A new report has suggested that the new Mate 40 series model will feature 5G networking and could be the sixth entry in the family.

The Chinese tech giant had recently obtained a network access license from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This license was for a new smartphone with a model number of “NOH-AN50,” which hints that it belongs to the Mate 40 flagship family. It was initially assumed to be a new Mate 40 Pro model that could’ve been branded as a Collector’s Edition and feature the Kirin 9000 5G chipset. But now, tipster @魔法科技君 believes that the upcoming handset in question is the Mate 40E Pro that will be powered by a Kirin 990 5G SoC.

For those unaware, the company had previously launched the Mate 40E in a 4G and 5G variant. Now, it is apparently gearing up to launch a new Pro variant as well that supports 5G networking. While the Mate 40E had featured a Kirin 990E processor, the Pro variant will supposedly sport the Kirin 990 5G. However, it seems odd that the brand plans to release a new smartphone that features a dated flagship processor that was announced back in 2019.

In other words, Huawei might have reserves of its Kirin 9000 series running low or they could possibly even be completely dry. This means that any future smartphones from the brand might likely be unable to feature its latest and greatest chipset. Previous estimates had indicated that the company had managed to acquire just 10 million units of Kirin 9000 chips before US sanctions cut off the company from its primary chip supplier TSMC. Although, this is still just an unconfirmed report, so take it with a pinch of salt for now.

The Kirin 990E 5G is a mix of the Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G. It is a 7nm+ EUV processor that has the same CPU configuration and clock speeds as the Kirin 990 5G. However, its GPU is less powerful than that of the Kirin 990 5G and Kirin 990. It also shares the same NPU as the Kirin 990 and has a 5G modem.

The table below should make it easier to understand the differences between the three processors.

Kirin 990 versus Kirin 990E 5G versus Kirin 990 5G

As you can see, the new Kirin 990E 5G processor offers the same CPU performance as the Kirin 990 5G. However, its GPU is not as powerful as that of the Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G.

Huawei also seems to have slightly upgraded the modem of the Kirin 990E 5G as it supports all frequencies of the three main domestic operators in China with the exception of China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA 3G band which the Kirin 990 5G also doesn’t support.

The Kirin 990E 5G is a result of Huawei tweaking its existing chipsets. It is a smart move based on its current predicament and we expect it to power more devices in the future.

Both phones have also been certified by China’s TENAA authority. However, their specs haven’t appeared yet on TENAA. These phones are slated to go official on March 26. Ahead of the launch, the Huawei P40 Pro has appeared on Geekbench with some key specs.

The Huawei ELS-NX9 smartphone that has been spotted on Geekbench 5 seems to be a different country variant of the Huawei P40 Pro. The handset scored 776 in the single-core test of Geekbench 5. It recorded a scored of 3182 in the multi-core test.

The handset is powered by HiSilicon Kirin chipset that has a base frequency of 1.95GHz. It seems to be the Kirin 990 5G chipset. It is the same SoC that fueled the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G smartphone that was made official in the last quarter of 2019.

The Huawei P40 Pro’s Geekbench listing further reveals that it is equipped with 8 GB of RAM. The phone is running on Android 10 OS. The P40 series models may not arrive with Google Mobile Services (GMS). Instead, the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) could be onboard along with the company’s own AppGallery. Hopefully, the entire specifications of the Huawei P40 series will appear on TENAA in the near future.

Recently, a notable tipster had revealed that the Huawei P40 will be available in Europe for around 799 euros (~$890) and 899 euros (~$1,000). It is yet to be confirmed whether it is a Huawei or Honor smartphone. Apart from bagging 3C certification, multiple variants of the device were previously spotted at the database of Bluetooth SIG regulatory body few weeks ago.

The EBG-AN00 / AN10 is a 5G phone that has been certified with HW-100400C01 that supports 40W fast charging. It is the same charger that the Chinese firm will be shipping with the Huawei P40 series that is slated to go official on March 26.

Some reports have claimed that the codenames of the Honor 30 phones are based on the universities of the U.K. The model number of last year’s Honor V30 was OXF-AN00. It is said that “OXF” is based on the name of Oxford University.

Yesterday, the alleged Honor 30 phone with model number BMH-AN10 was approved by 3C authority in China. The 5G phone is also expected to arrive with a 40W fast charger. It is speculated that it could be the Honor 30 5G phone and the “BHM” text could be based on the name of Birmingham University. Also, the newly found EBG-AN00 / AN10 could be based on Edinburgh University. It is advisable to wait for further reports to know whether BHM-XXXX and EBG-XXXX will really end up as Honor 30 series phones.

Last year’s Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro were shipped with 22.5W fast charger. On the other hand, the Honor 30 and 30 Pro may arrive with 40W fast charging support. Rumors have it that the Honor 30 series will break cover at some time in April to rival with OnePlus 8 series that is speculated to launch in the second week of the same month.

A product page of the Mate Xs has appeared on Jingdong Mall (JD.com). The device is now up for reservations on China’s retailer site.
Huawei had introduced its first phone with a folding screen, the Huawei Mate X at 2019 Mobile World Congress (MWC) tech exhibition. The successor phone i.e. the Mate Xs has debuted with a more powerful chipset and improved design. JD.com seems to have bagged the first online test right for Mate Xs this time.

Huawei Mate Xs specifications and features

The Huawei Mate Xs that is priced at 2,499 euros comes with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of onboard storage. The processor has been upgraded from a Kirin 980 to Kirin 990 that confers it an integrated 5G modem. It runs on EMUI 10 based on the open-source version of Android 10 but would use its own ecosystem called HMS (Huawei Mobile services). The device lacks support for GMS (Google Mobile Services).

The Mate Xs arrives with a quad-layer construction for its screen, a more robust design over its predecessor Mate X. This includes two opposed layers of polyamide film above a flexible OLED display. A softer polymer layer below this would offer a cushioning effect and a final layer below this will connect to the main body of the phone. Huawei has also worked on the design of the hinge to make it more smoother and durable as compared to Mate X. The Mate Xs promises to allow use of three apps at once, one on the left side of the display, one on the right, and a third in a floating window. Additionally, it will allow for simultaneously opening two instances of the same app.

With an 8-inch screen that folds from the outside and a main display that measures 6.6 inches, other features of the phone seem to match that of the original Mate X. The Mate X was fueled by the Kirin 980 chipset. The forthcoming Huawei Mate Xs will be driven by the Kirin 990 5G chipset. In December, the Mate Xs that has a model number of TAH-AN00m had bagged 3C certification in China. With the launch drawing near, the new foldable phone has surfaced on the database of TENAA.

The screenshot reveals that the Huawei Mate Xs shows that it is a 5G device that carries support for NSA and SA 5G network in China. The TENAA listing of the phone is yet to populated with its full specs and images. Hopefully, the Huawei Mate Xs TENAA listing will be updated soon with its specs and images.

The 3C appearance of the phone in December had revealed that it could be with a 65W fast charger. Huawei Consumer Group CEO Yu Chengdong had recently in an interview that the Huawei Mate Xs will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2020 tech trade show that will be held in between Feb. 24 and Feb. 27.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei executive says $150 5G phones will launch by the end of this year

The Huawei Mate X was priced at 16,999 Yuan (~$2,476). Rumors surrounding the upcoming Mate Xs have revealed that the Mate Xs could be a cheaper device despite coming with improvements in display and design. The device will be equipped with an upgraded hinge system and a newer Kirin 990 5G processor. Since the Mate Xs is less difficult to manufacture compared to its predecessor, it is likely that the Mate Xs could be coming with a cheaper price tag.

As far as the hinge of Huawei Mate Xs is concerned, it is more durable and fine tuned compared to the hinge on the Mate X. The display size will remain intact as the predecessor model. With design improvements, the Mate Xs will be slightly smaller than the previous model.

In related news, Huawei is reportedly working on another smartphone with foldable screen. It is likely to go official in the second half of 2020. It remains to be seen whether it arrives with clamshell form factor like the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip or it features a tri-fold design like the rumored Galaxy Z phone.

The Huawei P40 series is expected to break cover by Q1 2020. A fresh leak has revealed the key specifications of the Huawei P40 Pro. The leak also states that the phone could be backed by a 5,500mAh graphene battery and it may arrive with 50W fast charging technology.

According to the leak, the volume of the 5,500mAh graphene battery that will be powering the Huawei P40 Pro will be only 70 percent of that of lithium batteries. The graphene battery could be coupled with the newly developed 50W rapid charging technology from Huawei which will take only 45 minutes to charge it completely.

The leak has further revealed that the Huawei P40 Pro will be coming with a 6.5-inch waterfall display. The OLED screen will support quad HD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It may offer a high screen-to-body ratio of around 98 percent. The display of the phone may bear a pill-shaped cutout for dual selfie snappers.

The rear cameras may support 4K video recording.

The P40 Pro may come with main sensor + ultrawide lens dual selfie camera system like the Huawei Nova 6 5G phone. The leak states that the Huawei P40 series will run on Android 10 customized with EMUI 10 skin.

The leak has no information on the launch date and pricing of the Huawei P40 series. Readers are advised to digest the above report with a grain of salt. The P30 series were made official in March this year. Hence, the P40 and P40 Pro may break cover around the same time next year. A recent report had revealed that Huawei will be selling the Huawei P40 series in the global markets.

From the interview of Honor president Zhao Ming, it seems that the company is very confident about the success of Kirin 990 chipset.

He has claimed that every 5G chipset available in the market, except for the Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 990, is a low-end one. He says that it’s very difficult to make a good 5G chipset and their SoC has passed Level-6 tests while other have not even passed Level-4.

Zhao Ming also says that there’s a big different in propaganda and experience claiming that all the other chipset makers are just spending a lot on marketing and not the actual technology, which can be reflected in the sales numbers.

Announced in September this year, the Kirin 990 SoC is built with a 7nm extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) process. Huawei says its new integrated chip is smaller than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 + X50 5G modem, allowing for more compact 5G smartphones. It is also claimed to be the world’s first mobile SoC with more than 10 billion transistors, making it more efficient with power consumption.

The highlight of the SoC is that it’s also the first full-frequency 5G SoC — it’ll support both non-standalone and standalone architectures as well as TDD/FDD full frequency bands. The Kirin 990 is a true unified design, supporting Sub-6 GHz 5G networks on both SA and NSA architectures, making it the first to do so.

Aside from implementing the 5G modem, another biggest change in the Kirin 990 is the NPU, or Neural Processing Unit. It is basically a co-processor optimized for the sort of vector math which is the lifeblood of machine learning frameworks like Facebook’s Caffe2 and Google’s TensorFlow.

The chipset uses two big, two middle and four little cores to optimize multitasking, with clock speeds of 2.86GHz, 2.36GHz and 1.95GHz respectively. The 990 5G also packs a 16-core Mali G76 graphics processor for mobile gaming, as well as smart cache built-in to reduce bandwidth by up to 15 percent.

It is not only the first tablet with a punch-hole display but it is also the first tablet with support for reverse wireless charging. No, it is not the first tablet with wireless charging, the Nexus 7 (2013) supports wireless charging too.

The new tablet is powered by the Kirin 990 processor but a more powerful version will arrive next year. Huawei’s CEO, Yu Chengdong, disclosed at the launch that the MatePad Pro will get a 5G version next year. That version should be powered by the Kirin 990 5G which not only has a built-in 5G modem but has its cores clocked at a higher speed.

The MatePad Pro 5G version will launch in the first quarter of 2020. Based on the timeline, the device may arrive alongside the Huawei P40 series.

Other than the difference in the processor and network (5G support), we expect the MatePad Pro 5G to have a bigger battery capacity. The MatePad Pro has a 7250mAh battery capacity, slightly smaller than the 7500mAh battery of the MediaPad 10.8. We presume Huawei will include a 7500mAh battery in the 5G version of its new tablet. And of course, expect a higher price tag.

Ahead of the launch, the Chinese manufacturer has started with the reservations of the Honor V30 series. The official Vmall online store along with other e-commerce sites like Jingdong Mall and Tmall are now receiving the registrations of the Honor V30.

In the past few weeks, plenty of details on the Honor V30 series have appeared, but none of them seem to be very accurate. The series is expected to include Honor V30 and Honor V30 Pro smartphones. It is speculated that there could be a special Honor V30 Aston Martin edition in China. In the Europe, the series could be called Honor Vera 30.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei Mate X being resold at up to 60,000 yuan via third party websites due to lack of supply

The Honor V30 could be a non-5G phone fueled by Kirin 990 chipset whereas the Honor V30 Pro could be the company’s first 5G phone driven by the Kirin 990 5G chipset. The handset will be supporting both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) 5G modes. The Honor V30 may include a 4,000mAh battery with 40W fast charging. The Pro model may house a 4,200Ah battery along with 40W rapid charging and it also carry support for wireless charging.

The Honor V30 Pro could be coming with dual front-facing cameras housed inside a pill-shaped camera module. On the other side, the Honor V30 could be also featuring a punch-hole display with a single front camera. It remains to be seen whether both phones are equipped with side-mounted fingerprint scanners. The predecessor Honor 20 and 20 Pro phones had featured side-facing fingerprint readers.

As far photography is concerned, the Honor V30 and V30 Pro may feature a rectangle-shaped camera module. The V30 could be fitted three rear-mounted cameras whereas the V30 Pro could be decked with four rear-mounted cameras. Both phones are rumored to be equipped with 60-megapixel main cameras on their rear. The Honor V30 series will come with new “Camera Matrix” algorithm that will make it possible to capture better photography experience.

Hopefully, the Honor V30 and V30 Pro phones will soon appear on TENAA with their full specifications. On Nov. 26, the Chinese is also expected to unleash other products including Kirin 810 powered Honor Tab 6 alongside the V30 series of phones.

The official Huawei Weibo account is still yet to confirm that info, and seeing that the day is almost here with no official confirmation, the possibility of the device launching on Wednesday is getting slimmer. Nevertheless, the alleged prices of the Mate X have leaked today.

The info comes from Huawei Central, one of the sources that reported it will launch on Wednesday. The Mate X will have two versions – a base model with a Kirin 980 model + Balong 5000 5G modem and a high-end model with a Kirin 990 5G chipset.

The Kirin 980 model will have a price tag of ¥9999 (~$1414) while the Kirin 990 5G version will sell for ¥13,999 (~$1979). The price of both models is significantly cheaper when compared to the launch price of €2299 (~$2563) announced in Europe back in February, which of course is for the Kirin 980 version.

The Mate X has 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. We don’t know if the Kirin 990 5G version will have the same configuration or differ in other ways but ¥4000 (~$565) is a lot if the difference is limited to only the chipset.

According to the source, the Honor V30 will indeed have a punch-hole LCD display while the V30 Pro will have an OLED display with a larger punch hole for dual cameras. The source says both phones are powered by the Kirin 990 5G.

Unlike the previous leak which said the Honor V30 has triple rear cameras, this new leak says the phone actually has a quad-camera setup on the back just like the Honor V30 Pro. However, the camera configuration is different for both phones.

The Honor V30 will have a 60MP primary camera paired with a 16MP super wide-angle lens, a 2MP 2.4 cm macro lens, and a ToF camera. Inside the hole in its screen is a 32MP selfie camera.

The Honor V30 Pro will also have a 60MP main rear camera but a 20MP super wide-angle lens, an 8MP telephoto lens, and a ToF camera. The main selfie camera is also a 32MP sensor but the configuration of the second camera is unknown.

The Honor V30 will draw power from a 4000mAh battery with support for 22.5W fast charging while the V30 Pro will have a 4200mAh battery with support for 40W fast charge and 15W wireless fast charge.

The source reports that the Honor V30 series will have a price tag not more than ¥3000 (~$420) and both phones are expected to be announced by the end of October.

It will be debuting as Honor’s first 5G smartphone. Parent company Huawei will be debuting the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro smartphones next week. Fresh rumors claim that the display of the Mate 30 Pro won’t be supporting 90Hz refresh rate. It may offer regular refresh rate of 60Hz. However, the Vera30 arriving later this year could be equipped with a 90Hz display.

Various smartphone manufacturers from China are gearing up to launch phones with 90Hz displays. as it offers smoother visual experience while gaming, watching movies and regular usage. The OnePlus 7 Pro that went official came with a 90Hz display. The OPPO Ace flagship phone arriving next month is also expected to sport a 90Hz screen. The upcoming Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 is also speculated to come with a display that offers 90Hz refresh rate.

The Honor V30 will be arriving as the successor for the Honor V20 phone from last year. The Honor V20 supported 64-bit games at 60fps. Hence, the Honor V30 with its 90Hz refresh rate and powerful Kirin 990 5G chipset will offer better overall display experience.

The Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G is a 7nm octa-core chipset that has 10.3 billion transistors. It uses two big, two middle and four little cores to optimize multitasking, with clock speeds of 2.86GHz, 2.36GHz and 1.95GHz respectively. The 990 5G also packs a 16-core Mali G76 graphics processor which should offer plenty of power for mobile gaming, as well as smart cache built in to reduce bandwidth by up to 15 percent.

It is also touted to be the first full-frequency 5G SoC — with support both non-standalone and standalone architectures as well as TDD/FDD full frequency bands. The Kirin 990 is a true unified design, supporting Sub-6 GHz 5G networks on both SA and NSA architectures.

For photography, it has a new fifth-generation Dual ISP boasts DSLR-level hardware noise reduction and block-matching and 3D filtering. Huawei’s smartphone cameras already produce stunning low-light results, but it looks like that can be improved further.

The new Kirin 990 will power the Huawei Mate 30 series which is going to go official on September 19 and will hit the shelves in October.

Will the new Huawei’s SoC surprise everyone with its high performance and efficiency or will it will lag behind Qualcomm, Samsung and Apple chipsets that will power the upcoming flagships?

The public opinion is already divided, but before building an opinion it is better to gather all the information. And there are a lot of factors influencing it. Here, you will find 10 important things to know about the new HiSilicon Kirin 990, many of which may end up surprising you.

Kirin 990 has an integrated 5G modem

Just like the newly-announced Exynos 980, the Kirin 990 is a chipset which integrates a 5G modem. And it will be the world’s first flagship chipset with an integrated 5G modem to hit the market. Until now, we have seen mobile processors with an external 5G modem in the shelves. To be accurate, Kirin 990 will come in two variants: one with 5G support which will include a Balong 5000 modem, and one LTE-only model. The 5G variant supports sub-6 GHz 5G networks on SA and NSA architectures and it will obviously be included in the most expensive versions of the upcoming Huawei’s flagships. The LTE-only variant should end up in less expensive flagships from the brand.

Kirin 990 is built with the best production process

Huawei’s Kirin 990 mobile platform is built at 7 nm+ with the most advanced production process out there: TSMC’s 7FF+ with EUV. Note that only the 5G version of the chip is built with this production process, while the 4G variant is built at 7 nm just like the old Kirin 980. An advanced production process allows chipsets to be compact, efficient and powerful. And that is exactly the case of the Kirin 990.

Thanks to this advanced manufacturing process, Kirin 990 5G is the world’s first chipset with more than 10.3 billion transistors, while the 4G version has about 8 billion transistors which is still a huge amount.

Kirin 990 should be better than Qualcomm Snapdragon 855

According to both Huawei and the first benchmarks, Kirin 990 will be slightly better than Qualcomm’s flagship option of this year: the Snapdragon 855. During the launch event at IFA 2019, Huawei showed the Geekbench results of both the chipsets and highlighted that Kirin 990 has 10 percent better single-core performance than Snapdragon 855 and 9 percent better multi-core performance. Huawei also claims that it has a 12 percent better big-core efficiency, 35 percent better middle-core efficiency, and 15 percent better little-core efficiency. Note that these terms indicate the three clusters which the Kirin 990 includes.

The 5G variant of the chipset has an octa-core architecture composed of 2x Cortex-A76 CPUs running at 2.86 GHz (big-cores), 2x Cortex-A76 (middle) clocked at 2.36 GHz and 4x Cortex-A55 (little) running at 1.95 GHz. The clock frequency of the middle and little cores is slightly lower for the 4G version of the SoC (2.09 and 1.86 GHz respectively).

World’s first chipset with ISP 5.0 (BM3D) for DSLR-quality noise reduction

If there is one feature which has been Huawei’s focus in the past few years, that’s photography. The Kirin 990 is able to provide DSLR-quality image noise reduction through a new filtering algorithm called BM3D (Block Match 3D) which significantly improves its noise reduction capability in images.

Support for 8K video recording

Kirin 990 even supports 8K video recording at 30 fps with HDR. And it is able to improve noise reduction even in videos. The Kirin 990’s NPU is able to cooperate with the ISP in order to provide a better image quality on all levels, with tons of revolutionary features and technologies. That is why you will see a lot of improvements in photography and videography.

Same GPU as 980 but better graphics performance

Kirin 990 includes a Mali G76 MP16 GPU clocked at 700 MHz: it is the same GPU as the Kirin 980, yet it provides better performance because it integrates 16 cores: 6 more cores compared to the 10 cores found on the Kirin 980. Both the 4G and the 5G version will have this architecture for the GPU. While the Mali G76 has a slightly lower frequency, Huawei believes a wider GPU will improve the chipset performance even if the frequency and the voltage are lower.

A separate Kirin A1 co-processor for less intensive tasks

In order to improve the Kirin 990, Huawei has adopted a co-processor called Kirin A1 for Bluetooth, audio decoding and applications which do not require a lot of power. Thanks to this additional unit, the load on the chipset is reduced and the overall performance is indirectly improved.

Quad-core NPU for AI with DaVinci architecture

If we compare the Kirin 990 with its predecessor, the biggest difference we’ll notice is the NPU (Neural Processing Unit). An element which is often ignored by the average user, but is very important in everyday application. Huawei has used the new DaVinci architecture for the NPU of the Kirin 990, which was first seen on Kirin 810 launched earlier this year. The ‘Big’ Da Vinci cores support both INT8 and FP16 quantization of networks which offers better power solutions to ML inference problems. Further, Huawei has added a Tiny Core NPU that is a smaller and very power-efficient version of Da Vinci architecture connected over the AXI bus. It has lower performance but it can process a lot of tasks to save energy.

Kirin 990 is coming soon on Huawei Mate 30

As we said earlier in this article, Kirin 990 will be the world’s first chipset with an integrated 5G modem to hit the market. Indeed, it will debut in less than two weeks on the Huawei Mate 30 series. The new flagship line-up will be officially unveiled on September 19 and it will start hitting the shelves in October.

There will be more affordable Honor smartphones with the chipset

If you are a Huawei fan you know that the company usually releases more affordable devices with its flagship chipsets, after its most important flagship phones. Usually, the first affordable high-end devices to come with Huawei’s flagship chipsets are released by its sub-brand Honor.

We know for sure that Honor’s first 5G flagship, the Honor V30 5G will feature this Kirin 990 5G. We won’t be surprised to see more smartphones with this chipset in the coming months.
