Last week, we reported that ByteDance has shut down Smartisan Mobile and that no new smartphones will be released by the Chinese manufacturer. The news must have gotten owners of Smartisan phones worried, especially those who picked up the Nut R2 flagship that was announced just three months ago. The manufacturer has released a statement that allays their fears and concerns.

The official Smartisan Mobile Weibo account confirmed in a post a few days ago that its research and development team is indeed being merged with the educational hardware team at ByteDance to focus on educational products. That was the decision ByteDance took following the shutdown of the mobile phone brand.

In the same post, it was revealed that after-sales service and system maintenance for its current lineup of Smartisan phones will not be affected. So if you own a Smartisan phone and run into an issue, you should still be able to get support when you contact the company.

The official Smartisan OS Weibo account also quoted the post and added that Smartisan OS will continue to be maintained and that they will continue to explore innovative opportunities for the operating system.

Smartisan OS may not be popular but the operating system offers several features that stock Android doesn’t have. From the ability to run more than two apps side by side, to productivity features that allow you to easily extract key information from documents to a more advanced copy and paste feature.

Smartisan OS also has a desktop mode which is practically like a different OS built into the main OS that is called TNT OS. When a supported device is connected to an external display, a monitor, or a projector, it switches to this desktop mode. TNT Desktop OS not only provides a desktop-like experience but is also packed with productivity tools that are not available when you are in ”mobile mode”.

Last year, Smartisan announced the TNT Go, a Surface Go-like 2-in-1 device that provides on-the-go access to TNT OS. The device is powered by the Smartisan Nut R2 as it doesn’t have a built-in operating system. It works by connecting the Nut R2 phone to it via a cable or wirelessly. When connected, it automatically brings up TNT OS so the owner can work in a desktop-like environment wherever they might be. The TNT Go has a 2K touchscreen display, a detachable keyboard, and a stylus with 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity.

While there is no news of that happening yet, we hope this is not the end of Smartisan Mobile and look forward to seeing it rise again.

Today, Chinese smartphone maker Smartisan officially announced that the company has now started rolling out the latest Smartisan OS 7.12 version update step 3.0 to Nut Pro 3 smartphone which brings several new features.

The update brings several new features, especially related to the Split Screen. You can now just pull down screen from the two corners at the top or press the shortcut key and volume down button to open the split screen interface.

In that, you can run four applications simultaneously — one main app and three sub-interfaces. As you can seen in the image attached, there are four different user interfaces on a single screen.

Further, the company has confirmed that the Smartisan OS 7.2 stable version will also be released to Nut R1 and Nut Pro 2s smartphones, but in early next year. The company is also expected to reveal more details about the devices getting this new update in the coming weeks or months.

Smartisan Nut Pro 3 flagship smartphone was launched in October, featuring a 6.39-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a wide color gamut and 2 nits ultra-low brightness. It also comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus octa-core processor and comes in three configurations – 8GB RAM + 128GB internal storage, 8GB RAM + 256GB internal storage, and 12GB RAM + 256GB storage.

In the camera department, the device features Sony’s IMX586 48MP f/1.75 camera and it is paired with a 13MP 1.12um ultrawide angle camera with a 123° FOV. There is also an 8MP telephoto camera and a 5MP 2cm macro camera. The selfie camera is a 20MP Samsung 3T1 sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and 1.8um pixel size.

The device runs Smartisan UI 7.0 based on Smartisn OS 7.0 operating system which brings lots of new features including Bing Bang 3.0, One Step 2.0, and Idea Pills 2.0. Its 4000mAh battery supports both 5V/3A and 9V/2A fast charge. There is dual-SIM support, a USB Type-C port but no audio jack.

As for the pricing, the Smartisan Nut Pro 3 is priced at ¥2899 (~$412) for the 8GB RAM + 128GB version. The 8GB RAM + 256GB version is ¥3199 (~$455) and the 12GB RAM + 256GB version is ¥3599 (~$511).

At the launch event of the Smartisan Nut Pro 2S smartphone, Smartisan also announced the new Smartisan OS 6.6.5 update which comes with 41 new features. The newly unveiled Nut Pro 2S runs on the new Smartisan OS 6.6.5 which comes with three major Infinite such as Infinite Screen, TNT Workstation and Bullet SMS.

Infinite Screen

Infinite Screen brings a new kind of VR driven gesture-based navigation on Nut Pro 2S in which all the pages appear as if they are tiled in the space and users are just required to move the Smartisan phone in appropriate direction to switch to that page. Here is a video that showcases the experience of navigating through the world of unlimited screens.

In the above video, it can be seen that Infinite Screen offers an unlimited space of maps on which the users are required to move their phones to browse through them to carry out certain functions. Few seconds in the video, a girl can be seen snapping a selfie by simply lifting up the phone and accessing the camera app without using her fingers. After shooting a selfie, she moves the phone to the right to access the messaging app in order to send the snapped photo to her contact without even touching on the screen once.

Smartisan has partnered with a number of manufactures to develop Infinite Screen. For example, Face++ provides technical support for human eye tracking and Gaudi Maps has customized map functions for its depth.

The whole idea behind introducing Infinite Screen is to minimize the movement of the fingers on the phone. Since the function requires OS optimization along with the usage of backend hardware to load all the nearby tiles/pages in real-time, it remains to be seen how it will work in reality. Moreover, since users must move along with the phone in the so-called “infinite” world while using Infinite Screen, there is a risk of accidentally hitting people that are standing near.

TNT Workstation

TNT Workstation feature was first announced at the launch of Nut R1 flagship phone few months ago. Smartisan CEO Lao Luo did not demonstrate the TNT workstation feature that allow users to take advantage of full-fledged desktop experience by connecting the phone to a larger display. He only confirmed that apart from Smartisan Nut R1, the Nut Pro 2S will support TNT Workstation.

Bullet SMS

Bullet SMS is a fast and convenient chat software that supports voices and text messages. Since it is available through global fall function, it can be accessed through any screen without entering the app. It brings three kinds of messaging options such as voice + text, pure voice and plain text. When voice + text is selected, it will be able to recognize and convert voice into text. Smartisan claims that the voice recognition rate is as high as 97 percent.

Smartisan took the wraps off the Nut Pro 2s in a ceremony held in China on Monday. The company also announced a number of other products which include a TNT Workstation, an Infinite screen as well as Bullet SMS. A new Smartisan OS 6.6.5 which has a new lock screen, frosted glass feature for privacy and a game acceleration mode was also announced. The Nut Pro 2s runs on the new OS. 

Towards the end of the conference, Smartisan’s CEO Lao Luo released a blockbuster news that the company will be launching its next-generation OS development plan in the next six months. What makes the news interesting is the disclosure that the new operating system is not developed based on Android. Also, the OS compatibility will extend beyond mobile phones. The TNT workstation which was first announced during the Nut R1 launch and then during the Nut Pro 2S launch is an example of the multi-platform seamless operation experience which the new OS will offer. The Smartisan TNT Workstation reminds us of the Microsoft Surface Studio but doesn’t run on Window. However, it can be used as an interface to display the Smartisan R1 and Nut Pro 2s on the large display. Already, the Workstation comes with custom office programs (TNT Word, TNT PPT, and TNT Excel) with live animation preview, voice input, and command support, text drag and drop, and text style modification.

Apparently, Smartisan is now trying to unify the OS to create seamless operation across multiple platforms (smartphones and desktop PC). This is a lofty ambition which may likely not fly. At present, only Apple has been able to achieve its own software and hardware integration for PC and phones without reliance on other operating systems. All other OEMs in the smartphone industry rely squarely on Android OS. Samsung had attempted to take on Android with the Tizen OS but that project seems to have been abandoned, with Tizen currently being used only on Samsung smartwatches, smart TV and other smart home gadgets. Samsung phones are powered by Android OS while the budget Tizen-powered Z-series seems to have been rested. The major issue was the large app database available on Android. Well, Smartisan is postured as an innovative and ambitious company and so, it could actually have something up its sleeves that’ll rock the boat.

We will soon meet the Smartisan T2 flagship, but even before the official unveiling on December 30, we have got a good look at the upcoming smartphone. Thanks to a detailed leak, we now know how the phone looks like.

According to the pictures that were leaked yesterday, the upcoming Smartisan T2 flagship smartphone will still use 2.5D glass, both on the front as well as the back. You can see a metal frame around the body and the overall body could be made out of plastic. Interestingly, this particular device will feature three physical buttons up front, right below the display. So, you have the home button, the menu button as well as the back key.

Another interesting thing revealed by these images is that the Smartisan T2 may not feature a fingerprint sensor. The back is clean, and the home button up front doesn’t look like it has a fingerprint sensor. So, unlike other flagship smartphones, it looks like Smartisan is skipping this feature on its upcoming device.

Apart from these pictures, we already know the possible specifications of the device. The phone will reportedly come with Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor with 3GB RAM and 16GB/ 32GB and 64GB memory options. The screen will be compact measuring 4.95-inches with FHD 1080p resolution. The rear camera will be of 21MP while the front facing shooter of 5MP. The battery is decent for a 5-inch device, with a capacity of 2490mAh. The phone will come pre-installed with the new Smartisan OS 2.5, which has become one of the highlighted features of the company’s smartphones.

You can expect the pricing to be around 1999 Yuan which comes to approximately $308.

On April 20 at 3pm, the tickets to the Smartisan smartphone conference to be held on May 20 are officially up on sale. Smartisan OS was first developed by Hammer Technology that originated in China with its founder named Luo Yonghao. The presence of the new platform is expected to break the dominance of MIUI and FlyMe presence in the Chinese market at the moment.

Through Weibo, the Chinese based social networking, Luo Yonghao reportedly that he will officially announce the launch date Smartisan operating system that was originally going to be realized on the date of March 27, 2013 which will come in China.
