Xiaomi has an EOS (End of Support) smartphone list on its website. The company updates this list with newer devices in a timely fashion.

Recently, the company updated this list with three popular budget phones from 2020. These handsets will no longer receive software updates going forward.

Redmi Note 9

The below-listed are the latest Xiaomi smartphones to reach their end of life.

Redmi Note 9

Redmi 9

Poco M2

All of these products were released in 2020. They debuted with MIUI 11 based on Android 10.

Throughout their life, these devices received two major MIUI and Android updates. Therefore, they currently boot MIUI 13 based on Android 12.

This means the software on board these handsets is about 2 years old now. However, they are able to perform normally as they can run almost all Android applications without any issues.

So users need not worry about upgrading to a newer phone unless they want better hardware or 5G connectivity. However, they should keep in mind that there won’t be any security updates, except for something critical (very rare).

The aforementioned smartphones are some of the best of their time. Xiaomi sold millions of them across the world. So you will probably continue seeing them in public despite them reaching their end of support.

Do you own any of these devices? If so, share your experience with us in the comment section below or on our official social media handles.

Now is the turn for another budget smartphone, POCO M2.

POCO M2

POCO India has revealed that the POCO M2 has sold over a million units in India. Through a tweet, the company posted the achievement and said its orders have already crossed 1 million on Flipkart. For the unware, the company’s devices are sold online exclusively via the e-commerce giant.

This comes ten days after the POCO’s anniversary of becoming an independent brand. To recall, Xiaomi’s Manu Kumar Jain had announced the split on January 17, 2020. It is surprising to see POCO managing to attract the audience towards it online amidst heavy competition.

POCO M2 was unveiled back in September 2020. The smartphone, with MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, launched at a starting price of ₹10,999($150). However, the device received its first price cut early this month. Accordingly, it currently starts at ₹9,999 for the 6GB RAM, 64GB storage variant.

As Country Director Anuj Kumar pointed out, POCO has evolved to become a brand that can cater to customers at multiple price points. The company has been rebranding few phones lately and POCO M2 is no exception to this. It is a rebadged version of the Redmi 9 smartphone that is also selling in India.

As a result of this diversification, POCO has garnered good sales, and becoming the third-largest smartphone brand within a year is just icing on the cake. Also, it’s worth noting that the company had sold over a million smartphones in total during the Flipkart Big Billion Days sales back in October.

A couple of weeks later, the device’s Indian Version, POCO X2 is getting the latest OS update.

POCO X2 users in India will get a new MIUI 12.1 version update with firmware version 12.1.2.0.RGHINXM. This update not only bundles a few bug fixes, security patches but also includes stable Android 11. It reportedly weighs 2.6GB and is currently rolling out to the device via OTA(Over-The-Air) update.

As mentioned above, the update also brings the latest January 2021 security patch along with it. You can take a look at the changelog below:

Optimizations:

Noise could be heard when the screen was turned off in some cases

Updated Android Security Patch to January 2021. Increased system security.

Stable MIUI based on Android 11

With this, POCO X2 becomes the first POCO in India to get the Android 11 update. As for the Global tally, we already have the POCO F2 Pro running on a stable version. This is not the only first for the X2 in India. Back in August, it became the first smartphone in India to get the MIUI 12 update.

Now that POCO has checked the year-old X2 update mark, it’s next target should be the budget devices POCO M2 Pro, and its sibling POCO M2 in the country.

Anyway, the new update also fixes a critical creaking noise bug that occurred in certain screen-off scenarios. If you are living in India, you can try out the update by navigating to the update section in Settings. Consequently, if you are impatient to wait for the phased rollout to appear, you can download it here and install it manually.

Design

The POCO M2 does not offer the most modern design you can get in the affordable segment. With its waterdrop notch and centrally-placed camera module, it looks definitely more outdated than its two rivals. The Realme 7i is the most futuristic one with its punch-hole display and its camera module reminiscent of the iPhone 11 lineup. On the other hand, the Redmi Note 9 offers a water-repellent coating which is always useful for those who often use their smartphone outside. Thanks to its 20:9 aspect ratio, Realme 7i has a taller and narrower design which makes it even more attractive.

Display

Do you prefer having a Full HD+ display with a higher level of detail or an HD+ display with a lower definition and a higher 90 Hz refresh rate? If your answer is the first, then go for the Redmi Note 9. It has a Full HD+ display just like the POCO M2, but it comes with higher brightness, so it has a definitely better panel. If you do not mind so much about the resolution and you would like to try a higher refresh rate to get a smoother viewing experience, then the perfect option for you is the Realme 7i with its 90 Hz display. POCO M2, Redmi Note 9, and Realme 7i all come with IPS displays: what changes are the resolution and the refresh rate.

Specs & Software

The Realme 7i wins the hardware comparison. What makes its better is not the chipset, but its memory configuration. It sports 8 GB of RAM, while you can get max 4 or 6 GB of RAM with Redmi Note 9 and POCO M2. Further, while Redmi Note 9 and POCO M2 are equipped with eMMC internal storage, Realme 7i has faster UFS 2.1 native storage with a 128 GB capacity. Also, consider that the Snapdragon 662 is built with a better production process than Helio G80 and Helio G85 (11 nm vs 12 nm), so it is even less energy-demanding. Last but not least, the 90 Hz refresh rate will let the Realme 7i look smoother (but as said above, say goodbye to FHD+ resolution). If you need the device with the best performance, go for the Realme 7i. All run Android 10 out of the box.

Camera

Given that the Realme 7i has a better main sensor for its rear camera setup, it wins the camera comparison as well. It sports a 64 MP midrange-class main camera paired with an 8 MP ultrawide lens and a pair of 2 MP lens for macro and depth info. The secondary sensors are the same as Redmi Note 9 and POCO M2, but the main sensor changes. The Redmi Note 9 is superior to the POCO M2 thanks to its 48 MP main sensor. Besides being a better camera phone, Realme 7i is even a better selfie phone thanks to its 16 MP front snapper.

Battery

There are no huge differences between the battery life of these handsets: they have more or less the same battery capacity (around 5000 mAh), but given that Realme 7i has a lower display resolution and a more efficient chipset, it should last a bit more. On the other hand, Redmi Note 9 supports reverse charging and it can be used as a power bank.

Price

Realme 7i is priced Rs. 11,999 / $164 in India (8/128 GB), Redmi Note 9 costs Rs. 12,499 / $170 (4/64 GB), and POCO M2 costs Rs. 10,999 / $150 (6/64 GB). Realme 7i sports a higher refresh rate, better cameras, and a superior hardware department. But Redmi Note 9 has a Full HD+ resolution instead of HD+, as well as reverse charging. POCO M2 is inferior to both but it has a higher value for money. I would personally try the Realme 7i. What would your choice be?

Design

POCO M2, Motorola Moto G9, and Realme Narzo 10 are nothing special if we talk about the design. They are cheap phones made of polycarbonate, but this does not mean they have bad aesthetics. These handsets come with narrow bezels around the display, waterdrop notches, and even protection against water (they are water-repellent but not waterproof). Despite it might look more outdated at a first glance, I like the Realme Narzo 10 due to its smaller camera module, and it is also slightly more compact than its two rivals.

Display

Realme Narzo 10 and Motorola Moto G9 are a bit disappointing when it comes to the display: not only they have IPS panels, but they come with below-average HD+ resolution. Instead, the POCO M2 features a Full HD+ panel providing a higher level of detail. Given that these phones feature wide 6.5-inch panels, the resolution might make the difference for a lot of users. In each case, you get a cheap IPS panel, nothing special, so you’d better focus on the rest of the specifications.

Specs & Software

Realme Narzo 10 and POCO M2 are built around a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, while Motorola Moto G9 is powered by the Snapdragon 662. Despite most people trust Qualcomm more than MediaTek, the Helio G80 is actually a more powerful chipset than the Snapdragon 662: that is why Motorola Moto G9 loses this comparison. Between Realme Narzo 10 and POCO M2, the latter wins because it packs a higher amount of RAM (6 GB vs 4 GB). In each case, you get Android 10 out of the box, but while on the Motorola Moto G9 it is close to stock Android, on the Realme Narzo 10 and the POCO M2 it is highly customized.

Camera

On the paper, the most advanced camera department belongs to the Realme Narzo 10, which sports a 48 MP quad-camera including an ultrawide sensor and a pair of 2 MP lenses for macro and depth info. Even the front camera is superior on the Realme Narzo 10 with its 16 MP resolution. Right after, we got the Motorola Moto G9 with its 48 MP triple camera. POCO M2 is disappointing: it still features a quad-camera, but its main sensor is an inferior 13 MP unit. If you want a good camera phone, you should not choose the POCO M2.

Battery

POCO M2, Realme Narzo 10, and Motorola Moto G9 come with exactly the same battery capacity: 5000 mAh. But given that the POCO M2 features a Full HD+ display (higher resolution), we believe its battery life will be inferior. The Motorola Moto G9 should be better because it has an HD+ display and a more efficient processor built at 11 nm. Further, Motorola Moto G9 features a slightly faster charging technology with a 20W power (Realme Narzo 10 and POCO M2 have 18W). On the other hand, Realme Narzo 10 supports reverse charging. The battery life of the Realme Narzo 10 should be very close to the Motorola Moto G9, but unfortunately, we did not test both of these devices, so we can not give you a definitive verdict.

Price

The starting price of the Realme Narzo 10 in India is Rs. 11,999, which roughly translates into €138 or $163. Note that we are talking about the configuration with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The POCO M2 is priced Rs. 10,999 (equivalent to about €127 or $150) in the base variant with 6/64 GB. At last, the Motorola Moto G9 has a listing price of Rs. 11,499 in the base 4/64 GB configuration, which roughly translates into €132 or $155. If we exclude the cameras, POCO M2 is actually a better phone despite it is more affordable. But if you need better cameras, then you should go either for the Realme Narzo 10. The Motorola Moto G9 is still a great device, but I actually prefer the Realme Narzo 10 due to its better front camera and reverse charging support. Naturally, that is just my preference.
Judging from the moniker, the POCO M2 will have weaker specs than the POCO M2 Pro that debuted in July. The POCO M2 Pro is now selling in India with a starting price of Rs. 13,999 (~$191). There is a possibility that the POCO M2 may debut in the country with a price tag of around Rs. 10,000 (~$137). Hence, it could end up as the most affordable smartphone from the brand.

POCO M2 could be a Redmi 9 variant?

In June, the Xiaomi phones with model numbers M2004J19I and M2004J19PI received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). In the same month, the M2004J19I and M2004J19PI along some other model number variants had appeared as Redmi 9.

The M2004J19I and M2004J19PI models had also appeared in the database of TUV Rheinland certification platform. Interestingly, the M2004J19I and M2004J19PI were mentioned as Redmi and POCO devices, respectively.

The Redmi 9 Prime that debuted last month in India has M2004J19PI. Hence, a slightly lower version of the Redmi 9 could be announced in India as POCO M2. Hopefully, more details of the POCO M2 will surface before the Sept. 8 launch.

In the past few days, the handset debuted in markets like Spain and Malaysia. The smartphone is coming to India since it is one of the major markets for Xiaomi. Recently, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) had certified two model numbers that belong to the Redmi 9 phone. Interestingly, the TUV certification of Redmi 9 model numbers reveal that one variant may debut as a POCO device.

As can be seen in the screenshot taken from the BIS site, the Indian authority recently approved two model numbers such as M2004J19I and M2004J19PI. These Redmi 9 model numbers along with M2004J19AG (Europe variant), M2004J19C (China variant), and M2004J19G (global) were spotted at Bluetooth SIG body in May.

Editor’s Pick: Redmi 9 unveiled in China with MIUI 12, 6GB+128GB variant & dual-band WiFi

The BIS listing suggests that M2004J19I and M2004J19PI are heading to India. The above-mentioned model numbers have also surfaced on TUV Rheinland certification. The listing reveals that M2004J19G, M2004J19I, M2004J19C, and M2004J19AG are Redmi branded devices whereas the M2004J19PI is POCO phone.

The exact product name of the M2004J19PI is not known. However, it is likely to be a Redmi 9 variant with POCO branding. Hence, it is likely to debut as the cheapest POCO smartphone. It could be a POCO M2 series.

POCO is gearing up to launch its next phone in India. It is believed that a variant of the Redmi Note 9 series could be breaking cover in India as POCO M2 Pro. The M2004J19PI may end up as POCO M2. Since these details aren’t officially confirmed, readers are advised to digest the report with a grain of salt.

The company is expected to take the wraps off a new smartphone pretty soon, though. A recent rumour tips the next Poco smartphone to launch with the next couple of days in India. That has been given credence by Oppo India’s GM Manmohan Chandolu. The exec disclosed in a recent interview that the new phone will hit India next month.

Chandolu also clarified that the smartphone won’t be the POCO F2 Pro but rather, it will be a product released exclusively for consumers in the South East Asian country.

Taking previous rumours into account, we can predict that the smartphone will likely be the Poco M2 Pro. The phone goes by the codename “gram” and from kernel source code spotted, the model is said to have similar features with the Redmi Note 9 Pro. The M2Pro is also expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 720G chipset.

During the interview, Poco India GM also discussed about the company’s upcoming product lineup which includes the Pop Buds TWS earphones. Manmohan disclosed that the product is developed alongside Xiaomi’s R&D team which means they will likely share similarities with one of the current Xiaomi TWS earphones. Also, he didn’t squash expectations of the F2 Pro launching at some point in India later this year.

The new marketing campaign from the company is #POCOForIndia, which as the hashtag clearly indicates, highlights how the brand is dedicated to the Indian market. The campaign comes at a time when certain sections of people are calling for the boycott of Chinese products because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As for the new smartphone teased by the company, it has not yet revealed which model will get launched in the country, nor has the brand provided any timeline for the same. We expect POCO to share more information about this in the coming days or weeks.

The company recently launched the POCO F2 Pro smartphone which is currently available for purchase in the United States and Europe and recently got launched in Malaysia. So, the company could bring out this model in the Indian market.

Another smartphone that could get launched in India is the POCO M2. It has been leaked a few times in the past and recently, the device passed through the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certification process.

Along with this new smartphone, we expect the company to launch its first truly wireless earphones. POCO had recently crowdsourced the naming of its TWS earphones and the majority of people voted for POCO Pop Buds.

The Redmi Note 9 and Mi 10 phones that are yet to go official in India are still listed on the RF exposure page, but the POCO M2 Pro that has a model number of M2003J6CI can no longer be seen on it. While some claimed that POCO India will launch the POCO M2 Pro as a phone specially designed for India, others said that the moniker may have surfaced by mistake and it does not exist. A fresh report on XDA Developers reveals that the POCO M2 Pro could be a mid-range device driven by the Snapdragon 720G octa-core processor.

According to XDA tipsters, the M2003J6CI that is expected to debut as POCO M2 Pro is codenamed as “gram” and they also managed to find “gram_in_global” firmware. The publication claims that these findings suggests that the phone could be heading to India.

In March, Xiaomi India had launched Redmi Note 9 Pro (M2003J6A1I) and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (M2003J6B1I) smartphones in India. It is being said that the POCO M2 Pro may have some points of sameness with the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Pro Max phones. The report further states that the “gram” codenamed was previously seen in Redmi Note 9 Pro’s kernel source code. The handset’s firmware also carried watermark for “gram.”

According to the publication, since the Redmi Note 9 Pro could be driven by the Snapdragon 720G octa-core processor, there is a possibility that the POCO M2 Pro may feature the same SoC. There is a possibility that the phone could be featuring some other Snapdragon 7 series chipset with compatible software.

The Xiaomi Mi 10 phone that is scheduled to go official on May 8 in India is also listed on the RF exposure page. Its model number is M2001J21. While the Redmi Note 9 and Mi 10 are still listed on the RF exposure, the POCO M2 Pro’s listing could not be found at the time of writing this post. The M2 Pro name suggest there could be a vanilla POCO M2 phone. However, the removal of the POCO M2 Pro listing suggest that there could be an error.

Xiaomi had launched the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max and Redmi Note 9 Prov phones that debuted in March in India. Both models have respective model numbers M2003J6B1I and M2003J6A1I. There is a possibility that there could be some resemblance between M2003J6CI and the Redmi Note 9 series. It is advisable to wait for to know more about the specifications of the M2003J6CI phone.
