on the Mate 30 series smartphones. However, the workaround method via “LZ Play” is no longer available and the website hosting several apps is no longer working.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro featured 02
Huawei Mate 30 Pro

Since Huawei wasn’t able to secure exemption from the United States to use Google services, it looses out on access to Google apps. In the workaround, it required users to install “LZ Play”, a third-party application, with administrator-level permissions. But the method has raised some serious security concerns.

It used some specialised Android permissions found only in Huawei phones, including the permission to install other apps as “system” apps. Shortly after John Wu, the developer behind Magisk, published an explanantion about how the system works, the site hosting the LZ Play app was taken down.

Currently, it’s not known if the website was taken down by its developers or the site’s hosting service provider Alibaba. Reports indicate that there’s also a possibility that Huawei issued a “cease and desist” notice after the company was concerned about the bad press but this seems unlikely.

Also, it is being reported that the Huawei Mate 30 smartphone no longer passes Google’s SafetyNet security test, which is Google’s way of making sure that the device is valid, secure, and not rooted.

Passing SafetyNet tests is one of the requirements to be able to use some of the applications and since the phone has now failed the test, clearly something has changed either in the SafetyNet process or on the Mate 30 series phones.

In short, if you own Huawei Mate 30 series smartphone and haven’t installed Google apps on your device, you’re likely out of luck to do so until US and China settle their trade war or Huawei is granted exemption to use Google services on its devices.

It’s noteworthy that the Huawei Mate 30 series smartphones are not available for purchase in many regions outside China. Also, smartphones in China ships without Google services and most of them are already banned in the country. So, not many people should be affected by this but if you are the one who imported the phone, then you are stuck.

Samsung now owes all Galaxy S4 users $10 over dodgy speed tests

Now this is something really interesting for a change. Samsung has agreed to pay $10 to every single person who’s ever purchased a Galaxy S4, which was released back in 2013. This is apparently due to a long standing class-action lawsuit for $13.4m (two-and-a-half hours of profit) alleging the smartphone manufacturer cheated on benchmark tests.

According to the report, Samsung added source code in the S4 devices and the code was capable of detecting whether or not any benchmarking app was running in the smartphone. The source code helped the smartphone run at a faster speed only when a benchmarking app was in action.

The issue first came to the light back in  2014 and Samsung since then been arguing that it’s not legally obliged to tell consumers about the source code that allowed it to manipulate the benchmark results. While Samsung still holds on to what they have been saying for five years, the lawsuit claimed that Samsung negatively influenced consumers’ purchasing decision by making false representations.

The Korean manufacturer has agreed “to require the entity from which it purchases new Samsung smartphones to confirm that such smartphones have not been pre-loaded with software that detects and boosts the performance scores from benchmarking applications.”

So, if you’re one of those who purchased the Galaxy S4, Samsung will soon contact you via email to let you know about the settlement and how to apply to claim your $10. Yay, I guess.

Samsung patents a smartphone-embedded IR Spectrometer; could be on the Galaxy S11

A new Samsung patent filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) has revealed one feature that could find its way to the Galaxy S11. The patent which was published on September 26, 2019, is titled as an “Electronic device including several light sources.”Samsung

The device is described as a smartphone with an infrared (IR) spectrometer. The patent document also includes several sketches that show how various sensors, including the camera function to achieve spectrometry. One of the illustrations shows how the IR spectrometer function in calculating the sugar content of fruits. The phone will also be able to detect the level of moisture on the skin, measure the CO2 level. It also features smoke detection and can help determine the content of medicine as well as to measure the freshness of food and the blood glucose level.

If Samsung decides to equip the Galaxy S11 next year with this function, the phone won’t be the first to have such. The world’s first smartphone with an infrared spectrometer is the Changhong H2 that was first unveiled at CES 2017. A tiny spectrometer-on-a-chip was also introduced by Egyptian start-up Si-Ware. The chip is quite compact making it suitable for use on even a wearable device aside from smartphones.  Towards the end of 2017, TU Eindhoven also developed a micro-spectrometer sensor.

First Samples from the 108MP Mi Mix Alpha is here & we are not impressed!

Xiaomi took the tech industry by storm when it unveiled the Mi MIX Alpha concept smartphone in China towards the end of September. If the 2016 Mi Mix was a spectacular product, the Mix Alpha will leave you awestruck as a result of its spectacular design, immersive dual-screen and powerful specs lineup. The Mix Alpha also stood out in the camera department, packing a triple camera setup that includes a 108MP main camera.Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha

The first samples shot by the Mix Alpha camera have just been released on Weibo. The samples were shot during the National Day parade to mark China’s independence and were shared by Xiaomi’s CFO Shou Zi Chew. If the camera samples are anything to go by, then the camera setup may not be one of the Mix Alpha’s strongest selling points. The samples are anything but impressive.mi mix alpha

The Mi MIX Alpha holds the record as the world’s first smartphone to feature a 100MP+ resolution camera sensor. This is made possible by using the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX 108MP camera sensor with a 1/1.33″ sensor size. The HMX’s large 1/1.33-inch sensor size allows it to capture more light than smaller sensors so it’s able to produce sharp photos with rich details even in low-light conditions deploying the process called pixel binning. That allows the sensor to combine pixels so four pixels act as a single larger pixel. The process reduces the pixel size of a photo from 108MP to 27MP but improves low-light performance.

The camera samples look slightly blurry as if the light exposure is too high. Perhaps, that is because the sensor can perform best under low light conditions and not in bright light. But it two samples are not enough to evaluate the camera prowess even though we expect better from a phone that is priced over $2K.

Still talking of the camera configuration, the Mi Mix Alpha’s second sensor is a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and the third, a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera lens with 117° FOV. This setup also supports 1.5cm macro photography. Other features of the setup include a four-axis OIS, Laser focus, and a flicker sensor. There is no selfie camera but you can flip the rear camera and use the rear display as a viewfinder for selfies.

Hopefully, we can get some professional shots and independent review of the Mi Mix Alpha’s camera sometime soon. Since the device is the first phone to use Samsung’s ultra-large 108MP sensor, there is no phone camera sample to compare it with. But there are several phones with smaller camera sensors that give better camera outputs. Perhaps, the mantra that bigger isn’t always better holds true here?
