A US judge has ruled against Apple, banning the company from taxing or restricting external payment links in iOS apps, effective immediately. This victory for Epic Games and developers, part of a four-year legal battle, frees US App Store apps from Apple’s 30% in-app payment fees, shaking up the iPhone ecosystem.

Apple can no longer charge fees like its 27-30% cut on external purchases, block developers from styling or placing payment links, or limit buttons and calls-to-action. The company is also barred from using scare tactics—such as warning pop-ups—to discourage users from leaving an app to make purchases elsewhere. Developers can now guide users to third-party payment sites with only neutral warnings, a win for Epic and Spotify, who’ve clashed with Apple over similar issues.

The ruling, tied to the Epic vs. Apple saga since 2020, wasn’t helped by Apple VP Alex Roman’s false testimony or CEO Tim Cook’s push to defy a 2021 ruling, despite Phil Schiller’s caution, per TechCrunch. Previously, Apple forced developers to use its payment system, pocketing 30% of in-app purchases and banning external links or hints of alternatives, later using scare tactics for external payments.

Apple, vowing to appeal while complying, faces a shift as developers like Epic and Spotify plan immediate app updates. The table below sums up the details. This could lower costs for users and boost developer profits, especially for free-to-play games like Fortnite, but only in the US for now. One UI 7 is one of Samsung’s most significant software updates in recent years. After a slow and frustrating rollout, things are finally picking up pace. The update brings a fresh set of features and improvements that elevate the overall Galaxy experience. But unfortunately, not every Galaxy A-series user will get to enjoy it.

Samsung has decided to skip One UI 7 for several older Galaxy A-series devices, as the update — based on Android 15 — is only coming to select models. If you own a mid-range Galaxy phone, it’s worth checking the list below to see if you’re affected.

Samsung’s software update policy for Galaxy A-series phones

Samsung has been the best Android brand to offer longer software updates to cheaper models. While other brands offer a maximum of two OS upgrades, Samsung has been long offering three major upgrades. The brand quickly bumped it to four for models such as Galaxy A73 and Galaxy A55. This is impressive for mid-range phones, which is only exclusive to high-end phones on other brands.

More recent models such as Galaxy A56, Galaxy A36, and Galaxy A26 come with as many as six years of OS updates — taking the software update game to a different level. This shift makes Samsung’s mid-range lineup even more appealing for buyers who want long-term value without spending a fortune.

Samsung’s One UI 7 rollout plan for Galaxy A-series phones

After a frustratingly long wait, Samsung finally began rolling out on April 8, with recent flagship models getting the first bite. Surprisingly, older Galaxy flagships like the Galaxy S23, S22, and S21 series, along with Galaxy Tab S9 series, Tab S8 series, and Galaxy foldables, also began receiving the update in April — ahead of the schedule, as these models were initially planned for One UI 7 upgrade in May. This was totally unexpected from Samsung.

As for the Galaxy A-series, the rollout is planned for June 2025. However, seeing updates hitting devices much earlier than the official schedule, we won’t be surprised if Samsung starts updating Galaxy A-series models (at least a few models) to One UI 7 as early as this month.

Realme GT 8 Pro might be Realme’s most premium phone yet, price hike tipped

Realme appears to be repositioning its upcoming GT 8 Pro into the premium smartphone category, according to a recent leak as per tipster Digital Chat Station. The leak also suggests that the GT 8 Pro may arrive with a considerable price increase thanks to upgraded specs and positioning as compared to the Realme GT 7 Pro from last year.

The latest leak by DCS suggests that the Realme GT 8 Pro is said to be Realme’s most premium offering yet, bringing improvements in areas such as screen quality, processing power, and camera technology. These enhancements are expected to distance it from the current GT 7 Pro, which debuted in November 2024 at 3,599 Yuan (~$500).

There is a possibility that the GT 8 Pro could be launched at 3,999 Yuan (~$550) for the base variant. This potential shift could signal Realme’s intent to compete more aggressively in the flagship arena, putting it head-to-head with top-tier rivals.

Recent reports have revealed that the Realme GT 8 Pro may sport a flat OLED display with 2K resolution and an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner embedded under the screen. Under the hood, it is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 processor, the next-gen flagship chipset from Qualcomm.

Battery capacity might reach 7,000mAh, supported by 100W fast charging. One of the most striking upgrades could be in the camera department, with a 200-megapixel periscope lens likely to feature in the setup. Additionally, the device may adopt a metal middle frame to enhance durability and offer a more refined feel in hand. Since it is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2025, it is likely to ship with the Realme UI 7-based Android 16.

OnePlus is reportedly working on the Ace 5 Racing Edition and Ace 5 Ultra (or Supreme Edition) for China. Expected to debut this month, these devices are expected to feature the Dimensity 9400e and Dimensity 9400 Plus chipsets. For those who don’t know, the Dimensity 9400e is said to be an upcoming chipset based on the older Dimensity 9300+ chip. Rumors are rife that the brand is working on the OnePlus Nord 5 for the global market. In all likelihood, it will be based on the OnePlus Ace 5 Racing Edition. A new leak, courtesy of tipster Debayan Roy, has revealed the key specifications and price range of the Nord 5.

According to the tipster, the OnePlus Nord 5 will feature a flat OLED screen that supports a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It will feature a plastic frame and a glass back.

Under the hood, the Nord 5 will feature the Dimensity 9400e and a 7,000mAh battery that supports 100W fast charging. For photography, it will feature a 16-megapixel front camera and a 50-megapixel (main, OIS) + 8-megapixel (ultra-wide) dual-camera unit.

The Nord 5 will also offer an in-screen fingerprint scanner, an IR blaster, and dual speakers. While it is not mentioned in the leak, the device is expected to ship with the OxygenOS 15-based Android 15.

OnePlus Nord 5 price (rumored)

The leak states that the OnePlus Nord 5 will be priced at around Rs 30,000. This is not surprising considering that the predecessor was unveiled with a price tag of Rs 29,999 last year.

Apart from the Nord 5, the brand is also said to be working on the OnePlus Nord CE 5 with a massive 7,100mAh battery. However, it is speculated that the brand has decided to cancel the Nord CE 5 Lite this year.

Vivo T3 Ultra becomes an enticing deal with Rs 2,000 price cut

Vivo has revised the pricing of its mid-range Vivo T3 Ultra smartphone in India. Originally launched in September 2024, the device is now available at significantly lower prices starting May 1, ahead of the Flipkart SASA LELE sale 2025.

The Vivo T3 Ultra was introduced in India with a starting price of Rs 31,999 (~$380) for the 8GB + 128GB model. The 8GB + 256GB variant was priced at Rs 33,999 (~$400), while the top-end 12GB + 256GB version came in at Rs 35,999 (~$430). It first saw a Rs 2,000 reduction in January 2025.

Now, Vivo has slashed the price by another Rs 2,000. With this, the latest pricing is Rs 27,999 (~$330) for 8GB + 128GB, Rs 29,999 (~$360) for 8GB + 256GB, and Rs 31,999 ($381) for the 12GB + 256GB configuration. These prices are applicable across Flipkart, Vivo India e-store, and select retail outlets.

Vivo T3 Ultra specifications

The Vivo T3 Ultra features a 6.78-inch 1.5K curved AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 4,500 nits. It runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 9200+ chipset paired with up to 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. It debuted with FunTouch OS 14-based Android 14 and it is promised to receive Android 15 and 16 OS upgrades, apart from three years of security updates.

For imaging, it houses a 50-megapixel Sony IMX921 main sensor with OIS, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 50-megapixel front-facing camera. A 5,500mAh battery supports 80W fast charging, and the phone carries an IP68 rating along with an in-display fingerprint sensor and stereo speakers.

Benchmarking platform AnTuTu has released its list of the top 10 best-performing smartphones for April 2025. As usual, the chart ranks devices based on aggregate scores measured through CPU, GPU, memory, and UX performance. And this month, it’s mostly a Vivo affair.

The number one spot is taken by the Vivo X200 Ultra, a flagship device that was launched in April. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and pairs it with 16GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. That particular configuration managed to rack up a score of 2,953,489, placing it comfortably at the top.

More notable than the win itself is the fact that Vivo didn’t stop there. Second and third place also go to its phones, the X200s and X200 Pro, running on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400+ and Dimensity 9400, respectively. It’s a rare showing of a single manufacturer sweeping the podium, but not entirely surprising.

The iQOO 13, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, ranks fourth. Oppo Find X8 Ultra with 8 Elite and Find X8s+ with Dimensity 9400+ rank fifth and sixth, respectively.

OnePlus made it to the list with the OnePlus 13T, which also runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite. While we saw the phone scoring above 3 million before its launch, the final retail version settles at seventh place with a score of 2,758,405. That’s not bad, but far from what was hinted at during the promotion.

The regular OnePlus 13 also makes it into the top 10 with 2,737,820 points. It’s enough to beat out other major flagships, including Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra, which doesn’t appear on the list at all. Neither do any of the new Xiaomi 15 series models, which is notable given Xiaomi’s usual focus on performance-focused hardware.

As always with synthetic benchmarks, real-world performance tells a more complete story. But for now, Vivo’s numbers speak for themselves—quietly and without much room for argument.

iQOO Neo 10 Geekbench listing reveals its coming soon with Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 to rival Poco F7

iQOO offers different Neo-branded models in China and other markets. The brand unveiled the Neo 10 and Neo 10 Pro, equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 9400, in December 2024. In February this year, it announced the Neo 10R featuring the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip in India. Recent reports have revealed that iQOO is working on the Neo 10 for markets like India and Indonesia. The device, which bears the model number I2405, has emerged in the database of the Geekbench benchmarking platform.

The above Geekbench listing shows that the iQOO Neo 10 is powered by the recently unveiled Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset. Although the chipset’s name is not explicitly mentioned, the CPU and GPU (via source code) details mentioned in it are sufficient to conclude that it has the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 onboard.

The Geekbench listing further reveals that the Neo 10 is equipped with 12GB of RAM and Android 15. It achieved 2,093 points in the single-core test and 6,836 points in the multi-core test.

The inclusion of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chip suggests that the Neo 10 will be a rebranded or tweaked version of the iQOO Z10 Turbo Pro, which recently debuted with the said chipset in China.

In India, the iQOO Neo 10 will rival the Poco F7, which will also feature the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. For those who don’t know, the F7 will be a rebranded version of the China-exclusive Redmi Turbo 4 Pro.

At present, there is no official confirmation on the existence of the iQOO Neo 10 and Poco F7. However, it appears that both phones may debut this month in India.

Galaxy S25 Edge sensor sizes revealed — surprisingly close to S25 Ultra

Samsung’s ultra-slim Galaxy S25 Edge, set to launch on May 13, 2025, has had its camera specs spilled. Sporting a 200MP main camera and a 12MP ultrawide, the phone matches the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s primary shooter but sticks with a standard ultrawide. It will hit markets like the US by May 30.

The Galaxy S25 Edge, teased at January’s Galaxy Unpacked for the first time for its sleek 5.8mm titanium frame, is shaping up as a stylish flagship. The 200MP main sensor measures 1/1.3 inches—identical to the S25 Ultra’s—which is impressive given the phone’s slim profile. It’s expected to deliver crisp 2x zoom shots to offset the lack of a telephoto.

The 12MP ultrawide (1/2.55″ sensor) mirrors the S25 and S25+ but falls short of the Ultra’s 50MP ultrawide, a bummer for pixel peepers. The 12MP selfie camera, using an S5K3LU sensor (1/3.2″), aligns with the S25 lineup.

Despite its slim design, the S25 Edge packs a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and a 6.66-inch AMOLED (120Hz, 2,600 nits). Its 3,900mAh battery and 12GB RAM keep it competitive, though cooling may take a hit. For the first time in ten years, Xiaomi has taken the top spot in the Chinese market according to Canalys’ Q1 2025 data. The tech giant shipped 13.3 million smartphones and took a 19% share of the market.

Canalys says the company benefited from the synergy between its smartphone business and its broader ecosystem, which includes wearables, PCs, and even electric vehicles.

Its unified pricing strategy across online and offline channels reportedly helped it better leverage government subsidies, encouraging bundled purchases and reducing decision friction for buyers.

Huawei isn’t far behind, but Apple is in fifth

Huawei wasn’t far behind. It shipped 13 million units, holding an 18% market share and maintaining double-digit growth. The company’s performance was buoyed by continued investment in foldable phones, like the Mate XT (review) and Pura X, and a growing emphasis on HarmonyOS Next.

The in-house operating system is expected to account for 3% of China’s smartphone install base by the end of 2025.

Oppo and Vivo followed with 10.6 million and 10.4 million units shipped, respectively. Each held 15% market share, but only Vivo saw a slight year-on-year increase in shipments. Oppo’s sales declined by 3%.

More surprisingly, Apple fell to fifth place in the leaderboard. The Cupertino giant shipped 9.2 million iPhones, which is an 8% drop year-over-year. The decline follows its seasonal high in Q4 2024 and highlights ongoing challenges for the brand in a market increasingly focused on domestic alternatives and price-sensitive strategies.

All in all, mainland China’s smartphone market saw a modest recovery in Q1 2025. Shipments rose to 70.9 million units, a 5% increase from the same period last year.

Canalys says the uptick was driven by national subsidy policies and improving consumer sentiment, though analysts suggest much of the growth was pulled forward rather than generated organically.

Xiaomi launches MiMo-7B, its first open-source LLM for reasoning and coding

Xiaomi has quietly stepped into the large language model space with MiMo-7B, its first publicly available open-source AI system. Built by the newly assembled Big Model Core Team, MiMo-7B focuses specifically on reasoning-heavy tasks and outperforms competitors from OpenAI and Alibaba in maths reasoning and code generation.

As the name suggests, MiMo-7B is a 7-billion-parameter model. Despite being significantly smaller than most top-tier LLMs, Xiaomi claims it performs on par with more bloated systems, including OpenAI’s o1-mini and Alibaba’s Qwen-32B-Preview. All three are capable of AI reasoning.

Xiaomi’s MiMo-7B backbone

The backbone of MiMo-7B is a tight pre-training regimen. Xiaomi says it compiled a dense dataset of 200 billion reasoning tokens and fed the model 25 trillion tokens in total over three training phases.

The company also used a multiple-token prediction objective instead of the standard next-token prediction, claiming it shortens inference time without sacrificing output quality.

The post-training process involves a mix of reinforcement learning techniques and infrastructure improvements. Xiaomi used a custom algorithm dubbed Test Difficulty Driven Reward to address the sparse reward signals that often plague RL tasks involving complex algorithms. Additionally, Xiaomi implemented an Easy Data Re-Sampling method to stabilize training.

Infrastructure-wise, the company built a Seamless Rollout system to reduce GPU downtime during training and validation. The result, at least according to their internal numbers, is a 2.29× improvement in training speed and a nearly 2× jump in validation performance.

The rollout engine is also designed to support inference strategies like multiple-token prediction in vLLM environments.

MiMo-7B is now open source

There are four public versions of MiMo-7B:

Base: the raw, pre-trained model
SFT: a version fine-tuned with supervised data
RL-Zero: a reinforcement-learned variant starting from the base
RL: a more polished model built on the SFT version, said to deliver the highest accuracy

And Xiaomi does have benchmarks to back up the pitch, at least on paper. In math, the MiMo-7B-RL version reportedly scores 95.8% on MATH-500 and over 68% on the 2024 AIME dataset. For code, it lands 57.8% on LiveCodeBench v5 and just under 50% on version 6. Broader general knowledge tasks like DROP, MMLU-Pro, and GPQA are also represented, though the scores sit in the mid-to-high 50s—respectable for a 7B model, but nothing revolutionary.

But now, Derick Gant credits his Apple Watch for saving his life after he suffered from a stroke. He was exercising outdoors when the stroke hit, causing him to experience a fall.

Thankfully, Gant was wearing his Apple Watch, which managed to detect the fall and offered to call emergency services. While Derick initially brushed off the fall, he couldn’t feel his legs or arms after a few minutes. This prompted him to reach out for help. After a short wait, paramedics came to treat him. But the Apple Watch not only managed to detect the fall, it also automatically sent out alerts of the incident to Gant’s emergency contacts.

Derick, a 57 year old man, managed to make a full recovery within a year, but thanked his Apple Watch after the entire ordeal. The stroke was caused by his pre-existing medical conditions, which impacted the oxygen delivery to his brain. In a similar incident, a senior citizen was also saved by the fall detection feature in the UK.

Baseus launches 67W 3C GaN charger with retractable cable, AI thermal control & foldable plug

Baseus has officially launched the Retractable Cable Charger 67W 3C in China, a compact, all-in-one GaN fast charger that’s built for travel and convenience. It is priced at 249 yuan (roughly $34) and designed to replace bulky adapters and tangled wires with a smarter, integrated alternative.

The charger features an 82cm retractable USB-C cable that pulls out smoothly and locks into eight adjustable lengths. Once you’re done charging, the cable retracts magnetically into the body using built-in N52H magnets. The cable is TÜV-certified and made from ultra-flexible, eco-friendly TPE, designed to withstand over 30,000 stretch cycles and 11,000 swing tests.

The charger sports three USB-C ports with a combined output of 67W, making it powerful enough to charge a laptop, phone, and tablet simultaneously. It equips the sixth-generation GaN (gallium nitride) technology, allowing higher power efficiency while keeping the size small and heat levels low. Measuring just 70 × 58 × 37mm and weighing 198.9g, it easily slips into travel pouches or pockets.

It also features a triple-layer thermal management system with aerospace-grade graphene and thermal silicone, reducing surface temperature by up to 6°C during heavy usage.

The 67W charger supports multiple charging protocols including PD3.0, PPS, UFCS, QC3.0, SCP, and FCP, offering broad compatibility across Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and more. Despite packing in a retractable cable and three ports, the device remains smaller than many OEM laptop chargers, thanks to Baseus’s compact Pocket IN stacking design and dual-layer pearl-finish coating.

The known PC maker unveiled the Dell 14 Plus series with a starting price tag of $1,000 for the Intel variant. However, the new AMD Krackan Point APUs have just been announced with a more affordable price tag. The entry level model of the new starts from $800, while the 2-in-1 variant costs $850. The base Dell 14 Plus is equipped with the new AMD Ryzen AI 5 340 APU, which offers an 8 core CPU with 12 threads and the RDNA3 based Radeon 840M integrated graphics.

The starting storage configuration includes 16GB of LPDDR5 7500MHz RAM and 512GB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage. There is also a Ryzen AI 7 350 variant that is paired with the Radeon 860M iGPU and 1TB of SSD, which costs $950. For 32GB of RAM and a better iGPU, buyers need to spend $1,150. If the names of the chips sound familiar, it is probably because they are new AI CPUs from AMD that are positioned right below the high end Strix Point processors that includes the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.

Other notable features include IPS LCD displays with a 1920 x 1200 resolution, an HDMI 1.4 port, two USB Type C ports, WiFi 7, a fingerprint scanner for security, a 64Wh battery pack, an FHD webcam, and a slim body that weighs just 1.52 kilograms.
