Market Dynamics: Fluctuations and Growth in China’s Tablet Industry

Leading domestic brands such as Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo exhibited remarkable resilience, each reporting significant growth in shipments. This highlights the competitive landscape of the Chinese tablet market, where local manufacturers are increasingly asserting their presence.

Apple, however, maintained its lead with a 33.4% market share, followed by Huawei at 27.9%, and Xiaomi securing third place with an 11.4% share. Other notable players included Honor and Lenovo, with respective market shares of 7.8% and 6.2%.

The IDC report attributes this better-than-expected performance to two main factors. In the consumer market, major brands have been aggressively expanding their businesses through technological innovations and diversifying their product lines. This strategy has been instrumental in stabilizing and growing their market presence despite challenging conditions. In the commercial segment, the growth can be attributed to increased shipments in sectors such as government and education procurement, reflecting a broader recovery trend.

Another significant observation is the fluctuation in price distribution within the market. The share of tablets priced between 2,000 Yuan and 4,000 Yuan ($276-$552) has decreased, while those priced below 2,000 Yuan (<$276) have seen an increase in market share. This shift suggests a trend toward more budget-friendly options in the market, likely driven by the introduction of competitive products from mainstream manufacturers. The average unit price in the market has also declined by 3.0% compared to the previous quarter, settling at 2,793 Yuan (approximately $385).

In Q2 2023, the AR/VR headset industry experienced its fourth consecutive quarter of decline, with global shipments dropping by a substantial 44.6% compared to the previous year, according to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC).

The Decline in AR/VR Headset Shipments

The report also predicts that total shipments for 2023 will only slightly surpass those of 2017, reaching 8.5 million units, indicating a prolonged period of stagnation in the market. This decline can be attributed primarily to the global economic downturn, which has dampened consumer demand, as well as the increased price of the Meta Quest 2 and a lack of new product launches.

Meta continues to dominate the market with a 50.2% share, followed by Sony and Pico (owned by ByteDance) with 27.1% and 9.6%, respectively, both of which have seen their market share increase since Q2 of the previous year. XReal and DPVR (DaPeng VR) lag behind with marginal market shares just above 2%.

While the industry is currently in a subdued state, the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro AR/VR headset at this year’s Apple WWDC has generated significant excitement and speculation about a potential revival of the Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality headset market, although the sector still falls far short of its previous vibrancy.

In my opinion, the majority of AR/VR software is not yet suitable for everyday use by average consumers. But yes, businesses are increasingly realizing the value of AR/VR headsets for various purposes, including training, simulations, remote assistance, and augmented reality-based maintenance. These applications can boost efficiency, cut costs, and improve employee performance.

The introduction of innovative products like the Vision Pro from Apple offers a glimmer of hope for significant market transformation, possibly paving the way for a breakout in the coming year. However, the balance between new product releases and the right pricing will be crucial in shaping the trajectory of the AR/VR headset industry in the coming years.

According to an IDC projection, the worldwide shipments of used smartphones is expected to reach around 225.4 million units. This translates to a 9.2 percent rise in shipments, in comparison to 2019. Furthermore, IDC also predicts that the market will further rise in the arriving years and will reach 351.6 million units by 2024. The report also takes refurbished smartphones into account, along with used devices as well.

As per IDC, a big part of this growth is driven by the increase in popularity of trade ins. In other words, customers are more persuaded towards upgrading their smartphones to manage the cost of brand new handsets. Despite the market seeing growth, IDC believes that the figure is still lower than previous market expectations. Although, the used smartphone market still performed better than the new one, which IDC believes, saw a decline of 6.4 percent in the same period.

Anthony Scarsella, research manager at IDC stated that “In contrast to the recent declines in the new smartphone market, as well as the forecast for minimal growth in new shipments over the next few years, the used market for smartphones shows no signs of slowing down across all parts of the globe. Refurbished and used devices continue to provide cost-effective alternatives to both consumers and businesses that are looking to save money when purchasing a smartphone.”

The reason is likely related to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, with sales mainly being dominated by the staple industry names like Xiaomi, Alibaba, and Baidu.

This news was revealed through a recent IDC report (a known analytics firm), which stated that 10.56 million smart speakers were shipped in China in Q1 2020. This marks a noticeable year on year decline of 14.7 percent over 2019. According to IDC, the primary reason for such a shipment shrink is mainly due to the Coronavirus outbreak in the region, which caused many offline physical stores to be shut down.

These stores have since opened up gradually, especially with restrictions being eased in late March and April. Within the trio, Alibaba claimed the top position in the market, securing 3.71 million Tmall Genie smart speakers during this period. This gave it a market share of 35.2 percent. Furthermore, the company is also planning on investing heavily in the development of artificial intelligence powered smart speakers to help it retain its current dominance.

Baidu arrived second with a market share of 30.9 percent and Xiaomi at the third spot with a close 30.4 percent market share. In other words, these three brands alone captured nearly 96 percent of the entire Chinese smart speaker market. The former has its success attributed to the touch screen speakers that it produces while the latter is another known brand with its various offerings ranging in price within this segment.

IDC is known for providing data statistics for various different categories in various different industries. In its recent report, it details the market share of smartphone OEMs. According to the data provided, Realme’s shipments peaked in September which is around the festive month. The company saw a market share of 16.74 percent which has since declined to 9.33 percent in October and 8.23 percent in November.

Overall Market Share via IDC

Upasana Joshi, Associate Research Manager at IDC, stated that the bulk of the purchases of Realme smartphones were from online e-retailing platforms especially during the festive month. Realme has a focus on being an online focused brand with over 80 percent of all sales originating from the internet. The company saw a rise up to September which was its peak, before falling in the following months.

On the other hand, Xiaomi in the same time frame launched its much anticipated Redmi Note 8 series through its subsidiary brand. This was soon followed by price cuts for other handsets and more attractive offerings during the festive season which helped the brand. Unlike Realme, Xiaomi also markets its products through offline channels as well, including official stores and authorized sellers. Furthermore, a Xiaomi spokesperson also mentioned that the final quarter of 2019 was successful for the company, which saw over one million Redmi Note 8 units being sold in India within just a month.

Samsung too saw a similar slight increase in market share like Xiaomi. The South Korean tech giant went from a 16.19 percent market share in September to 19.85 percent in October and 21.08 percent in November, during 2019. Notably, its online market share saw a sizable rise as well, from 10.3 percent in September to 18.77 percent in November. Reportedly, the launch of the Galaxy M30 was accredited for Samsung’s growth in the online category.

This sizable number includes used smartphones and also officially refurbished one.

The number is also a notable growth of 17.6 percent from 2018, which had seen 175.8 million smartphone units being shipped worldwide. Similarly, IDC has predicted that the number will grow even more in the near future, with a predicted forecast of 332.9 million units in 2023 going by an annual growth rate of 13.6 percent starting from 2018.

The used smartphone market is seeing rapid growth and growing market prospects despite its declining market popularity over the past. Furthermore, a research manager with IDC stated that “the used market for smartphone shows no signs of slowing down across all parts of the globe” while the shipment for new smartphones is predicted to see “minimal growth over the next few years.”

Editor’s Pick: Samsung has invested $500 million to set up a smartphone display plant in India

IDC has credited the major contributing factor of the growth of used smartphones to financial factors. Generally, used and refurbished handsets are more cost-effective and a viable alternative to both consumers and businesses over recently released offerings. This even extends to OEMs not maintaining a balance of features to pricing.

In recent times, no big breakthroughs in processing and features have been achieved. In other words, the price of the newer smartphones has been on the rise while the number of worthwhile features and notable performance improvements have been fewer. For example, an in-display fingerprint scanner and a punch-hole camera are quite convenient in providing a more content friendly viewing experience but offer no new functionality over conventional rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and a teardrop notch.

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G

Lastly, IDC mentioned that the wider adoption of 5G network across different regions is expected to impact the used smartphones as well. Meaning, People would seek out refurbished 5G handsets over their older 4G devices to gain access to the newer and faster bandwidth.

But according to a new report, the speculated market forecast shows that it could show a growth of 0.7 percent in 2020 thanks to the emerging 5G smartphone market.

Multiple reports have so far suggested that 5G handsets will be more affordable next year. These devices will be the catalysts that recover the declining Chinese smartphone market growth. Reportedly, more than 20 percent of 5G devices that will be available in 2020 will be sold for less than 2,000 Yuan or roughly 285 US Dollars, according to IDC (International Data Corporation).

The newer and faster networking bandwidth is said to bring a positive effect on the entire smartphone industry, according to Wang Xi, an IDC China research manager that specializes in the Chinese smartphone market. Furthermore, the IDC reported that 5G smartphones will see an increase in shipments next year and will account for about 14 percent of total mobile shipments globally. This far exceeds the 1.3 percent share that 4G smartphones had in 2010 when the bandwidth was then introduced.

Many nations, especially developed countries like the US, China, and other European regions, are currently in a race to integrate 5G networks; for reasons that include, but are not limited to, faster data rates, reduced latency, energy efficiency, and massive device connectivity. China is expected to be at the forefront of this advancement towards 5G services with an estimated 5G userbase of a massive 600 million people by 2025.

Huawei is Chinas most valuable technology brand, and sells more telecommunications equipment than any other company in the world, with annual revenue topping $100 billion U.S. Headquartered in the southern city of Shenzhen, considered Chinas Silicon Valley, Huawei has more than 180,000 employees worldwide, with nearly half of them engaged in research and development. In 2018, the company overtook Apple Inc. as the second largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world behind Samsung Electronics, a milestone that has made Huawei a source of national pride in China.
While commercially successful and a dominant player in 5G, or fifth-generation networking technology, Huawei has faced political headwinds and allegations that its equipment includes so-called backdoors that the U.S. government perceives as a national security. U.S. authorities are also seeking the extradition of Huaweis Chief Financial Officer, Meng Wanzhou, to stand trial in the U.S. on fraud charges. Meng is currently under house arrest in Canada, though Huawei maintains the U.S. case against her is purely political. Despite the U.S. campaign against the company, Huawei is determined to lead the global charge toward adopting 5G wireless networks. It has hired experts from foreign rivals, and invested heavily in R&D to patent key technologies to boost Chinese influence. (Photo by Kevin Frayer/Getty Images)

Additionally, Chinese telecoms like Huawei are one of the leaders in supplying 5G infrastructure. Although the company is currently facing numerous setbacks in western regions like the US and Europe, it still is ahead of other companies in terms of 5G networking.

It is estimated that China has over 800 million internet users that access videos, movies, play games and much more via 4G smartphones. Thus the nation can be accurately summarized as having one of the biggest potentials in 5G growth.

The firm attributes this surge to one particular subcategory that had the highest impact which is the “hearables” market.

In the report, the wearables industry saw a significant growth of 94.6 percent in the third quarter of 2019 compared to 2018’s third quarter. The “hearables” category, that includes wireless earphones, headphones and more of the sort, had a major impact in the industry. The report accredited this major popularity rise to Apple with its AirPods.

Since its release, the AirPods have created a massive trend that saw many companies produce either look-alikes or similarly functioning audio gadgets. Currently, the Cupertino-based company is the world leader in terms of market share in the wearables category with 29.5 million units being shipped in Q3 2019 in comparison to just 10 million units in Q3 2018. This showcases a notable growth of 195.5 percent and a total market share of 35 percent this quarter thanks to its strong AirPods sales and popularity.

Editor’s Pick: OnePlus is reportedly developing a True Wireless Earphones to rival AirPods and Galaxy Buds

Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant, arrives second with a 14.6 percent total market share. Furthermore, the company saw a sizeable growth of 66.1 percent from Q3 2018 to Q3 2019. On the other hand, Samsung took spot number three with a 9.8 percent market share owing to 8.3 million units being shipped in this quarter in comparison to 3.2 million in Q3 2018. Huawei arrives behind Samsung with a big leap of 7.1 million units being shipped over 2.3 million over last year’s third quarter, taking 8.4 percent of the total market share.

The report also offers a breakdown of exact wearables subcategories to indicate growth. Thus, we see earwear (earphones and headphones) seeing massive growth. With a total of 40.7 million units shipped over last years 11.8 million, earwear alone sees a Year-on-Year growth of a whopping 242.4 percent.

Wearables Subcategory Market Share (Courtesy: IDC)

Other categories like wristbands and smartwatches saw a YoY growth as well but were nowhere near the “hearables” subcategory. And with more and more smartphone OEMs moving away from the 3.5mm headphone jack, the industry is expected to continue rising at a strong pace.

For the first time ever in a quarter, India accounts for 10 percent of the global smartphone shipments. Also, Xiaomi now possesses the same market share as Samsung in the country.

More than 80 million smartphone shipments were recorded in Q3 2017. IDC claims that there has been rise of 40 percent in smartphone shipments in comparison to the previous quarter. When compared to Q3 2016, the smartphone shipments have grown by 21 percent.

When it comes to top five smartphone vendors in India, Samsung and Xiaomi are now tied at first position with each having a market share of 23.5 percent. The research firm adds that it is because of the aggressive pricing strategy that Xiaomi has adopted, it has managed to sell plenty of devices online.

By shipping 4 million units in Q3 2017, the Redmi Note 4 remains as the best-selling smartphone in the country. Also, the shipments of Xiaomi devices have increased by twofold as the company is also generating revenue through offline partners and Mi stores. A recent report by Counterpoint has cited that the Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4 and Redmi 4A are the three top selling smartphones in India in Q3 this year.

Samsung that has a market share of 23.5 in India attained 39 percent sequential growth QoQ and 23 percent YoY. The top selling smartphones for Samsung in Q3 2017 are Galaxy J2, Galaxy J7 Nxt and Galaxy J7 Max.

Lenovo (including Motorola) has regained the third sport after two quarters. In comparison to Q2 2017, the Chinese firm has managed to increase its third quarter shipments by 83 percent. In Q3 2017, it held a market share of 9 percent.

Vivo had an impressive second quarter this year, but since its shipments have decreased it has now slipped to fourth position with a market share of 8.5 percent. With the arrival of new smartphones like Vivo V7+ and Vivo Y69, the company is now regaining lost ground since September.

In Q317, OPPO had its biggest sell-in quarter in the country as shipments grew by 40 percent sequentially and 81 percent in comparison to Q3 2016. It held a market share of 7.9 percent.

The growth in shipment has been attributed to a number of factors such as the festive holidays, online mega sales, and early importation of phones due to Chinese holidays in September (Mid-Autumn Festival) and October (National Day).

IDC puts the total number of shipments for the quarter at about 72.3 million (smartphone and feature phones) which translates to a growth of 18.1 percent.

The big winners for the quarter are Samsung with 23%; Lenovo (and Motorola) with 9.6%; Micromax with 7.5%; Xiaomi with 7.4%; and Reliance Jio with 7% of the total shipment

According to the report, Xiaomi’s shipment has grown over 2.5 times compared to the same period last year and may continue to do so due to its plan to expand its offline channels.

READ MORE: Xiaomi India Sells Half a Million Smartphones in 72 Hours During Festive Sales

The surprising part of the report is the large amount of feature phones still being bought. Feature phones shipped in the quarter were over 39 million. IDC says the migration from feature phones to smartphones have slowed and this is helping Indian-based vendors maintain dominance in the overall mobile market.

This is an increase from last quarter’s 45%.

So how did these companies achieve their success? The IDC has narrowed it to three major things:

Strong offline sales

Oppo and Vivo’s strong offline sales is as a result of their shops and advertisements occupying most of the cites that fall within the Tier 3 (e.g. Hangzhou) to Tier 5 categories and making it easy for people living in these cities to access after sales service. For the bigger cities (Tier 1 and 2), they focused on sponsoring major entertainment shows to win over customers.

Focused marketing on key technologies

The top 2 brands for the second quarter, Huawei and OPPO had products that had key technologies which were the focus of their marketing campaigns. The Huawei P9’s marketing campaign focused on the dual camera technology and emphasised on the partnership with German optics manufacturer, Leica. OPPO on the other hand marketed their fast charge technology and camera prowess of the camera-centric OPPO R9 which is one of their best selling phones till date.

Celebrity Endorsements/Brand Ambassadors

Celebrity endorsements isn’t a new trick in the art of marketing but some companies still don’t use it. OPPO hired popular Bollywood stars Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor as its brand ambassadors for the R9. Vivo initially hired Korean actor, Song Joong Ki as the Vivo X7 ambassador but have dropped him a few days ago. Huawei has also hired a brand ambassador for its Honor line. Even brands like Xiaomi that have been known not to spend on advertising have hired three ambassadors for the Redmi series.

RELATED: Xiaomi’s Q2 2016 Shipments Down by 38% in China

While Huawei OPPO, and Vivo had a great second quarter, Apple and Xiaomi suffered a decline. Apple’s latest device, the iPhone SE was not well received in China. Things may turn around when the new iPhones launch next month. Xiaomi on the other hand which could be termed the king of online sales have now realised the importance of offline sales as well and have started putting up stores in cities.
