The story behind XIDU laptop manufacturer (plus discount coupons)

XIDU is a fairly new laptop manufacturer that was established back in 2012 but the story goes even further back in 2009 when its two founders, Mr. Tang and Mrs. Zhou, met. As a matter of fact, it is a kind of a love story. This couple, eager to create a better future for themselves, resigned from the small companies they were working at and took off to start their own business.

XIDU Brand

In the early days of the company, they produced casings of laptops for other brands and sometimes they even had to deliver goods taking a crowded bus. However, the two people survived this difficult period with each other’s unconditional support and even got orders from big brands such as Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. Committed to their original plan, they took the lead in the industry and established a long-term strategic partnership with many big brands. Despite their success, the couple never forgets where they came from, and they are easygoing and always get along well with the frontline employees.

XIDU BrandIn a meeting with some of their young employers, they heard them complaining about not being able to obtain a laptop for themselves as they were too expensive for them. This is the turning point for the company and the moment they decided to start producing their own laptops that would perform good but would be affordable for young people.

XIDU BrandBeing a rising brand in the industry doesn’t mean inexperienced as they gained experience in R&D and production of notebooks from contract manufacturing in the past. The founders collected the demands of many young people: they want a laptop that is cost-effective, portable, versatile and good-looking. Centering on these core demands, XIDU overcame all technical problems and finally made the first laptop that amazed all the young people in the factory. Moreover, as an original equipment manufacturer for big brand models like Microsoft’s Surface and Lenovo’s YOGA, they use the same equipment and mold. As a result, their laptops have the DNA of well-known models. Craftsmanship and design are close to perfect and nowadays, most of their models are attracting a great number of loyal fans worldwide.

You can find all of XIDU laptops on their official Aliexpress Store as well as their own store that ships in cooperation with Amazon. At their store, you can use coupon XIDU60
that will get you $60 off! Also, you can find them on Amazon US and Amazon UK.

Redmi launch event to happen in August; Could be for Redmi TV

Yesterday evening while interacting with Redmi fans, Xiaomi Product Director Wang Teng Thomas hinted that there will be a Redmi launch event in August. Xiaomi Group VP and Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing also revealed the wee hours of the day that the upcoming products will not disappoint the fans. Now, the rumor mill is speculating that the company may announce the Redmi Note 8 smartphone through its upcoming unveil event. There is a possibility that the company may use its next launch event to launch its first Redmi TVs.

Redmi event in August

Last week, Redmi had released a camera sample of its 64-megapixel smartphone. It is believed that the mysterious 64-megapixel Redmi phone could be equipped with Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 64-megapixel sensor that comes with pixel-merging Tetracell technology to capture 16-megapixel shots in low-light conditions by combining four pixels into one. Even though there is no official confirmation or a concrete proof, the rumor mill is speculating that it could be Redmi Note 8 and the company could be debuting in the coming month.

Xiaomi Mi TV 4a 32-inch

There is a possibility that Redmi may announce its Redmi TV series for the Chinese market in August. The reason behind it is that a Redmi TV with model number L70M5-RA that is believed to be equipped with 70-inch 4K resolution display has been approved by the 3C authority of China. It is speculated that alongside it the company may also launch a 40-inch model that has a model number of L40M5-FA. Since Redmi TV has bagged 3C certifications, its arrival seems to be close at hand and it may announce it as early as next month.

Will Redmi announce its first Redmi TV or Redmi Note 8 or any other device in August? Let us know your thoughts by posting your comments below.

Frustration and anger mars Huawei Singapore $54 phone promo

Last week, Huawei announced a promo for its customers in Singapore. To mark the country’s 54th National Day, the Chinese phone maker announced it would sell the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 for S$54 (~$39), less than a third of its S$198 (~$144) original price.

Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 Promo

The only requirement was that you had to be a citizen or permanent resident of Singapore aged 50 and above. You could also buy up to two phones.

We think Huawei put that age limit believing there would not be large crowds since those eligible are older citizens, but the company was in for a surprise.

Reports say people were already forming queues as early as 4 AM. However, only a few people were able to purchase as stocks ran out even before the stores were opened (that is weird). It turns out that only a few units (between 20 to 30) were available at each store.

Some customers who spoke to the press said they were informed by store employees that there was limited stock only after they had been on the queue for hours. Several customers at Huawei stores at the Jewel Changi Airport, VivoCity, NEX, and Tao Payoh, expressed their disappointment at the incident.

One 73-year old woman accused Huawei of “telling lies” as they didn’t initially inform the public that there will be limited stock. Another woman said she narrowly missed getting the phone. According to her, she was the 16th on the queue but after the turn of the 12th person, a member of staff announced that the phone was sold out.

We are sorry. Our outlets are oversubscribed. Please refrain from joining the queues further as stores are likely to…

Posted by Huawei Mobile on Thursday, July 25, 2019

The promo was originally supposed to run for three days but was only available on the first day. An apology letter by Huawei which was posted online and at stores said they were overwhelmed by the demand for the phone and apologized for not being able to provide enough units. It then added that there was no need to proceed to other outlets as they are also sold out.

Huawei later announced that it would be closing its shops early “for safety and security reasons”. Following the outcome of the first promotion, it also announced that it would be putting another promotion on hold until further notice. For this second promotion, buyers will be able to purchase the Mate 20 for S$568 (~414) instead of S$998 (~728).

Stores later re-opened for business on Saturday.

Trendy or rugged? Big battery indestructible phone is always the choice

Smartphone models are literally thousands and choosing the right one can become a real pain. Choose a good looking phone with decent specs or choose a rugged phone with a battery that lasts “forever”? Such a struggle is easier to solve when the Blackview BV9500 enters the equation. The phone presented a great sales performance proving that the 10000mAh ultra-big BAK® battery and rugged specs instantly became a favorite among engineers, building workers, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

That was until 2018 as development is processing power made the Helio P23 found on the BV9500 a bit weak and in conjunction with Android 8.1 OS seemingly can’t meet the need of today’s phone users. Also, the big battery capacity alone isn’t enough for users to prefer this over a more powerful competitor. Blackview didn’t back off and is bringing the BV9500 Plus to the market, an upgraded version of BV9500 that not only inherits the advantages of the old model but also improves its inadequacies.

To start, BV9500 Plus retains the killer feature of its predecessor which is the 10000mAh BAK® battery with standby time up to 40 days. In addition, there are 2 charging options now: the wireless charging and 12V/2A fast charging that is more than 2 times faster than normal 5V/2A charge technology. The huge battery can be charged within just 3.5 hours. As for the upgraded parts, the Blackview BV9500 Plus now comes with Helio P70 SoC together with the latest Android 9 Pie, offering a smooth multitasking experience.

Blackview BV9500 Plus

What’s also new in BV9500 Plus is the waterproof rating up to IP69K, withstanding submersion under 1.8 meters deep water up to 2 hours. Furthermore, it can resist 1450 psi high-pressure and 80ºC high-temperature steam scouring.

The new device is planned to hit the market next week so stay tuned as it will definitely come with an offer! The old model’s production is now over and you can find it online while stock lasts. In the meantime, the BV9700 Pro, BV9600 and BV6100 are on promotion. For more information visit their official website.

Huawei sold over 2 Million nova 5 smartphones in a month, just like its predecessor!

Huawei’s nova series is doing pretty well so far. The company unveiled a number of new models in the nova 5 lineup, including the new nova 5i pro that was launched alongside the Mate 20 X 5G smartphone a few days back. Now, Huawei has announced that the nova 5 sales have exceeded 2 million units in just a month.

Nova 5 Pro 2 million sales

At present, Nova 5 has four models. The first three models, Nova 5, Nova 5 Pro, and Nova 5i, were announced in the later half of June. They were joined by a new model, the Nova 5i Pro, a few days back. Its predecessor, the Nova 3 series also sold more than 2 million units in a month of its launch. In fact, by the end of 2018, Huawei revealed that it had sold more than 65 million nova smartphones since 2016. In order to commemorate 2 million sales of the new nova 5 series, the company has announced a special ‘Coral orange’ Limited Gift Box set for Nova 5 Pro as well.

Samsung patents a unique triple stacked display smartphone design

The era of innovative smartphone designs have started and the most ambitious commercially available design is the foldable smartphone design. However, smartphone makers are still experimenting with other design types.

In a similar move, South Korean tech giant Samsung has been granted a new patent for a smartphone design with three display stacked on top of each other. The patent was filed by the company in August last year and was granted in March earlier this year.

Samsung Triple Display

Thanks to the renders made by Letsgodigital, we can see three parts each featuring a display. There’s a middle unit at the bottom and a metal rod that holds the three parts together. From the patent images, it seems that the user will be able to scroll left or right through parts independently of each other, which gives them a range of monitors only. The design seems quite unique and the enclosure also seems remarkably thin.

The company has included 10 patent sketches which show that the bottom unit is completely round-shaped. The phone also expands as a RAL-range while some colors range from the paint industry.

Samsung Triple Display Patent

Also, there are no visible buttons or camera sensors on the smartphone apart from the receiver. Further, the back panel of the device is also completely smooth. It cannot be said with certainty if the company will go ahead with the production of this as the patent for this from Samsung Display is still pending.

Meanwhile, the South Korean giant is gearing up to launch the Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone. The company has confirmed that it has fixed the issues and has taken measures to ensure the phone’s durability. The phone is set to go on sale in September this year but no specific date has been revealed yet.

Up Next: Huawei said to release two new chips later this year — one with Integrated 5G Modem

Huawei said to release two Chips later in 2019, one with Integrated 5G Modem

In recent years, Huawei’s Hisilicon has managed to make chips that go head to head with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and Samsung’s Exynos flagship series. However, this year, the company aims to take lead in the chipmaking industry by launching two new SoCs in the market. In addition to the Kirin 985 that’s expected to launch alongside the new Mate 30 series, Huawei is said to release an integrated 5G chipset later in the year.

kirin 970

Nikkei Asian Review reports that Kirin 985 will adopt the new-generation EUV technology, making it one of the most advanced mobile processors in the industry. Followed by its release, the company is said to release its new mobile chipset with an integrated 5G modem sometime around October-December of 2019. If true, Huawei is likely to beat Qualcomm in releasing the world’s first integrated 5G chipset in the market. Qualcomm’s 5G integrated chip is said to release only in the first half of 2020.

The new 5G integrated mobile chipset could likely be featured in the special 5G edition of the Mate 30 series that will launch by the end of the year. Nikkei adds that Huawei has set an aggressive internal goal of selling 10 million 5G smartphones by the end of the year. A majority of these sales should be driven by its first 5G smartphone, the Mate 20 X 5G which is already selling in Europe and will go on sale in August in China. It is worth adding that Huawei had certified four 5G smartphones in China earlier this month. In comparison, other manufacturers have just one commercial 5G smartphone under their belt. This goes on to show Huawei’s aggressive stand for the 5G market.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei Mate 30 series could ditch periscope camera for large IMX600 sensor

Recently, Huawei executive, He Gang had said that the company decided to price the Mate 20 X 5G aggressively in China because it was hoping for quicker adoption of the new age cellular technology. The company wants more people to start using 5G and the Mate 20 X is a powerful smartphone for anyone to start their journey into the new world of 5G.

Nikkei Asian Review also adds that Huawei is looking to decrease its reliance on US companies in the coming years. It quotes one of its sources saying that the company’s “priority will be to figure out detailed backup plans and imagine a world without American suppliers”. So even if the Trump Administration decides to loosen up its policies with regards to Huawei, the company will still look to reduce its reliance on US companies.

FedEx held back over 100 Huawei related shipments, reveals Chinese Authorities

Earlier this year, after the ban on Huawei by the United States, FedEx re-routed Huawei packages, which the courier company claimed to be an “operational error”. However, the Chinese authority suspected that and launched an investigation into the matter.

Now, as per the reports coming from the local media, Chinese state departments have found that FedEx’s previous statement on the incident was inconsistent with the facts but didn’t elaborate on the matter.

However, the report further reveals that the regulators found that FedEx had held back more than 100 Huawei-related shipments. This came to light as a result of an investigation by the Chinese authority. According to Xinhua, the relevant state departments will uphold the principles of “comprehensiveness, objectivity, and fairness and continue to carry out an in-depth investigation in accordance with the laws.”

FedEx released a statement in regards to the new development and said: “We have and will continue to fully cooperate with the Chinese authorities on the investigation and we are committed to full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. These shipments in question were handled while we were trying to comply with the US Department of Commerce order, which was unclear and resulted in considerable complexity for our operations.”

This issue has now become significant at a time when two of the world’s biggest economies are engaged in a trade war, which escalated when the US banned Chinese giant Huawei claiming national security without providing any proof for the claim.

A couple of months ago, in May, Huawei accused FedEx of diverting packages to the US without authorization, including two that the Chinese company had sent from Japan to its offices on the mainland. It also said FedEx had attempted to divert two more packages to the US that were sent from Vietnam and destined for the Chinese firm’s offices in Hong Kong and Singapore.

The incidents prompted Huawei to seek a review of its logistics and document delivery support requirements. At that time, FedEx denied the incident but the company later apologized for the unauthorized re-routing of packages, adding that “there were no external parties” involved in the erroneous shipment to the US.

A couple of days later, in early June 2019, China announced that it has launched an investigation into the incident. Just weeks after that, FedEx acknowledged another missed delivery due to an “operational error” from the UK to the US.

After these issues with FedEx, Chinese giant Huawei entered into a strategic alliance with China’s state-owned logistics giant China Post. Last month, FedEx sued the U.S. government claiming that it should not be held liable in case the company inadvertently shipped products that violated a Trump admin’s ban on exports to Chinese companies.

Oppo licenses VOOC Flash Charging technology to eight more companies

Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has today announced that it has signed a license agreement with eight companies, including product and chipset manufacturers, to develop, manufacture and sell devices with support for VOOC Flash Charging technology.

Prior to this, in November last year, the company had entered into a similar license agreement with around six companies. The addition of eight more companies will help the company to further expand the footprints of VOOC technology.

OPPO VOOC

The eight companies which entered into a license agreement with Oppo for the VOOC tech includes Anke Innovation Technology Co., Ltd., Angbao Electronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Hangzhou Shilan Microelectronics Co., Ltd., Lilinda Technology Group Co., Ltd., Ningbo Bull Digital Technology Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Renqing Excellence Investment Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Shishang Exhibition Technology Co., Ltd. and Core Sea Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd.

Commenting on this development, Feng Ying, Director of IP at Oppo, said: “VOOC flash charging technology fully demonstrates OPPO’s technological leadership in the field of fast charging, greatly enhancing the user’s charging experience. We are very pleased to be able to promote the sustainable development of VOOC’s flash-filled ecology through our external licensing. Today, OPPO VOOC flash has 14 excellent industry chain partners. In the future, we will also open the license to more enterprises, vOOC flash-charge technology plus accessories, chips and other areas of development.”

Oppo VOOC Flash Charge

There are three versions of this flash charging technology — VOOC, VOOC Mini, and Super VOOC. The company has also developed a new 15W Wireless Flash Charging technology. Last year, Oppo had revealed that more than 100 million devices worldwide are using the company’s VOOC flash charging technology.

VOOC Flash Charge uses a low-voltage and high-current charging solution and claims to provide 2 hours of talk time when the phone is charged for only 5 minutes. VOOC Mini, on the other hand, has been optimized to have smaller adaptors. SuperVOOC, which is used in the company’s flagship devices, has a maximum charging power of around 50W, charging the phone in just 35 minutes.

Meizu again lays off employees; closes down several stores in China

If the reports coming from China are to be believed, then the smartphone maker Meizu is in deep waters. As per the report, which cites the company’s employees, Meizu carried out a new round of layoffs and the heavily hit department was marketing.

The report, citing Meizu insiders, says that the company has laid off more than 30 percent of its workforce this year so far and is now left with just around a thousand employees. Meizu has also confirmed that its well-known systems engineer Hong Hansheng has also left the Chinese company.

On the other hand, Meizu, which was touting itself to be a competitor of Huawei and was focusing on expanding its offline presence, seems to be backing down. The company, which had over 2,700 offline stores at its peak in 2016, is now left with just 5 or 6 such stores in one province.

As we recently reported, Li Nan, co-founder and Vice President of Meizu, resigned from the company earlier this month. In the memo shared publicly, he said that he had started taking fewer responsibilities following the launch of the Meizu 16. He did acknowledge that the company is facing challenges but believes things will get better as long as they do not stop improving.

While Li Nan hasn’t specified what his next step would be, he has revealed that he is still focused on the consumer market and developing new brands. While departing from Meizu, he thanked his co-workers, investors, and shareholders.

The Blue Charm brand was being headed by Li Nan while Bai Yongxiang became the CEO of the flagship Meizu brand. Huang Zhang was leading the product design efforts. Hong Hansheng, on the other hand, was leading the Flyme OS development. While all was good, the company couldn’t compete with the top OEMs in terms of sales.

Meizu was co-founded by Li Nan along with Bai Yongxiang who is the current CEO, and Huang Zhang (Jack Wong). Initially, the company was started as an MP3 player manufacturer before switching to phones in 2008. While the company’s portfolio is now diverse, smartphones remain Meizu’s major source of revenue. Last year, Meizu also celebrated its 15th anniversary.

Zeiss CEO thinks 64MP cameras could be Overkill for smartphones

Smartphone cameras have come a long way, ever since the first camera phone, the Kyocera VP-210 visual phone was announced back in 1999. Manufacturers are looking for new ways to differentiate their smartphones and cameras are often one of these features that makes a phone stand out. In the pursuit of differentiating a smartphone, manufacturers have started adding huge sensors on their phones and 48MP sensors have become the norm for a lot of flagships and mid-rangers. But now, smartphones with even 64MP sensors are coming our way in the next few months. So it begs the question: Are such large sensors necessary and useful?

Nokia 9 Pureview
Nokia 9 Pureview has a penta-camera setup

According to Zeiss Group’s CEO & President Dr. Michael Kaschke, 40MP sensor is already more than enough for smartphones. While talking to the Indian Express, he explained that there are limits in terms of processing speeds, signal to noise ratio, and costs that put smartphone cameras already at its tipping point. According to his comments, anything over 40MP could be an overkill on smartphones given their limitations.

He further reveals that Zeiss Lens wants to focus more on products that cater to ‘professionals, semi-professionals, and artistic photographers’ rather than smartphones. However, he still wants to work with smartphone companies and currently has a partnership with HMD Global for its Nokia-branded devices. To recall, Zeiss and Nokia’s partnership dates back to the Nokia 95 days.

He adds that multiple sensor setup is the way to go for smartphones as it helps to enhance the photos as well as treat smartphones like a DSLR. However, he says for professional photography, consumers will look for professional cameras instead of smartphones.

What do you think? Will 64MP cameras be overkill for smartphones?

New OPPO phone with ‘Waterfall Screen’ with extremely curved edges shown off in images

OPPO VP Brian Shen has today shared fresh images of a mysterious OPPO phone that features a dual-edge curved screen with one of the largest curves seen on a smartphone display ever. The images show that the smartphone offers a very high screen-to-body ratio thanks to its tall aspect ratio display. Also, whats marvelous about the display of the mysterious OPPO smartphone is that its left and right edges curve at 88-degree. The new display design is dubbed as ‘Waterfall Screen.’

When viewed from the front, the new OPPO phone with Waterfall Screen does not seem to feature any side borders. It appears to offer a screen space of nearly 100 percent as it is equipped with ultrathin and symmetrical upper and lower bezels.

One of the images that show the new OPPO phone with Waterfall Screen held along with the Find X flagship phone from last year Probably, the smartphone could be offering a tall aspect ratio of 21:9 like the Xperia 1. The images and video of the phone also shows that it is equipped with a slim body.

The curvature on the phone is more pronounced than the ones found on flagship phones from Samsung, Huawei and OnePlus 7 Pro. Recently, a Chinese leakster had revealed that OPPO’s sibling brand Vivo is reportedly working on Vivo NEX 3 with extremely curved display design.

There is no front camera on the mysterious OPPO with Waterfall Screen. The slimness of the phone suggests that it could be equipped with OPPO’s under-display camera technology that was showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 Shanghai tech trade show in June. Under-display camera technology is all about embedding the camera beneath the top portion of the display which remains invisible while using the device and appears only when the front camera is accessed.

Since the Chinese manufacturer has started teasing the new OPPO phone with Waterfall Screen early in the second half of the year, the company may debut it in the next few months. As of this writing, there is no other information available on its specifications.

What’s your opinion on the new display of the new OPPO phone? What could be the name of the device? Share us your thoughts by posting your comments below.
