While brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo often dominate headlines, the Chinese smartphone market is a hotbed of innovation, with several manufacturers producing compelling flagship devices that often fly under the radar.

These “underrated” flagships offer impressive specifications, unique features, and competitive pricing, making them worthy contenders for anyone seeking a premium smartphone experience. This article delves into three such devices released in 2024: the Nubia Z70 Ultra, the Meizu 21 Pro, and the Tecno Phantom V Fold 2.

Nubia Z70 Ultra

The Nubia Z70 Ultra stands out with its focus on imaging and raw performance. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite and offering up to a staggering 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage, this phone is a true performance beast. Its 6.85-inch 1.5K OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and 2000 nits peak brightness delivers a stunning visual experience.

The device also comes with a robust camera system. It boasts a triple rear camera setup comprising a 50MP Sony IMX906 main sensor with a variable aperture (f/1.59-f/4.0), a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens with macro capabilities, and a 64MP periscope telephoto lens. The device also includes a more improved 16MP under-display front camera, maintaining a clean, uninterrupted display.

Beyond hardware, Nubia has incorporated AI features into its Nebula AIOS, including AI Translate for real-time multilingual communication. The phone also boasts IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, adding to its durability. Under the hood, it features a large 6150mAh battery and 80W fast charging, ensuring long-lasting performance. While the global availability might be limited, the Z70 Ultra offers a compelling alternative to mainstream flagships.

Meizu 21 Pro

The Meizu 21 Pro is another contender in this list. This device emphasizes a sleek, flat design with premium materials, including Meizu Titan Glass 2.0 and IP68 certification. Its 6.79-inch 2K+ LTPO display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 21:9 aspect ratio, and 1250 nits peak brightness provides a sharp and immersive viewing experience.

The camera system on the Meizu 21 Pro includes a 50MP main sensor with OIS and EIS, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 10MP optical telephoto lens. While not as groundbreaking as the Nubia’s camera system, it still offers a capable setup for everyday photography. The device also features an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner with heart rate detection.

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, up to 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage, the Meizu 21 Pro offers flagship-level performance. It also features a 5050mAh battery with 80W wired, 50W wireless, and 10W reverse wireless charging, providing versatile charging options. It runs on Flyme OS, built on Android 14, and offers a customized user experience with AI-assisted features.

Tecno Phantom V Fold 2

The Tecno Phantom V Fold 2 represents a significant step forward in foldable smartphone technology. Its book-style design features a 6.42-inch cover screen and a 7.85-inch inner foldable display, both with 120Hz refresh rates. The device is notably slimmer and lighter than its predecessor, making it more practical for daily use.

Tecno has focused on enhancing the user experience with features like a dock bar for improved multitasking and a stylus (Phantom V Pen) for added productivity. The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ processor, coupled with 24GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It has a large 5750mAh battery with 70W fast charging and 15W wireless charging, ensuring ample power.

The Phantom V Fold 2 also boasts a robust camera system, with three 50MP rear cameras (main, ultra-wide, and portrait with 2x optical zoom) and two 32MP front cameras. It runs on HiOS, based on Android 14, and incorporates a suite of AI features, including the Ella assistant powered by Google Gemini, AI-powered image editing tools, and AI-driven productivity features.

Conclusion

These three smartphones, while perhaps overshadowed by more widely known brands, offer compelling propositions for discerning consumers. The Nubia Z70 Ultra excels in imaging and performance, the Meizu 21 Pro showcases a refined design and premium build quality, and the Tecno Phantom V Fold 2 pushes the boundaries of foldable technology with its AI-driven features. These devices serve as a reminder that the Chinese smartphone market continues to innovate and offer unique and compelling options for users worldwide.

One of the competitors of Tesla in the electric vehicle market, Polestar, just unveiled their first phone. We actually knew this one coming up as we shared a post revealing that Polestar would launch on April 23 a few days ago. Furthermore, we previously shared with you that the Polestar Phone would be a Meizu 21 Pro clone before the phone’s release. In fact, the Polestar Phone and the Meizu 21 Pro have same specifications. Let’s take a look at this AI-powered phone that works seamlessly with a Polestar electric car.

Polestar Phone: A new way to control your EV with new AI features

The Polestar Phone phone features Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, 80W wired and 50W wireless charging, and a triple camera configuration that includes a 50 MP main camera (1/1.3″), a 10 MP telephoto camera, and a 13 MP ultrawide-angle camera. We cannot say that the phone’s camera hardware is very powerful. However, we do not expect a phone introduced by an electric vehicle manufacturer to have high-end specifications.

Polestar Phone

We can say that the differentiating factor of the Polestar Phone from the Meizu 21 Pro is the user interface. The phone runs on Polestar Phone OS, which can actually be thought of as a themed version of Flyme OS. The phone’s user interface actually has similar design elements found in the Polestar EV’s user interface design.

Polestar Phone UI

Polestar Phone comes with some AI features, including AI image search, image generation, and text summarization, which we are familiar with seeing on some smartphones. In addition to these features, it comes with Polestar Link to control Polestar electric vehicles, allowing users to monitor the status of their EVs. Polestar Link is a very good tool in China since Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available there. Polestar Link aims to provide a seamless experience to the Chinese EV users.

The phone was launched in China and it’s not known whether it will be available globally or not, the 16GB+1TB variant costs 7,388 CNY in China which is 1,020 USD.

Polestar Phone is said to be in the works for the Chinese market. A recent report claimed it could be a rebranded version of the Meizu 21 Pro, which recently debuted in China. It appears this is indeed true, as images of the Polestar Phone emerged through MIIT certification, revealing a design identical to the Meizu flagship.

Polestar Phone design revealed

Polestar Phone images via MIIT certification

Polestar Phone’s images from MIIT certification suggest that it looks exactly like the Meizu 21 Pro. Being a Polestar product, it has the company’s logo at the centre and the “Polestar Phone” text engraved at the bottom. The certification has no information about the specifications of the device yet. However, it may pack the same internals as the Meizu 21 Pro. Here is a look at the specs of the Meizu phone.

Meizu 21 Pro is all set to launch on Feb. 29 in China. The company aims to focus on AI in the future, which suggests that the 21 Pro could be its last flagship phone. Here’s a look at the details of the device that have emerged so far.

Meizu 21 Pro key specifications

Meizu has officially confirmed that the Meizu 21 Pro will have a 6.79-inch screen with a mTouch Max ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner. The 21 Pro has an aspect ratio comfortable enough for single-handed operation. In addition, the fingerprint sensor will have a larger scanning area, which will assist in faster unlocking.

According to a new leak by tipster Digital Chat Station, the Meizu 21 Pro’s AMOLED LTPO panel will offer a 2K resolution. Likely, the screen may also support a 120Hz refresh rate.

Under the hood, the Meizu 21 Pro will have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and 16 GB of RAM. The tipster did not say anything about the storage of the device. The Meizu 21’s topmost model offers 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. It is likely that the Pro variant may arrive with up to 1 TB of storage.

DCS said that the Meizu 21 Pro has a 50-megapixel primary camera, which appears to the OV50H OmniVision camera sensor. It will be joined by a telephoto camera. The leaker further said that the engineering prototype of the 21 Pro has a periscope camera. It appears that the final device may feature it, as most other competing flagship phones are equipped with a periscope zoom unit. Other leaks have claimed that the device will pack a 5,000mAh battery with 80W fast charging and 50W wireless charging.

The competition in the smartphone market is increasing day by day. In fact, it has become so intense that even giants like Apple and Samsung are finding it challenging to sell devices as they used to. Undoubtedly, Meizu is among the manufacturers affected by this situation. Once holding a significant market share in many different countries, especially in China, the company has drifted away from its glorious days in recent years. In fact, recent information suggests that Meizu might have thrown in the towel in the smartphone market and will fully focus on AI products. However, it seems that the Chinese manufacturer is not yet willing to give up, as the Meizu 21 Pro is set to be officially unveiled on February 29th. Here are the details…

Meizu 21 Pro Could Be the Company’s Last Smartphone

The Meizu 21 Pro will be unveiled at an event in China on February 29th. Just like with any eagerly anticipated phone, there are already numerous speculations circulating on the internet about the 21 Pro. The first and most attention-grabbing of these is the price of the phone. The company’s previous model, the 20 Pro, was released in China at a price of 3,999 Yuan.

Therefore, many of us assumed that the new model would also be priced similarly. However, some sources are suggesting that the Meizu 21 Pro could potentially reach up to 6,000 Yuan, which is approximately $800-$850. At first glance, this price may seem expensive. And you’re right, but it’s important not to forget that the Meizu 21 Pro is a flagship. According to claims, the device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

Additionally, this model will feature a 6.7 inch 2K AMOLED panel with an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint reader. It will also have a battery capacity of 4800mAh and support 80W fast charging. When we look at the rear camera of the phone, there will be a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, and an 8MP telephoto lens. On the front camera, there will be a 40MP sensor.

In addition, a series of artificial intelligence features that we have recently started to see in all smartphone manufacturers will also be available in this model. Meizu recently announced that it has stopped traditional “smartphone” projects to focus on the AI field. Therefore, the Meizu 21 Pro could be Meizu’s last traditional smartphone. Of course, this is just a speculation for now, as there hasn’t been a clear statement on this matter yet.

Last month, the alleged Meizu 21 Pro was approved by the 3C authority of China. A leak that appeared in quick succession revealed that the camera specifications of the device. Now, new leaks have emerged on Weibo to reveal its launch timeframe and key specifications.

Meizu 21 Pro key specifications (rumored)

According to a Chinese leaker, the Meizu 21 Pro will maintain an impressive design similar to the Meizu 21. He disclosed that the Pro variant features a thin and lightweight design, providing a comfortable feel in hand. It will boast an IP68-rated chassis, seemingly incorporating a titanium frame.

The device is outfitted with a 2K OLED display, sourced from a local manufacturer. The display is bordered by white-colored bezels, uniform on all four sides. The screen will house an ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanner with a generously sized scanning area.

While it is not mentioned in the leak, it is likely to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The highest variant of the device may offer 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. It is expected to pack a 5,000mAh battery with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging.

The Meizu 21 has a 200-megapixel + 12-megapixel (ultra-wide) + 5-megapixel (macro) triple camera unit. The new leak suggests that the Pro variant will have a different camera setup comprising a 50-megapixel OV50H OmniVision main camera and a telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. It is likely that the setup may also include an ultra-wide camera. As per another leaker, the Meizu 21 Pro is tentatively scheduled to launch in March of this year.

Meizu is reportedly working on its next flagship phone, the Meizu 21 Pro, for the Chinese market. A Chinese leaker has now disclosed some previously unknown information about the Meizu 21 Pro.

Normally, Meizu releases its flagship phones in pairs, offering both a standard model and a Pro variant. This pattern held true in the previous year with the launch of the Meizu 20 series in March, which included the Meizu 20 and the Meizu 20 Pro. However, Meizu deviated from its usual dual-release strategy in December 2023 by introducing only the Meizu 21. The absence of a Pro model fueled speculation that the company might be abandoning the Pro line altogether. But recent developments suggest that the Meizu 21 Pro could be just around the corner, potentially arriving within a few weeks.

Meizu 21 Pro 3C certification

Meizu 21 Pro 3C certified

Last month, two Meizu devices bearing model numbers, such as M481Q and M481S, were approved by China’s MIIT certification platform. It is speculated that both model numbers are associated with the Meizu 21 Pro. The same models have now emerged in the database of the country’s 3C certification.

The 3C certification of the alleged Meizu 21 Pro reveals that it may ship with an 80W fast charger. The power brick (UP2040) mentioned in the certification suggests similar fast-charging capabilities to the Meizu 21, making the Meizu 21 Pro likely to support 80W wired charging. Being a Pro model, it may also arrive with support for 50W wireless charging.

The rumor mill is yet to reveal concrete details about the Meizu 21 Pro. However, the device will likely be equipped with a larger display than the Meizu 21, which is equipped with a 6.55-inch AMOLED screen. The Pro variant’s display may support a 2K resolution. Like the standard model, the Pro variant is expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.

A recent report revealed that the Meizu 21 Pro may house a 5,020mAh battery, which will be larger than the Meizu 21’s 4,800mAh battery. In addition, the Pro variant’s rear camera module may include a telephoto or a periscope telephoto camera.
In November, Meizu launched the Meizu 21 flagship smartphone in China. While it typically introduces a Pro version alongside the standard model, equipped with a larger screen and bigger battery, the Meizu 21 Pro was noticeably absent during the initial announcement. However, a recent development indicates that the Pro variant has secured approval from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, suggesting an imminent release.

Meizu 21 Pro receives MIIT certification

Two new Meizu models, bearing the model numbers M481Q and M481S, have recently received clearance from the CMIIT authority, as evidenced by the screenshots above. These models are believed to be variants of the upcoming Meizu 21 Pro. While these listings suggest an imminent launch in China, they remain tight-lipped about the device’s specifications.

The Meizu 21 Pro will likely come equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which also powers the standard model. There is a high possibility that the device will feature a bigger 2K resolution display as the Meizu 21 has a 6.55-inch AMOLED panel that offers a 1.5K resolution.

The Meizu 21 has a 4,800mAh battery with 80W charging. The 21 Pro may likely house a bigger 5,020mAh battery with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging support.

The Meizu 20 Pro came with three 50-megapixel rear-facing cameras, one of which was a telephoto camera with optical zoom support. While the Meizu 21 lacks a telephoto camera, the Pro variant may come equipped with it.

It is unclear whether the Meizu 21 Pro will debut within this month in China. If it does not happen, it may debut in January 2024.

Meizu 21 display has symmetrical bezels around it

Meizu has officially announced that the Meizu 21 features a custom-made 6.55-inch Samsung AMOLED display with symmetrical bezels measuring 1.74mm on all four sides. Notably, the iPhone 15 Pro boasts similar 1.75mm symmetrical bezels, while the Xiaomi 14 has a slightly slimmer bottom bezel at 1.71mm. However, the Xiaomi 14’s top and side bezels, although thinner at 1.61mm, do not maintain symmetry.

As per previous reports, the Meizu 21 will have a 4,800mAh battery with 80W charging. The exact size of the Meizu 21 Pro’s display is not known yet. However, it should be a larger device with a screen size measuring around 6.7 inches.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will power the Meizu 21 and 21 Pro. The Pro variant is expected to house a 5,020mAh battery with 80W charging support. It is unclear whether the Pro model will also offer wireless charging.

The Meizu 21 and 21 Pro are both expected to feature an OIS-enabled 50-megapixel primary camera. The standard model is expected to feature an ultra-wide camera and a telephoto camera, whereas the Pro edition may have an ultra-wide camera and a periscope telephoto camera. Both phones are also expected to feature an RGB ring LED flash on the back. Both phones are likely to come preloaded with Flyme 10-based Android 14.

The official teaser released by the brand reveals that the Meizu 21 series will sport the slimmest-ever bottom bezel. The above teaser suggests that the chin of the Meizu 21 will measure 1.74mm. Customers in China, who are interested in purchasing the Meizu 21 series, can pre-order it for 1 Yuan starting from Nov. 15.

Although it has been confirmed that the Meizu 21 and 21 Pro will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the brand has not officially disclosed any other details or specifications about these smartphones.

The Meizu 21, which bears the model number M461Q, was recently approved by China’s 3C authority. The certification revealed that it may arrive with support for 80W charging. Reports have revealed that the model numbers M461H and M461S also belong to the Meizu 21.

As per a recent report, the Meizu 21 will have a 4,800mAh battery and the Meizu 21 Pro will have a 5,020mAh battery. Both phones are said to support 80W wired charging, whereas the Pro variant is also expected to offer 50W wireless charging.

The Meizu 21, on the other hand, is said to have M481Q and M481S model numbers. Now that the company has started teasing the arrival of the Meizu 21 series, it appears that both smartphones may launch by November end or early December in China.

Meizu is one of the brands that is gearing up to launch Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered flagship phones in China. It is speculated that the brand may unveil the Meizu 21 and Meizu 21 Pro featuring the new chip very soon in the home market. Today, a Meizu device, probably belonging to the Meizu 21 series, bagged radio certification in China. The certification is a good hint that the Meizu 21 series’ launch may not be far away.

Meizu 21 series likely to launch soon

Meizu 21 Pro radio certification

As per reports, the standard version of Meizu 21 carries the model number M461Q. It is speculated that model numbers M461H and M461S are also associated with the Meizu 21. Reports have revealed that the M481Q and M481S belong to the Meizu 21 Pro.

As can be seen in the above screenshot, the alleged Meizu 21 Pro bearing the model number M481S received radio certification in China. The listing only confirms that it will arrive with support for UWB ultra-wideband technology. To recall, the Meizu 21 (M461Q) was spotted on the same certification website last month.

Likely, the Meizu 21 series will soon receive 3C and TENAA certification in China in the coming days. Hence, it appears that it may break by the end of this year or early January in China. Here is a look at what to expect from the Meizu 21 series:

As per recent leaks, the Meizu 21 will feature a flexible BOE Q9 display that offers a 1.5K screen resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, 2160Hz PWM dimming, and Gorilla Glass Victus screen protection. In terms of battery life, the Meizu 21 series is equipped with a 4,800mAh battery with 80W charging. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered phone may come with up to 16 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and up to 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage.

As for the camera setup, the Meizu 21 is likely to feature a 32-megapixel Samsung GD2 front camera and a rear setup featuring an OIS-enabled 50-megapixel Sony IMX966 primary camera, a 16-megapixel Samsung S5K3P9 ultra-wide lens, and a 12-megapixel IMX663 portrait telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom.

Meizu’s Mysterious Announcement for October 27

Several major smartphone brands like Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, and others have already announced their plans to use this latest platform, with Xiaomi leading the way. Meizu has also teased pre-orders for new products starting on October 27, although it’s unclear if these are part of the Meizu 21 series. The company’s official statement says “Pursuing the ultimate product experience, breaking the boundaries of technology once again through action.”

It’s worth noting that Meizu’s 20 series came relatively late in the cycle of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 releases. However, the rumored specifications for the Meizu 21 series, including certified battery capacities and the likely use of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, suggest that a launch might be imminent.

The Pro variant of the Meizu 21 series is expected to feature a 4,920mAh battery (with a typical capacity of 5,020mAh), while the standard Meizu 21 will have a 4,700mAh battery (with a typical capacity of 4,700mAh). In terms of design, there may be similarities with its predecessor, but potential enhancements could include a 50MP primary camera equipped with RGB ring LED flash technology.

At a recent Qualcomm event, Meizu was listed as one of the initial manufacturers for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, further fueling speculation that the Meizu 21 series might launch before the end of 2023. Keep an eye out for updates and leaks regarding the Meizu 21 series.

Meizu 21, 21 Pro battery capacities

Meizu 20

A new development reveals that the Meizu 21 Pro has successfully obtained national quality certification for its lithium-ion battery pack, identified as model BA481. It has a rated capacity of 4,920mAh, which suggests that it will have a typical capacity of approximately 5,020mAh.

In addition, the battery for the standard Meizu 21, labeled as model BA461, has also received certification. It features a rated capacity of 4,700mAh, with a typical capacity of around 4,800mAh.

As per reports, model numbers M461S and M461H are associated with the standard Meizu 21, whereas the Pro variant has the M481S model number. Since there has been significant progress in the development of the Meizu 21 series compared to previous models, it is anticipated that they will be launched before the end of the year.

The Meizu 21 series is expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The overall appearance of the Meizu 21 series is not expected to change significantly, retaining the existing vertical camera arrangement, a cantered punch-hole display, and slim bezels.

A new 50-megapixel sensor is slated to replace the primary camera of the Meizu 21 line-up, and there is speculation that it will incorporate RGB ring LED flash technology for the rear cameras. These developments have fuelled expectations for an earlier-than-anticipated launch of the Meizu 21 series in China, possibly within this year.

Details about the Meizu 21 series have already started to emerge online. In line with this, a new phone with the model number M461Q has recently been registered with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). This phone is likely to be one of the models in the Meizu 21 series and is rumored to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

While there’s not much the certification reveals, tipster Digital Chat Station has shared some details about the smartphone. He says that the main upgrades will be in the core configurations, while the appearance changes will be minor.

One of the biggest upgrades in the lineup could possibly be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. It is Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship mobile processor and will be announced at the end of October 2023.

Besides the processor, the tipster suggests that the Meizu 21 series will feature a 50-megapixel main camera with a large outsole sensor. Likewise, the standard version of the phone will be equipped with a standard telephoto lens, while the Pro version will feature a periscope telephoto lens. The lineup is also expected to retain the flat-screen design of the Meizu 20 series.

Meizu made a return to the flagship smartphone market this year with the Meizu 20 series. The lineup includes three models: Meizu 20, Meizu 20 Pro, and Meizu 20 INFINITY Unbounded Edition, all equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processors.

Like other Chinese smartphone brands, Meizu also seems to be working on its next flagship series, the Meizu 21. The lineup may include at least two models, such as the Meizu M21 and M21 Pro. A recent Weibo post by popular tipster Digital Chat Station revealed key details about the launch and design of the Meizu 21 series.

Meizu 21 series key details tipped

Meizu 20

Meizu has built a reputation for launching smartphones with impressive designs. A recent report claimed that the upcoming Meizu 21 series’ design will be a refined version of what was made available on the Meizu 20 lineup. As revealed by DCS, a notable addition to the phone’s rear design is an RGB ring LED flash. However, its specific function remains undisclosed. It is possible that this LED flash could illuminate in varying colors to signal different types of notifications.

The Meizu 20 and 20 Pro are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. The Meizu 21 series is expected to feature the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which will debut in October this year. Other reports have claimed that the Meizu 21 and Meizu 21 Pro will be equipped with a flat display and an OIS-enabled 50-megapixel primary camera. The Pro model is also rumored to feature a pericope telephoto camera.

The new leak also claims that the Meizu 21 series will launch earlier than its predecessor. To recall, the Meizu 20 series was announced at the end of March this year and was available for purchase in April. There is a possibility that the Meizu 21 series may launch a bit earlier, in the first quarter of 2024.

In related news, Meizu is also said to be working on the Flyme Auto software for vehicles. The Flyme Auto, which is based on Flyme OS 10, is expected to power the Geely car’s infotainment systems in 2024.
