iPhone SE 4 to have similar design as iPhone 16, leak claims

Apple‘s budget-friendly iPhone SE line is rumored to be getting a significant design overhaul in 2024, finally ditching the familiar yet dated look of the iPhone 8 series.

Previously leaked CAD renders of the iPhone SE 4 show that it might adopt the iPhone 14’s design, with flat edges and a single rear camera. However, well-known leaker Fixed Focus Digital throws a curveball, suggesting the rear design will actually resemble the upcoming iPhone 16.

If this is true, the SE 4 might sport dual rear cameras arranged vertically, similar to the iPhone X—a design Apple hasn’t used for several generations.

iPhone SE 4 CAD Renders

Adding a dual-camera system would be a notable upgrade for the SE line, which has traditionally had only a single lens. While the exact capabilities of the new camera are unknown, it could offer better low-light performance or telephoto features.

Although the SE 4 might look similar to the iPhone 16, the latter will likely differentiate it with a “Dynamic Island” design, while the SE model might keep the classic notch used in previous iPhones for the front-facing camera and Face ID.

Remember, these details are based on leaks and have not been confirmed by Apple. However, given the pattern of past SE releases and the aging current design, a refresh in 2024 seems likely.

If the leaks are accurate, the new iPhone SE could come with a modern design and improved enhanced camera features. We’ll keep you updated with any new details about the iPhone SE 4 as they emerge.

MediaTek Dimensity 8400 AnTuTu score leaks; it’s better than Snapdragon 8s Gen 3

MediaTek‘s upcoming flagship SoC, the Dimensity 9400, has been a hot topic in the rumor mills for months now. However, it might not be the only high-end chip the company is developing. Leaker Digital Chat Station in a recent Weibo post revealed that MediaTek is also working on the Dimensity 8400, a sub-flagship SoC with impressive performance.

The leak reveals that the Dimensity 8400 scores between 1.7 million and 1.8 million on the AnTuTu benchmark. This score puts it on par with, or even ahead of, the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, which manages around 1.7 million points in the same test.

But raw power isn’t the only story. The tipster mentions that the most affordable smartphone with the Dimensity 8400 could cost as low as 1,500 yuan (roughly $200). If true, the devices with this SoC will not only offer better performance than their Qualcomm counterparts but will also be cheaper.

Additionally, Chinese tech outlet IT Home reports that in April, Digital Chat Station revealed that Redmi is working on smartphones with various processors, including the Dimensity 9300+, Dimensity 8400, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.

Interestingly, three of these Redmi models are rumored to share design features, such as a metal frame, glass body, 1.5K or 2K displays, 100W fast charging, and large batteries.

While it’s not confirmed which Redmi phone will use the Dimensity 8400, it might be part of the upcoming K80 series, though this is just speculation on our part.

Keep in mind that these details are still based on rumors, so the official benchmark scores and pricing for the Dimensity 8400 phone could differ from what’s mentioned above. But if the leaks are accurate, the Dimensity 8400 might offer flagship-level performance at a mid-range price, making the smartphone market even more competitive.

Global smartphone market grew 6% YoY in Q2 2024; highest YoY growth in last 3 years – Counterpoint

The global smartphone market is experiencing a rebound after several years of market slump. The latest global smartphone market survey by Counterpoint Research points to a 6% year-on-year (YoY) growth in the second quarter of 2024. The reported growth is the highest in the last three years, according to Counterpoint.

The global smartphone sell-through grew YoY for the third consecutive quarter in Q2 2024 in a rapid recovery from the weakest year. The top five smartphone brands remained unchanged from the previous quarters with Samsung retaining the top spot. Apple’s market share declined marginally while Xiaomi grew the fastest among the leading five global brands.

The latest Counterpoint Research’s Smartphone 360 Monthly Tracker indicates that the current resurgence is driven by improving consumer sentiment as well as macroeconomic factors. The report also indicates that the Europe and Latin American markets recorded the fastest growth in Q2 2024 (both in double digits). The growth numbers point to increasing purchasing activity in the region above the 2023 levels.

In China, Huawei continued its resurgence on the back of several activities that cemented its resurgence and gradual recovery. Emerging markets especially in Latin America and Asia performed better than established ones.

According to Counterpoint’s Research Director Tarun Pathak, the growth in smartphone sales over the last three quarters is a welcome development in the industry, after a record slump in 2023. However, the markets were quick to rebound due to a combination of factors including improving consumer sentiments and enhanced inventory positions.

The outlook remains bright for the remaining quarters of the year. Smartphone brands were quick to react to the growing consumer demand by refreshing their portfolios with several exciting offerings. The market has also seen an increased proliferation of premium models (possibly scaled down) with affordable price tags.

Samsung accounted for 20% of the market and retained its top position for Q2 2024. It was followed by Apple (16%), Xiaomi (14%), Vivo (8%), and OPPO (8%). The ranking remained the same as that of the corresponding position in Q2 2023. However, Xiaomi recorded the highest YoY growth performance of 22% within the period. The cumulative share of the top five brands declined YoY in Q2 2024 partly due to pressure from a few resurgent brands like Huawei, Honor, Motorolla, and Transsion group brands. The market is projected to continue a slow and steady volume increase with the top 10 brands accounting for 90% of the market.

Samsung Galaxy phones may finally get satellite connectivity feature

Samsung seems to be getting closer to adding satellite communication to its Galaxy smartphone lineup. Android Authority discovered code strings related to this in mobile apps, strongly hinting that Samsung Galaxy phones could soon receive this upgrade.

To be specific, mentions of “satellite mode” and “emergency texts via satellite” were found in Samsung’s Emergency SOS, Messages, and Phone apps, respectively. This hints that the tech giant is preparing to enter the satellite connectivity race started by Apple. However, it’s still yet not clear when the feature will be released or the compatible phone models.

Code in Emergency SOS App
<string name="satelliteText">Emergency texts via satellite</string>
<string name="satelliteHeading">If you call emergency services when you’re out of range or not connected to a mobile network, we’ll connect you via satellite so you can send an emergency text</string>

Code in Samsung Messages App
<string name="satellite_network_mode_title">Satellite mode not supported</string>
<string name="samsung_message_do_not_provide_satellite_network_mode">Samsung Messages doesn't support satellite messaging. To send and receive texts via satellite, you need to make Google Messages your default messaging app.</string>

Code in Phone App
<string name="sat_mode_inline_cue_text">You're in satellite mode. You can send text messages, including to 911. Emergency calls may still connect if a mobile network is available near you.</string>
<string name="sat_mode_send_message">Send message</string>
<string name="sat_mode_waring_dialog_message">You can send and receive text messages in Satellite mode. Emergency calls may still connect if a mobile network is available near you.</string>

According to Android Authority, the feature might debut with the Android 15 operating system, though integrating it into Samsung’s One UI 7 interface could take longer.

Samsung introducing satellite communication in its phones wouldn’t be that surprising. The feature has been rumored ever since Apple introduced satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14.

Samsung executive Park Yong-in even promised two-way satellite connectivity for Galaxy phones in 2024, yet the feature is still absent from the latest Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6. It’s possible that a software update could enable satellite connectivity on these devices.

Unlike Apple’s limited emergency messaging focus, Samsung’s satellite connectivity is rumored to go beyond emergencies, allowing users to send messages through any app.

Interestingly, Google Pixel phones have also shown signs of satellite connectivity, although the feature is active for Pixel phones as well. This collective evidence suggests satellite messaging for Android phones, including Galaxy models, could be available in the coming months.

Samsung files patent for LG Wing style foldable

Samsung has been a leader in the foldable phone market with its Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip lines. But the company isn’t resting on its laurels. A newly discovered patent application published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) suggests Samsung might be exploring a unique foldable design that combines elements of existing phones.

The patent sketches depict a phone that initially appears conventional. However, it has a swiveling mechanism where the main display can rotate 180 degrees to reveal a secondary display underneath. We’ve seen this rotating functionality on the LG Wing which has a secondary screen for multitasking.

But here’s the twist: the patent also shows a hinge on the main display, suggesting the phone could even fold in half along that crease. When combined, these features create a phone with a standard display mode, a rotating secondary display mode like the LG Wing, and a fully unfolded tablet-like mode.

The patent also reveals a camera module in the top right corner, along with a charging port, microphone, and speakers at the bottom.

On paper, this is a pretty unique phone design that technically offers the experience of three foldable in one. In its standard form, the phone is compact. The rotating secondary display allows for multitasking similar to the LG Wing. Finally, the fully unfolded state provides a large uninterrupted display experience.

However, don’t just get too excited. Samsung frequently files patents for innovative technologies, and a patent doesn’t guarantee a product’s eventual release.

Additionally, even though the design looks unique, we must consider its practicality. The combined hinge and swivel mechanism might be structurally complex and potentially prone to wear and tear.

Furthermore, Samsung recently filed another patent for a triple-foldable smartphone. With both these patents surfacing, it’s clear Samsung is actively exploring the future of foldable phone technology.

While these concepts might not become commercially available products anytime soon, they offer a glimpse into the possibilities Samsung envisions for the future of mobile displays.

Xiaomi Mijia Pocket Photo Printer 1S with AR photos, fun filters goes on sale for $55

Xiaomi recently unveiled the Mijia Pocket Photo Printer 1S, a portable printer that brings instant physical copies of your favorite digital moments. The portable printer is now up for sale in China for 399 yuan (approximately $55). It is now available on JD.com. Let’s check out its key specs.

Xiaomi Mijia Pocket Photo Printer 1S

Xiaomi Mijia Pocket Photo Printer 1S Specifications:

The printer utilizes ZINK zero-ink printing technology, eliminating the need for messy ink cartridges. Instead, the printer uses heat to activate color crystals embedded within the special ZINK paper. This method also produces photos with a built-in adhesive backing, allowing for easy sticking on scrapbooks, phone cases, or other creative projects.

The printer connects to the Mi Home app, where users can access various editing tools and features. This includes selecting filter options, creating collages with various layouts, and even adding personalized watermarks with avatars and signatures.

The 1S introduces “AR photos,” where you can embed videos or short audio clips (up to 15 seconds for video and 60 seconds for audio) within the Mi Home app. When you scan the printed photo with the app, the video or audio comes to life, adding another layer of interactivity and sentimentality to your cherished memories.

The Mijia Pocket Photo Printer 1S supports Bluetooth 5.2, allowing up to three devices to connect and print photos sequentially without needing a Wi-Fi network. The printer itself is lightweight and compact, measuring just 82mm x 124mm x 22mm, making it easily portable for on-the-go printing.

Xiaomi claims the included 5 sheets of ZINK paper and a ribbon good for 20 prints can be used to create photos for as low as 1.98 yuan (around $0.27) per sheet, with additional 50-sheet packs of ZINK paper available for purchase.

The printer supports image formats such as JPEG, PNG, and HEIF and is compatible with Android 8.0 or iOS 12.0 and above. The Mi Home App allows customization and management of AR content, with an account limit of up to 100 AR photos.

Is the Galaxy S23 Ultra worth it in 2024?

The Samsung Galaxy S series has long been a mainstay in the premium Android phone market, and the S23 Ultra was no exception when it launched in 2023.  But with the arrival of the S24 lineup, is the S23 Ultra still a good option in mid-2024?

Let’s explore the reasons for and against picking up last year’s flagship. We’ll outline the key reasons why the S23 Ultra might still be a tempting buy and the drawbacks that could steer you towards the Galaxy S24.

1. Reasons to choose the Galaxy S23 Ultra

Hardware That Holds Up

The S23 Ultra features a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which remains competitive in 2024. While it may not match the newer S24’s Gen 3 chip in benchmarks, most users won’t notice a significant difference in everyday tasks. Multitasking, running intensive games, and navigating complex workflows are all smooth experiences here.

The display is another standout feature of the S23 Ultra. Its 6.8-inch AMOLED panel delivers stunning visuals with vibrant colors, deep blacks, and a buttery-smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Whether you’re streaming videos, browsing the web, or gaming, the screen makes content consumption a delight.

One of the defining features of the S23 Ultra is its integrated S Pen stylus. This pressure-sensitive tool allows precise handwriting recognition, detailed photo editing, and artistic expression. However, its utility is a matter of personal preference. For users who rely heavily on note-taking or digital creation, the S Pen is a valuable asset. For others, it might be a rarely used afterthought, adding bulk to an already large phone.

Camera

The S23 Ultra’s camera system was a major selling point at launch and it is still one of its highlights. The 200MP main sensor captures exceptional detail, especially in well-lit conditions. The 12MP ultrawide and dual 10MP telephoto lenses with 3x and 10x optical zoom offer versatility for various shots. Low-light performance is also impressive, thanks to advanced image processing.

Battery Life

The S23 Ultra packs a 5000mAh battery, which is on par with most flagship phones. However, user experiences vary depending on usage patterns. Power users might find themselves needing a top-up before the end of the day, while moderate users could comfortably stretch to a full day.

The phone supports fast charging, but the included charger is capped at 45W, which is slower than some competitors. Wireless charging is also present, but again, it’s not the absolute fastest available. But these features stay same on the S24 Ultra, so you’re not missing out.

Software

At launch, the S23 Ultra came with Android 13. However, it now runs on Android 14-based One UI 6.1, which includes all the AI features found on the Galaxy S24 phones. This means it still offers much of the functionality of the latest flagship.

The Price Factor

The main reason to consider the S23 Ultra over the newer S24 Ultra is its price. With discounts and price drops, especially during sales like Prime Day, the S23 Ultra becomes a much more affordable option.

Currently, the device is available at a discounted price of around Rs 85,000 in India via Amazon, and with the Prime Day sale ongoing, you might find it even cheaper. This makes it a more attractive choice for buyers who want the best of the specs but don’t want to pay a premium for the latest technology.

2. Reasons to skip the Galaxy S23 Ultra

Frustrating curved edges on the display

Samsung’s curved screen on the Ultra models has always been a bit of a double-edged sword. While undeniably sleek and a hallmark of the premium line, functionality often took a backseat.

Galaxy S24 Ultra

Take the S Pen, for example. The curved display meant the pen would slip frustratingly close to the edge. Additionally, finding a screen protector that fully covers the display is another challenge, requiring extra care when handling the device.

Fortunately, Samsung has addressed these issues with the flat screen option on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This design offers improved S Pen usability and better screen protector compatibility. So if you prefer a flat screen for practical reasons, it might be worth considering the S24 Ultra over the S23 Ultra.

Software

We’ve already praised the Galaxy S23 Ultra for sporting the latest iteration of Samsung’s One UI skin yet. However, Samsung’s announcement about the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s software support might make you reconsider your choice.

The S24 Ultra boasts a staggering seven years of software support, including both platform updates and security patches. The S23 Ultra, on the other hand, is guaranteed four years of Android updates and five years of security fixes. In reality, considering it’s a generation older, it’s currently looking at three years of Android and four years of security.

For many high-end phone buyers, longevity is key. They want a device that will last for years, not something they need to replace every two years. If that sounds like you, the S24 Ultra’s extended software support plan is a major advantage and a strong reason to consider it over the S23 Ultra.

3. Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is still a powerful and versatile smartphone in 2024. Its stunning display, advanced camera system, and S Pen integration make it an attractive choice for power users and creative professionals.

However, be sure to consider the pros and cons carefully. While the newer S24 offers some practical improvements like a flat screen and extended software updates. But if those specific features aren’t dealbreakers for you, the S23 Ultra can still be a fantastic choice – especially if you can snag it at a discount.
