A few years back, Samsung was known for a poor update track record when compared to other Android OEMs. But thankfully, that’s not the case anymore. The company has not only promised three generations of Android updates to its flagships and mid-rangers but also at least four years of security updates for almost its entire lineup. Apart from longer support, it is now also faster in rolling out the builds. How fast you may ask? The answer is the firm has already started seeding the March 2021 security update to some of its devices when February is yet to end.

According to SamMobile, the South Korean tech giant has started rolling out the March 2021 security update to a total of four devices. These phones are Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy S21 series (Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra).

For the Galaxy A8 (2018), the latest security update for this handset is currently live in the UAE with firmware version A530FXXSICUC1. Whereas, the same update for the Galaxy S21 series is being seeded in Taiwan with firmware version G99x0ZHU1AUB7 weighing 387MB.

Users of these four handsets in the above-mentioned regions can head over to Settings > Software update > Download and install to check whether their phone has received the OTA release.

Anyway, it is worth noting that though the March 2021 update is live for the mentioned handsets in the respective regions, it may take time to reach every unit as it is being pushed in batches. Similarly, customers in other markets should also get this update in the coming days.

Samsung had officially unveiled the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) smartphones in the previous month. Both the smartphones were expected to arrive in the market by the start of this month. The Galaxy A8 (2018) is now available in Netherlands and very soon other European countries are expected to receive it.

On the official website for Netherlands, Samsung has listed the Galaxy A8 (2018) with a price tag of 499 euros (~$597). It comes in three colors like black, gray and gold. As of this writing, there is no confirmation on whether the European markets will be receiving the larger Galaxy A8+ (2018) smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) is packed with a 5.6-inch Super AMOLED Infinity display that supports 18.5:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution of 2220 x 1080 pixels. It is powered by Exynos 7885 chipset and 4 GB of RAM. It has a native storage of 32 GB. It is the first Samsung phone to come with dual front-facing cameras that include a 16-megapixel sensor and an 8-megapixel sensor. The back panel of the phone has a 16-megapixel snapper. It includes a 2,000mAh battery.

The Galaxy A8 (2018) is also up for buying in the home market of South Korea with a price tag of around ~$560. The larger A8+ (2018) is not yet available in the home country. In December 2017, Samsung had announced the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018). At that time, it was only revealed that the Galaxy A8 duo will go on sale starting from January 2018. According to a South Korean publication, Samsung will be selling the Galaxy A8 in partnership with mobile carrier KT Corp. starting from this week in the home country.

Samsung will start with the pre-orders of the Galaxy A8 (2018) from Tuesday. Its shipments are slated to begin on Friday. The publication has stated that the Galaxy A8 (2018) will be available with a price tag of 599,500 won (~$560) in South Korea. Depending on the carrier plans, users will be avail it with discounted pricing.

The report did not mention whether the larger Galaxy A8+ (2018) would be also arriving in South Korea. It is first phone from the company to come with dual front-facing cameras that features a 16-megapixel sensor and an 8-megapixel sensor.

The rear side of the phone is fitted with a 16-megapixel camera. Its 5.6-inch display supports 18.5:9 aspect ratio and screen resolution of 1080 x 2220 pixels. A press release by Samsung Vietnam has officially confirmed that the Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018) would be made available in Vietnam starting from Jan. 6. In Vietnam, the Galaxy A8 (2018) would be priced at around $485 and the larger Galaxy A8+ (2018) would be costing around $595. Both phones will be coming to the country in color choices like Black, Orchid Grey and Gold.

The press release highlights some of the best features that enrich the experience on the 2018 Galaxy A8 phones. Both phones also come with IP68 certified chassis and Always-on Display feature that are available on premium phones like Galaxy S8 and S8+. VDIS (video digital image stabilization) is a feature that stabilizes the camera footage and the Hyperlapse mode lets users to create time-lapse videos. The 2018 Galaxy A8 and A8+ are the first Galaxy A series phones to support Gear VR.

However, unlike the S8 phones, the A8 (2018) duo lack pressure-sensitive display area at the lower side of the screen that functions as a physical home button.

Since the pressure-sensitive home button is not available on the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) smartphones, these phones cannot be unlocked by long pressing on the home button. Hence, users will be able to unlock these phones by pressing the power button.

There is no official confirmation on why the company decided to axe the pressure-sensitive home button feature on the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018). After a series of leaks related to the Galaxy A8 and its bigger sibling Galaxy A8 Plus, Samsung has finally announced the Galaxy A8 and A8+. These smartphones are the successor of the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7.

The design of both the phones is quite similar to the company’s flagship smartphone — Galaxy S8. The devices also feature a similarly Infinity Display and dual front-facing cameras. Both smartphones come with IP68 ratings, making them water and dust resistant.

The Samsung Galaxy A8 sports a 5.6-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with screen resolution of 2220 x 1080 pixels, an unusual 18.5:9 aspect ratio and a curved glass on top. The phone packs 4GB RAM and comes in two models based on internal storage capacity — 32GB and 64GB.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy A8+ comes with a 6-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 2220 x 1080 pixels, curved glass and the same 18.5:9 aspect ratio. It is offered in two options — 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM as well as 32GB internal storage and 64GB onboard storage.

There is a microSD card slot present on both devices, allowing users to expand the storage capacity on the devices up to 256GB. Under the hood, both smartphones are powered by an octa-core processor with two cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six cores clocked at 1.6GHz.

Coming to the camera department, both smartphones feature a 16-megapixel camera sensor at the back with f/1.7 aperture and a Video Digital image stabilisation (VDis) technology. At the front, the devices sport a dual camera setup, with a 16-megapixel fixed focus sensor and an 8-megapixel secondary sensor for Bokeh effects. Both sensors come with f/1.9 aperture.

The devices are running Android 7.1 Nougat operating system along with the company’s own skin on top. Connectivity options on the devices include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, GPS / A-GPS, NFC, and USB Type-C port. The Galaxy A8 is fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery while the Galaxy A8+ packs a bigger 3,500mAh battery.

The SM-A530 and SM-A730 model numbers that have surfaced in recent rumors are speculated to debut as Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018) phones. A Chinese leakster has claimed on his Twitter account that SM-A530 and SM-A730 phones will not launch as 2018 versions of Galaxy A5 and A7. He is of the view that these smartphones may respectively launch as Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8 Plus (2018).

The upcoming Galaxy A8 phones are rumored to arrive as mid-range versions of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ flagships. They are expected to get unveiled by next month or in January 2018.

The 2018 models of the Samsung Galaxy A5 and A7 have already received FCC and Wi-Fi certifications. Hence, the 2018 Galaxy A smartphones are expected to launch soon either before the end of the year or early 2018. Plenty of details of both the smartphones have already surfaced in the past months. Today, fresh renders of Galaxy A5 (2018)’s case has surfaced to showcase its design.

The case renders show that the Galaxy A5 (2018) will be sporting an Infinity Display. Since it sports a full screen design, the fingerprint reader has been moved to the backside of the phone and it can be seen lying below the camera. Some rumors have claimed that it will be sporting dual selfie snappers. Since the entire front panel of the handset is not visible in the new photos, it cannot be confirmed whether it features dual front-facing cameras.

The Galaxy A7 (2018) is expected to sport the same design as the Galaxy A5 (2018). Hence, these phones are expected to arrive as smaller versions of the Galaxy S8 flagship phone. The Galaxy A7 (2018) is expected to arrive with a larger display than the Galaxy A5. Both smartphones are expected to feature a dedicated key for launching Bixby virtual assistant.

Rumors have it that the Exynos 7885 chipset will be powering the 2018 Galaxy A5 and A7 smartphones. Some markets are speculated to receive Snapdragon 660 chipset version of both phones. The A5 and A7 smartphones are speculated to respectively feature 4 GB and 6 GB of RAM. These phones are expected to arrive with Android 7.1.1 Nougat preinstalled.

Interestingly, a Chinese leakster had claimed in the previous week that Samsung may rebrand the upcoming Galaxy A5 and A7 smartphones as Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8 Plus (2018). Previous reports have revealed that the SM-A530 and SM-A730 model numbers respectively belong to 2018 Galaxy A5 and A7 phones. However, the leakster has also claimed through another tweet that these model numbers may belong to Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8 Plus (2018).

Hence, it seems that Samsung may debut upcoming Galaxy A (2018) phones as mid-range versions of Galaxy S8 and S8+.
