OnePlus trolls Apple as it celebrates latest ranking as India’s premium smartphone brand

It is not uncommon to see phone manufacturers troll their main rivals as they all struggle to grab a chunk of the market share. In recent times, Apple has been the main recipient of such trolling from fierce rivals Huawei and Samsung at different times. Who would have expected OnePlus would join the gang so soon. But then, guess they’ll all go to any length to break the brand loyalty Apple enjoys globally.

Counterpoint recently released its smartphone market data for the Indian market and OnePlus was ranked as the No. 1 (fastest growing) premium smartphone brand in India. Overwhelmed with the feat, OnePlus took to Twitter and Apple was the recipient of the trolling. The company’s tweet announcing the achievement didn’t directly call out Apple but it made reference to Apple’s voice assistant Siri. The tweet also employed Apple’s style of capitalization in writing the words “iDare you”

There is no doubt OnePlus’ tweet is a publicity stunt but an impressive one that didn’t require throwing any shade. OnePlus have enjoyed a great deal of success as a result of its innovative features and affordable pricing, which will appeal to the buyers in India. Whereas Apple’s latest iPhone comes with way expensive pricing but similar features with Android flagships. Apple recently threw its own trolling at CES 2019 with a billboard with the teaser; ‘What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone’. Apparently, this is an indirect criticism of security vulnerability on Android OS.

Meizu Zero now available on Indiegogo crowdfunding for $1299

Apparently, Meizu didn’t design the flagship Meizu Zero to end up as just a concept phone. The Chinese company has plans to commercialise the smartphone and that has just commenced. The Meizu Zero crowdfunding campaign has now been launched on Indiegogo with the order expected to start shipping in April.Meizu Zero

We didn’t expect the Meizu Zero to come cheap but nothing prepared us for the $1299 price tag which is slammed on the device. But then, the sleek mobile phone looks to be worth that much with the innovative features crammed inside. The crowdfunding is looking for just 100 backers for the version which has the 1299 price tag. This model is dubbed “Exclusive Engineer Unit” and is said to be handmade by Meizu’s engineers. That puts a question mark on the ability of the company to mass-produce the model. There is another version tagged “Exclusive Pioneering Unit” and with a $2999 price tag but that version is sold out. Don’t be surprised about that, there was just a single unit available.Meizu Zero

Already 13 persons have backed the model as at the time of reporting. That means there are just 87 units left and the crowdfunding campaign will be open for the next 31 days. It is left to be seen what will happen next after the crowdfunding campaign. Perhaps, more units will be made available but the level of response during the crowdfunding exercise will determine that.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 teardown shows how its magnetic slider works

The Mi MIX 3 has received generally positive reviews. It is one of the best camera phones of 2018 according to DxOMark but what really sets it apart from other phones is its slider design which uses magnets instead of springs or an electric motor.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything has made a teardown video of the Mi MIX 3 and it also shows how the slider works. There are a bunch of magnets in the device and Xiaomi employed the basic rule of magnets – opposite poles attract and like poles repel. It is a simple but very effective solution that ensures the phone stays opened or closed.

The teardown video also revealed the bundled cable with the phone is specially designed to allow you to slide the phone open while charging. A third party cable won’t let you do so.

Huawei Y6 Pro (2019) vs Honor Play 8A vs Xiaomi Mi Play: Specs Comparison

Huawei just launched a new affordable device in Sri Lanka: the Huawei Y6 Pro (2019) which is slightly different from all other Huawei devices in terms of aesthetics. But is it all about design or it is a valid phone even inside? In order to establish it, just looking at the specs sheet is not enough. For this reason, we usually compare new smartphones with their best concurrence in the same price range. And among the best rivals of the new handset, there are Honor Play 8A and Xiaomi Mi Play. The former is one of the most affordable devices from Huawei’s sub-brand, while the latter is from a totally different company which represents the main Huawei’s Chinese rival. Here is an in-depth specs comparison.

Huawei Y6 Pro (2019) vs Huawei Honor Play 8A vs Xiaomi Mi Play

Design

As mentioned above, Huawei Y6 Pro (2019) has a unique design. Alongside the Huawei Enjoy Max, it is the only last-generation phone from one of the world’s best brands to come with a leather body. It is incredibly elegant and original, and it comes in two color variants. It also has thin bezels and a small dewdrop notch on the display that maximizes the screen-to-body ratio. Right after that, I would pick the Xiaomi Mi Play because of its elegant glass back and its gradient colors, that is not usual to find on a so affordable device. Honor Play 8A has a classic polycarbonate design that is very common on entry-level phones, and it does not have gradient colors, so it would be the last choice.

Display

Xiaomi Mi Play overclasses both its opponents because it comes with a display boasting a higher level of detail. It is the only Full HD+ panel of the trio and it shows sharper and more realistic images. At the same time, it comes with a slightly smaller size which makes it more compact and easier to use with one hand. The displays of Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 and Honor Play 8A are almost the same thing, they are just minimally different in size but the resolution is the same and so is the viewing quality.

Specs & Software

Unfortunately, we still do not know which chipset is on board of the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 as the company decided not to reveal it yet. But it should not be needed in order to establish which device will boast the higher performance. Indeed, Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 comes with max 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, while Xiaomi Mi Play has 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of integrated storage. We still do not know the SoC of the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019, but in case it is not the Helio P35 found on the Xiaomi Mi Play, we doubt it will be a better chipset than this one. Honor Play 8A loses the comparison too because it comes with the Helio P35 and max 3 GB RAM. All the phones come with a customized Android version based on Pie.

Camera

While Xiaomi Mi Play comes with a better hardware side, both Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 and Xiaomi Mi Play should have better camera performances. Both their rear and their front sensors come with a brighter focal aperture, and this means better shots in low light conditions. We have no idea about which device between Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 and Honor Play 8A will click better shots as we did not test the former and all will depend on software optimization.

Battery

All the batteries of these devices come with more or less the same capacity, so hardware components and optimization will make the difference. Given that Xiaomi Mi Play has a Full HD+ display, we believe that it will have worse battery life than both Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 and Honor Play 8A. The 8A has a slightly bigger battery and a slightly smaller screen, that is more efficient components. But if Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 has a more efficient SoC than the Helio P35, this may not matter and it may win in all the battery life tests.

Price

Honor Play 8A and Xiaomi Mi Play come with price tags of €100 and €170, respectively, in the Asian market. The price of the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 is not known yet (we believe it will cost more than Honor Play 8A because of its costlier design and because it is a Huawei device). With the actual (incomplete about the Y6 Pro) information available and given the marginal differences between all these handsets, I would personally go for the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 because of its more original leather design. But once I will know the chipset model and the price, my opinion might change.

Samsung announces 1TB eUFS 2.1 storage ahead of Galaxy S10 launch

While Toshiba has begun testing UFS 3.0 chips, it appears Samsung still plans to use UFS 2.1 for a little more while before making the switch. The Korean-electronics giant announced its largest capacity UFS storage today which has a 1TB capacity.

Samsung 1TB eUFS Storage featured

The announcement comes a few weeks before the launch of the Galaxy S10 series which has been reported to have a variant with 12GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

The 1TB eUFS 2.1 chip is a single-chip design and boasts an improvement in read and write speeds compared to the 512GB eUFS 2.1. The chip size is the same, measuring 11.5 x 13 mm and has 16 5th-gen 512Gb V-NAND flash memory layers.

Samsung 1TB eUFS Storage comparison

The 1TB storage has a sequential read speed of 1000MB/s, a sequential write speed of 260 MB/s, a random read speed of 58,000 IOPS and a random write speed of 50,000 IOPS. These are significant gains in speeds when compared to Samsung’s other versions.

Meizu Zero crowdfunding on Indiegogo goes live today at 22:00 UTC+8

Today makes it one week since Chinese phone maker Meizu unveiled the Meizu Zero flagship concept phone. The device comes as the world’s first smartphone without any physical buttons or ports. It is also the first ever phone to carry support for 18W wireless charging. The Meizu Zero will be available on crowdfunding on Indiegogo later today as scheduled. The crowdfunding will officially open at 22.00 UTC+8.Meizu Zero with 18W wireless charging

The pricing and availability will be made bare but don’t get your hopes too high. The Meizu Zero’s design requires that certain features you’ll find on a regular flagship are lacking like a SIM slot, 3.5mm audo jack, and even a charging port. Specs wise, the Meizu Zero is a stunner as it features a 5.99-inch curved OLED panel with full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The mSound 2.0 technology makes it possible for the smartphone to emit sound from the screen which eliminates the need for earpiece and external speaker. The screen of the smartphone is embedded with an in-screen fingerprint reader.

The Meizu Zero also comes with an IP68 certified dustproof and waterproof device and to keep it completely sealed, there is no opening on the device. Thus, it is equipped with linear motor-powered pressure-sensitive virtual buttons for power and volume. The rear panel of the smartphone is made up of ceramic. There is also no SIM card slot on the device but it carries support for eSIM.Meizu Zero

On the camera end, it packs a 20MP selfie camera and 12MP + 20MP dual camera module at the rear which is exactly the same one available on the Meizu 16th smartphone. It runs on Flyme 7 UI based on Android 9 Pie OS. Meizu says the Meizu Zero phone would be available in Black and White color options. We’ll keep you updated as soon as the Indiegogo page goes live.

“ZTE A2020 Pro” believed to be Axon 10 Pro appears on Geekbench

The Axon 9 Pro was launched back in August but didn’t go on sale until October but it was quickly forgotten with the launch of the new iPhones, the third-gen Pixels, and the OnePlus 6T. This year, its successor which is expected to be called the Axon 10 Pro may arrive earlier.

A ZTE phone has appeared on Geekbench and it is believed to be the Axon 10 Pro. It was benchmarked earlier today as the “ZTE ZTE A2020 Pro”.

ZTE Axon 10 Pro

The device runs Android 9 Pie and has 6GB of RAM. The benchmark scores – 3824 points for the single-core test and 10762 for the multi-core test – confirm it is powered by the Snapdragon 855 as they are similar to that of other Snapdragon 855 phones that have been benchmarked.

The Axon 9 Pro launched with a notched AMOLED display, support for wireless charging and Quick Charge 4+, and the series’ signature stereo Dolby Atmos speakers. We expect its successor to come with a redesigned display and the rest of the aforementioned specs. However, it will be nice to see it get a design overhaul that stands out from the competition. It will also be nice to get a non-pro variant.

Is Xiaomi working on a Penta Camera Smartphone? Photo watermark suggests it is

In recent times, we have seen the development of smartphone camera evolve from a single sensor to dual, triple and quad sensors. Nokia has been at the forefront of moves to incorporate penta-cameras on smartphones with the upcoming Nokia 9 tipped to feature such setup. Seems Xiaomi is also following suit with a Penta-camera phone in the works. This much was revealed by the company’s product director Wang Teng Thomas who shared a post on Weibo containing a photo with watermarks that indicate that it was “Shot on Mi AI Penta cam”. Apart from the watermarks, there is no other clue as to how the device will look like. The picture contains different Xiomi branded phones showing the different designs Xiaomi has utilised so far, ranging from waterdrop, notch to the full-screen of the Mi Mix 3. The photo itself, though, looks very sharp suggesting the five cameras will work to deliver stunning captures.

The increase in the number of sensors in smartphones is aimed at improving the quality of photographs and videos shot on the camera. More cameras also mean a wider range of focal length coverage to meet the needs of people in everyday use. The Xaomi exec deleted the post soon after it was posted, suggesting it was posted in error or was meant to be just a teaser. However, the design may likely feature on the Mi 9 as the watermark shows the device having the design is a Mi series model.

Samsung Galaxy A10 with Exynos 7885 (or Exynos 7904) and 2GB RAM seen on Geekbench

Samsung recently announced two mid-range phones in India. One is the Exynos 7904-powered Galaxy M20 and the other is the Exynos 7870-powered Galaxy M10. Now, another mid-range phone seems to be on the way, this time the Galaxy A10 and it has been spotted on Geekbench.

Geekbench says the Galaxy A10 is powered by the Exynos 7885 which is technically a higher-clocked version of the Exynos 7904. Yeah, blame Samsung’s insane naming scheme. Also, do read our opinion of the Exynos 7904 here. However, there is a possibility it is actually the Exynos 7904 as benchmark apps are said to incorrectly identify the 7904 as the 7885 due to the similarities between them.

Galaxy A10 geekbench

Even if the Galaxy A10 does come with the slightly more powerful Exynos 7885 processor, it might sell for less than the Galaxy M20 (at least this particular variant) as it has just 2GB of RAM compared to the M20 which has a base model with3GB RAM. There should be other RAM + storage configurations when it launches.

Redmi President starts display design poll; Xiaomi CEO votes for waterdrop-style notch screen

Last evening, Redmi President and Vice-President of Xiaomi Group Lu Weibing initiated a new poll to find which is the most preferred full screen design. Among the many options, the full screen design with pop-up selfie camera has received the most votes. Interestingly, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun voted for waterdrop-style display. Jun’s vote has giving birth to tumors that the Xiaomi Mi 9 will be arriving with a waterdrop notch enabled display.

As it can be seen in the below screenshot, the notch-less display with pop-up front camera is the most desired display design among Mi fans since it has received as around 31 percent votes. It is closely followed waterdrop-style notched display design with 27 percent votes.

Lu Weibing display design poll

The punch-hole display like the Honor V20, slider design like the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 and dual display like the Vivo NEX Dual Display have respectively received around 17 percent, 16 percent and 9 percent votes.
As mentioned above, Jun voted for waterdrop-style display which suggests that the Mi 9 could be arriving with such a display to offer higher screen space than the Mi 8 that featured a wider display notch. In the recent past, Jun has revealed that the Mi 9 would be equipped with faster charging technology.

A new Xiaomi phone with model number M1902F1A/T that was approved recently by 3C authority in China was found to carry support for up to 27W fast charging. It is speculated that it could be the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 9 flagship phone.

The handset is likely to come equipped with an in-display fingerprint reader. Compared to conventional in-screen fingerprint scanner enabled smartphones, the Mi 9 is expected to offer larger screen fingerprint unlock area of 25 X 50.2mm.

LG to soon adopt the waterdrop notch for its smartphones

LG is all set to launch its next-gen flagship smartphone — LG G8 ThinQ and while the renders leaked suggests that the device will come with the regular wide notch on top of the display, the company is slowing moving towards adopting the popular waterdrop notch design.

LG Waterdrop Notch Phone

According to the latest patent filed by LG, the South Korea-based company is all set to make a move towards waterdrop notch that will provide a higher screen-to-body ratio. However, the said design was first filed by the company in April last year.

The patent application describes a smartphone with having a vertical dual-camera setup on the back and a rear-facing fingerprint scanner. Based on the design, it seems that the phone will look similar to the Essential Phone with a notch in the phone’s center.

Looking at the sketches, the phone retains the 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom, which most smartphone manufacturers are ditching and there’s a SIM tray on top. The power button key is situated on the right side while the volume rocker keys are present on the left side.

LG Waterdrop Notch Phone

Meanwhile, the company is gearing up to launch the LG G8 ThinQ and LG V50 ThinQ 5G smartphone next month at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. Along with that, we expect the company to launch a few more mid-range devices at MWC 2019.

Recently, it was reported that the LG G8 will come with “Sound on Display” technology in which instead of having a traditional speaker, the sound is produced by vibrating the display panel. The sound is produced by vibrations of the screen caused by ‘exciter’ which is positioned behind the screen. LG is already using this technology in its Crystal Sound OLED TVs.

Under the hood, the phone is likely to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 flagship chipset. The phone’s renders featuring a notched display and dual rear camera sensors surfaced online a few days ago but the company’s Head of Global Corporate Communication denied that claiming that the renders are correct but are not of G8.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro’s AI completes unfinished 19th century symphony

In the present, AI is making its place in the tech world. It has started the new generation technological era with machines learning itself and performing tasks. AI works with various metrics running parallelly. It learns from the experience with techniques like deep learning, neural networks, and others. Since last year, it has started taking place in smartphones. Similarly, Huawei Mate 20 Pro has some inbuilt AI capabilities, thanks to the Kirin 980’s dual NPUs.

Today, Huawei posted a new video about an unfinished symphony which Schubert wrote in 1822 under Symphony Number 8. Schubert didn’t end it and had left it unfinished. Now, after near about 2 centuries, Huawei has decided to complete the unfinished symphony with the help of Huawei Mate 20 Pro’s AI. Though it’s a long wait but still we think late is better than never.

Huawei collaborated to complete the unfinished symphony using the Mate 20 Pro’s AI prowess. Huawei used the device’s dual NPUs to analyze the timbre, pitch, and meter of the existing movements to generate the remaining part. Now, Huawei has created the missing third and fourth movement of the symphony and is ready to present the same to the world on February 4. The symphony will be live performed at Cadogan Hall in London.

The melody created with Mate 20 Pro’s AI power was then used by Emmy award-winning composer Lucas Cantor to arrange an orchestral score. He said, “My role was to draw out the AI’s good ideas and fill in the gaps to ensure the final output was ready to be played by a symphony orchestra. The result of this collaboration with AI proves that technology offers incredible possibilities and the significant and positive impact it can have on modern culture.”

The Chinese company has posted a teaser of 20 seconds, through which you can get a hint of what would be happening on February 4th in London. It will be a moment of joy for the Schubert fans.

Recently, Huawei smartphone with model number MAR-AL00 was approved by China’s 3C authority. A variant of the same phone was spotted with model number MAR-LX1M at the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). Unconfirmed information suggests that that MAR-XXX phone could be the upcoming Huawei P30 Lite mid-range phone from the P30 series includes flagship phones like P30 and P30 Pro. Some information on the specifications of the P30 Lite have surfaced today. Also, it is speculated that the P30 Lite will be launching ahead of the P30 and P30 Pro phones that are to debut by the end of March.

Huawei P30 Lite case

Based on the display panel and case images that have leaked in the recent past, it can be said that the P30 Lite will be featuring a waterdrop notch screen, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and a vertical camera setup with triple lenses. The Huawei P30 is expected to arrive with 6-inch OLED screen with under-display fingerprint reader. Since the size of the display of the P30 Lite is almost same as P30 handset, it is likely that the Lite edition may feature a 6-inch. It will be an IPS LCD panel that will support full HD+ resolution.

Huwei P30 series display panel

The Kirin 710 chipset is rumored to power the Huawei P30 Lite.  The triple camera module of the handset is expected to feature 20-megapixel, 16-megapixel and 2-megapixel camera sensors. It is speculated that the P30 Lite could be releasing in some markets as Huawei Nova 4e. The P30 Lite may debut at the end of the coming month or early March. There is no information available on the pricing of the phone.
