Sony Xperia 1R (J8220) UA Prof reveals 5K resolution display

The Sony Xperia 1 that was announced in February this year is the world’s first smartphone with 21:9 aspect ratio OLED display that produces 4K resolution. A UAProf of a mysterious Sony smartphone dubbed as Xperia 1R with support for 5K resolution has surfaced today. It is speculated that it could be the next premium Sony phone that may debut at the IFA 2019 event in September.

The Sony J8220 smartphone that has a tentative name of Xperia 1R supports a screen resolution of 5040 x 2160 pixels. It offers an aspect ratio of 21:9. The Xperia 1 has a 6.5-inch display that supports 1,664 x 3,840 pixels 4K resolution. The Sony J8220 offers 70 percent more pixels through its 5K display. The screen offers offer a whopping pixel density of 899ppi. There is concrete evidence to prove that whether the Sony J8220 will debut as Xperia 2 or with some other moniker.

Earlier in this month, UAProf files of two Sony phones with model numbers J8210 and J8010 were spotted. These phones have respective code names of SPHINX and HORUS and they are equipped with 5G modems. Since the Xperia 1 has a model number of J8110, it appears that the J8210 could be the Xperia 2 or an upgraded version of Xperia 1 that may arrive as Xperia 1 Premium or Xperia 1 5G. The J8210 phone only supports full HD resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels with standard aspect ratio of 16:9. The actual screen resolution of the J8210 could be different. The J8010 supports 1644 x 3840 pixels like the Xperia 1.

The Japanese tech company is expected to announce Xperia 2 as well as Xperia 20 and Xperia 20 Pro mid-range phones at IFA 2019. The Xperia 20 has recently received certification from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Leaked information has revealed that the Xperia 20 may come with a 6-inch full HD+ resolution supporting display with 21:9 aspect ratio. The Snapdragon 710 SoC is expected to power the smrtphone with 4 GB / 6 GB of RAM. It may release in 64 GB and 128 GB storage versions. A pair of 12-megapixel cameras could be available on the backside of the phone.

Samsung to reportedly launch another foldable smartphone early next year

Earlier this year, South Korean giant Samsung launched its ambitious foldable smartphone — Samsung Galaxy Fold, which the company had been working on for years. While the phone is yet to go on sale, the company is reportedly working on its successor.

As per the report, which cites the company’s suppliers in Taiwan as the source, Samsung is working on a next-generation foldable smartphone which is expected to get launched early next year but not specific timeframe is known yet.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2

The report further adds that while the current foldable smartphone comes with a book-like foldable smartphone, the next-generation foldable smartphone will have a flip design and will be folded vertically and not horizontally.

While nothing much is known about this upcoming foldable smartphone, the report adds that the smartphone will come with a 6.7-inch display. It also reveals that the company will start sourcing components for this device from November this year.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2

The news about the next-generation foldable smartphone from Samsung comes when the company is yet to start selling the Galaxy Fold smartphone, it’s first foldable display device. While the phone was announced earlier this year, it’s sales have been postponed because of the display-related issues reported by the early reviewers.

The company has reported fixed the issues and is all set to start selling the smartphone, but is yet to officially confirm this. It is believed that the company could take the stage at the Galaxy Note 10 smartphone launch on 7th August to share more information about the Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone.

Redmi Note 7, 7 Pro new “Mirror Flower Water Moon” color available for purchase

Earlier this week, Redmi had released an image of a new color edition for the Redmi Note 7. At that time, it did not confirm on the name of the color variant, but it confirmed that it will be available for purchase from today. The new model that is dubbed as “Mirror Flower Water Moon” is now listed on the official online store for buying. The Redmi Note 7 Pro is also available in the new color.

The “Mirror Flower Water Moon” name may sound weird, but it describes the reflecting design of the new color variant. In Chinese, “Mirror Flower, Water Moon” is a proverb that refers to something that cannot be touched but can be seen. For instance, reflection of a flower on mirror or reflection of the moon on water’s surface. The below shown video of the new color variants showcases its beauty.

The Redmi Note 7 Mirror Flower Water Moon version comes in single version featuring 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. It carries a price tag of 1,199 Yuan (~$174) after 200 Yuan discount. The 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage edition of the Redmi Note 7 Pro costs 1,399 Yuan (~$203) after a price cut of 200 Yuan. These models will be available at discounted price tags until tomorrow.

UK Parliament committee says ‘no technical grounds’ to ban Huawei

After the United States banned Huawei from doing business with any of the US-based firms and using their technology citing national security, US soon started lobbying its allies to follow the suit in banning the company.

However, as per the letter from UK Parliament member and Science and Technology Committee chairman Norman Lamb, the Chinese giant Huawei won’t be banned in the United Kingdom. The Parliament Committee thus rejected the proposed British ban on Huawei, its products, and services.

huawei logo

Concluding the research, Norman Lamb wrote in his letter: “Overall, my Committee concludes that — subject to restrictions on access to highly sensitive elements of the relevant networks; continued close scrutiny; and satisfactory improvements in Huawei’s cybersecurity in response to the Huawei Cyber Security Centre’s Oversight Board — there are no technical grounds for excluding Huawei entirely from the UK’s 5G or other telecommunications networks.”

However, the letter does add that the company is to be restricted from having “access to highly sensitive elements of the relevant networks,” which means that the UK’s Science and Technology Committee chair still doesn’t trust the Chinese company when it comes to sensitive information.

The letter further adds that banning Huawei from 5G network rollouts will do nothing to stop the Chinese influence given that multiple vendors make their products in China. To ban Huawei wouldn’t be enough to get rid of the perceived “threat” as one would have to get rid of every Chinese corporation.

The response from the UK regarding the call from the United States for banning Huawei in the next-generation telecom network technology is in line with other countries like Germany which has said it wouldn’t ban Huawei from its 5G network rollout simply because it is a Chinese corporation.

While the United States is working hard to convince its allies to keep Huawei out of 5G network rollouts globally, the Chinese telecom giant is actively signing up global customers for 5G network deployment, with ten new clients since March 2019. The company claims that more than half of Huawei’s 50 commercial 5G contracts are with European carriers, with the rest being American carriers such as Verizon Wireless.

Earlier this month, Monaco launched the next-generation 5G mobile network technology and with that, it became the first country in Europe to launch the 5G network based on the technology supplied from China-based Huawei.

Huawei witness slowdown in its growth in Q2 2019 because of negative headlines

US President Donal Trump signed an executive order a couple of months ago to put Chinese giant Huawei on the “Entity List”, effectively banning the US-based companies from doing any kind of business with Huawei.

The negative impact of the company’s clash with the US government is now coming out in the open. The latest market analysis reveals that the company’s growth has slowed down in the second quarter of this year.

huawei

As per the report, the company’s sales in Europe’s large market were down by 1.9 percent over Q1 and 9 percent down compared to the period of May to June. This is the duration when the impact of the ban was felt. However, the company still managed to achieve better results overall compared to Q2 2018.

Analysts believed that the negative press surrounding the company’s products because of the ban from the United States government is causing users to second guess their Huawei purchase. The report also adds that Samsung and Xiaomi are the ones that have benefited the most from this ban.

However, the positive quarter reporting for Huawei was achieved through its dominant performance in China. When combined with the sales of Honor devices, Huawei commanded an impressive 46.1 percent of the Chinese smartphone sales in Q2 of 2019.

Surprisingly, Motorola captured around 8.1 percent of the market share in Q2 2019 in the United States, thanks to the great performance of the Motorola E5 Play and the new Moto G6 Plus smartphones.

Also, the best-selling smartphone in the United States was the Apple iPhone XR, the most affordable offering from the three smartphones announced last year. This was followed by the iPhone 8 and iPhone XS Max. The fourth and fifth position was grabbed by the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and Galaxy S10.

While Huawei had faced very difficult times in the past couple of months, it seems that the company will be soon out of waters. The US Commerce Department will reportedly start issuing licenses to the US first to resume business with Huawei in the coming weeks.

Galaxy Tab S6 press renders leak, comes in three colors

A few months ago, Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S5e – an upper midrange tablet. Following its launch, we presumed the main flagship tablet for the year would arrive as the Galaxy Tab S5 – a direct successor to last year’s Galaxy Tab S4. That was the belief we held until a few weeks ago when it was revealed that rather than launch as the Galaxy Tab S5, it will launch as the Galaxy Tab S6.

Live photos and specifications of the upcoming tablet surfaced a little over a week ago. It has now been followed by press renders of the tablet which is expected to launch in August.

The renders which were first made public by Android Headlines, show the Galaxy Tab S6 will come in three colors – Blue, Gray, and Rose Gold. The tablet will have equal-sized bezels around its Super AMOLED display.

When held in portrait mode, the Tab S6 has two speakers and a USB Type-C port on the bottom and two speakers at the top for a quad-speaker system. The speakers are of course “Tuned by AKG”. On the right side of the frame are the power volume rocker and a MicroSD card tray and or SIM tray. The left side is home to a set of connector pins for an external keyboard.

The tablet will have a groove on the back where the redesigned S Pen will attach to magnetically when not in use and also to charge. This groove sist directly below vertically arranged dual cameras. Surprisingly, there is no LED flash this time around.

There are reports that the flagship tablet will feature an in-display fingerprint scanner but none of the renders show that there is a sensor under the display. The bezels also do not seem to house an Iris Face Unlock system like its predecessor but they also do not show the front-facing camera too and we know Samsung won’t skip that. So there is likely an Iris Scanner but the renders just aren’t showing it.

The Galaxy Tab S6 will have a Snapdragon 855 processor and should come in multiple configurations. The display is said to be 10.5 inches just like its predecessor’s. It has also been reported to have an 8MP selfie camera and 13MP + 5MP dual rear cameras. It should run Android Pie out of the box and support Samsung DeX. Its price is unknown at the moment. There is also no evidence it will be announced alongside the Galaxy Note10 series. The Tab S4 launched before the Galaxy Note9, so the same may happen again this year.

China issues OPPO, Huawei and Vivo certification to sell 5G devices

China has begun issuing permits to some phone makers to sell 5G devices in the country. A report by QQ News yesterday, July 17, said OPPO has received approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and China’s Quality Certification Center.

5G Alliance

With the certification, OPPO will be able to launch and sell 5G phones in China. There are reports that it will launch the Reno 5G in its home country in the 3rd quarter of the year. So we expect it to arrive between now and September.

Just before OPPO received approval, Huawei got its own first, back in June. The tech giant announced on June 25 that has received a permit for its Mate 20 X 5G edition. The phone is set to go on sale later this month and may as well be the first 5G smartphone in China.

The Mate 20X 5G isn’t the only 5G phone made by Huawei that has got approval. There are said to be three others but are unnamed. Vivo, OnePlus (OnePlus 7 Pro 5G), and ZTE (Axon 10 Pro 5G) have also received approvals for their devices. Last month, Nubia and Lenovo also announced 5G versions of the Nubia X and the Z6 Pro respectively.

On second thought, any of these phones may be the first 5G device to go on sale in China. Nevertheless, folks will have several options to choose from

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Redmi Note 7 vs Realme X: Specs Comparison

The best-selling Android One line-up ever has finally a new-entry: the Xiaomi Mi A3. The new affordable device belonging to the only Xiaomi’s line-up with Android One is nothing more than a global variant of the recently-announced Xiaomi Mi CC9e for the Chinese market. The new handset belongs to the mid-range segment which includes the best-selling phones in the whole market, so it will have a lot of competitors. Among these ones, there is also another Xiaomi device: the Redmi Note 7. Will they cannibalize each other depending on the market? And what will happen with Realme X which is one of their best competitors from other smartphones manufacturers? Given that we define these three devices as three of the most valid choices in the affordable segment, we decided to compare them with each other in order to let you know which one you should go for.

Design

There is no challenge here, Xiaomi Mi A3is my favorite one because it has the most premium materials: glass for the back and aluminum for the frame, with an in-display fingerprint scanner making the rear side clean and stunning, as well as a high screen-to-body ratio and amazing light effects which change depending on light reflection. With its flagship-like pop-up camera, Realme X takes the second place, it is definitely not the winner because of its plastic design. Redmi Note 7 has a pretty nice glass back, but not as stunning as the Xiaomi Mi A3, and it comes with a plastic frame instead of aluminum.

Display

Xiaomi Mi A3 has a pretty nice display with its OLED technology showing brilliant colors, and it is even a very compact panel with its 6-inch size. Redmi Note 7 comes with a higher resolution that is a higher level of detail, but it has the less impressive IPS technology for more washed-out colors. Realme X is definitely the perfect one: not only it has the AMOLED technology, but also a higher Full HD+ resolution and a big, 6.53-inch display size. So it simply comes with the most complete display.

Specs & Software

Realme X has no rivals even when it comes to hardware and performance. Its Snapdragon 710 chipset, is ore powerful than both the Snapdragon 665 and 660 found on the Redmi Note 7 and the Mi A3. Further, the most powerful variant of the Realme X has a better memory configuration, with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. There is no expandable storage, but it is a detail you can ignore with such a powerful hardware department. When it comes to the software, I prefer the Xiaomi Mi A3 because it comes with Android One, so a stock Android experience, faster updates and longer software support by Google.

Camera

The Xiaomi Mi CC series is focused on camera quality, and so is the Xiaomi Mi A3. On the paper, the new Xiaomi mid-ranger has undoubtedly the best camera department with a triple setup on the back including a 48 MP main sensor, as well as an awesome 32 MP selfie snapper.

Battery

Last but not least, the batteries. Despite there is not a big difference in the battery capacities of these handsets, I firmly believe that Xiaomi Mi A3 will last a lot more on a single charge. This will happen most likely because it has a more efficient and compact display.

Price

Xiaomi Mi A3 debuted in the global market with a €250/$280 price tag, Redmi Note 7 costs €179/$200 globally, and Realme X costs €160/$180 in the Asian market (still unavailable globally). Overall, I would recommend the Xiaomi Mi A3 due to its longer battery life, Android One, premium design, and amazing cameras. But if you want a big display and better performances, Realme X is the best choice for you.

Blackview BV9600 limited offer brings the price down to $199.79!

Blackview BV9600 officially hit the market earlier this month offering a more affordable alternative to the BV9600 Pro flagship but without losing any of its toughness. If you are among those who seek for a phone like this but don’t want to spend a fortune, this is a perfect time to grab one. The Chinese manufacturer has an excellent promotion running until July 26th and is offering the device at just $199.79 on Blackview’s official store and on Aliexpress.

Blackview BV9600

The BV9600 retains the tri-proof design inherited from the BV series, which means it sports IP68/IP69K and MIL-STD-810G certifications, and together with the improved rubber design and aluminum alloy chassis, the BV9600 can withstand water submersion for up to 1.5 meters, dust, and drops from 1.5m high. Also, it comes with a big, 5580mAh battery for long use on a single charge.

Blackview BV600

What’s also great is that the company didn’t stint when choosing the hardware parts. The BV9600 comes with Helio P70 instead of the P60 found on the previous model and it offers a 10-30% boost in AI tasks as well as a 13% improvement on general tasks, along with reduced touch latency and improved gaming performance. In conjunction with the latest Android 9 Pie, it guarantees fluid and smooth performance.

Blackview BV600

Also, there is a side fingerprint sensor together with face unlock for maximum security. Face unlock is important especially for people working outdoors and get their hands dirty. Lastly, the camera supports AI processing for low light shots and delivers clear photos.

UMIDIGI X: New budget king with in-display fingerprint reader and 48MP leaked!

Following the hot-selling A5 Pro, UMIDIGI is developing the next budget king that will disrupt the market with its price and specs. According to leaked specs, the upcoming device is going to sport an in-display fingerprint sensor as well as a triple rear camera with 48MP main sensor! A leaked photo of the protective sticker implies that the device is already in production and reveals all the key specs.

UMIDIGI X

The specs revealed talk about a 6.35″ AMOLED display with an embedded fingerprint sensor. If this turns out to be accurate, the UMIDIGI X will be the first device of the company to come with these two high-end flagship features (48MP camera and AMOLED display). The sticker doesn’t reveal the shape of the display so we can’t tell if it will come with a notch or if the Chinese manufacturer will use a pop-up camera.

Talking about the camera, the X will come with a configuration similar to the A5 Pro. There will be a 48MP AI triple camera setup that will include an ultra-wide-angle lens. It is the first time that UMIDIGI stresses the AI capabilities of a phone’s camera and we can assume that it will come with the same camera features that S3 Pro gained after the latest software update (Super Night mode and AI scenes detection). This attention to software is very promising for the company’s users.

UMIDIGI X

In addition, the sticker also mentions the 4150mAh battery capacity that supports 18W fast charging as well as the multi-function NFC that supports Google Pay. Despite the large battery capacity, the UMIDIGI X will allegedly have a thin, 7.9mm profile. The device will most certainly come with a budget price but we won’t know for sure until it’s officially released. If you want to be among the first to get the upcoming device, UMIDIGI is giving you a chance to win its future smartphone here.

Chinese OLED maker Visionox to focus on flexible OLEDs for smartphones and wearable devices

Outside China, Visionox Co Ltd may not be a popular brand but the firm is a leading Chinese manufacturer of organic light-emitting diode screens popularly known as OLED screens. Some of the popular products you know have OLED panels supplied by Visionox onboard. Reports from China brightens the industry prospect of getting flexible OLED panels for foldable phones easily. The report indicates that Visionox is facilitating its expansion in display panels for smartphones, wearable devices, vehicle-mounted systems and smart homes due to the surging demand for flexible display screens.Visionox

Visionox’s vice-president is quoted by China Daily to have hinted that; “With the development of 5G, big data and cloud computing, the display panels will change peoples’ lifestyles and enhance the visual experience.” The company VP also added that cutting-edge technologies will stimulate applications for flexible screens. Further, he said; “The OLED industry is growing very rapidly. Visionox will focus on independent innovation and team with other companies in the industrial chain to produce flexible products.”

The company exec also emphasized that flexible active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes or AMOLEDs will have wider applications in smartphones, computers, smart wearables, vehicles, smart homes, virtual reality and augmented reality. AMOLEDs are more flexible with faster response and have high contrast and wide visual angles when compared to traditional liquid crystal displays or LCD panels.

Also, Visionox disclosed that it has provided AMOLED screens for Xiaomi’s recently revealed under-screen camera since June. Xiaomi’s prototype foldable phone which was revealed earlier this year also uses an OLED display panel from Visionox, according to the VP. In addition, ZTE’s 5G phone, the Axon 10 Pro also utilises an AMOLED screen supplied by Visionox. Another product having Visonox AMOLED screen is the Nubia Alpha smartwatch-like phone with a 4-inch flexible screen.

On top of that, the VP disclosed that the company currently has about 6,000 OLED patents. The firm has two sixth-generation flexible AMOLED display screen production lines in Gu’an, Hebei province, and Hefei in Anhui province. Its AMOLED display screen production line in Gu’an went into operation last year and can turn out 30,000 glass substrates (1,500 mm by 1,850 mm) every month. The production line can also meet the high-end, foldable screen demand for 90 million smartphones. Visionox started building its second flexible AMOLED production line in Hefei in December. It also has a monthly capacity of 30,000 substrates.

Although Samsung and LG currently blaze the trail in terms of revenue from OLED displays, with the push from Chinese firms like Visionox and even BOE technology, we expect to see a change in the market structure in no distant time.

Huawei patent application reveals a method and camera setup for vivid Moon capture

When Huawei P30 Pro was launched, one of the main highlights of the device was the 50X Optical Zoom lens it features. Huawei even shared camera samples of the moon reportedly shot using the P30 Pro’s camera. Soon after, moon capture began to trend with other OEMs also claiming their device can capture the moon as well.

Turns out the technology at play on the P30 Pro’s Quad camera setup is a recently patented one by Huawei. A recent announcement by the State Intellectual Property Office indicates that Hauwei has patented a process called “a method and electronic device for shooting the moon.” The patent application number is 201910134047.X and the application was made on February 22, 2019.

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi’s MIJIA Electric Screwdriver debuts for ¥159 (~$23) and the crowdfunding support is massive

The patent page shows that the technology provides a solution for shooting the moon and the camera setup to achieve this. The camera automatically recognizes the moon in the preview interface and enters the moon shooting mode after recognizing the moon. Thus, the lens is automatically focused on the moon and as such display a clear outline of the moon image in the preview interface.

The sketches accompanying the patent shows that during operation, a multi-frame moon image with clear contours under different exposures is collected. The acquired multi-frame images are processed differently to obtain photos of a clear and bright background including a clear and beautiful moon.

According to Huawei, this method can capture a vivid, crystal-clear moon in normal shooting mode or even when used by non-professional users. This will surely improve the user’s shooting experience. We must add that Huawei seems to be increasing the gap between its flagships’ cameras and those of rivals Huawei currently has the best phone cameras around. The P30 Pro and other Huawei flagship models have consistently maintained the lead atop DXOMark’s phone camera ranking.

Nokia 7.2 case renders matches leaked Nokia TA-1198

In early July, photos of a Nokia phone with model number TA-1198 surfaced online. The phone is yet to launch but it appears it may launch as the Nokia 7.2. Alleged case renders of the Nokia 7.2 have surfaced and they match the design of the leaked photos of the TA-1198.

Nokia 7.2 case render

The case renders show the phone has a notched display but as the live photos have shown, it is nowhere as small as what the render depicts.

The renders show that the volume rocker and power buttons are on the right while a third button which we believe to be the Google Assistant button is on the left. The bottom is home to a USB-C port and a cut-out for the speaker while a 3.5mm audio jack is at the top.

On the back, the Nokia 7.2 has a circular camera housing that holds three cameras and an LED flash. Another of the render shows the phone has a camera bump. Below the sensors is a fingerprint scanner.

If the Nokia TA-1198 is indeed the Nokia 7.2, then the phone will have an FHD+ display, a Snapdragon 660 processor, a 48MP primary rear camera, and a 3500mAh battery.
