MediaTek is yet to announce the name of its first 5G processor which should appear in a number of devices soon. We know the processor will have the Helio M70 modem integrated into it. We also know it will come with Arm’s Cortex-A77 CPU cores and Mali-G77 GPU cores. Now, information has surfaced about another 5G modem from MediaTek but one that is less powerful and of course, cheaper.

The info comes from @Digital Chat Station, the same source that revealed a few days ago that Redmi is developing a phone that will come with MediaTek’s 5G processor. He revealed on Weibo that MediaTek has a second 5G SoC coming that will also feature the Helio M70 modem but will have the Cortex-A76 CPU cores instead of the more powerful A77 cores.

He adds that the processor will be a 7nm chip, supports SA and NSA networks, and will power devices priced around ¥2000 (~$284). A 5G phone priced under $300 should definitely sell like hot cakes. Since it features the same modem as the more powerful processor, you should get the same download speeds too.

There is no mention of when the processor will be announced neither did he reveal which manufacturers will be adopting it for their phones. We believe more information will surface as time goes on.

Soon after Qualcomm announced its latest flagship mobile chipset — Snapdragon 855 — with support for 5G connectivity, its rival MediaTek has now officially announced the MediaTek Helio M70 5G baseband chipset in China, which was first announced in Taiwan earlier this year.

The MediaTek Helio M70 is a multimode chipset with support for 2G/3G/4G/5G-enabled connectivity. It supports 5G radio (NR), along with the standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) network architectures, the sub-6GHz frequency band, high power user equipment (HPUE), and other key 5G technologies.

The company says that the chipset is designed in compliance with the 3GPP Rel-15 new specifications with 5 Gbps data rate, leading the industry to support carrier aggregation. TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek Wireless Communications Division, said:

MediaTek is committed to promoting the adoption of the latest technologies. With the commercialization of the first 5G baseband chipset, Helio M70, consumers will be able to enjoy the exciting 5G experience from a mature and complete solution. In the future, 5G and AI application areas will continue to grow, enhancing the connected experience for users in areas such as mobile phones or smart living.

The chipset aims to deliver an improved experience for customers and end users. For this, the MediaTek Helio M70 baseband chipset supports LTE and 5G dual connectivity (EN-DC) and ensures that the mobile devices are backward compatible with 4G/3G/2G in the absence of 5G networks.

According to MediaTek, the Helio M70 is able to design a 5G terminal device with a slim design advantage, helping manufacturers to design smaller, lower power mobile devices. MediaTek has announced that the Helio M70 baseband chipset is now available and is expected to ship in devices in the second half of 2019.

After Qualcomm, Intel, Huawei and Samsung, MediaTek has finally announced its own 5G baseband modem, the Helio M70. According to a Taiwanese publication, MediaTek will be shipping the Helio M70 in 2019.

The Helio M70 modem not only supports 5G NR, but also it meets the latest 3GPP Release 15 standard specification. The new SoC can reach a maximum download speed of 5 Gbps. The Taiwan-based chip maker has claimed that it has already co-operated with Nokia, NTT Docomo, China Mobile and Huawei to ensure that the new chip is ready in 2019.

The specifications of the Helio M70 are not known yet. However, the company has confirmed that the entire details of this new chip will be made available later in this month. It is speculated that the company will be ramping up the shipments of Helio M70 in 2020-2022. MediaTek has recently shifted its focus to mid-range and low-end markets. Hence, MediaTek SoC and Helio M70 powered affordable smartphones may release in the coming year.

In October 2017, Qualcomm had announced its Snapdragon X50 LTE modem. At that time, the company had claimed that it would be commercially available in the first half of 2019. However, a recent report reveals that the Qualcomm is putting full efforts to launch first 5G smartphones later this year.

The chipmaker had confirmed that it is working with several smartphone OEMs such Asus, Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Connected Technologies Limited, HMD Global (Nokia), HTC, Inseego/Novatel Wireless, LG, NetComm Wireless, NETGEAR, OPPO, Sharp Corporation, Sierra Wireless, Sony Mobile, Telit, vivo, Wingtech, WNC, Xiaomi and ZTE to release smartphones with Snapdragon X50 LTE modem.

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, Huawei had also claimed that it would be releasing its 5G smartphone in the second half of 2019. Even OPPO has claimed that it will be one of the first manufacturers to launch a 5G phone.
