Sony debuted the PlayStation Portable (PSP) on 12th December 2004 in Japan. So as we approach the 20th anniversary of the PSP, let’s reflect on how this console shaped the handheld gaming market. It was Sony’s bold entry into handheld gaming, so let’s dive into its history, reception, and legacy.

1. Sony PSP: What made it special?

At the time of its launch, the Sony PSP arrived with impressive performance despite its form factor. Sony wasn’t the first in the handheld segment, but it brought AAA titles to gamers on the go. Since Sony is known for its exclusives, the Portable has an impressive lineup of games. It has a bar form factor with a 4.3-inch LCD screen that offers 480 x 272 resolution. The PSP offered two should buttons, the four iconic PlayStation face buttons, a directional pad, and several other buttons. This console had a wireless LAN switch, and a USB mini-B port on the top.

Under the hood, the PSP used two CPUs (as a main CPU and Media Engine). These processors were paired with 32MB of RAM (64MB in later models). An 1,800mAh battery pack powers the Sony PSP, which offers anywhere between 3 to 6 hours of gameplay. A console is only as great as the games it offers and the PSP’s lineup did not disappoint. By the end of its production in 2014, Sony had sold over 80 million units worldwide. This made the PSP a massive success and the only real competitor to Nintendo’s handheld monopoly. During its initial release, the Portable was praised for its stunning display, high quality graphics, and ability to handle multimedia tasks. It was considered a premium device that combined gaming and entertainment. While the PSP had stiff competition from Nintendo’s DS, it managed to carve out a loyal fan base.

3. Legacy

After the success of the PSP and 10 years of production, Sony decided to bring a successor called the PS Vita (PlayStation Vita). This model came with various upgrades in terms of design and performance, bringing modern features like remote play and digital storefronts as well. Users could now store music, photos, and more. Unfortunately, the more expensive PS Vita was considered a commercial failure for a number of reasons, which we shall get into at a later date.

Sony has yet to release another true handheld gaming console since the Vita. The only thing we got is a glorified PS controller with a screen, which Sony calls the PlayStation Portal (Works via Remote Play). However, rumors have hinted at a planned PlayStation handheld, which can run games natively. Sony may make a surprise announcement after the PSP’s 20th anniversary or later on. But the PSP’s legacy will likely continue on as handheld consoles are becoming popular once again.

The latest leak from OnLeaks (via 91mobiles) has revealed the full specifications of the OnePlus 13R, giving us an in-depth look at what to expect from this next-generation smartphone.

Key features and specifications of the OnePlus 13R

The OnePlus 13R will boast a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1264×2780 pixels, offering a 120Hz refresh rate and 450 PPI. This display is similar to the OnePlus 12R, but it’s expected to feature improvements such as enhanced peak brightness for a better viewing experience. For context, the predecessor reaches 1600 nits in direct sunlight and can reach as high as 4500 nits during HDR video playback.

Under the hood, the OnePlus 13R will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 flagship chipset, which promises better performance and efficiency than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 found in the OnePlus 12R. The phone will come with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, though additional configurations could be available at launch or later, following the same pattern as its predecessor. In terms of battery and charging, the OnePlus 13R will pack a 6,000mAh battery (up from the OnePlus 12R‘s 5500 mAh), but it will reportedly support 80W fast charging, a slight downgrade from the 100W charging found in the OnePlus 12R. The Chinese tech giant is set to launch in the region in three color options, namely Red, Black, and Blue variants. While it isn’t as compact as the Sound Pocket model, it’s built with an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. So you can use it outdoors and don’t need to worry about splashes, rain, or dirt that could ruin other basic Bluetooth speakers. Xiaomi will be launching the Sound Outdoor speakers alongside the Redmi Note 14 series in the Indian market on 9th December 2024.

The portable speaker can deliver a 30W sound output from its subwoofer, tweeter, and two passive radiators. The brand promises to offer rich bass from its enhanced sound quality. Xiaomi is preparing to launch its latest tablet duo, the Xiaomi Pad 7 and Pad 7 Pro, to international markets after their initial debut in China on October 29. Recently, both tablets were spotted in the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification, which hints at an imminent global launch.

According to the FCC listing, both the Xiaomi Pad 7 and Pad 7 Pro are expected to feature advanced wireless network capabilities. The standard Pad 7 will support Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), while the Pad 7 Pro will be equipped with the more advanced Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) standard. Additionally, both tablets will run on Xiaomi’s custom HyperOS 2.0, which debuted with the company’s latest smartphones and offers an optimized user interface across devices.

The certification also revealed memory configurations for both models. The Xiaomi Pad 7 will come in three variants: 8GB RAM with either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage, and a more premium 12GB RAM version with 512GB of storage. The Pad 7 Pro will offer more options, with 8GB or 12GB of RAM paired with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage.

Specifications of the Xiaomi Pad 7 and Pad 7 Pro

Where the two tablets differ most significantly is in their internal specifications. The Xiaomi Pad 7 is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 chipset, a solid mid-range processor. OnePlus Ace 5 gaming performance revealed, to be on par with Snapdragon 8 Elite phones

OnePlus is expected to announce the OnePlus Ace 5 series of smartphones later this month in China. Ahead of the expected launch, reliable tipster Digital Chat Station has tested the real-world performance of the Ace 5, focusing on demanding mobile games. According to DCS, the tests were conducted in a controlled environment with a room temperature of approximately 20°C, and the screen brightness locked at around 440 nits. All tests were performed in performance mode.

OnePlus Ace 5 gaming performance

In “Honor of Kings” with ultra-high graphics settings and a 10V10 mode, the OnePlus Ace 5 achieved an average of 119.5 fps with a power consumption of 3.38W, significantly lower than the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in terms of power usage. Its power management under medium to low loads is comparable to current flagship chips like the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

In “Genshin Impact” at max settings while exploring and fighting in Sumeru, the Ace 5 maintained an average of 60.2 fps with a power consumption of 4.8W. This power consumption is also notably lower than that of the standard 8G3, with better temperature control, bringing it close to the performance of the 8 Elite.

In “Honkai: Star Rail” during high-load scenarios, the Ace 5 experienced significant frame rate fluctuations but still managed 55.2 fps with a power consumption of 5.7W, outperforming the regular 8 Gen 3 by a large margin.

The leaker added that the device features a 1.5K 120Hz BOE X2 flat display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 16GB LPDDR5X RAM, and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage. It scored 2261 for single-core and 7188 for multi-core on Geekbench 6.

While the raw performance data suggests it is a more aggressive version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the actual gaming experience shows a clear difference. DCS further said that thanks to its “chip-level gaming technology,” the Ace 5’s power consumption and temperature are on par with the 8E under high-pressure tests, making it feel like a generational leap.

OnePlus China President Louis Lee claims that the gaming performance of the OnePlus Ace 5 is on par with phones powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite. Louis also acknowledges that the chip-level gaming technology of the Ace 5’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 enhances the gaming performance compared to the regular version of the chip. Therefore, he has unofficially dubbed the chip as Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.5.

Oppo Find X8 Ultra receives radio certification; launch timeframe tipped

Oppo has launched the Find X8 and Find X8 Pro flagship phones equipped with the Dimensity 9400 chipset in multiple markets in recent weeks. Reports have revealed that the brand is also working on two more Find X8-series phones, namely, the Find X8 Ultra and Find X8 Next. The Next-branded model is expected to sport a compact form factor, whereas the Ultra variant will be the most advanced model in the X8 series. It appears that the device may debut in the first quarter of 2025, as the phone has reportedly bagged its first certification in China.

The image above reveals that a new Oppo phone with the model number PKH120 has received approval from China’s radio certification platform. The listing indicates that the device will support satellite connectivity. According to reliable sources from China, including Digital Chat Station and WHYLAB, the PKH120 model number belongs to the upcoming Oppo Find X8 Ultra.

Now that the Find X8 Ultra has received radio certification in China, it seems that it won’t take too long for it to debut in the home market. Most likely, the phone will also receive certifications from other Chinese platforms, such as 3C and TENAA, in the coming weeks and will probably go official in Q1 2025. According to DCS, the phone will debut after the upcoming Chinese Spring Festival, which suggests that it may debut in February or March 2025.

The major highlight of the Find X8 Ultra is that it will come equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Like the Pro model, it will also have a pair of dual periscope telephoto cameras.

According to reports, the Find X8 Ultra’s quad-camera setup will have a 50-megapixel LYT-900 primary camera with OIS support, a 50-megapixel Sony IMX882 ultra-wide lens, a 50-megapixel LYT-701 periscope telephoto camera with a 75mm focal length and OIS support, and a 50-megapixel IMX882 periscope telephoto camera with a 150mm focal length and OIS support.

Other reports have revealed that the Find X8 Ultra will have a 6.82-inch OLED panel that supports a 2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It may come with other features, such as a 6,000mAh battery, 100W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, an ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint sensor, and ColorOS 15-based Android 15.
