Oppo Find X8 Pro zoomed shots showcase details across the entire zoom range

Oppo released its 2024 flagship lineup towards the end of last month. One of the standout features of the Pro model, the Find X8 Pro, is its dual 50MP periscope telephoto setup, offering both 3x and 6x zoom options.

Now Oppo’s Zhou Yibao has shared image samples of the phone, showcasing the ability of the periscope telephoto setups.

Oppo Find X8 Pro: advanced zoom paired with AI enhancements

Aside from slightly inconsistent colors between the 3x and 6x periscope lenses, all the images have a decent amount of detail and none of them suffer from noise either. Oppo is also utilizing AI to add details to the zoomed shots. In fact, The image samples align closely with Oppo’s claims: “The new generation of AI super-resolution algorithm and the new optical structure design complement each other, and with clear, natural and restored image compensation, the unreachable scenery can be captured clearly, and telephoto photography has entered a new era.”

For those unfamiliar, the Find X8 Pro comes with a triple 50MP setup on the back and a 32MP selfie camera. While the zoom setup is similar to last year’s Ultra model, the image processing system has actually improved a lot, resulting in much faster shutter speeds. In fact, the recently released OnePlus flagship, the OnePlus 13, also packs the same image processing algorithms and delivers the improvements. This is especially beneficial for slightly low light conditions, where the camera system typically relies on l longer exposure to capture the required amount of light.

Oppo markets this new image processing system as ‘Ultra-high-speed shadowless capture’, where users can just raise their hand and press the camera control button to capture crisp and clear details. All of this is paired with the benefits of collaboration with Hasselblad.

In other aspects, the phone is housing the Dimensity 9400 chip, boasting a significant improvement across CPU, GPU, and AI performance. Design-wise, a notable change is the repositioning of the Hasselblad logo to the center of the camera island, enhancing the overall symmetry.

Apple reportedly developing its own WiFi 7 chips for iPhone 17 and above

Apple is working on self-developed Wi-F 7 chips for its upcoming products, including the highly anticipated iPhone 17 series, set to launch in the second half of 2025.

iPhone-17-Pro-new-button

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from Tianfeng International has revealed that these new chips will be manufactured using TSMC’s N7 process, marking a critical step in Apple’s efforts to enhance its ecosystem integration and reduce reliance on third-party suppliers.

Kuo indicates that Apple plans to transition its entire product line to its own Wi-Fi chips within three years. This strategic shift not only aims to lower costs but also to improve the overall integration of Apple’s devices. DigiTimes further reported that some of Apple’s new iPads launched in 2025 could also feature these self-developed Wi-Fi chips, underscoring the company’s commitment to in-house component design, a project that has reportedly been in development since 2021.

Apple aims to reduce dependence on external suppliers

The push for self-designed Wi-Fi technology aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of reducing dependence on external suppliers. Currently, Apple relies on Broadcom for its Wi-Fi chips, and a successful transition could enhance the performance and efficiency of its devices. While the specific consumer advantages of Apple-designed Wi-Fi chips remain unclear, the shift suggests potential improvements in connectivity and compatibility across Apple’s ecosystem.

Speaking of the iPhone 17 series, it could bring other exciting features as well. Reports suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro will introduce a refreshed button layout with a single button that replaces the volume buttons and the Action button.

The company has just introduced a Capture Button across the entire iPhone 16 series, aiming to make the camera more accessible. This design change is notable, as Apple’s innovations are typically exclusive to the Pro models for a few years before reaching the base and Plus models. This shift in strategy suggests a significant redesign in hardware for the iPhone 17 lineup. Notably, it will also include a new ‘Air’ or ‘Slim’ model, which promises a slimmer design, appealing to consumers who favor lightweight devices without sacrificing performance.

Samsung giving up on Exynos? Shutting down 4 nm, 5 nm, and 7 nm manufacturing facilities due to poor demand

Samsung Electronics is reportedly scaling back operations at its semiconductor foundry facilities, specifically targeting its 4 nm, 5 nm, and 7 nm production lines due to weak demand. This decision comes in light of significant financial losses, estimated to be in the tens of billions of won during the third quarter of this year, as the company seeks to reduce costs and streamline operations

Samsung Exynos Chipset

According to industry sources, Samsung has already shut down over 30% of its production capacity of the above mentioned process nodes on its Pyeongtaek campus, with plans to increase this to nearly 50% by the end of the year.

Samsung Foundry is reportedly facing significant losses

According to South Korean publication ChosunMedia, the semiconductor division has struggled to secure sufficient mass production orders from major tech companies like Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm, leading to a reported deficit of 1 trillion won (roughly USD 724 million) in the last quarter. In an effort to minimize expenses, including electricity costs, the company is opting to turn off production equipment rather than maintaining idle operations.

This move reflects a broader industry trend, particularly as lower-than-expected orders from Chinese fabless semiconductor companies have affected production volumes in the 4 and 5 nm processes.

Increased U.S. regulations on semiconductor exports to China have prompted these companies to delay projects, exacerbating the situation for Samsung’s foundry business.

Experts warn that these shutdowns could weaken Samsung’s competitive position in the semiconductor market. As Samsung reallocates resources to its memory division, which has historically been more profitable, its foundry business may fall behind rivals like TSMC. Professor Lee Jong-hwan of Sangmyung University cautioned that this gap could hinder Samsung’s ability to catch up once market conditions improve.

Samsung itself is opting for more Snapdragon chips

Amidst these challenges in the foundry sector, Samsung appears to be pivoting away from its in-house Exynos chips in favor of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors. Reports indicate that the upcoming Galaxy S25 series may feature the Dimensity 9400 instead of the Exynos 2500. This shift suggests that Samsung is struggling to meet performance and profitability expectations with its Exynos line, leading to an increased reliance on Qualcomm’s offerings, even in home appliances where AI features are becoming essential.

Realme GT 7 Pro supports underwater photography, 3x optical zoom, 120x digital zoom; Camera samples released

Xu Qi Chase, Realme Vice President and President for Realme Global Marketing has revealed details about the Realme GT 7 Pro’s periscope telephoto camera. Additionally, Realme has shared camera samples of the device to showcase its camera prowess, including underwater photography.

Realme GT 7 Pro periscope telephoto camera details and photography samples

Xu Qi Chase revealed that the Realme GT 7 Pro features an innovative ship-style multi-reflection structure, significantly reducing the thickness of the periscope mechanism. The telephoto capabilities have been further enhanced, with the native focal length increased from 65mm to 73mm. Combined with a new AI super-resolution telephoto algorithm, this results in impressive performance.

According to reports, the realme GT 7 Pro will come with a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. The brand has confirmed that the camera will support 3x optical zoom, 6x lossless zoom, and 120x digital zoom. Additionally, the GT 7 Pro will support underwater photography mode because it is an IP68/IP69-rated water-resistant device. Shown below are some underwater photography samples captured using the GT 7 Pro.

According to reports, the Realme GT 7 Pro’s rear camera setup will have an OIS-assisted Sony IMX906 50-megapixel primary camera. An 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto will complement the primary camera.

Other notable features of the Realme GT 7 Pro include its custom-made Samsung OLED panel, which is said to consume low power. The 6.78-inch screen supports a 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and up to 6,000nits of peak brightness. Under the hood, the GT 7 Pro features the Snapdragon 8 Elite and a 6,500mAh silicon-carbon anode technology supporting 120W rapid charging. The device will ship with the Realme UI 6.0-based Android 15 pre-installed.

After iPhone 17 Slim, the Galaxy S25 series is also rumored to include a ‘Slim’ model

Samsung Electronics is reportedly exploring the addition of a ‘Slim’ model to its upcoming Galaxy S25 flagship lineup. This strategic move appears to be a direct response to the competitive landscape, particularly as Apple gears up to release its own ‘Slim’ / ‘Air’ variant with the iPhone 17 series next year.

Samsung-Galaxy-S24-Series

According to industry sources, the slim model will build on the design principles of the Galaxy S25. Samsung has already done something similar with the recently introduced Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which is based on the Z Fold 6.

Samsung aims to release this new version to gauge consumer interest, and if it receives a positive reception, the company might consider expanding the slim concept into the Galaxy S26 series in 2026.

This approach reflects a broader strategy to revitalize a market that has seen stagnant demand due to minimal design changes over the years.

As smartphone performance has improved, many consumers struggle to recognize the differences between successive models. This lack of differentiation has contributed to stagnation in an already saturated market. Recognizing this challenge, Samsung appears poised to make significant design shifts, especially with the knowledge that Apple is also moving toward slimmer devices. The upcoming iPhone 17 ‘Air’ or ‘Slim’ model is thinner and slightly smaller than the existing Plus model, signaling a potential trend toward more compact smartphones.

A separate launch for the Galaxy S Slim?

The Galaxy S Slim is anticipated to debut in the second quarter of next year, following the launch of the standard Galaxy S25 models. This staggered release is likely designed to prevent cannibalization within the lineup while allowing Samsung to monitor the demand for slimmer smartphones effectively.

Creating thinner devices necessitates adjustments in components like displays and batteries, which could impact overall performance. Therefore, the upcoming models will be closely watched for how well they balance thinness with functionality.

In addition to the slim model, Samsung is reportedly considering a significant shift in its branding strategy, potentially marking the end of the iconic Galaxy name. This move, if confirmed, could redefine the company’s approach to its flagship devices, indicating a new era in Samsung’s smartphone offerings. The company’s efforts to innovate and adapt to changing market dynamics underscore the importance of staying relevant in a highly competitive industry.

Google confirms earlier release for Android 16, hints at second update later in 2025

Following a rumor earlier this month, Google has officially confirmed an earlier-than-usual release timeline for Android 16.  The next major iteration of the mobile operating system is now slated for a launch sometime between April and June of 2025, a significant shift from the traditional Q3 or Q4 release window.

Android 16 Baklava

This change in strategy, according to Google, aims to “better align with the schedule of device launches across the Android ecosystem.”

Android 16 update earlier than expected

Traditionally, new Pixel phones would hit the market with the current Android version, while manufacturers like Samsung wouldn’t integrate the latest iteration until their flagship launches later in the year.  This often left a gap where some high-end devices wouldn’t benefit from the newest Android features for several months.

The earlier release of Android 16 could close that gap. If Google achieves its target and releases the update by the end of June, the upcoming Pixel 10 line will launch with Android 16 pre-installed.  Similarly, manufacturers like Samsung, known for their July unveilings of their next-generation foldables, could integrate the latest Android version from the get-go.

However, Google’s plans don’t stop at Android 16. The company also hinted at a second Android release in 2025. This “minor release,” scheduled for the fourth quarter (October-December),  will reportedly focus on “feature updates, optimizations, and bug fixes since the major release.”

While Google hasn’t confirmed its official designation, it’s understood that this could be Android 16.1, offering a refinement of the major update released earlier in the year.

All in all, the earlier release of Android 16 appears to be a strategic move by Google to ensure its Pixel devices and other Android flagships launch with the latest software on board.

Additionally, the upcoming minor update in Q4 2025 suggests Google is committed to maintaining a more rapid development and update cycle for its mobile operating system.

OnePlus 13 vs OnePlus 12: What are the Big Upgrades?

OnePlus has finally announced the OnePlus 13. The device was released as the brand’s latest generation flagship smartphone in China. So here’s a list of all the upgrades and changes that the OnePlus 13 offers over its predecessor, the OnePlus 12.

OnePlus 13
OnePlus 13

1. OnePlus 13 vs OnePlus 12: Design

Design is one of the areas that the company placed a special focus on this year. Overall, the OnePlus 13 has a refined new look. From the back, the first major difference you could tell is with the new camera module, which no longer blends into the metallic frame. The OnePlus 13 is also offered in three distinct options, which includes Silk Glass (White), skin-friendly velvet leather (Blue), and Obsidian (Black).

In comparison, the OnePlus 12 only offered glass back in different colors. There are changes not just to the form but also to its function. The 2024 OnePlus flagship arrives with an IP68/IP69 rating, which makes it more resistant to water and dust than the IP65 rating on the OnePlus 12.

2. Faster Performance

OnePlus hasn’t simply improved performance in the OnePlus 13 but also upgraded the cooling system with a massive 9925mm² VC cooling. It needs a robust thermal management system since the new flagship is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite.

This is a high end chip for next gen premium Android phones. The chip brings a 45% increase in CPU performance, a 44% boost in power efficiency, a 40% increase in GPU performance, and a 35% faster ray tracing as well. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 powered OnePlus 12 is quite capable, but the OnePlus 13 offers cutting edge hardware.

3. Bigger Battery

OnePlus launched the OnePlus 12 with a respectable 5,400mAh battery pack. It also supports 100W wired fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging. While the charging rates have remained the same between the two generations, the OnePlus 13 packs a massive 6,000mAh battery capacity.

4. Cameras

Both models pack a triple camera setup on the rear, but the brand employs different image sensors. The OnePlus 12 packs a 50MP Sony LYT808 primary sensor with OIS, a 64MP OmniVision OV64B periscope telephoto shooter (OIS, 3x zoom), and a 48MP Sony IMX581 ultra wide angle lens with autofocus. The front houses a 32MP selfie shooter.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 13 features a 50MP Sony LYT808 main sensor with OIS, a 50MP LYT600 periscope telephoto with multi-prism reflective periscope structure (OIS, 3x zoom), and a 50MP 114° ultra wide Samsung S5KJN5 sensor. For selfies and video calls, there is a 32MP shooter on the front. The OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 12 are optimized by Hasselblad image processing.
