Apple’s first foldable iPhone rumored to be a Fold and not a Flip

Apple’s much-anticipated debut in the foldable smartphone market is drawing closer, with rumors suggesting a potential launch in the second half of 2026. Initially, speculation leaned toward a clamshell design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. However, recent insights from display industry expert Ross Young hint at a different direction.

Foldable iPhone Could Rescue Apple’s Sales Slump

According to Young, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is likely to feature a larger, book-style form factor akin to the Galaxy Z Fold series. This shift aligns with rising consumer interest in larger foldable devices, as seen in the growing popularity of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup.

The timing of Apple’s entry into the foldable market is critical. While the segment has experienced steady growth over the past few years, 2023 and 2024 have seen a slight slowdown. Apple’s arrival could breathe new life into the market, drawing in fresh users and spurring innovation.

A foldable iPhone with a larger form factor would allow Apple to showcase its design expertise and software optimization, potentially delivering a smoother user experience than current foldable offerings. The premium pricing of such a device could also significantly bolster Apple’s revenue and profitability.

Currently, the foldable market is dominated by Android manufacturers like Samsung, Google, OnePlus, and Huawei, all of whom have made strides in functionality. However, high prices remain a barrier to widespread adoption, contributing to the market’s recent stagnation.

Analysts project Apple’s entry could increase foldable market growth by 30%, followed by sustained annual growth of 20%. If executed well, Apple’s first foldable iPhone could redefine the category and push the industry into its next phase of evolution.

In the meantime, Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 17 series in 2025, including the highly anticipated iPhone 17 Air. Touted as the thinnest iPhone ever, this device is expected to set new benchmarks for sleek and modern design.

Sony PSP’s 20th Anniversary: Revisiting the Legacy of Sony’s First Handheld Console

Sony debuted the PlayStation Portable (PSP) on 12th December 2004 in Japan. So as we approach the 20th anniversary of the PSP, let’s reflect on how this console shaped the handheld gaming market. It was Sony’s bold entry into handheld gaming, so let’s dive into its history, reception, and legacy.

Sony PSP
Sony PSP

1. Sony PSP: What made it special?

At the time of its launch, the Sony PSP arrived with impressive performance despite its form factor. Sony wasn’t the first in the handheld segment, but it brought AAA titles to gamers on the go. Since Sony is known for its exclusives, the Portable has an impressive lineup of games. It has a bar form factor with a 4.3-inch LCD screen that offers 480 x 272 resolution. The PSP offered two should buttons, the four iconic PlayStation face buttons, a directional pad, and several other buttons. This console had a wireless LAN switch, and a USB mini-B port on the top.

Under the hood, the PSP used two CPUs (as a main CPU and Media Engine). These processors were paired with 32MB of RAM (64MB in later models). An 1,800mAh battery pack powers the Sony PSP, which offers anywhere between 3 to 6 hours of gameplay. A console is only as great as the games it offers and the PSP’s lineup did not disappoint. Popular franchises like God of War, Final Fantasy, and Gran Turismo made their way to the device, bringing a console-like experience on the go.

2. Reception

By the end of its production in 2014, Sony had sold over 80 million units worldwide. This made the PSP a massive success and the only real competitor to Nintendo’s handheld monopoly. During its initial release, the Portable was praised for its stunning display, high quality graphics, and ability to handle multimedia tasks. It was considered a premium device that combined gaming and entertainment. While the PSP had stiff competition from Nintendo’s DS, it managed to carve out a loyal fan base.

3. Legacy

After the success of the PSP and 10 years of production, Sony decided to bring a successor called the PS Vita (PlayStation Vita). This model came with various upgrades in terms of design and performance, bringing modern features like remote play and digital storefronts as well. Users could now store music, photos, and more. Unfortunately, the more expensive PS Vita was considered a commercial failure for a number of reasons, which we shall get into at a later date.

Sony has yet to release another true handheld gaming console since the Vita. The only thing we got is a glorified PS controller with a screen, which Sony calls the PlayStation Portal (Works via Remote Play). However, rumors have hinted at a planned PlayStation handheld, which can run games natively. Sony may make a surprise announcement after the PSP’s 20th anniversary or later on. But the PSP’s legacy will likely continue on as handheld consoles are becoming popular once again.

OnePlus Ace 5 gaming performance revealed, to be on par with Snapdragon 8 Elite phones

OnePlus is expected to announce the OnePlus Ace 5 series of smartphones later this month in China. Ahead of the expected launch, reliable tipster Digital Chat Station has tested the real-world performance of the Ace 5, focusing on demanding mobile games. According to DCS, the tests were conducted in a controlled environment with a room temperature of approximately 20°C, and the screen brightness locked at around 440 nits. All tests were performed in performance mode.

OnePlus Ace 5 gaming performance

In “Honor of Kings” with ultra-high graphics settings and a 10V10 mode, the OnePlus Ace 5 achieved an average of 119.5 fps with a power consumption of 3.38W, significantly lower than the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in terms of power usage. Its power management under medium to low loads is comparable to current flagship chips like the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

In “Genshin Impact” at max settings while exploring and fighting in Sumeru, the Ace 5 maintained an average of 60.2 fps with a power consumption of 4.8W. This power consumption is also notably lower than that of the standard 8G3, with better temperature control, bringing it close to the performance of the 8 Elite.

In “Honkai: Star Rail” during high-load scenarios, the Ace 5 experienced significant frame rate fluctuations but still managed 55.2 fps with a power consumption of 5.7W, outperforming the regular 8 Gen 3 by a large margin.

The leaker added that the device features a 1.5K 120Hz BOE X2 flat display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 16GB LPDDR5X RAM, and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage. It scored 2261 for single-core and 7188 for multi-core on Geekbench 6.

While the raw performance data suggests it is a more aggressive version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the actual gaming experience shows a clear difference. DCS further said that thanks to its “chip-level gaming technology,” the Ace 5’s power consumption and temperature are on par with the 8E under high-pressure tests, making it feel like a generational leap.

OnePlus China President Louis Lee claims that the gaming performance of the OnePlus Ace 5 is on par with phones powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite. Louis also acknowledges that the chip-level gaming technology of the Ace 5’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 enhances the gaming performance compared to the regular version of the chip. Therefore, he has unofficially dubbed the chip as Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.5.

The POCO C-series, traditionally known for its affordability, is expected to offer a budget-friendly 5G device in the C75 5G, while the M7 Pro 5G might cater to consumers looking for slightly more premium features in the same price range. Both phones would be part of POCO’s strategy to tap into the growing demand for budget smartphones with 5G connectivity, especially in India where 5G rollout is expanding rapidly.

For context, POCO’s C65 was launched in India in December of the previous year, marking the last entry in the C-series, making the C75 5G a welcome addition. Similarly, POCO M6 Pro 5G launched earlier this year, so a successor in the M7 Pro is highly anticipated.

What to Expect from the POCO M7 Pro 5G and POCO C75 5G?

The POCO M7 Pro 5G has already appeared in various certification listings, including the US’s FCC and Singapore’s IMDA. Based on these listings, the M7 Pro 5G is rumored to be a rebadged version of the Redmi Note 14 5G, albeit with a few modifications, including a dual-camera setup rather than the triple cameras seen in its predecessor. The design is expected to feature a dual-tone finish and a square rear camera module, marking a departure from the single-tone, less pronounced camera island of the M6 Pro. Additionally, the device might run on HyperOS.

Meanwhile, the POCO C75 5G is expected to differ from the C75 4G variant already available in other markets. The 5G version will likely come with the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 chipset, paired with a large 6.88-inch HD+ 120Hz display. The phone is also expected to pack a 5,160mAh battery with 18W charging support, running on Android 14 with HyperOS.

For photography, it could feature a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP primary sensor, accompanied by two secondary sensors of 2MP and 5MP, similar to the recently launched Redmi A4 5G but with slight differences in the camera configuration.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra more details leaked: A familiar flagship with some Surprises

Xiaomi is gearing up for the release of its latest flagship, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, which is expected to launch soon—either in January or February, following in the footsteps of its predecessor. While many details are still under wraps, a recent leak shared by the well-known tipster Digital Chat Station offers intriguing insights into the device’s design and features.

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is likely to carry forward the design language of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, with some minor adjustments. The device is expected to sport a 6.73-inch curved OLED display, maintaining the same resolution of 1440 x 3200 pixels and 120Hz refresh rate seen in the previous model. However, the focus of attention is clearly on the phone’s camera setup.

On the rear, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra will feature a 1-inch main camera with an f/1.63 aperture. This main sensor will likely provide impressive low-light performance and detailed shots, but there’s no mention of the variable aperture. Accompanying it will be a 50 MP 70mm zoom telephoto lens (down from the 75mm lens with 3.2x magnification on the previous model), as well as a 200 MP 100mm periscope telephoto camera (a reduction from the 120mm 5x telephoto lens of its predecessor). The tipster previously claimed that the periscope telephoto will have 4.3x magnification.

Battery: not as impressive as expected

While many competitors are pushing battery capacities upwards of 6,000mAh, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is rumored to come with a battery in the range of 5,450mAh to 5,800mAh. While this is a sizeable capacity, it falls short of what some rival phones offer. This decision, if true, is likely influenced by the quest to opt for a sleek design, potentially avoiding a thick, bulky phone. For context, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra measured 9.2mm in thickness and weighed around 220g, so the 15 Ultra could be quite similar in terms of physical dimensions. Nonetheless, this is just a speculation, and the tipster has since deleted the post.

On the performance front, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra will likely feature the new Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, offering top-tier processing power for gaming, multitasking, and image processing. Additionally, expect support for fast charging, similar to last year’s model, ensuring that the device can recharge quickly despite its moderate battery size.

In conclusion, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra appears to be a solid successor to the 14 Ultra, offering high-end camera features, a sleek design, and the latest in mobile performance.

Comparing Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro and OnePlus Pad Pro: Which is Better?

Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro and OnePlus Pad Pro are two premium Android tablets that cater to diverse needs with impressive features. Xiaomi focuses on delivering a sharper display, versatile cameras, and a competitive price, while OnePlus emphasizes raw performance, a larger screen, and longer battery life. Both tablets have flagship-level specs, making them strong contenders in the mid-range tablet market. This comparison delves into their features to help you decide which tablet aligns better with your preferences and usage requirements.

1. Design and Display

Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro
Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro

The Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro features an 11.2-inch IPS LCD display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, delivering a sharper pixel density (344 PPI) and higher peak brightness of 800 nits. Meanwhile, the OnePlus Pad Pro offers a larger 12.1-inch screen, making it slightly better for media consumption, although its resolution provides a lower pixel density (304 PPI). Both tablets boast Dolby Vision, HDR10 support, and 144Hz refresh rates for buttery-smooth visuals. However, the Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro includes an always-on display, a bonus for quick at-a-glance updates.

In terms of build, both devices are sleek with aluminum frames and backs, but the OnePlus Pad Pro’s slightly larger size may make it less portable. If compactness and a sharper screen matter more, Xiaomi has the edge, while OnePlus shines with its immersive, expansive display.

2. Specifications

OnePlus Pad pro
OnePlus Pad Pro

The Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro runs on the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, which, though slightly less powerful, offers reliable performance for most tasks. OnePlus uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, giving it a slight edge in terms of raw power, especially for multitasking and gaming. Memory options are robust on both, with OnePlus offering up to 16GB RAM, ideal for future-proofing.

Battery life is similar, with the Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro featuring an 8850 mAh capacity versus OnePlus’ 9510 mAh. Both support 67W charging, but OnePlus has a marginally larger battery. The Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro balances power efficiency with HyperOS, making it ideal for extended use. If performance is a priority, OnePlus wins; for optimized power efficiency, Xiaomi edges ahead.

3. Camera

Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro
Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro

Xiaomi’s dual-camera setup includes a 50 MP main sensor and a 2 MP depth camera, producing versatile results, especially for photos requiring bokeh effects. Its 32 MP front camera is notably better for selfies and video calls. The OnePlus Pad Pro features a simpler 13 MP rear camera and an 8 MP front shooter, offering decent performance for general use but lagging behind Xiaomi in detail and clarity.

Xiaomi’s edge in camera specs makes it a better choice for users who prioritize content creation or sharper video call quality, while OnePlus keeps it simple with solid but unspectacular results.

4. Pricing

The Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro starts at approximately $399, undercutting the OnePlus Pad Pro’s starting price of $499. This makes Xiaomi a compelling value proposition, offering flagship-level features at a more accessible price. OnePlus justifies its higher price with a more advanced chipset and a larger screen, appealing to those who prioritize performance and immersive viewing.

If budget is a concern, Xiaomi is the obvious winner. For users willing to invest more for slightly better performance and screen real estate, OnePlus provides a strong option.

5. Conclusion

Unique to Xiaomi are features like the side-mounted fingerprint sensor and always-on display, providing added convenience. The HyperOS 2’s clean, optimized interface complements these extras. On the other hand, OnePlus brings a larger battery, a more advanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and a 16GB RAM option for power users.

For general versatility and camera excellence, Xiaomi excels. Meanwhile, OnePlus delivers unmatched processing power and battery longevity, making it better suited for heavy-duty tasks or gaming.
