Samsung Patent Filing Reveals Technology for Long-Lasting Graphene Batteries that May Charge Faster

Samsung Advanced Institute of Training (SAIT), a research wing of the South Korean company, has managed to synthesize a “graphene ball” through which lithium-ion batteries can be made to last longer and charge faster. In other words, it can increase the capacity of lithium-ion batteries by 45 percent as well as charge them five times faster.

The existing lithium-ion batteries can take around an hour to charge completely. The new technology can possibly reduce the charging time to just 12 minutes. It can be also used in electric cars in future as graphene ball batteries are able to maintain a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius.

The entire information on the findings of SAIT is available on Nature. SAIT created a three-dimensional graphene ball by synthesizing graphene with silica. The graphene balls were then used as anode and cathode for lithium-ion batteries. South Korea and the U.S. are the two regions were Samsung has filed a patent for this new technology.

The commercial use of lithium-ion batteries began in 1991 and since then it has been widely used in electronic devices. Because of its limitations, companies are now looking for alternatives. SAIT’s graphene ball technology appears very promising, but there is no guarantee whether Samsung will introduce it in its upcoming flagship smartphones like Galaxy S9 or Note 9.

SAIT is known for carrying out numerous technological innovations such as the development of the cadmium-free Quantum Dot materials that are used in Samsung’s flagship OLED TVs. In August, it had also opened an Artificial Intelligence (AI) lab in University of Montreal in Canada.

The Substitute Phone May Hold The Cure To Smartphone Addiction

Smartphone addiction is gradually turning out to be a problem faced by quite a number of persons the world over. This is no definitive way to determine addiction but the urge to always fiddle with the smartphone or reach for your mobile whenever there is a text message alert. Now, Austrian designer Klemens Schillinger has designed a device which he dubbed Substitute phone. Substitute Phone

The Substitute phone, just like the name implies, is meant to serve as a substitute to the actual smartphone. For those who are really very much addicted to their smartphones, trying to stop the usage could trigger withdrawal symptoms. That is where the Substitute phone comes in, as it helps such persons cope with being away from their smartphone.Substitute phone

The SUbstitute phone is made up of a series of five phones, which use stone beads designed in the pattern of the different motions used for smart devices, such as scrolling, zooming, and swiping. The aim is for users to utilize the gadget as a coping mechanism to tackle the urge of always checking the smart. The device doesn’t look too attractive. The body of the “phone” is made of black polyoxymethylene plastic. Perhaps, that was done on purpose.

The product doesn’t look too attractive and could get boring! But we’ll have to wait until it is officially launched before drawing a conclusion about that.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun Linked To World’s Largest Bitcoin Mining Company- Bitmain

Xiaomi‘s founder and CEO Lei Jun is a high flying entrepreneur and businessman with many parts. No doubt he is good at what he does that was why he was named as Businessman of the Year by Forbes in 2014. The Xiaomi founder is also entered the world’s billionaires club in 2015 when he was ranked in number 87 by Forbes with his personal worth estimated to be $13.2 billion. Lei Jun’s source of wealth may go beyond Xiaomi as the CEO seems to have his hands on several other investments. Lei Jun has now been linked to the world’s largest manufacturer of Bitcoin mining equipment Bitmain based in Beijing, China.Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun

The discovery was contained in a leaked document published by the Paradise Papers. The leak by Paradies Papers is, by the way, the second biggest data leak in history containing 1.4TB of data housing 13.4 million confidential digital documents relating to offshore investments which were acquired by German media outlet Süddeutsche Zeitung earlier this year. The data was only made public by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) last month. The leaked documents are a compilation of the company registers of firms in 19 tax havens around the world and some were also obtained from offshore investment service providers Appleby and Asiaciti Trust.

Lei Jun was roped in through his controls of Colorful Mi Ltd and Red Better Ltd, two offshore companies which the paper says are incorporated under the Chinese holding group – Beijing Changtong Wuxian Consulting Company. The holding company also appears to own Wu Ji Han & Co Ltd, a firm controlled by Bitmain co-founder Jihan Wu. Likewise, the other Bitmain co-founder Micree Zhan is listed as a director of Bitmain Cowin Inc and DivaIPTV Ltd, both of which are related to the same holding company.

Lei Jun or any of the individuals named in the leak are yet to publicly deny the claim and chances are they may never do that but the leak is significant considering that Bitmain is considered as one of the most profitable cryptocurrency companies in the world. The company manufactures custom mining rigs and the chips which power the rigs and also leases its computational power to other firms. Bitmain’s mining farms are estimated to rake in billions in revenue on an annual basis and the company has gained a reputation as one of the safest investments in the cryptocurrency industry.

Beginning with the Gionee M7 and M7 Power (Steel 2 Plus in some markets) in September, Gionee has added 6 more devices to the FullView lineup tonight at an event in China. Gionee F6

Gionee F6

Gionee F205

The Gionee F205 comes with a much smaller 5.45-inch display but with the same resolution as the F6. It ditches the metal and glass design for a an all-metal body.

Just because it is metal doesn’t mean it lacks in beauty. Coated in red paint, the Gionee F205 has dual silver antenna lines that reminds one of Kylo Ren’s (Star Wars) mask.

The Gionee F205 has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. It is powered by the MediaTek MT6739 quad-core processor which brings support for dual VoLTE.

There is an 8MP camera on the rear and a 5MP front facing camera for selfies. Battery capacity is 2670mAh which should last a day on moderate use. It also comes with Android 7.1 Nougat.

The Gionee F205 will sell for ¥999 (~$151) and comes in red and gold.

Gionee Steel 3

Gionee Steel 3

The Gionee Steel 3 has an all-metal design too but one that is very different from that of the F205. The rear has a sort of two-texture design. The top and bottom parts that house the rear camera and loudspeaker have a smooth finish but the middle part has a different finish.

The Steel 3 has a 5.5” HD+ display. There is a Snapdragon 425 under the hood and it’s paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage (256GB max.).

There are 8MP sensors on both sides of the phone. Just like the Steel 2, the Steel 3 also has its speaker on the back. Gionee says its an AAC 1511 speaker which pumps out loud and clear sounds.

Gionee M7 Plus Luxury Smartphone Launches With Snapdragon 660, 10W Wireless Charging & ¥4399 Price

The Gionee S11 and S11S launched earlier tonight might be considered as flagships but the Gionee M7 Plus is the true flagship of the night.

Gionee M7 plus

Gionee M7 Plus Design

The M7 Plus ditches the metal and glass design of the S11 duo for imported calfskin leather and 21K gold plated metal. The leather covers the back, while the metal frame and the rectangular metal plate housing the rear cameras get the gold-plating treatment.

Up front, the M7 Plus doesn’t look bad at all. The top and bottom bezels are significantly smaller and wear a blue coat rather than black and there are practically no bezels on the sides.

Overall, the Gionee M7 Plus isn’t quite the stunner but it does look better than the last Gionee phone with a leather body – the Gionee M2017.

Gionee M7 Plus Specs

The M7 Plus has a 6.43-inch AMOLED Full View screen with an 86% screen-to-body ratio. There is 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage which is more than sufficient. For the processor, Gionee has settled for the Snapdragon 660 mobile platform.

The Gionee M7 Plus packs dual rear cameras. One is a 16MP f/1.8 sensor and the other is an 8MP sensor. There is also an 8MP sensor in front for selfies.

The key features of the M7 Plus doesn’t end there. It packs a massive 5000mAh battery with support for 10W wireless fast charging – a first for Gionee phones. There is a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.0, dual SIM slots, and a micro USB port.

Gionee also says the M7 Plus has dual security chips like most of its other flagship phones. One chip is for data encryption and the other is for secure payments and for fingerprint encryption.

For the new flagships, Gionee has settled for a glass body. The glass is 3D but curved on all four sides, a similar design is what Xiaomi used for the Mi 6. But while the glass on the Mi 6 is plain, the one on the S11S and S11 has a reflective finish just like that of the HTC U11.

Gionee S11S and Gionee S11 Specs

Gionee S11S

The Gionee S11S is the more powerful device of the two. It has a 6.01-inch AMOLED display with a FHD+ resolution. There is 6GB of RAM on board and its paired with a MediaTek Helio P30 processor. Built-in storage is 64GB.

One feature the  S11S keeps from the Gionee S10 is the camera configuration. Just like its predecessor, the S11 has dual front and dual rear cameras. The front cameras are a 20MP sensor and an 8MP sensor while the cameras on the rear is a 16MP + 8MP combo.

The S11S has a fingerprint scanner on the rear. It also has NFC with support for mobile payment. Battery capacity is 3600mAh with 18W fast charging.

Gionee S11

The S11 packs a slightly smaller 5.99” display but with the same resolution and aspect ratio. It swaps the Helio P30 for the Helio P23 and has 4GB of RAM. Storage is still 64GB and there are four cameras too, however, the configuration is different. You have a 16MP+8MP combo in front and a 16MP+5MP combo on the rear. The battery capacity is also smaller at 3410mAh.

AMIGO OS 5.0

Both the Gionee S11S and Gionee S11 come with the new Amigo OS 5.0. It is still based on Android Nougat but comes with a bunch of new features.
