Xiaomi has not announced that it will be attending the mobile event in Germany and since the tweet ends with the hashtag #XiaomiGlobalLaunch, it makes us wonder if this is a late IFA announcement.

Not much is known about the device other than it having dual cameras. The teaser image shows two circles of different sizes hinting at the configuration of the cameras i.e. one wide-angle lens and another telephoto lens, just like the Mi 6.

Xiaomi may not have let the cat out of the bag about the device it is announcing, but our guess is that it is the Mi MIX 2. The second generation Mi MIX has been in the news lately. We have seen leaks of the device as well as teases, and a few days ago we saw an image that showed the shooting of a commercial for the phone.

So why a global launch this time? The Mi MIX was an unexpected surprise last year when it was announced at the Mi Note 2 launch. It received many reviews across the globe even though it didn’t have a global variant like the Mi Note 2. Seeing the kind of reception it received, it will be stupid for Xiaomi not to launch the second variant globally.

The Mi MIX 2 will push the bezel-less boundaries further than its predecessor. And with dual cameras, it seems set for another round of positive reviews.

The release of the Mi MIX 2 also means that Xiaomi will be competing with the newly announced Galaxy Note8 and the LG V30 that will be launched on Thursday. While the Mi MIX 2 won’t have a stylus, what it does have going for it will be its affordable price tag.

If you had to choose from the Mi MIX 2, the Galaxy Note8 and the LG V30, which smartphone gets your money?

A few days ago, there was a leak that revealed some of the phones expected to be showcased at the event. One of them is the Alcatel A7 XL, a 6-inch phablet with dual rear cameras. A smaller version called the Alcatel A7 has been seen on GFXBench.

The Alcatel A7 was actually benchmarked as the Alcatel 5090. Unlike the A7 XL which has a larger HD screen, this comes with a 5.5-inch full HD screen. Geekbench shows two RAM variants: a 3GB version and a 4GB version. Built-in storage is 32GB.

The Alcatel A7 is powered by a MT6750T, an octa-core chip clocked at 1.5GHz. It has a 16MP rear camera, an 8MP front facing camera and runs Android 7.0 Nougat with Alcatel’s own UI overlay.

Popular leaker Roland Quandt has provided images of the device which reveal more details. The phone comes in black with gold accents in certain places.

There is a front LED flash for brighter selfies and it also has dual front facing speakers. The latter isn’t something you usually see on a mid-range device. There is a volume rocker on the right, just above a textured power button. No image of the rear was provided but Roland Quandt said he believes it has dual cameras.

The Alcatel A7 will reportedly sell for €250 (∼$295) but he didn’t specify if that is for the 3GB RAM variant or the 4GB RAM model.

One of them is the Alcatel U5, and less than a week to IFA Berlin 2017, it gets an upgrade. The Alcatel U5 HD brings improved features in key areas.

The 5-inch display now has a 1280 x 720 resolution, up from 845 x 480. The cameras have also been upgraded. The rear camera is an 8MP sensor (interpolated to 13MP) with a LED flash. The front camera is 5MP (interpolated to 8MP) with EIS, HDR and its own LED flash. Compared to the 5MP and 2MP sensors respectively on the U5, these should take better pictures. The Alcatel U5 HD also sports a slightly bigger 2200mAh battery and comes with Android Nougat.

The rest of the features remain the same. There is still 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. There is a MicroSD card slot that can take a max. capacity of 128GB and a dual SIM slot. The processor is the MediaTek MT6737 clocked at 1.1GHz.

The design of the phone doesn’t seem to have changed. The back is textured to allow for a firmer grip, and the device uses backlit capacitive keys. There is a microUSB port at the bottom and an audio jack at the top. It comes in Volcano Black and Pure White.

The Alcatel U5 HD will be showcased at IFA Berlin. There is no price yet neither is there a date for when it will be available for purchase. There are also rumors that the Alcatel A3, another device launched at MWC 2017 with better specs may also get an upgrade.

However, a number of manufacturers have launch events or keynote addresses scheduled a day or two ahead of the official opening day. One of them is electronics giant, Lenovo and they have released a teaser video of what we should expect.

The 51-seconds long video includes a wide variety of products, though most of them have already been released. First we see the Lenovo Yoga Tablet with its halo keyboard coming on. Then the Tango-based Phab 2 Pro makes an appearance.

The Moto Z2 Play is also spotted along with a Hasselblad camera mod, and the Moto Z2 Force with the 360° camera mod. If you are a gamer, you may want to visit Lenovo’s booth and check out their Y-series gaming laptop as one makes an appearance in the video.

At the 20-second mark, what appears to be a smart speaker can be seen. Although, Lenovo announced an Alexa-powered speaker early this year at CES, which is still not available for purchase yet by the way, this speaker has a different design. It also appears to have a display. Our guess is that this is Lenovo’s version of the Amazon Echo Show and we will have a first look at IFA Berlin.

The product we are most excited to see is the Star Wars AR headset made in partnership with Disney. When it was announced at the D23 event last month, very few details were released. Now that Lenovo has teased it in its IFA video, we may see it in action and get answers to our unanswered questions. Another pair of VR glasses is also seen in the video.

There is no new phone in the video, so don’t get your hopes high about a new smartphone launching.
