Sony looks like it’s preparing its next big step in console graphics, and this time the focus is on AI. PlayStation’s lead architect has confirmed that machine learning-based frame generation feature is on the roadmap. It aims to improve the frame rate without needing a raw jump in hardware power.

The update comes from Mark Cerny, who spoke about Sony’s plans in a recent interview highlighted by Digital Foundry. According to him, Sony has been working closely with AMD under a joint initiative called Project Amethyst. The idea is to co-develop graphics and machine learning tech specifically tuned for PlayStation hardware.

A big part of that effort revolves around AMD’s upcoming FSR Redstone suite. This includes not just upscaling, but also frame generation and something called ray reconstruction. Cerny pointed out that Sony’s PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) already shares core elements with the same tech stack, at least on the upscaling side. So this isn’t a completely separate path. It’s more like an extension of what’s already there.

The key takeaway is that improved AI-driven frame generation is coming, though not anytime soon. Cerny made it clear that nothing new on this front is expected for the rest of 2026. Still, the groundwork seems to be well underway, and both Sony and AMD appear fairly confident about where things are headed.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve already seen similar tech on PCs, and even on some smartphones. Sony India has launched the ILCE-7V, the fifth generation of its Alpha 7 full-frame mirrorless camera series. It features a newly developed partially stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with about 33 megapixels and the updated BIONZ XR2 image processor. The processor now includes the AI unit used in the latest Alpha models, which brings improvements to autofocus, tracking, color accuracy, still image quality, and video performance.

Along with the camera, Sony has also announced the FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II lens. It is a compact and lightweight standard zoom designed to support the ILCE-7V during high-speed continuous shooting.

The Alpha 7 V (ILCE-7V) uses the AI processing unit to deliver faster and more accurate autofocus. Sony states that Real-time Recognition AF is up to 30 percent better and can identify subjects faster. The camera uses 759 phase-detection points that cover up to 94 percent of the frame. It maintains focus even in low light down to EV -4.0. Real-time Tracking improves subject follow accuracy during both stills and video. High-resolution RAW processing is supported through the Imaging Edge Desktop application for more control in editing.

The partially stacked sensor allows a readout speed that is about 4.5 times faster. This helps reduce distortion and supports blackout free continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second. The system performs up to 60 AF and AE calculations per second. It can shoot 14-bit RAW images at the same speed with full AF and AE tracking. The Pre-Capture feature can record up to one second before the shutter press.

The ILCE-7V offers up to 16 stops of dynamic range to preserve detail across bright and dark areas. The new AI based Auto White Balance system identifies light sources through scene analysis and deep learning to provide more stable and natural colors.

For video creators, the camera offers 7K oversampled 4K 60p recording in full-frame mode and 4K 120p recording in APS-C or Super 35mm mode. There is full pixel readout without pixel binning for better detail. Dynamic Active Mode provides smoother handheld footage. Auto Framing uses AI to keep subjects properly framed. New noise reduction and an improved internal microphone help reduce background noise.

The ILCE-7V body will go on sale from 10 December 2025 at a price of Rs 2,55,990. The ILCE-7V M-Kit, which includes the 28–70mm OSS II lens, will arrive in February 2026 for Rs 2,70,490.

For global markets, the Alpha 7 V body is up for preorder on B&H and CVP at around USD 2,900 / EUR 2,650 / £2,330, with a new kit lens bundle also offered. Wider retail availability is expected by mid-December, and shipments have already started reaching retailers.

Sony has officially launched the LYT-901 mobile camera sensor, built for future flagship smartphones. Over the past few weeks, details about its sensor size, HDR approach, and zoom modes have been appearing in leak-based updates, when the hardware was known internally as Sony IMX09E. This marks Sony’s first 200-megapixel image sensor designed for phones, and it is expected to compete directly with Samsung’s 200-megapixel sensor platforms. Read on to know all the important details about this new camera technology.

Sony LYT-901 key specifications

The Sony LYT-901 centres on a very large 1/1.12″ imaging surface paired with 0.7μm pixels and a 200-megapixel output, the brand’s first sensor at this resolution designed for mobile use. An earlier code linked to this hardware was IMX09E before Sony aligned it with its simpler LYTIA series labeling. Instead of traditional Bayer, Sony expands the base pixel grid using a Quad-Quad Bayer mosaic and completes the translation to a 2×2 Bayer pattern through a dedicated hardware Remosaic path.

The company layers AI logic into the sensor’s internal rebayer circuit, reducing translation penalties and making dense pixel data easier for phone SoCs to handle. A 12-bit analogue-to-digital pipeline, backed by a Fine 12-bit ADC, adds extra latitude in gradation and helps keep fully resolved reads clean with lower noise.

For HDR, Sony merges two common approaches by using Dual Conversion Gain HDR as the backbone and combining it with a Hybrid Frame-HDR design that briefly samples one microsecond-class very-short extra frame. This keeps highlight clipping in check while avoiding obvious ghosting in fast scenes. Combined dynamic range exceeds 100dB, roughly 17 photographic stops. Zoom modes are a core strength: the sensor handles 2x hardware zoom for photos and 4x sensor-in-zoom for stills and video. At 4x zoom, phones can tap the stream much like a virtual telephoto view without an added optical lens step.

Unlike competing options, this is the only current sensor that covers 4x hardware zoom and 4K video at 30fps, with 120fps 4K capture available in 4x binning configurations. Pixel-binned profiles include 50-megapixel (2×2) and 12.5-megapixel (4×4), which help night capturing and high-zoom crops look more composed. It’s tuned for stage, show, and arena moments, where far-distance crops are the default. Concert photography is one of its most convincing use cases.

Oppo Find X9 Ultra, Vivo X300 Ultra expected to Sony LYT-901

The first debuts built on this sensor could land in the Ultra tier. The Find X9 Ultra from Oppo is expected to introduce the hardware in March 2026, based on rumor timelines. Sony’s sensor could also reach Vivo’s X300 Ultra, which may break cover in Q2 2026, according to current rumors.

To recall, the Sony Inzone H9 II wireless gaming headphones were first announced in the global market, and it is finally being released in India. One of its key highlights was the premium 30mm audio drivers that it borrows from Sony’s flagship WH-1000XM6 headphones. This model also features Sony 360 Reality Audio and virtual 7.1 surround sound for better immersion. There is support for ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) and a transparent mode as well.

While this connects wirelessly over Bluetooth and 2.4GHz via a USB-C dongle, it can also run with a wired connection thanks to an AUX connection. On a single full charge, the Sony Inzone H9 II headsets promise up to 30 hours of battery life with ANC disabled. A quick 5 minute charge offers 1 hour of audio playback, although a full charge takes around 3.5 hours. For communication while gaming, these feature a directional boom mic that supports AI powered noise filtering for clear in-game calls.

The latest hardware announcement from Sony is a new gaming monitor for PlayStation. This new model arrives with a 27-inch IPS LCD panel that has a QHD resolution (1440p) and up to 240Hz refresh rate. Although, the high refresh rate is only available for PC and Mac with VRR support. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro only get a 120Hz refresh rate when paired with the monitor.

This makes sense considering how the popular gaming consoles barely hit the triple digit frame rate in most titles. Finer details regarding the display itself, like support for HDR content, are still unclear. However, Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation branded gaming monitor features two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DP 1.4 port, two USB Type A ports, and a single USB Type-C port for PlayStation Link devices. This basically allows the monitor to link with other PS Link enabled products like the brand’s speakers, headphones, and TWS earbuds.

Other notable features include built-in stereo speakers, a 3.5mm audio output, VESA mount compatibility, and the DualSense Charging Hook. This is basically an integrated charging dock that is also retractable. Sony plans to sell this separately from the new gaming monitor, which is set to release in just the US and Japan (for now). A new leak suggests two Xperia devices are now in development. Qualcomm has already confirmed that Sony will be one of the launch partners for its latest flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

Earlier evidence showed Sony registering multiple model numbers believed to correspond to the upcoming flagship. Now, The Walkman Blog has uncovered a separate set of model IDs pointing to a second unreleased Xperia smartphone, shifting speculation away from a possible revival of the Xperia 5 series.

Sony’s mobile division has been in a state of uncertainty, yet it expanded its lineup earlier with the Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 10 VII. The flagship 1 VII runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite platform, while the 10 VII uses the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, a mid-range chipset. With the new model numbers PM-152xx understood to correspond to the Xperia 1 VIII, the six additional codes—PM-1530-BV, PM-1531-BV, PM-1532-BV, PM-1533-BV, PM-1534-BV, and PM-1555-BV—are believed to represent regional variants of a new mid-range entry.

According to tipster @fenibook, the LYT-910 will be Sony’s first 200MP mobile sensor, and it’s shaping up to be a beast on paper. The sensor reportedly measures 1/1.11 inches, which is significantly larger than the 1/1.3-inch ISOCELL HP2 found in Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra. It uses 0.7µm pixels, up from 0.6µm of Samsung’s HP2.

Under the hood, the sensor employs dual-level Remosaic technology — QBC for 50MP and QQBC for 200MP — which should improve both capture speed and processing efficiency. Leaks also point to 4K video recording at up to 120fps and 8K at 30fps, both with HDR support.

Beyond resolution, Sony seems focused on dynamic range and efficiency. The LYT-910 reportedly achieves a dynamic range exceeding 100dB, giving it stronger HDR performance in challenging lighting — think neon-lit streets or sun-soaked landscapes. The Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI are finally getting their Android 16 update. The rollout began in late October 2025 across Europe and the UK. The Xperia 1 VI is receiving build 69.2.A.2.30, which also includes the October 2025 security patch. You can check manually via Settings → System → About Phone → Software Update.

Google’s Pixels got Android 16 in June, and Sony’s own Xperia 1 VII picked it up in mid-September — leaving the VI series behind on Android 15 since launch. Still, the update brings plenty of welcome tweaks.

Notable improvements and new features

Sony’s changelog highlights a few meaningful upgrades beyond Android 16’s general refinements. The Settings menu has been reorganized with renamed items and new sections, including a dedicated “Modes” feature. This lets users create profiles such as Do Not Disturb, Bedtime, and Driving — each capable of muting notifications or adjusting screen behavior to minimize distractions. There’s even an option to build custom modes for different routines.

Display customization also gets smarter. Under Image quality settings, users can now pick a new “Recommended” mode that automatically optimizes visuals for content and usage. White balance controls have been simplified too.

Meanwhile, Side sense — Sony’s gesture shortcut feature — has moved to a new location under Settings → System → Gestures, and now includes helpful multitasking guides for split-screen and pop-up window use. The lock screen menu has also been refreshed with easier access from the Home screen and a renamed “Double-tap to check phone” option.

Still, for Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI owners, Android 16 delivers useful refinements, stronger stability, and a touch of modern polish — even if it took its time getting here.

The update is usually rolled out in batches. So, it may take a few days to reach your Sony phone, if it hasn’t already. To manually check for the latest update, you can head over to Settings > System > Advanced and tap on Software update to install the latest update.

Android 16 is a major upgrade with a download size of around 1-2GB. Ensure that your device has sufficient storage and that it is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network, as recommended when downloading bulky update packages. Also, make sure the battery is charged at least 30%.

Sony is about to wrap up its Android 16 rollout

Unfortunately, only four Sony smartphones are eligible for Android 16 upgrade: Xperia 1 VII, Xperia 1 VI, Xperia 10 VI, and Xperia 10 VII. Three of them have already started receiving the Android 16 update, and the last from the list, Xperia 10 VII, should also get it anytime soon.

The Xperia 10 VII will likely receive the update by early November, which would mark the conclusion of the Android 16 rollout for Sony. The company is on track to become one of the first non-Google brands to complete the Android 16 rollout.

All Sony devices here were released in 2024 or after, promising at least three generations of OS updates. Prior to that, the company used to provide only two of them. Thanks to the upgraded update policy, the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI will also receive Android 17, while the newer Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 10 VII will get OS updates until Android 19.

Sony India has announced the RX1R III, the third-generation model in its RX1R compact camera lineup. The camera was initially announced globally back in July 2025. It features a 61-megapixel 35mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS image sensor, the latest BIONZ XR image processor, and a ZEISS Sonnar T 35mm F2 lens.

The RX1R III combines a 61-megapixel back-illuminated sensor with the BIONZ XR engine to deliver high resolution, wide dynamic range, and low noise. The sensor has an anti-reflection coating and no optical low-pass filter, producing sharp and detailed images. The built-in ZEISS lens is tuned to the sensor at the micron level to ensure excellent sharpness and contrast across the frame.

The camera features an AI processing unit used in Sony’s top Alpha models. It detects and tracks eyes, faces, heads, and human bodies even when they are partially hidden. It covers around 78 percent of the frame with 693 phase-detection autofocus points. The Step Crop Shooting function lets users switch between focal lengths equivalent to 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm, and reselect them during RAW editing. The macro mode allows focusing as close as 20 cm, with a maximum magnification of 0.26x.

There are twelve built-in Creative Looks for photos and videos. FL2 gives muted, nostalgic tones, while FL3 produces bright and vivid images.

The RX1R III has a magnesium alloy body that is light and strong. It features a flat top, embedded dials, a comfortable grip, and a 2.36-million-dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder with 0.70x magnification. The NP-FW50 battery offers up to 300 still shots and can be charged via USB Type-C.

The Sony RX1R III is priced at ₹4,69,990 and will be available across Sony Centers, Alpha Flagship stores, authorized retailers, and major e-commerce sites in India from October 10, 2025.

Sony has announced a new special edition DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5. The Icon Blue Special Edition draws inspiration from the iconic blue lighting associated with the PlayStation brand since the PS4 era. It features layered shades of blue across the grips and lower shell, along with a glossy pattern of the PlayStation symbols on the touchpad.

The controller launches on October 20 in the United States and Canada, followed by a release on October 28 in Mexico and Chile. Sony has set the retail price at $84.99 USD, CA$109.99, MXN $1,899, and CLP $93,490. The Icon Blue model will be available exclusively through Walmart stores and Walmart’s official website in the respective regions.

Sony added Katakana characters on the back of the controller that spell “PlayStation” in Japanese. The company said this detail pays homage to the brand’s roots. According to Leo Cardoso from Sony’s Color, Material and Finish design team, the controller captures the feeling of anticipation and immersion that begins the moment the console powers on and the signature blue light appears.

The Icon Blue edition maintains all the features of the standard DualSense controller. It supports haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, motion controls, a built-in microphone, and a USB-C port. It also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack and works with both the PlayStation 5 and supported PC or mobile platforms.

Sony introduced the new controller as part of its ongoing celebration of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, which began on September 9. The company has not confirmed if the Icon Blue edition will launch in additional markets beyond North and Latin America.

The new color option adds to the growing lineup of DualSense variants, which includes Galactic Purple, Starlight Blue, Midnight Black, and several game-themed limited editions.

Sony has started rolling out the Android 16 update to its flagship Xperia 1 VII, just as the device returns to shelves following a short pause over software glitches. The update, while significant on paper, lands with a lighter touch than some expected.

The Xperia 1 VII originally shipped with Android 15. Now, firmware version 71.1.A.2.68 brings Android 16 to the device in a 1.1GB download. The rollout began in Europe and is available through the usual path: Settings > System > Software update. Sony has promised four major OS upgrades and six years of security support, meaning the phone should be supported up to Android 19.

The update delivers several useful features but avoids a dramatic redesign. Unlike Google’s Pixel phones, Sony has skipped the Material 3 Expressive look, leaving the interface close to what users already had on Android 15. The most noticeable change is a redesigned system settings app, while most other UI elements stay minimal and familiar.

On the feature side, Android 16 adds Google’s Advanced Protection, which users must enable manually. Once active, it blocks unsafe apps, flags scam calls, and warns against risky websites. Notifications are grouped more intelligently, support for hearing aids has improved, and users can now capture and share HDR screenshots.

Still, some features are missing. Live Updates, Google’s real-time push notifications for things like deliveries, aren’t present. The security patch also remains at August 2025, without a September update included yet.

Even without sweeping changes, Sony has beaten rivals like OnePlus to a stable Android 16 release. With the Snapdragon 8 Elite, 12GB RAM, and up to 512GB storage, the Xperia 1 VII remains a powerful option — and Sony’s quicker update cycle may help polish its reputation for software support.

While most brands, including OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, are busy with beta testing, Sony has already begun the stable rollout of Android 16. The update is currently available for the Sony Xperia 1 VII, which was released last year with Android 15.

The Android 16 update for the Sony Xperia 1 VII has the firmware version 71.1.A.2.68, and it’s about 1.13GB in size. This is the first of four major updates that Sony promises for the Xperia 1 VII. If you have got this smartphone, you can head over to Settings > System > Advanced and tap on Software update to install the latest update.

This isn’t as exciting as it sounds

While it’s surprising to see Sony rolling out stable Android 16 ahead of Xiaomi, OnePlus, Vivo, and many other Android brands, the update mostly feels just like Android 15. Sony has only made marginal changes to the user interface. It skips major changes introduced by Google with Android 16, such as Live Updates and the new “Material 3 Expressive” design.

The Android 16 update for the Sony Xperia 1 VII doesn’t have a changelog. According to a Reddit user, the Android security patch level has not been upgraded, still at August 2025. The smartphone would majorly feel the same even after upgrading to Android 16, except for the revamped Settings app.

This upgrade also brings a number of security improvements to Sony phones to keep them safer and more secure. Google’s new Advanced Protection ensures users remain protected from malware and various threats. This feature also blocks apps and websites that Google doesn’t think are safe. Additionally, Android 16 brings intelligent notifications grouping and improved support for hearing aids.

Sony has only three more smartphones left to upgrade to Android 16, which include the Sony Xperia 10 VII, Xperia 1 VI, and Xperia 10 VI. Hence, I believe it wouldn’t take long to complete the rollout.

Sony could soon shake up the high-end smartphone camera game. A new leak claims that several upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 flagships — including the “Ultra” models from Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi — are preparing to launch with a 200 MP Sony sensor, setting the stage for serious competition with Samsung’s Galaxy Ultra series.

According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the sensor in question is the Sony IMX09E. It’s said to measure 1/1.12-inch with 0.7 μm pixels. That makes it slightly smaller than the LYT-900 used in the Find X8 Ultra and Xiaomi 15 Ultra, but likely the largest 200 MP sensor ever fitted in a smartphone. Sony is reportedly betting on new Hybrid-Frame HDR technology, which could push dynamic range past 100 dB, promising better balance between highlights and shadows.

On paper, the IMX09E is designed to rival Samsung’s ISOCELL HP2 (1/1.3″), the 200 MP sensor currently found in the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Paired with the improved ISP in Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, leaks suggest the IMX09E could also support 4x lossless zoom — potentially giving Sony a much stronger foothold in the ultra-high-resolution race.

Oppo is rumored to be going all in, with the Find X9 Ultra tipped to feature not one but two 200 MP cameras in a quad setup. Xiaomi, meanwhile, could pair the IMX09E with a 1-inch main sensor on the Xiaomi 16 Ultra, creating one of the most ambitious camera stacks yet on a phone. Both devices are expected to arrive in early 2026.

If accurate, the IMX09E could mark Sony’s biggest push yet into the premium smartphone market. And with Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi all looking to challenge Samsung directly, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting years for smartphone photography in a long time.
